Controversial Character Tournament Round 1: Randy Random from Rimworld

so ive been playing a pretty rough game on randy for days now and oh my GOD has the unique nature of this game’s storytelling just hit me HARD

ok so. randy random, cranked up to losing is fun, random landing site and three random colonists i didnt even look at, just confirmed. and my game was actually going rly good! good landing spot, good distribution of team skills. i had a colony of about 7, with 2 kids, a good relationship with the empire, and we were just into our first winter with a freezer packed full of food and heating everywhere

and then randy throws a 5-person raid at me with MACHINE GUNS. and just like that, 3 colonists are kidnapped. the 2 kids get through it but die of blood loss one after the other. only 2 colonists left, and they both have mental breaks and im just kinda left there to watch and wait. at this point we’re into winter, but i prepared well before the attack so im still a little optimistic.

and then one of them gets hunted down by a cougar, and im only left with one colonist. a colonist i only have because of completing an emprie quest, and who i had hide inside during the raid because he’s incapable of violence, so he’s here unharmed by pure luck. 

and there was a moment. bodies of the raiders we managed to get are still outside, the two kids are dead in their beds, the last colonist is killed outside. and then squirt, yes that's his name, is left all alone. a huge base that once housed 7 people, fully functional with a stable source of electricity, a freezer full of food he could never eat himself.

and he starts burying the bodies. and cleaning. and cooking more food. and im trying to imagine the mental state he’s in right now and it’s FUCKING WITH ME

this game is rough, man

I know it's pry stupid to do crossovers with my own fan content but I've been reading up on wh40k stuff again and the idea of a cross-over with tech priests getting stranded and in my rimworld-verse and struggling to repair their ship and the archotech trio show up just results in the funniest fucking scenarios even if the archotechs keep all hush hush about what they are and just offer to help normally.

The tech priests are wafting incense around chanting and Randy's just like "are we going to fix it or have ritual sex in front of it?" and the tech priests are all "do you think that would help?" Luna would pass out from laughing

Roughy survived the inevitable mental break, and the catharsis helps get everything back on track. Still no electricity, but we have a few traps up and a table. Alas, he ran out of food. He can either fight a lynx, or a pair of wolves, so he fights the lynx and wins. Winter is nearly over.

So of course he gets an infection. It doesn’t take long to see he won’t survive this final trial. I decide it was a good run. A shame I couldn’t get a good grip on his mood, but this one just wouldn’t get off the ground and it was time to try again. I waited patiently for Roughy to die.

And then something happens that completely surprises me - A man in black! Two in one game! And at the right settlement this time. What’s more, it’s Roughy’s son, carrying modern medicine.

Unfortunately it’s too late to get a good tend. Zee fights off a manhunting wolf and gets things in order. I narrowly stop him from butchering his dad and bury him instead.

Zee is pretty useless. He has an annoying voice and is incapable of social. He can’t build a generator and gives himself food poisoning on his first try. I watch as he inevitably slips into his own sad wander, just as his father did just a few days ago.

Then, Randy sends our first raid.

I watch helplessly as the raider and a shotgun break down the walls and… Gets killed in self defence??! Zee lived!

Spring is sprung and there are oodles of racoons to eat. I place a growing zone.

Later on in the shower I realise that Zee could have amputated Roughy’s infected leg to save his life. Welp. That’s commitment mode for you.
