Important question for the RotE fandom. I will not provide reasoning for any of these characters but trust me I did actually think about this.

Just note that they don’t have to fulfill the role to Fitz; many of them do for another character.

(Also, this is supposed to be lighthearted so don’t get offended on Robin Hobbs behalf; I’m not actually accusing her of using shallow character tropes)

"Let go of me!" Amber's voice rang with authority. From some deep well of courage, she had drawn the will to fight back on her own behalf. Her shout cut through the crowd's noise. "Release me, or I will touch you!" She made good her threat, surging toward Rapskal instead of trying to pull her hand free. The sudden reverse shocked him and her silvered fingers came perilously close to his face. The general gave a shout of alarm and sprang back from her as he let go of her wrist. But she was not finished. "Back, all of you!" she commanded. "Give us room and let me see to the prince or, by Sa, I will touch you!" Hers was the command of an angered queen, pitched to carry her threat. Her silvered forefinger pointed as she swung it in a slow arc around her, and people were suddenly stumbling over one another in their haste to be out of her reach.

The mother of the girl with dragon feet spoke. "I'd do as she says!" she warned. "If that is truly dragon-Silver on her fingers, one touch of it will mean slow death. It will seep down to your bones, right through your flesh. It will travel your bones, up your spine to your skull. Eventually, you will be grateful to die from it." As others were falling back from us, she began pushing her way through the crowd toward us. She was not a large person but the other dragon-keepers were giving way to her. She stopped a safe distance from us. Her dragon had patterned her in blue and black and silver. The wings that weighted her shoulders were folded snug to her back. The claws on her toes tapped the floor as she walked. Of all the Elderlings present, she was most heavily modified by her dragon's touch. Her warning and Amber's threat cleared a small space around us.

Amber retreated to my side, gasping as she sought to calm her breath. Spark stood on her other side and Perseverance took up a position in front of her. Amber's voice was low and calm as she said, "Spark, retrieve my glove if you would."

"Of course, my lady." The requested item had fallen to the floor. Spark stooped and cautiously picked it up in two fingers. "I will touch your wrist," she warned Amber, and tapped the back of her hand to guide her to her glove. Amber was still breathing unsteadily as she gloved her hand, but weak as I was, I was horribly glad to see that she had regained some of the Fool's strength and presence of mind. She linked her unsilvered hand through my arm and I was reassured by her touch. It seemed to draw off some of the Skill-current still coursing through me. I felt both connected to her and less battered by the Skill.

Now I'm wondering if Rapskal left some of himself in the stone when he was living Tellator's life. And that forged him a little, like it did Fitz and made space for Tellator to step in. Maybe it's not at all like that, but maybe it is and if he got his memories back, like Fitz did via the second kiss, he could become Rapskal again.

Sorry for answering late!

I don't really like Rapskal the way most RotE people seem to. I think he buys into some of the same destructive cultural concepts regarding women and relationships that the other boys do. To a certain extent he's more naive, but he doesn't really listen to "no" better than the others as far as I'm concerned. Still, I feel bad for the ways things go for him.

How can someone be so cool and competent and still be such a pathetic wet cat? I love her. Truly she has never done anything wrong. Everyone applaud for her.

Also she's irrefutably besties with Tanaka post-canon. 10 years of friendship and Tanaka will shyly ask over beers, "Hey, do you think we're friends?."

I think the main problem of the rainwild chronicals stems from the fact tha5 the there isnt enough plot time for the story to properly delve into the psyche of the characters and let them develop, losing much of the appeal most rote books have. Those are annoying teenagers that don't go through all the trauma other rote characters do to change to not-annoying teenagers (like in liveships) the characters do , but neither doe sthe story take place over a long enough period of time for them to develop into adults (like fitz in the farseer trilogy)

When you get to the f&f trilogy you see how much they truely developed and found their place and became adults (encluding some changes that seem drastic, because it has been so long in world since they were who they were in their own series). Its just kind of dissapointing how so many characters we just didnt get to see the development of, because of the lack of time for it in the rain wild chronicles themselves.

"Even if my dragon cannot muster, at present, the will to avenge her kind on these 'Servants', I would wish to kill them all myself. For her." He met my gaze squarely. "I will not apologize for how I first behaved when you came to my city. My caution was warranted, and I am still dubious about much of your tale. No one saw you descend from the hills into Kelsingra. Your party arrived with more baggage than I believe you could comfortably carry. None of you had the weathered look common to folk who have made a long journey through the wilderness. I could not help but regard you with great caution. I had believed that only the Elderlings of old could use the standing stones as portals."

He stopped speaking. I met his gaze and said nothing. A spark of anger glittered in his metallic eyes.

Realm of the Elderlings Ask Meme Thing

tagged by @tragediegh! \o/ Favorite RotE book: I'm also gonna have to say Fool's Fate though Ass Quest is a close second Why: Listen I will never forget the shrimp emotions I experienced in that tent or during the resurrection, and the reveal/healing of Fitz's forging re-contextualizing all his previous choices. This book pulls no punches. I don't think I would have survived it if I had read it back in 2003 with no guarantee of Beloved surviving. And the ending was devastating but honestly, upon reflection I accept it--not as a "happy" ending but as Fitz maladaptively retreating to his past and being unable to follow through on the character growth that was happening for him up to that point. It is NOT a happy ending for Molly. Top three favorite characters: Amber, Lord Golden, and the Fool. Haha ok no, favorite supporting characters: Patience, Paragon, and Chade, with honorable mention to Jek and Rapskal Top Three Least Favorite Characters: uhhh Tats "Friendzone" Last Name, and Lant--he had me at "poor terrorized kid," lost me at "mean to Bee," started winning me back a little, then lost me again at "dating the 14 year old (implicitly as part of her casting off her gender nonconformity)." Everyone else I was pretty much cool with Favorite Ship (of the floating kind): I already said Paragon so it's gonna have to be Ophelia, she was such a bawdy aunt and she got to slap some bad guys (I don't even remember who it was now but the slapping was important) Top Three Favorite Ships (of the people kind): I'm not really into shipping as like a recreational activity, I feel like Robin Hobb already put in all the work for me on the one I care about. That said: PATIENCE AND LACEY. ...Actually I also really love that one text post about how Chade and Jek definitely hooked up and were total bros about it. I'll try to find it after I post this Would you rather be Witted or Skilled? Witted 100% If you were Witted, what animal would you bond with? A cormorant, and I would regress into full Gollum mode just eating raw fish and wallowing in the sea as god intended Would you rather live in the Outislands, the Mountain Kingdom, the Six Duchies, Bingtown, The Rain Wilds, Kelsingra, Jamaillia, The Pirate Isles, or the Fool's Homeland?
