One fun thing about the first gen Lyctors is that John quite literally took away their childhoods. Not that they had great childhoods they'd cherish the memory of, I'd bet against that, but god, they have so little context to understand themselves. They came into life, Pygmalion style, adults and in love but not knowing why. If the younger lyctors ever tried to swap parental horror stories, they couldn't even take a stab. They toss around "brother" and "sister" and "son" with each other, but a very real way, John is the only father they've ever known.

Fool's Errand / Golden Fool spoilers.

I am reading through Golden Fool right now and I cannot reconcile with the emphasis on Kettricken's grief being more powerful and more genuine than The Fool's. I feel like this is just negligent and out of character writing. I try not to criticize Hobb too much, but this feels incredibly dismissive and forgetful of her own characters? I really, really, really want other opinions because I cannot find anyone else talking about this.

Fool, "I do not mourn Nighteyes [as you do], I grieve for your grief"

But also, "We are pack" "We are Whole" "The Fool completed us", "Little brother". Nighteyes who accepts Fool unconditionally, welcomes him into his and Fitz's life when rejecting all others, turns back into a puppy upon even feeling him in the distance.

Fool who regularly just almost heard Nighteyes - and once spoke without borders, in soul. Fool who reunites with him and begins crying. Fool who openly accepted sacrificing his life with Nighteyes, who nearly died with him, who slept with Nighteyes in his arms.

But somehow we end up with dialogue implying Fool does not actually mourn Nighteyes at all, and is only grieving because Fitz is grieving, who feels significantly less than Kettricken (who last saw Nighteyes once 15 years ago), "Kettricken mourns Nighteyes as I do, for himself". As if Fool doesn't?? This genuinely just feels like Hobb forgetting what she has established of her own character/s.

Fool would grieve Nighteyes as if he was his own, and I reject anything less than that.

Looks like Shallan got her hands on some (digital) gouache. 🤭😶‍🌫️ Colouring my Kaladin sketch from a few weeks ago (the page from Shallan's sketchbook that she didn't want Adolin to see), to try out some more opaque-medium painting. talk me a sansa/sandor thing

I WILL TALK TO YOU A THING.

My favorite thing about Sansa/Sandor is how it actually makes Sansa the most powerful knight in Westeros. SO CHECK THIS OUT:

Sansa defeats the Hound. She destroys him. The most feared warrior in Westeros, she reduces to a sniveling drunken mess sobbing on the side of a river, and she does it with nothing but kindness, intelligence, and grace. It’s the ultimate display of her power. The ultimate display of everything that makes Sansa, Sansa. She destroys the Hound, who is established in the first book as the ultimate warrior, and through that destruction, through that defeat Sandor can finally come to life.

The ship for me isn’t about Sansa being saved, it’s about Sansa being the knight that saves Sandor. She defeats the monster inside him, and allows him to be the man he always was afraid to fully accept. She saves him. She’s his knight in shining armor. And I love that so much.
