Fiona hadn’t slept more than a couple hours; after getting home at three in the morning, she’d spent until sunrise crying in bed, clutching her raggedy old gray wolf stuffed animal and letting her specifically-designed sad Submergence playlist run on repeat until she’d finally fallen into a shallow, fitful sleep around seven am. When she’d woken up three hours later she’d still had a headache and popped three maximum strength Ibuprofen before trying fruitlessly to sleep more, and finally at noon she’d gotten up and showered and tried to make herself feel better by determining to go out and walk around town during the festivities.

Even better, she'd thought as she was getting dressed, she ought to make Aiden go with her. And so she had.

Usually being around him would have instantly put her in a better mood, but even after meeting up with him near one of the booths in town square, she still can't seem to find her usual good humor. Two separate fights last night had emotionally drained her in a way that, generally, Fiona was too good at avoiding her scarier emotions to fall victim to.

"I'm not even hungry," she says mournfully, staring down at a melting snow cone she'd bought. "Last night was the worst night of my life, I'm serious. I've been sick to my stomach for like, almost twelve hours now." Releasing a heavy, burdened sigh, she asks, "Did you have fun at least?"

Only because everything is maximum interesting right now and she's feeling like she could pretty much do anything in the world, Lily accepts a dare from the friends she's with to go up and talk to the doofus in the stupid jersey and the bucket hat at the bar.

There was something specific she'd been meant to say, a deliberately cringey line about changing the number on the back of his shirt to '1', but she's already forgotten the wording by the time she sidles up to him, and she surely would have said something completely mortifyingly incoherent (and maybe not even cared right now) had she not at the last moment recognized him.

"Oh my god," she says, straightening up and grinning. "Hey, no way! It's you! What's with the weird ass jersey?"

thinking about that article where Aidan talks about Five being lost this season, about how he doesn't know what his place is in the universe. thinking about how it might be because there's no longer any apocalypse to stop, no world to save, and comparing it to similar circumstances in season 3. thinking about the fact Five's response to having fulfilled his purpose in that situation is not to despair but to celebrate. you could argue that maybe it's because the reality of it hasn't set in, that he's essentially in the honeymoon phase of no longer having a place in the world, but I'd argue there's another consideration - his family. Five in S3 is content, happy even, despite no longer having a purpose because at least he still knows his place. and that's amongst the people he's dedicated decades of his life to saving. thinking about how, by the end of the season, Five was ready to finally put an end to it all - no more stopping the apocalypse. because at least he'd get to go out surrounded by the people he loved. but S4 sees them all split up. and now Five's without a purpose and without his family. and there's no end of the world to save them from; they won, timeline fixed, universe restored. his family is finally safe. and Five is still alone.

Paint and makeup smeared and some of the glow-in-the-dark heart stickers she'd so carefully placed around her eyes earlier that evening gone, Fiona's still hurting monumentally from the shouting match she'd had with Mack back at the club but trying to let Cricket make her feel better by taking selfies in the back of their shared Uber.

And it does help a little, at least until a text message preview pops up.

The name reads 'Mack (🛑 Do Not Reply)' and the message is a simple 'U up?'

In the time it takes Cricket to whip her phone away, Fiona is stunned into silence. A few seconds later, there's dread. And then devastation. And then anger.

Feeling suddenly like she might cry again, she rounds on Cricket, "What the hell was that? Was that a fucking 'you up' text from Mack?"

"Stand right...here," Lily instructs, tugging Edie in front of a wall that's been absolutely splattered with neon paint. Having only just recently arrived, they themselves are still freshly painted with Lily's own supply she'd brought with her when she moved. Just in case.

Pulling out her phone, she snaps a few pictures of Edie and then goes to trade places. "Are all my hair ties still in place? I'm bugging about them getting messed up," she laughs.
