Studio Neelkamal is a testament to the 1970s & 80s in India of hands-on studio photography when artistry and physical materials were combined in the studio to shape up a portrait. Moreover, a new world was entirely created in one small rectangular space according to the subject's ambition and wants in order to achieve the spatial mood unachievable due to restrictions at the time. Not surprisingly, this practice still prevails in small towns where the current digital and fashion culture has not overpowered the masses yet. The purpose of this story is to evoke that lost world where the studio portrait was an important memento and it captured not just the 'real' subject but a persona made over to meet the camera's eye. These studio spaces, are now used as storage rooms and also vanishing in most of the towns and cities across India. Studio Neelkamal aims to create a modern-day version of that era with all newly found knowledge of fashion and characteristics in the context of fascinating visual history. To add on to our depiction, it also plays with the stereotypes in regards to femininity, masculinity, and androgyny. That era was associated with a strict demarcation of gender roles into the binaries as opposed to the modern times which has a more fluid approach. Androgyny was a concept unheard of.
