Majid Salek Mohammadi (?-1985)

Majid Salek Mohammadi was an Iranian serial killer, responsible for the deaths of 24 people between 1981 and 1985. Nothing is known about his life prior to committing the murders. As for his motive, an informant said: “Majid was imprisoned for 2 years for a bad check, and after being released from prison, he became aware of a relationship between his wife and his cousin. It was never clear why these two were spared, but he began to murder any woman whom he considered not loyal to her husband.” 

The first, and most brutal, murder was that of Akhtar, 36, and her two 11-year-old children, Mohammad and Farahnaz, in 1981. 3 years later, the body of a strangled woman was discovered at Tehran’s Freedom Ghetto Checkpoint. Less than a month later, the Sharif Abad Gendarmerie Checkpoint in Varamin found the body of a 28-year-old woman. Within weeks, the body of a 35-year-old factory worker, Anise, was found on a roadside. Another was found the same week. The following month, the woman of a body named Eshrat was found. On October 2, 1984, gendarmes found the body of 55-year-old Fatima, who had been choked to death. The same month, gendarmes discovered the body of a 16-year-old who had also been choked. On December 5, an investigation was opened into the murder of 35-year-old Khayyar Moghaddam, who was strangled with a rope. The following week the bodies of a child and a 25-year-old woman named Khadijeh were discovered together. Shortly afterwards, the body of a mother named Mansoureh was found, suffocated with a rope. 

The body of 25-year-old Raziyeh was found in December, followed by a 40-year-old woman named Parvin, who had been strangled. On Christmas Day, 1984, the body of a woman who had been choked was found near Candjaj. Investigators claimed the woman was a store worker named Fatima. 3 days later, the body of 32-year-old teacher Mahboubeh was discovered. Just 2 days later the corpse of a 25-year-old woman was found, choked to death. The murders took a break until February 8, 1985, when gendarmes found the body of a 29-year-old hospital worker, choked in a gutter. The same week, the body of a 45-year-old woman was found, strangled with a rope, in Bostanabad. The following day, Tehran gendarmes found the body of a woman who had been suffocated to death. 

The same week, 41-year-old Masoumeh was found, strangled with a rope. This crime was to be Mohammadi’s undoing. Masoumeh’s sister told investigators that she saw her sister being followed by a slim man driving a green Chevrolet Vantbar. The driver, in his early 30s, told Masoumeh that he was her driver and to get in, even showing an official ID card. In less than a week, officers successfully stopped and identified the green Chevrolet. The driver was middle-aged and of Azeri descent. While searching the car, officers found women’s clothes and a metre-long rope inside the car’s engine. 

Much like his early life, little is know about Mohammadi’s post-arrest period. Author Ahmed Mohagheghi wrote in his book: “At 21:30 on May 8, 1985, when I went into the courtroom, I was messaged to contact the prosecutor immediately. When I came to the prosecutor’s office, the guard said that it was as if someone in prison had committed suicide. I received a phone call from the Qasr Prison. The Major, who headed the case, sounded very annoyed. Majid had killed himself in his cell. And with his death, his case was closed forever.”
