What is Mobile App Testing?
Mobile app testing, as the name suggests, is the procedure of evaluating an Android or iOS mobile app for usability and functioning before its general launch. Mobile app testing enables users to confirm whether an app satisfies the UX, Technical criteria, and Expected business.
Testing is not just limited to having a single device and operating system. In today's world of mobile devices, apps can be tested numerous times on various setups to determine if they will pass standards. This research helps assure flawless performance across a variety of device setups.
Mobile app testing includes the following:
Evaluating the performance of programs on various OS versions (for example Android 11.0, 12.0, etc.)
Testing how an application would look in landscape and portrait modes
Verifying an app's performance and compatibility when used with a particular configuration
Checking the app's compatibility with mobile sensors like the GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope.
Checking the functionality of the app's GUI (Menus, dropdowns, navigation buttons, etc.)

Why is testing mobile apps important?
If your mobile app remains underwhelming and fails to match competing apps on user flow or performance, users will probably not download it. It's important to consider the needs of non-technical users while developing a mobile app, as they are the ones who use it on their phones or tablets daily and provide feedback to help shape its future features. However, if your mobile app is buggy and fails to meet the needs of its user base, it won't be long before they uninstall it and choose another program that would better suit their needs. Additionally, this causes the loss of potential end-users and income.
Differences between Mobile and Web Testing
When testing mobile applications, there are additional considerations to make, even if you are only evaluating a feature of the web application. With different standard resolutions, form factors, and device-specific functionality, mobile consumers will interact with your app across a variety of operating systems, devices, and resolutions.
Testing must take into account the many circumstances that mobile users experience in contrast to desktop/laptop web users, in addition to the individual devices themselves. Due to the always-changing surroundings, this includes signal strength, battery life, and even contrast and brightness.
Types of Mobile Apps
Native Apps: The most common way to obtain and install native software is through an app store, such as Apple's App /Google's Play Store. To construct a cross-platform app that works across many mobile devices, frameworks like ReactNative, Flutter, or NativeScript can be used. Both iOS and Android's pure native apps made with Objective-C and Swift are included in this.
Responsive Web Apps:  Through responsive web apps, mobile browsers can access mobile web apps. These app kinds are either PWAs, which include more features for mobile devices, or a mobile-friendly version of a website.
Hybrid apps: Hybrid apps are features of native apps that allow them to exist in an app store and be installed just like normal ones. They typically include some native capabilities, such as being able to take advantage of certain platforms and devices.

Manual Testing vs Automated Testing for Mobile
Testing applications is a complex task. Manual testing is done by human testers and involves closely examining the application to determine if it complies with its requirements and performs as expected. Automated testing, which replicates some manual testing tasks, but is intended to reduce time and effort, automates some of these tasks.
Although manual testing might be very time-consuming, it can also benefit from human intuition to find unforeseen flaws. However, automated testing can overlook less obvious examples that manual testing would capture. Automated testing saves a significant amount of time and is particularly useful for repeating tests.
The needs of your application will determine whether you do testing using one method or a hybrid approach.
Top Open Source Tools for Mobile Test Automation
For mobile app testing, there are many well-known open-source tools and frameworks available. These are: XCUITest, Espresso, Appium, and Calabash
Mobile Test Automation Using Appium
The widely used mobile automation testing tool Appium is used to evaluate mobile browsers and mobile software. It verifies how well mobile browsers and applications work across a range of mobile devices in terms of compatibility, usability, and response time.
This software has only been used to test mobile apps, with an emphasis on iOS, Firefox OS, and Android programs. The Appium automation testing framework supports many programming languages. These include Perl, Python, PHP, and Java.
Appium allows for the execution of automation tests on emulators, simulators, and mobile devices.
Conclusion
As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, mobile testing initially appears to be very simple, but as you continue learning, you will discover that it is difficult to assure that whatever is built will function properly on thousands of devices around the world.
