Disclaimer: I have never read MTMTE but have seen many bits and parts of scattered comic panel so I'm spoiled enough with what happened (maybe aware of 2 or 3 major events)

Hot take but god the ENTIRETY of idw Transformers is so badly written.

Mtmte/LL particularly is super bad at show don't tell but the main series in particular is super frustrating but at least it was coherent to some extent.

Like. If mtmte was published as a monster of the week format with no over arching theme it would have been better

Realizing that part of the reason comic books have such a strong allure to me is because they have such a wide audience. Unlike a lot of tv programs their writers are aware they're both writing for a younger newer fanbase and a niche adult audience with much higher standards for maturity and depth. Plus they're not as hyped as the film industry and thus the stakes are much lower. And comics, like manga, have more room to establish a solely adult audience for certain franchises or even specific series of that franchise . So superheros and robots have unusual amounts of meta and mature content but also they can't say fuck because Kids Like Robots And Superheros (despite majority of purchasers being at least young adults in this day and age)

Attempt 1.

Christmas mistake.

It had taken a lot to convince Magnus for Swerve to be allowed to have an official Christmas party.

Thankfully Moonie managed to give a compelling argument for the party.

Magnus sitting at his desk: “I have read your email and seen your charts. But I still need one more reason why I should allow this festivity to continue. It is not even a Cybertronian holiday, it is an Earth holiday. More than half of the crew have not even been to Earth.” Moonstreaker: “It will increase crew morale and increase team building skills.” Magnus hums unconvinced. Moonstreaker: “And bonus, it will keep Rodimus in one place and contained.” Magnus stops to think about the idea. Moonstreaker: “And I will finish his late work before the party.” Magnus: “Normally I would be against another crew member doing the captains work… but I do need those files… Very well, the festivities are approved—” BANG! Magnus and Moonstreaker jump from the noise outside the office and open the door to see what happened. Whirl is scrambling from the floor and running down the hall. Whirl: “MOONIE DID IT! You owe me 15 shanix Cyclonus!”

The party did in fact boost the crew’s morale.

Well, the engex did help too.

Speaking of engex, Swerve was passing drinks and cubes out faster than usual.

Moonstreaker decided to help the bartender pass out the drinks.

It lessened the load and gave an excuse for them to talk more.

Everything was going great at the party.

Rodimus and Drift were singing ‘All I want for Christmas is you’.

Ratchet was defiantly not blushing at the bar when Drift would wink at him from time to time.

Tailgate was signing him and Cyclonus for the next round.

Several Earth Christmas shows were playing on the monitors.

Moonie swore that she saw Brainstorm and Roller shed a tear watching the Rudolph movie.

The perfect time for Whirl to execute his plan.

This was for the sake of his Amica!

Whirl sits next to Moonstreaker and pulls a plant over her and Swerve’s helm. Swerve squeaks a bit seeing the plant. Swerve: “Whirl… where did you get that?” Whirl: “A little betting online. Now, I’m no expert on Earth culture, but I’m pretty sure when mistletoe—” Moonstreaker: “That’s not mistletoe.” Whirl: “…what?” Moonstreaker taking one of the leaf’s of the plant: “This is Holly Whirl. It’s a common mistake between this and mistletoe. I can actually pull up a photo if you give me a few minutes, left my data pad in my room. Wait here!” Moonstreaker runs out of the bar. Swerve has a slight smile on his face and goes back to making drinks. Whirl stomps on the plant and goes back to his table.

Attempt 2.

Crate moving.

Swerve had just received his newest shipment of new cube and drink glasses to replace broken ones.

Moonstreaker was helping him and Ten.

She was on break and saw that he needed help, nothing else.

Ten had his servos with the biggest boxes while Moonie and Swerve had their servos filled with the boxes.

And Whirl was lurking behind the corner…

Whirl sticks his pede out and trips Moonstreaker. Moonstreaker yelps as the boxes go flying through the air. Swerve tries to stop her from falling but ends up getting crushed by her frame. Swerve landed flat on his back. Moonstreaker had both her servos on either side of his helm and faceplate inches away from his. Swerve whispering: “Moonie?” Moonstreaker attentively looking into his visor: “You, okay?” Swerve nods slowly. Whirl was almost shaking with excitement! Their faces slowly inching closer… Ten: “Ten!” Ten gently pulled Moonstreaker off of Swerve. He softly brushes the dust off her before helping Swerve up. Moonstreaker patting Ten’s shoulder: “Thank you Ten.” Ten smiles: “Ten! Ten!” Whirl is clenching his claws tightly and resisting the urge to punch the wall again. He was on thin ice from the last time he did that, and Moonie was around.

Attempt 3.

Lone songs.

It was near closing time at the bar.

The only ones around were familiar faces and regulars.

And as usual, Moonstreaker was at the bar with Swerve, listening to his day with a smile on her face.

The bot only got up to change the music every so often.

Its not like the others minded anyways.

Whirl sighing with his helm on the table. Tailgate patting his helm: “It’ll be okay Whirl.” Whirl sighs again. Rewind: “The two have to come to some kind of conclusion sooner or later. They aren’t dumb.” Chromedome: “Oblivious is the correct word.” Rewind elbows his Conjunx a bit before turning to Whirl. Cyclonus: “I still do not understand why you are so invested in getting Moonstreaker and Swerve together.” Whirl: “It’s because—” Rewind: “Shh! Guys look!” The 5 mechs look over at the bar and see Moonstreaker getting a bit closer to Swerve. The bartender even looked like he was moving in too. Whirl: “Rewind… please tell me you’re…” Rewind: “Always recording.” The two bots at the counter seemed to be getting closer and closer… WHAM! Rodimus burst through the bar doors. Rodimus: “Moonie!” Moonstreaker and Swerve jumped back leaving a large gap in between them. Moonstreaker quickly stood up and went over to her brother. Moonstreaker: “Rodimus, what happened?” Rodimus takes her servo and starts marching out the door. Rodimus: “You forgot the Uno match! I had everything ready for me to beat your sorry behind ready!” Moonstreaker: “You mean I’m going to kick your metal behind when I win.” Rodimus: “Yeah right!” The siblings’ bickering faded out as they left the bar. Chromedome: “Did—What—How…” Cyclonus: “That was… unexpected…” Tailgate: “Aww. Look at Swerve.” Swerve had a somber look on his face as he finished cleaning the rest of his cubes. Rewind looks over at Whirl, whose yellow optic had shrunk to the size of a pin. Rewind: “Umm… Whirl?” Whirl stands up and begins to walk out of the bar. Cyclonus getting up: “Whirl, where are you going?” Whirl: “To either drink some more engex in my room or commit arson, I’ll figure it out when on the way.”

IDW collection reading update! :D 📖 (Fixed!)

Phase 2 volume 4 done! This volume included: Monstrosity, RID issues 12-18 and MTMTE issues 14-16!

I ended up reading all the way to Phase 2 volume 6 before finishing this update so my notes are a bit scattered! Anyway! As usual my thoughts are below :3 ⤵️

Monstrosity:

This story is set in the past, when Optimus has assumed leadership on Cybertron after the senate and pervious primes were killed.

This story is, I dunno... For some reason I can't really get into these?? It feels... edgy?? Idk, I feel like that's not the best way to describe it. But there's something about the vibe with these ones in the past (like Autocracy and this one).

Of course everyone is becoming the characters we know since this is in the past. So there is going to be a lot of fumbling and growing from them and things that seem out of character. But given their situation at the time, i can't be super harsh on odd decisions.

They have to deal with the senate and their corruption, as well as that from the previous primes, the Decepticons uprising and wanting to take over, Cybertron running out of resources aaaaand I feel like something else I can't remember rn 🤔 but a lot is going on!! Haha.

There is a scene that references the OG animated movie where they toss Megatron out of Astrotrain and he goes "I still function...!" Which was a pretty cool homage tho.

But this kinda felt like a whole way to just show how badass Megs is meanwhile Optimus is going through it on Cybertron 😂 It was entertaining and interesting at parts, but some things I was 'eh' about

RID: 12-16:

Before i go on, I'm sorry, but... this Megs panel is giving me the same energy as that little alien guy that was in the news months ago 🤣 Now actually⤵️

Megatron returns!! This story was very entertaining!! I feel like I can usually guess where something is going, but I was surprised by a lot of the twists here! There was so many!

The character deaths had me shook! 😭 Wheeljack ahhhh!!! Metalhawk!! Also everything with Prowl and the Constructions! O_O;

I'm sorry Prowl 😔 I was pretty surprised when they started killing off the Decepticons at first, but then went: "Well, I guess he's being super ruthless now" I couldn't see you were brainwashed!! 😭🗿To my defense, him teaming up with Arcee and given Arcee's record, it kinda seemed like the natural progression of things lol 💀

Two things I kinda have mixed feelings about tho are:

1. Arcee just casually being part of the Decepticon gang and no one questioning her being there?? She then easily kills the guy controlling Devastator and that was like... Megatron's big plan. Why didn't she do it sooner? I imagine it was to draw out Meg's, but still it seemed weird.

2. Starscream killing Metalhawk after Metalhawk came to save Starscream. It's in his character and everything, and I'm happy that he did it bc it shows who he is. But OOF I thought he was leaning a different way for a bit and that I had Starscream wrong, But no, he's greedy boy. (I was starting to like Metalhawk T_T)

Anyway! Good guy Swindle!! 🥹

MTMTE 14-16:

💀💀💀💀💀 BIG SAD. But!!! It was a super interesting story!! I really enjoyed learning about Overlord and Chromedome.

Chromedome becoming Trepan's apprentice in the past was crazy!! :O And the whole scene with him and Prowl in Prowl's office. When Prowl asks/threatens Chromedome to go into Overlord's mind 😙👌 *chef's kiss* GET 'EM CHROMEDOME!! 💪👊🔪

The whole thing about how the Phase Sixers are made was very interesting too!! This frame ⤵️ Meg's saying this made me lmao 😂 I can now see the thing between him and Overlord better now.

As for Overlord getting out and obliterating some of the crew... ughhhhh 😭😭😭 Pipes man!! Ratchet protecting the medibay was awesome. Best doctor 🚑😌

I was shocked during the fight with Overlord that Magnus got so injured!! I've read ahead already, but I was sweating it, I thought he was gonna die too 😭😭 Overlord goes right for your spark man 💀

Luckily they got Overlord back to his containment cell, but- 😭😭😭😭 LITTLE MAN 😭😭😭 Why'd he have to hop in there to get the sword??? OTL

Then Chromedome blowing it up once the cell disengaged from the ship 😭 It was a perfectly painful sequence! 👏

When I saw the scene with Whirl and the cannon/ blaster shooting asteroids, I knew it would come around 😔

Also!! Learning that Chromedome has had other deep connections with bots (idk if Brainstorm meant Conjunx' specifically) and given them his innermost energon before and that's why he's dry!! Excuse me as I sob 🤧🤧🤧🤧😭😭😭😭 and then he makes himself forget!!! UGHH OTL My heart man!

The tape that Rewind made too!! 😭🤧

Drift taking one for the team too by getting banished 😔 he's a real one. Also pls come back.

RID 17-18:

We got more Shockwave lore here and I'm a big Shockwave enjoyer so I was very happy!! More heartache of course tho 😢

Him pitching/making the Jhiaxian academy of advanced technology is huge. Then all the experiments he did once he was turned purple 💀💀💀

Him going to Dai Atlas and injuring him before the attack on the senate so that he would escape death was a cool surprise. He's still in there ;_; ahhhh.

There is another story that happens in current time where Bee gets turned into Goldbug, but I think he's called "Goldfire" here? 🤔 He really got injured during the whole thing with Meg's so they had to fix him up with pieces of his old earth form.

It was cool to see included in the story :3

Final Random Thoughts:

This volume had a bunch of great stories in it! And I learned quite a bit about characters I like!

Though it was sad, I'd say my favorite story was the mtmte one with Overlord (The Overlord arc?). The art is always fantastic and so is the story!

I look forward to reading more and I'll be making another reading update very soon since I'm already on volume 6!

I didn't want to lump them all together bc I like using images as the story breaks and Tumblr only let's you use 10 per post 😔 Also... I ramble quite a lot haha, so 3 volumes worth would definitely be too much! 😂

To get better at drawing transformers, I wanna try reading through MTMTE while making a sketch sheet from each issue. It's fun so far, but I get the feeling that the issues illustrated by Milne are going to drive me batty lol

Every time I see something along the lines of "Megatron was a slave because he was oppressed and forced to work in the mines, forced labour is slavery and oppression is slavery so what happened to Megatron was obviously slavery" a question mark pops up in my head and it's so fucking funny because. Social studies. History. Basic literary analysis skills.

Like I'm gonna be assuming whoever's in the 'Megatron was a slave' camp is talking about idw1 and tfp b/c those are the only two continuities that have Megatron coming from an oppressed background in depth. If it's idw1 then how could anyone miss the obvious communism reference in Megatron Origin? (Guaranteed it's a loose, twisted, villifying, Western-lensed, not-very-good reference, but point is that it's OBVIOUS and unmistakably RECOGNIZABLE.) Workers' revolt ring a bell? It's the first issue in the collection volumes so even if people run out of patience without finishing anything they should have been able to at least get through that before, y'know, making unfounded claims about canon. And the stuff I'm talking about should've been evident in the first chapter. Were the miners upset because they were forced to work in the mines? No, they were upset because the government was closing the mines and laying them off and replacing them with automation; they were upset because soon there would be no mines left for them to work and then they would starve.

'Slavery is forced labour' yeah but uh that's only one facet of it. Forced labour because of livelihood: 'I have to work here b/c it's the only job that's available to me and I have no means of obtaining the skills/licence/opportunity for a different job or bettering my circumstances, if I quit I'll have no income/food/shelter and starve out on the streets' is fundamentally different from forced labour due to state institution of ownership over people: 'I have to work here because I am the private property of the facility owner and am forbidden by law to leave or quit.'

Does anyone like, not see the difference between the two scenarios? Only the latter would be slavery since it has the defining characteristics of 1. legalization of the ownership of people and 2. restriction of liberty. In concurrence. The first scenario's just describing what every fucking exploited worker/peasant/wage-earning lowclass commoner in the world looks like, it's called proletarianism. It's a completely different class category in a completely different social structure that's in no way interchangeable or confusable with slavery unless you want to say that communist revolutions were done by slaves and every wage worker in the industrial revolution was a slave. why not go back further while at it and serfdom can be slavery feudalism is slavery indentureship corvee conscription are all slavery lmao way to rewrite history.

For the people who's only read MTMTE and nothing else there's even a specific scene in there that says this 🔽

This is talking about Rewind. The text literally gives us what used to be the equivalent in Cybertronian society and it's clearly not Megatron's class. And why was Rewind's class equated to slaves? Because they were considered disposable tools, not sentient people. The Ambus Test helped them get rights by proving their sentience as people, which further proves that they don't keep sentient people as slaves.

If it's TFP then did anyone notice that Megatron started as a miner but met Optimus as a gladiator? If he was so absolutely forced to work in the mines as a slave then how was he allowed to leave?

This is how Covenant of Primus describes Megatron going to work in the mines. It's "the only opening available to him". It doesn't say that he's assigned a master at birth and was legally obligated to go work in that opening on pain of punishment. Just implies that he'd be out of a job and income and would probably starve if he didn't. There's still an illusion of choice, of free will.

The closest thing Aligned had to slavery was the Quintession occupation era but the Covenant also spent a whole section talking about how it started out as a mutually beneficial relationship with the Quintessions presenting themselves as the more advanced race and Cybertronians eagerly accepting them as 'masters' (honourific term, not literal) in a pseudo colonizer-who-civilized-the-indigenous-barbarians-and-used-them-for-cheap-labour dynamic which got more and more exploitational as time went on until the Cybertronians had enough and drove them off. But even during the peak of occupation the Quintessions were still careful to give Cybertron the pretense of sovereignty. It was the Quintessions who introduced them to the electoral system and inaugurated the office of the Prime in the first place. The illusion of free will and equality was always there, despite everyone knowing otherwise.

Exodus is extremely clear in describing Cybertron as a birth-defined caste system with rigid hierarchy and little mobility. So that's exactly what it is. a caste system. Not a slave society. There's a reason they're different words, they're different concepts! I don't get why people would feel the need to replace one with the other, does slavery sound better? edgier? Is the purpose for making Megatron an ex-slave to have his backstory sound more tragic? to induce more sympathy? idc people are free to headcanon what they want but at least have the decency to refrain from framing it as canon and bashing other characters with it? Stuff like 'oh Optimus was so selfish/naive/entitled/stupid/insensitive/traitorous/opportunist/privileged to accept the prime title in front of Megatron the poor ex-slave' nevermind that Megatron had repeatedly expressed a desire for taking power through whatever cruel means necessary and was perfectly eager to become prime when he thought he was the one going to be chosen? Nevermind that the council offered up a chance for implementing all the social changes they wanted through legal means with the least amount of bloodshed and Megatron threw it all away b/c he didn't get to be in charge, by committing murder on the spot? Nevermind that 'Megatron the poor ex-slave' is a massive bigoted racist who looks down on Optimus' job and is disgusted by minicons and combiners and insecticons as well as being a devout believer of 'survival of the fittest and the rest don't deserve to live' -type social darwinism and a domestic terrorist happy to blow up factories full of his own caste members and places full of innocent people? Nevermind that Megatron and Optimus already had a deep rift between them because of Megatron betraying Optimus' trust by lying about his role in the bombings and Optimus already recognizing that their methods were never going to match up b/c of Megatron's disregard of innocent life and Megatron never really trusting Optimus anyway? As if making Megatron a slave somehow excuses all of that and pins all the blame on Optimus.

Very important advice for anyone who’s trying to get into Transformers IDW: the fandom makes the story sound much more coherent than it actually is.

This isn’t me saying “fandom is wrong and makes up headcanons,” this is me saying that IDW1 spans like 13 years with a shitton of different writers, and a lot of lore that it’s most well known for (e.g. Functionism) didn’t exist until the latter half of the continuity’s run time. Most, hell almost all of the pre-war lore wasn’t covered until phase 2, with rare exceptions like Megatron Origin and maybe a couple of the spotlight issues?

But what you need to know is that when you see fanon posts about IDW1, these are made by dedicated fans who are looking at the entire series in retrospect and applying the lore from the later phases to the entire timeline. These meta posts make the story really fun, but if you read the actual comics themselves (for example, most phase 1 stuff), the material won’t actually reference any of this neat lore because it literally didn’t exist. So I think a lot of TF fans are misled when they get into IDW1, thinking the entire continuity will be lore-rich and one coherent story, when in reality a lot of the famous lore wasn’t introduced until later so earlier phases of the story did not take this lore into account (because it literally didn’t exist when the earlier series were written).

This is also why I’m begging people who are just getting into IDW1 to try reading at least some of the phase 1 (aka during the war) comics. A lot of people say these series are “boring” but I have to disagree. I don’t think people should fault phase 1 for not including lore that literally wasn’t even invented yet, and imo there’s a lot of interesting material that you can pull from phase 1. At the very least, you need to read a few series of phase 1 to have context for why certain things are happening in phase 2.

Cyberpunk Tf Au Mega post : (WIP)

In this world all cities on Cybertron have dedicated musicians that are elected through the most popular vote. There is no war, but movements for the political system to be overrun and remade. Many of the elected musicians are there to help the people, to give them strength and courage to speak against the oppressive policies the government gives them.

The aesthetics of the people differ from city to city. (Examples)

Iacon: Synthwave/Vaporwave

Kaon: Dark Synthwave

The changes also go to the different genres of music the top musicians create and play in live shows.

Iacon: Chill Electronic/Pop/Etc.

Kaon: Phonk/Metal/Etc.

With the different types of music, there are collaborations to blend different types of music together! Granted I have only really thought about Megatron and Optimus so far in this Au, I'm playing on adding Elita-1 and a few others soon though!

These two are great friends, completely inseparable. (More so if you ship Megop, which is completely up to you if you do.)
