Neillian isn't the only one who was blessed by the changing room lighting Gods today ... Definitely the leanest I've been at 95kg, and with a new venture starting next week I expect to get a lot leaner in the coming months. Text
Week 19
Tuesday, February 28th 2017
We worked the last scenes or the performance (9 call them “straggler scenes”).
-For 10’s final scene, she enrols herself in a blanket: she enters a cocoon by herself and then frees herself from it like a butterfly (her monologue also plays with this metaphor). Her ending story is then about ESCTASY OF LOVE.
10 will take the blanket from the clothesline and drag it into the bathroom. She starts saying her text while enrolling herself with the material. As we do not have any silk for her first try, we can only assume that as she turns around, spirals will be formed on the silken cloth and look like the pattern on a cocoon. We need to rehearse this section more with, of course, the appropriate props.
-9 also had her first try on her final scene which is about Defilement “with a capital D”, also within the theme of ECSTASY OF LOVE. As she shares her story about a first kiss in her room, away from her parents’ eyes, she starts doing a striptease on the table on the song “I put a spell on you”. It is a lovely, intimate moment.
-My final scene is “Two Years”, about UNREQUITED LOVE, a monologue that I rehearsed several times already but still needs improvement. As I talk about a one-way love story, I put of my previous clothes and try different outfits, but end up standing with my underwear. I need to give greater prominence to my gestures but also to allow myself more moments of pause in order to contemplate my outfit. The success of this section will depend on the rhythm and the harmony between speech and moves.
Those three monologues can be considered as personal, non-permanent “conclusions” of our love stories. In a way, they all end up on a positive note and raises hope.
For the lights, we thought of putting 3 spotlights for the 3 monologues (one at a time).
We finished our session with the scene in the bathroom, when we share our personal experiences with sex. The spontaneous dialogues brought some good narrative material, however we shouldn’t completely rely on improvisation. Thereafter, we wrote a general script with the main themes we discuss.

We worked on the sections we will show to Pablo this afternoon.
-9’s Chapatti scene: she brought a new text which plays with the metaphor of marriage/chapatti: this new version is much better than the other tries because it brings more dynamic, makes more coherence with the action, is well-balanced and to the point.
-B’s Disney singing: I disperse clothes all over the place (also on my mates), whereas my housemates tidy up after me.
-10’s Basketball scene (Flings and Rebounds): this section needs to be choreographed to keep a certain energy and also to maintain a situation that is safe for the public. Indeed, the ball is heavy and could be quite dangerous if not manipulated with caution. Therefore, we tried to find different moves to do with the ball, which could be metaphors to the past relationships 10 is describing. We will all three be involved in this game and will also involve the audience at the end.
To finish with, we rehearsed the Love Potion scene, especially the order of the list of ingredients and our gestures as we turn around the basin.
Supervised rehearsal with Pablo – Feedback
-During 9’s monologue, 10 is sitting on the sofa, still heartbroken from her last experience, and doesn’t pay much attention to 9’s speech and cooking. By doing so, 10 disappeared in the background. She thus should try to create a stronger relationship with 9, be more present because for the moment there is a big discrepancy between this scene in the basketball scene where 10’s mood had suddenly changed (much more jovial).
-9’s monologue: the eye contact was good, 9 has a good presence (as she said, all her stories are above all delivered to and for the audience). However, it still lacks a bit relief. Could she play more with the dough, add things to it? Her scene also refers to cooking shows, she can keep this cheerfulness.
-B’s Disney scene: by the end of my song, when I come back from the audience and come closer to the microphone (fictive lover/prince charming), I could show that I experience a real (French!) kiss with the tongue, which will offer the public a hilarious moment. Pablo’s tip: As my actions and reactions are always over the top, I should enjoy the ridiculousness of my situations even more! :D
-10’s monologue/Basketball scene: this section brings a different atmosphere and breaks the domestic set. It is then a bit odd: where does the ball come from? We should maybe try other balls. The basketball is heavy, loud, it is an outdoor material: it doesn’t really fit within this setting. Furthermore, the scene got a bit confused: we must establish the rules of the game more clearly.
-Love Potion: 9 should emphasize her uncertainty, B her enthusiasm, 10 should work on the transition from total reluctance to more conviction. Moreover, the dancing bit around the basin is a bit too simple; we should choreograph it.
Friday, March 3rd 2017
We reworked all the scenes we showed to Pablo the day before. The Chapatti scene is stronger, Tendai exists more in this scene (was eating Thai food on sofa during rehearsal: great image that we will keep for this scene!) as she progressively shows more interest in 9’s story and cooking (little laughs, eye contact…). During my Disney song I am more ridiculous :D And as for the Basketball scene, we decided not to play all three with the ball: 10 will still dribble and involve the audience while telling her story, whilst 9 and I will be sitting on the sofa, watching a genuine basketball match that will be displayed in the background (the scores from the professionals will correlate with 10’s story).
Whilst sitting on the sofa, I had this image of eating popcorn until my mouth is full. I shared this idea with my colleagues who also saw the potential of this idea. We tried to integrate this to the basketball scene, as it could be a transition for the potion scene. We tried to add a discussion for this transition when our mouths are full, still we got a bit stuck and we finally ended this session.
Sunday, March 5th 2017
We started this last session of the week with administration work: we completed our risk assessment that we will give to Josh on the next day and we talked about the look of our fliers and the invit         ations online.
Also, we all agreed on the fact that even though our actual performance is working quite well and that the different scenes coordinated with each other, we knew that we could make this performance flow even better. So we sat down a moment a rearranged the order of our different sections. Here’s the final sequencing:
Bollywood Dance (opening)
Setting up the house (intro)
Crashed (Monologue 9)
Invisible crush on sofa (B)
Basketball (Monologue 10)
Disney song (B)
Chapathi (Monologue 9)
Bruva to Bruva (10)
Popcorn (All 3)
Potion (All 3)
Slow motion (B)
Film
Blanche realising her situation in audience (B)
Coward (Monologue 9)
Don’t worry Be happy (dance – new transition All 3)
Water + Shitlist (B)
Sex in the bathroom (All 3)
Defilement (Monologue 9)
Two Years (Monologue B)
Butterfly (Monologue 10)
Hip-hop Dance (All 3 END)
We now feel much more comfortable with this new order and feel that we finally reached a higher level with our performance!
Now off to our evening together with succulent Rice and Curry, Mac’n Cheese and Chocolate Fondants! :D See you in a bit!
