Coding from Home 5 took a look at Unesco’s work to support teachers, AI resources and gave a sneak preview of the Coding@Home tutorials

During the 5th Coding from home webinar participants got a preview of the Coding@Home tutorials that will be released at the end of the week. They also learned about the free massive online course Elements of AI and about Microsoft’s resources targeting girls wanting to learn more about artificial intelligence (AI). Moreover, Valtencir Mendes presented Unesco’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic for education. The recording of the webinar is on Youtube. 

Alessandro Bogliolo, Professor of Information Processing Systems at the University of Urbino, Italian EU Code Week ambassador and coordinator of all ambassadors, presented the Coding@Home series. It is a collection of 10-15 min videos, do-it-yourself materials, puzzles, games, and coding challenges that can be used at home or in school.

The activities are unplugged and participants do not need any previous knowledge of coding. Kids can play the games with their families or online with their teachers.

The purpose of the Coding@Home activities are to stimulate computational thinking and cover basic principles such as instructions, conditional statements, loops, cryptography, pixel art, drawings, etc., but the main principle is playfulness.

The series is published on the EU Code Week website and will be translated into all the website’s languages. More than 20 videos are in the pipeline, with three being released this week. It builds on Alessandro’s “Coding in famiglia” initiative, which is available on Rai Cultura.

Valtencir M. Mendes, Project Officer in the Global Education Coalition team at Unesco, presented Unesco´s Covid-19 response. An unprecedented 1.3 billion students across the world have been impacted by schools closing down, affecting the most vulnerable groups the hardest. Their platform includes links to national platforms, distance learning solutions, webinars to support teachers on topics such as ensuring equity in all learning solutions, exams and assessments etc. Valtencir invited the EU Code Week community to share their experience and “Tell your story”.

Unesco is also looking at good practices for girls who want to learn coding and STEM and what influences them to study these subjects. Valtencir’s full presentation is available on Slideshare.

Next, Kate Barnes Microsoft, Manager Strategic Partnerships, Philanthropies at Microsoft, introduced the Alice envisions the future a resource page with classes, tutorials, practical examples such as how to build a chat bot. It targets 12-18 year old girls interested in learning artificial intelligence (AI). No prior knowledge of coding is needed to take part.

Ville Sinisalo, Reaktor, spoke about Elements of AI, a free online 25-hour course on the basics of artificial intelligence. The course has five modules that cover what AI is – and is not; Solving problems with AI, Real world and AI, Machine learning and Neural networks. After the course participants are expected to understand the basics of AI, think critically about AI news and be able to discuss and have an founded opinion about artificial intelligence.

The course is open to anyone with a curious mind. No programming skills are needed. Since May 2018, 420,000 students between 16 and 82 years of age have registered in 170 countries. The goal to reach 1% of the Finnish population has already been reached and now the target is to reach 1% of Europe’s population. To this end the European Commission has translatedthe course into all EU languages. Elements of AI is currently available in English, Estonian, Finnish, German, Norwegian and Swedish, with more languages coming soon. A second, more in-depth course is being prepared, which will be published later this year.

Finally, Annika Östergren Pofantis, EU code Week coordinator, encouraged participants to spread the word about the 5-hour introductory “Icebreaker” online course that will start on Monday 11 May. It targets teachers and other activity organisers with a curious mind who want to learn some basics about computational thinking and coding, get practical tips on how to set up engaging activities and to take part in Code Week.

RUIDOZ 2.3 :

Fix: Loss of some pitch parameters values when you re-open the instrument as a plugin. A new switch have been implemented in the GUI for enabling the LFO and avoid the pitch parameter to be set on its default value.

VOZ 1.3 :

Voice numbers (which define the polyphony and the number of similtanous notes interpreted) have been change from 8 to 4 to reduce CPU consumption, but it can now been manually set in the properties of the ensemble in “edit” mode.

New switch in the GUI for getting access on the 3 new female formants banks & 5 additional empty user banks where you can drag n’ drop your own sample collection.

AETØNZ 1.4 & SUBSTANZ 1.4 :

No change except that the structure is now open.

HOW TO INSTALL THE UPDATES : – Before anything, rename the old folder (e.g. “VOZ 1.2” -> “VOZ 1.2_old” or so). Keep it as an archive to be sure saving a copy of your personal settings. – Unzip and place the full new folder which contains the update in the same previous path. When you overwrite the old .nicnt with the new .nicnt the version number doesn’t get updated in Native Access at the moment, you need to use the ‘Repair’ feature in Native Access. – Open Native Access and see the “Repair” button show up (because Native Access can’t find the (i.e.) 1.2. .nicnt any more) – Now click “Relocate” and point to the new folder (e.g. “VOZ 1.3”) – A rescan of the product in Komplete Kontrol or Maschine preferences would be best afterwards as well. Planen wir unsere Aufgabenpakete, setzen wir Prioritäten. Bewusst oder unbewusst sehen wir manche Aufgaben als eher unwichtig an, während wir anderen unterdessen eine höhere Relevanz zusprechen. Dieser Prozess ist ganz alltäglich und eine absolute Grundvoraussetzung dafür, sich und seinen Arbeitstag überhaupt ansatzweise strukturieren zu können. So weit, so gut. Doch während wir die Aufgabenpakete gewichten, einstufen und terminieren, sind wir nicht allein. Wir tragen immer einen unliebsamen Begleiter bei uns. Das Unterbewusstsein. Trotz aller Selbstdisziplin – und sei sie noch so stark – geben wir uns Tag für Tag unserem Unterbewusstsein geschlagen, das unsere Karriere auszubremsen versucht.

Erste Anzeichen für Kontrollverlust

Sicherlich ist dir bereits des Öfteren aufgefallen, dass manche Aufgaben eine halbe Ewigkeit deiner Zeit beanspruchen, ohne dass es überhaupt auffällt oder es als sonderlich belastend wahrgenommen wird. Du recherchierst kurz etwas, das du neulich nebenbei im Radio aufgeschnappt hast und verlierst dich schleichend in spannenden Insights. Oder du schaust noch schnell ein kleines Tutorial-Video zu einem Thema, das dich ohnehin schon immer interessiert hat; ehe du dich versiehst hast du noch vier weitere Tutorials dieser Reihe verschlungen.

Für Dinge, die uns besonders begeistern, setzen wir überdurchschnittlich viele Energie- und Zeitressourcen frei. Dabei sind die Dinge nicht immer diejenigen, die auch auf der Prioritätenliste ganz oben stehen sollten. Wir investieren viel Zeit und Energie in verhältnismäßig unwichtige Handlungen. Das erkennen wir ganz besonders dann, wenn es beispielsweise darum geht, die Folien einer Präsentation aufwändig zu gestalten anstatt sich mindestens genauso aufwändig mit der Recherche und Konzeption der eigentlichen Inhalte zu beschäftigen.

Komplexität schlägt Disziplin

Leidige Themen sowie unangenehme Aufgaben schieben wir ebenso gerne vor uns her wie komplexe Sachverhalte, in die wir uns zunächst einmal einarbeiten müssten. Komplexität wirkt auf uns meist abschreckend, unangenehm und unattraktiv, sodass wir ihr nur oberflächlich Beachtung schenken oder sie gar ganz missachten. Leider äußert sich das Missverhältnis aus aufgebrachter Zeit für Wichtiges und Unwichtiges langfristig durch misslungene Projekte, nicht eingehaltene Deadlines, Verlust der Selbstorganisation und Gleichgültigkeit.

Es liegt wie immer an uns selbst

Die Begründung für unliebsame Phänomene wie dieses geben uns die sogenannten cognitive biases, also kognitive Verzerrungen bzw. Wahrnehmungsverzerrungen. Kognitive Verzerrungen beschreiben fehlerhafte Neigungen von Menschen, die unbewusst und ungeplant auftreten. Oftmals kann man sie bei einer Vielzahl von Personen mit ähnlichen Mustern beobachten. Kognitive Verzerrungen werden in der Psychologie wissenschaftlich beschrieben, beeinflussen diverse Bereiche des täglichen Lebens und haben nicht zuletzt deshalb auch einen großen Einfluss auf arbeitspsychologische Prozesse. Übertragen wir das Thema der cognitive biases also auf die Arbeitswelt.

Was uns die Diskussion über einen einfachen Kaffee lehrt

Sich unverhältnismäßig viel mit Kleinigkeiten zu befassen und nebensächliche Punkte auf der Tagesordnung bis ins kleinste Detail auseinanderzunehmen, kennt man mittlerweile leider aus beliebigen Meetings. Das sogenannte Law of triviality – Gesetz der Trivialität – widmet sich dieser verbreitet auftretenden Unsitte. Der britische Soziologe C. Northcote Parkinson hat das Gesetz der Trivialität besonders im Kontext von Verwaltungsapparaten untersucht. Er führt hierzu das wohl bekannteste und gleichzeitig erstaunlichste Negativbeispiel an: In seiner Ausarbeitung schildert er den Verlauf einer Finanzausschuss-Sitzung, dessen Tagesordnung gleichermaßen die Bewilligung eines 10-Millionen-Dollar-Atomreaktors, die Verabschiedung eines Fahrradunterstandes im Wert von 2.350 Dollar und die Versorgung des Ausschusses mit Kaffee im Wert von monatlich 4,75 Dollar vorsieht.

Entgegen der zunächst offensichtlichen Vermutung, dass ein komplexes Thema wie die Bewilligung des Atomreaktors auch den größten Diskussions- und Gesprächsanteil einnimmt, verliert sich der Ausschuss in kleinen unwichtigen Details. So ist die Bewilligung des Reaktors am Ende eine Sache von rund zwei Minuten, während die Verabschiedung des Fahrradstandes bereits 45 Minuten und die Kaffeeversorgung sage und schreibe mehr als eine Stunde der Sitzung beansprucht. Parkinson stellt fest, dass die „auf einen Tagesordnungspunkt verwendete Zeit umgekehrt proportional zu den jeweiligen Kosten“ verläuft.

Man kann die Schlussfolgerung ausdehnen und feststellen: Themen mit größerer Komplexität werden beiläufig abgetan, obwohl ihre Auswirkungen weitaus größere Kreise zögen als die der unwichtigeren Themen. Woran liegt das?

Wenn du nicht mehr weiterweißt, bilde einen Arbeitskreis

Menschen tendieren dazu, Dinge, mit denen sie sich unmittelbar identifizieren können, detaillierter zu beleuchten. Die Kaffeeversorgung für eine Ausschusssitzung ist trivial und erzeugt bei jedem Gesprächsteilnehmer eine eindeutige, individuelle Meinung. Jeder kann mitreden. So geschieht es, dass aus dem Arbeitskreis schnell einen Gesprächsstrudel wird, in dem sich die Teilnehmer um jedwedes Detail drehen. Bei Atomreaktoren betritt die Mehrheit hingegen unbekanntes Terrain. Zusammenhänge sind zu komplex, Investitionen zu hoch, und das Fachwissen zu gering, um einen umfassenden, heterogenen Austausch darüber entstehen zu lassen. Entscheidungen werden innerhalb kürzester Zeit durchgewunken, von wenigen Entscheidern getroffen oder in die Tagesordnung der nächsten Sitzung verlegt.

Das sollte uns bei der Karriere nicht weiter im Weg stehen

Ähnlich verhält es sich in der Regel bei der Studien- und Berufswahl. Die weittragende Entscheidung für oder gegen einen Job wird an oberflächlichen Informationen festgemacht. Häufig gehen wir den Weg des geringsten Widerstandes, anstatt uns mit Hilfe einer gewissenhaften Abwägung aller Rahmenbedingungen letztlich für das zu entscheiden, was uns langfristig die größte Perspektive bietet. Wir ernten rasch die tiefhängenden Früchte, anstatt einen Schritt zurück zu gehen und festzustellen, dass mit etwas Arbeit und Aufwand auch die prächtigeren Früchte weiter oben im Baum erreicht werden könnten.

Ähnlich wie die Mitglieder des Finanzausschusses den Atomreaktor behandeln, drehen sich junge Menschen um die Komplexität der eigenen Karriere. Geht es um langfristige Karrierevorstellungen überkommt einen häufig das Gefühl von gähnender Leere und Ungewissheit. Es stellt sich die Frage: Kann man dieses komplexe Gebilde in diesem frühen Status des Lebens überhaupt verstehen, geschweige denn eine fundierte Entscheidung treffen? Das alles, obwohl einem die exakten Studieninhalte, die Tätigkeiten im Job, Gehalts- und Zeitstrukturen oder gar Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten noch so fremd vorkommen? Zugegeben, es fällt schwer. Doch auch hier ist vieles eine Frage der richtigen Zielsetzung.

Den Delmore Effekt besiegen und einfacher Ziele erreichen

An dieser Stelle wollen wir ein weiteres Phänomen der cognitive biases heranziehen, um uns der Herausforderung allmählich anzunähern. Wir haben bereits festgestellt, dass uns das Gesetz der Trivialität unbewusst dazu verleitet, große Ressourcen für verhältnismäßig unwichtige Aspekte zu binden. Betrachten wir die Zielsetzung, die für die Verteilung und Priorisierung der Aufgaben zunächst einmal entscheidend sein sollte, finden wir eine große Parallele. Diese Parallele nennt sich Delmore-Effekt.

Wie im Falle des Parkinsonschen Gesetzes der Trivialität tun wir uns auch bei komplexeren Zieldefinitionen in entfernterer Zukunft schwerer als bei jenen Definitionen, die unkompliziertere Ziele in der nahen Zukunft betreffen. Der Delmore Effekt nach Paul Whitmore besagt, dass wir unfähig sind, langfristige und wichtige Ziele treffend zu artikulieren, während wir für kurzfristige und nicht so entscheidende Angelegenheiten deutlich explizitere Definitionen tätigen können. Je wichtiger etwas für uns ist, desto geringer fällt unsere Bereitschaft und Fähigkeit aus, dies an konkreten Zielen festzumachen.

Der Delmore-Effekt wurde übrigens nach dem amerikanischen Schriftsteller und Dichter Delmore Schwartz benannt, dem man als junges Talent ursprünglich eine vielversprechende Karriere voraussagte. Nach anfänglich großem Erfolg manövrierte er sich allerdings in einen Abwärtsstrudel, der unter anderem durch Alkoholismus und Wahnsinn geprägt war und ihn früh zum Tod führte.

Die Liste der cognitive biases ist lang

Wir halten also fest, dass unser Arbeitsleben ebenso kognitiven Verzerrungen ausgesetzt ist wie der eigentliche Weg dahin. Bereits bei der Karrierezielsetzung im jungen Alter sind uns aufgrund einiger cognitive biases die Hände oder besser gesagt die Gedanken gebunden. Wir finden uns schneller in einer tiefen Orientierungslosigkeit wieder als uns lieb sein kann. Die Geschichte der darauf aufbauenden Karriere ist dann schnell erzählt: Fehlentscheidungen. Misserfolg. Mangelnde Identifikation. Demotivation. Das Setzen von Karrierezielen und die Erfüllung von entsprechenden Aufgaben ist für uns zu komplex. Wir flüchten uns in einfache, unwichtigere Tätigkeiten, von denen wir uns einerseits Erfüllung versprechen und in denen wir andererseits Bestätigung suchen. Der Delmore Effekt und das Gesetz der Trivialität sind nur zwei Beispiele für cognitive biases. Und bereits sie packen uns mit voller Wucht. Können wir uns diese kognitiven Verzerrungen denn nun irgendwie zunutze machen oder sind wir als junge Talente von Grund auf dazu verdammt, uns den Schnippchen unseres Unterbewusstseins geschlagen zu geben?

So kommen wir raus aus der Negativspirale

Es würde an Märchenpsychologie und Schönwetterphilosophie grenzen, nun einfach den primitiven Ratschlag zu geben, sich im „Just-do-it-Stil“ viel häufiger mit den komplexen Sachverhalten des Lebens zu beschäftigen. Am Ende würde es beim gut gemeinten Ratschlag bleiben, aber kein wirklich anwendbarer Lösungsweg entstehen. Vielmehr möchten wir euch versuchen, die folgenden zehn Lösungsansätze mit auf den Weg zu geben, die wir für sehr hilfreich empfinden, um cognitive biases den Kampf anzusagen:

Komplexe Dinge einfacher ausdrücken. 
 So komplex, undurchsichtig oder ungewiss eine Aufgabe bzw. ein Ziel auch scheinen mag, es sollte immer eine Möglichkeit geben, diese auf das nötige Minimum herunterzubrechen. Getreu unserer Ausführungen zum Gesetz der Trivialität muss es also stets unser Ansporn sein, komplexe Dinge ebenfalls trivial zu machen. Einfache Sprache und wenige konkrete Sätze sollten eingrenzen, was man erreichen möchte. Ziel ist es, Kompaktheit, Konkretheit und Aussagekraft zu vereinen. Das beste Beispiel für derart einfache, aber eindrückliche Aussagen sind Redewendungen. Sie bestechen durch wenige Worte, eine klare Botschaft und offenes Identifikationspotenzial für Jedermann.

Teilziele definieren. 
 Komplexität einfach auszudrücken führt an einigen Stellen nicht daran vorbei, ein globales Gesamtziel in verschiedene Teilziele aufzugliedern. Das trägt dazu bei, aus einem undurchsichtigen und unplanbaren Ziel, mehrere kleine Etappen zu kreieren, die sich deutlich einfacher artikulieren lassen.

Das SMART-Prinzip anwenden. 
Um Ziele eben noch treffender artikulieren zu können, bietet sich die beliebte SMART-Formel an. Demnach sind Ziele nie wahllos umherschwebende Wolken aus Ideen und inhaltsleeren Sätzen, sondern klare Aussagen. Kurzum: Ziele müssen spezifisch, messbar, attraktiv, realistisch und terminiert sein. Erinnern wir uns an die Problematik des Delmore-Effekts, stellen wir fest, dass wohl keiner der fünf Punkte vollständig erfüllt war.

Ziele feiern. 
 „Der letzte Punkt eines guten Projektplans ist immer die Abschlussfeier“ – diesen Satz einer ehemaligen Dozentin haben wir heute noch im Ohr als wäre es gestern gewesen. Fakt ist: Sie hat Recht! Allerdings nur eingeschränkt. Denn nicht nur das Ende eines Projekts sollte gefeiert werden; auch erreichte Teilziele müssen sich einem gebührenden Rahmen erfreuen. Dabei kann das Feiern auch als Äquivalent für eine Belohnung, ein positives Feedback oder eine Erholungspause gesehen werden.

Den Fokus finden und behalten. 
 Man möge die Aussage des Textes nicht falsch verstehen. Es muss nicht immer alles bis ins kleinste Detail verstanden und geplant werden. Das Hauptaugenmerk muss darauf liegen, den Fokus – oder auch „Core“ bzw. „Purpose“ – zu ergründen. Ob als junges Talent oder gestandene Führungskraft, die Marschroute muss nicht komplett ausgearbeitet sein. Was aber durchaus vorhanden sein sollte, ist eine Mission sowie eine glaubwürdige Absicht, die nach innen und außen für Identifikation sorgt. Nicht umsonst haben wir mit unserem neuen Podcast-Format „Find your purpose“ ein Zeichen in diese Richtung gesetzt. Hier geht’s zum Podcast.

Rechtfertigungen und Entschuldigungen vermeiden. 
 Am Ende ist man nicht nur schlauer, sondern meistens derart unzufrieden mit dem Endergebnis, dass man überall nach Rechtfertigung sucht - sich selbst ausgenommen. Dabei sind Rechtfertigungen und Entschuldigungen feige. Sie zeugen nicht gerade von einem smart verfolgten Plan, geschweige denn von einer intakten Fehleranalyse.

Aus der negativen selbsterfüllenden Prophezeiung ausbrechen. 
Sich im Nachhinein für etwas zu rechtfertigen äußert sich meist in Sätzen wie „ich habe es vorher gewusst“ oder „war doch klar“. In diesen Sätzen schwingt die negative Konnotation mit, bereits vor Antritt eines Projekts das Scheitern vorhergesehen zu haben. Unbewusst wirkt sich das negativ auf die Ausübung aller Aufgaben auf diesen Weg aus - die sogenannte negative selbsterfüllende Prophezeiung (self-fulfilling prophecy).

Resilienz trainieren. 
 Trotz aller Ratschläge kann es immer wieder zu Rückschlägen und Misserfolg kommen. Sich dann nicht das Ruder aus der Hand nehmen zu lassen, ist ein Handwerk, das verstanden sein muss. Das Stichwort ist Resilienz. Was vielen wohl eher unter dem Begriff „dickes Fell“ bekannt sein dürfte, richtet sich letztendlich an die Widerstandsfähigkeit und Stabilität, mit der Rückschläge mehr oder weniger „unbeschadet“ wegstecken zu können.

Vom Generalisten zum Spezialisten werden. 
 Zu Beginn einer Karriere, gerade nach dem abgeschlossenen Erststudium, ist man mehr ein „Generalist“ als ein „Spezialist“. Breit aufgestelltes Grundwissen ohne große Expertise in einem Bereich. Wir erinnern uns an die Sitzung des Finanzausschusses und stellen fest: Als Generalist wird man wohl auch nur bei den Themen ausführlich mitreden, die trivial sind. Deshalb sollte es auf Dauer der Anspruch sein, das „ständige Lernen“ in eine bestimmte Fachrichtung zu lenken. So lässt sich rasch auch die bislang so wirre Komplexität mancher Sachverhalte ganz einfach erschließen. 

Nicht an „Aufschieberitis“ erkranken.

Reaktor Blocks: XYS

XYS overview: it’s essentially a sequencer, but its direction can be changed and offers additional modulation. It is used when routed into an OSC like the West Coast DWG.

The tutorial has the OSC run its Carrier Output into the input of the West Coast LPG. Out the LPG into a Level Stereo (utility) into 1) the final outputs and 2) some kind of summing module (has a star icon??) and into the In of the Scope module. It also has the gate output of a clock running into the pluck input of a West Coast LPG.

To set up the XYS, send the gate signal from the Clock to the Gate X and Gate Y input of the XYS. Run the Out Logic of the XYS to the carrier input of the OSC. At this point, remember to enable key tracking on the OSC. You can also change the reset value on the gate to alter the number of note pitch signals.

The clock gate values will trigger the XYS to play back at quarter, eighth, sixteenth note values and so on...

You can also toggle the gates on the XYS to provide different accents and rests.

Teach yourself about machine learning and artificial intelligence

Though you’ll hear near universal praise for data-driven decision-making, many companies haven’t yet been able to put such a strategy into practice. Why? Well, one barrier, acknowledged by 75 percent of marketers surveyed by Econsultancy last year, is that too few in the marketing realm have the requisite training and education on data and analytics, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

This situation leads both to hiring challenges and to great opportunities for those who possess or can develop the necessary skill set.

If your company or agency doesn’t already have training programs in place, you’d do well to take matters into your own hands, as there are myriad online offerings that allow you to school yourself on the latest technologies. And they’re not all oriented toward programmers, meaning they can help marketers understand the best use cases and necessary building blocks for employing machine learning and AI to best advantage.

1. Amazon’s “Machine Learning University”

The retail giant decided this week to open up its internal training programs to the wider world. Though Amazon’s own AWS offerings are a focus of a lot of the tutorials, these more than 30 self-service self-paced free digital courses also cover more general concepts that can be applied on other platforms.

The path most suitable for marketers will likely be the one aimed at business decision-makers and perhaps, for the geekier among us, those for data scientists.

“Regardless of where they are in their machine learning journey,” wrote AWS’ GM of AI, Matt Wood, “one question I hear frequently from customers is: ��how can we accelerate the growth of machine learning skills in our teams?‘”

Each training path progresses from courses aimed at defining and demystifying artificial intelligence, to classes that explore specific applications of such technologies (using AWS applications, natch). Each course is labeled as foundational/fundamental, intermediate or advanced, so you can proceed at your own pace.

Demystifying DL/ML/AI (fundamental)

Machine Learning for Business Challenges (fundamental)

Machine Learning Use Case: Call Center (fundamental)

Communicating with Chat Bots (intermediate)

2. Learn from Google AI

Just as Google offers its own cloud services related to machine learning and AI, it also aims to educate developers and business decision-makers about the technologies’ capabilities.

The Google resources include everything from videos to hour-long courses to example code and hands-on guides. As with Amazon, you can select your role to find resources that are most likely to be useful, at the correct depth and applicable to the stage of the AI/machine learning process you’re engaged in. The options here that seem most applicable to marketers include: business decision-maker, data scientist and … curious cat.

Yufeng Guo uses down-to-earth examples to explain AI concepts.

3. Elements of AI – Reaktor and University of Helsinki

Finnish business consultancy Reaktor, which works with clients like HBO, Airbus, Nokia and News Corp, collaborated with the University of Helsinki to put together this in-depth online course series, which begins with “What is AI” and continues to explore both the applications and implications of the technologies.

Though the curriculum is designed, according to the site, to expect no pre-existing knowledge beyond basic math, the courses will require a significant commitment. Going through the entire series is expected to take 6 weeks or more — though the designers recommend setting yourself a 6-week deadline to get the most out of the material. Each of the six parts is designed to take 5 to 10 hours, depending on how much you explore related links.

Unlike some of the other possibilities, Elements of AI is completely text- and image-based — though there are sections that ask you to interact by making a drawing, taking a quiz or doing something similar — and therefore it may be more difficult than getting a grasp on these concepts with the help of video.

It’s also structured as one course for everyone, regardless of their business role or area of interest, which inevitably means that it’s more general. The positive there is that it’s a great easy-to-understand primer, and you can even get credit for taking the course through the University of Helsinki’s Open University program.
