Did you know people will shell out thousands of thousands of dollars to live in, stay in, or just visit haunted houses?
So I had this idea for an absolutely horrible Real Estate Scheme.
Step one: Buy a piece of real estate.
House, town house, just some place where you are the person who gets paid rent. Works best with a place older than 30.
Step 2: Make sure everything is up to code/livable/in your name.
Also get the house history.
Step 3: Moving in!
Have a friend move in, move in yourself, or fake it. Just make it look like someone tried to move in.
Step 4: Rumors.
That friend I mentioned? You and them start running the rumor mill. Nothing super big needs to happen to you specifically, but you CAN tell people you heard there was a murder or something there when the house was first built.
Step 5: Flee for your lives!
Have your renter, or fake renter, 'flee for their lives'. Just dip out of nowhere, sudden for sale sign. Pretend nothing is wrong if people ask, be SUPER shady.
Step 6: Repeat steps 3-5
Step 7: Stir Sh*t
While all this is going on stir sh*t on social media. That should be happening with the rumors anyway, but have some fake discourse, show some "proof". Maybe go to an antique store and buy some vaguely creepy items to stash around the house.
Step 8: Bring in a Psychic.
Doesn't need to be a real psychic, but both will give you the same script anyway. It'll help with the rumors to have a "respectable" source.
Step 9: If you think the rumors have gotten enough attention move on to step 10, if not repeat steps 3-5. Keep doing this until either the rumors work, or you decide to give up.
Step 10: Advertise your haunted house!
The fish biting? Reel them in!
Step 11:... Profit!!!

Difference Between Java and JavaScript
When it comes to programming, Java and JavaScript are two of the most widely used languages. Despite their similar names, they are quite different in terms of functionality, usage, and even underlying principles. This often leads to confusion among beginners who may assume that the two technologies are related. However, understanding the differences between Java and JavaScript can give developers the clarity they need to decide which tool is best suited for their specific needs.
In this blog, we will explore the key differences between Java and JavaScript by discussing their features, syntax, platforms, and use cases. By the end, you will have a clearer understanding of when and why to use each of these languages.
1. What is Java?
Java is a powerful, object-oriented programming (OOP) language developed by Sun Microsystems (now owned by Oracle). It was first released in 1995 and is designed to be a platform-independent language that allows developers to "write once, run anywhere." This means that Java code can be written on one platform (e.g., Windows, macOS, Linux) and run on any device that has a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed. The JVM translates the compiled Java bytecode into machine-specific code, making it platform-independent.
Java is primarily used for developing standalone applications, large enterprise systems, Android applications, and server-side applications. It’s known for its stability, scalability, and performance.
2. What is JavaScript?
JavaScript, on the other hand, is a lightweight, interpreted scripting language that was created for web development. Originally designed to run in web browsers, it allows developers to create dynamic and interactive elements on websites. JavaScript was created by Brendan Eich at Netscape Communications in 1995 and has since evolved into one of the most important languages in web development.
JavaScript is a client-side language, which means it runs in the browser, but it can also be used on the server side through Node.js. Unlike Java, JavaScript is not a strictly object-oriented language; it supports multiple programming paradigms such as procedural, functional, and event-driven programming.
3. Syntax Differences Between Java and JavaScript
One of the most noticeable differences between Java and JavaScript lies in their syntax. While they may share some similar constructs (like curly braces for code blocks), the syntax rules and programming paradigms they follow are quite different.
Java is a statically-typed language, meaning that you must declare the type of variable before using it. For example:javaCopyint number = 10; String message = "Hello, World!"; The types (like int and String) must be specified and can’t be changed once the variable is declared.
JavaScript, on the other hand, is dynamically typed. This means you do not have to specify the type of the variable before using it, and the type can change as the program runs. For example:javascriptCopylet number = 10; let message = "Hello, World!"; Here, the type of number and message is determined dynamically at runtime.
4. Compiling vs. Interpreting
Another significant difference between Java and JavaScript is how they are executed.
Java is a compiled language. This means that Java code is first written and then compiled into bytecode by a Java compiler. The bytecode is platform-independent and can be run on any device that has a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This provides portability and allows Java applications to run across different systems without modification.Steps in Java Execution:
Write Java source code (.java file).
Compile the code using a Java compiler, which converts it into bytecode (.class file).
The bytecode is then executed by the JVM.
JavaScript, on the other hand, is an interpreted language, which means the code is executed line-by-line by an interpreter (usually within a web browser). The JavaScript engine in a browser reads the JavaScript code, interprets it, and executes it in real-time.Steps in JavaScript Execution:
Write JavaScript code (.js file).
The code is directly interpreted and executed by a web browser or JavaScript runtime environment like Node.js.
5. Execution Environment
Java and JavaScript also differ greatly in terms of their execution environments:
Java is typically used for building standalone applications that run on the JVM. These applications can be anything from mobile apps (Android) to large-scale enterprise applications or even desktop software.
JavaScript, on the other hand, is designed for web development. It is mostly used to create dynamic web pages, handle user interactions, and perform client-side tasks. JavaScript code runs within a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and can also run on the server side through Node.js.
6. Object-Oriented vs. Multi-Paradigm
Java is primarily an object-oriented programming (OOP) language, which means it is based on the principles of encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism. Java focuses heavily on classes and objects, and most Java programs are organized around these core concepts.
JavaScript, however, is a multi-paradigm language. While it can support object-oriented programming (OOP) through prototypes, it also supports functional programming and event-driven programming. JavaScript uses prototypes for inheritance rather than classes (though modern JavaScript has introduced classes, they are syntactic sugar over prototypes).
7. Memory Management
Both Java and JavaScript have automatic memory management, but they handle it differently:
Java uses garbage collection to automatically manage memory. The JVM’s garbage collector automatically frees up memory that is no longer in use. Java also allows developers to manually control memory management through various memory allocation techniques.
JavaScript also uses garbage collection for memory management, but since JavaScript runs in a single-threaded environment (in the browser), memory management is typically more lightweight and less complex compared to Java.
8. Use Cases
The primary use cases for each language highlight their distinct roles in the software development landscape.
Java:
Enterprise Applications: Java is often used in large-scale business systems due to its scalability, robustness, and extensive libraries.
Mobile Development: Java is the official language for Android app development.
Backend Systems: Java powers many server-side applications, particularly in environments that require high performance.
Embedded Systems: Java is used in various embedded systems due to its portability and efficiency.
JavaScript:
Web Development: JavaScript is essential for front-end web development, enabling dynamic and interactive web pages.
Backend Development: With the rise of Node.js, JavaScript can also be used on the server side to build web servers and APIs.
Mobile Apps: JavaScript frameworks like React Native and Ionic allow developers to create mobile applications for both iOS and Android.
Game Development: JavaScript is increasingly used in building browser-based games or game engines like Phaser.js.
9. Performance
Performance is another area where Java and JavaScript differ significantly.
Java generally performs better in comparison to JavaScript because it is a compiled language. The compiled bytecode is optimized by the JVM and can be executed more efficiently. Java is well-suited for large-scale applications that require high performance.
JavaScript is typically slower than Java due to its interpreted nature and the overhead involved in real-time interpretation. However, JavaScript has made significant strides in performance, especially with modern engines like V8 (used in Google Chrome and Node.js), which optimize execution.
10. Learning Curve
Java can be more difficult to learn for beginners because it’s a statically-typed language with a focus on OOP principles. The syntax and structure are more complex, and it requires understanding various programming concepts such as classes, interfaces, and inheritance.
JavaScript is often considered easier to learn, especially for web developers, because it is dynamically typed and has a simpler syntax. Additionally, JavaScript is very forgiving with variable types, making it easier to experiment with code.
Conclusion
While Java and JavaScript have similar names, they are fundamentally different languages with different uses, execution models, and ecosystems. Java is a versatile, platform-independent, and high-performance language primarily used for backend applications, mobile development, and large-scale enterprise solutions. JavaScript, on the other hand, is a lightweight, interpreted language that powers the dynamic, interactive elements of the web.
Choosing between Java and JavaScript depends on the specific needs of your project. If you are working on a web-based application or interactive front-end elements, JavaScript will be the way to go. If you are building complex back-end systems, enterprise software, or mobile apps, Java might be more appropriate. Both languages are crucial in their own domains, and mastering them can open up a world of development opportunities.

STASH (a radical pro feminist movie written by a man)
In 2017 I wrote a script for a feature film called STASH. It is my debut feature & it took me months to get it ready for production. Once complete, the film had a limited online release & was adorned with heaps of praise from communities near & far.
A few mainstream viewers had an immediate problem with STASH but I put that down to personal taste, my low production values & just got on with life.
But last night I watched a Bell Hooks lecture on overcoming domination & in that talk she unwittingly shun a light on Black cultural production that made me look at my work through new eyes.
Her talk made me realise my film STASH is not just an Urban Crime Drama about choices. STASH is a radical feminist narrative which celebrates Black female empowerment from a pro womanist perspective & does so without using the standard mainstream tropes about crime, punishment or sexuality. STASH is packed with culturally relevant ideas & assumptions because its deeply rooted in Black spirituality, portrays its characters as strong yet rounded individuals & not as easily identifiable stereotypes.
No wonder some non-black audiences rejected STASH because it uses none of the white capitalist patriarchal story telling frameworks that permeates modern filmmaking. I had not thought of this until now but it explains so much.
For me, STASH challenges the notions of crime story telling by taking a radically different perspective. A perspective never before seen in European filmmaking. How? STASH roots itself in Black British middle class culture & not in Black working class culture. There are no ‘roadmen’ or ‘women’. There are no housing estates & inane language. All the criminal collectives in the story are part of a semi-secret society with its own rules & behaviours. The characters manage a criminal enterprise & are not trying to survive, they live well. But living well encourages the characters to feel entitled to more & thats the source of conflict in the story: greed.
STASH also takes the unusual position of assuming power is natural to the women of the story & unapologetically portrays varying degrees of power in its predominantly female cast. I did this because of my many intersections with successful Black women who practise both legal & illegal forms of work in real life, so the story is just an embelishment of that reality.
As the writer & director, I was not trying to exclude any group or pass judgement on the characters choices. I am also not trying to legitimise criminal activity. In STASH I tried to tell the best story I can with the tools available to me & from a perspective that is both real & refreshing to me.
Another quirk of this film is the choice of locations. Most of the scenes in STASH are deliberately long to have a more documentary feel & they take place inside residential spaces. This is so for I have come to believe the true Black Community in Britain only exists in private spaces. I believe once a Black person leaves their private space, no matter where they go in Britain, the space outside their home is transformed to a cosmopolitan or multicultural space. This is because the politics of the Black body means our sense of agency is determined by external perceptions of us (irrespective of our views of ourselves). This means the Black British person has to use different codes of conduct to interact with the world outside of their private spaces & much of this is an automatic shift for most Black British citizens. The duality of our lives is our homes act as sanctuary & everywhere else is often openly hostile & mistrustful of our existence. Being Black in Britain often means living with the assumption we are not citizens no matter how many generations you have lived here. We are frequently asked directly & indirectly about our ‘real’ origins. The assumption being we are not citizens. So we adapt our behaviours in many ways in order to put our fellow citizens at peace.
I actually came across this idea of ‘private space versus public space’ after years of observing two main types of conversations Black British people seem to have; one conversation takes place at home with family & friends that is honest & uncompromised. The other conversation takes place outside the home & is more politically correct & inclusive.
Over the years I have also seen how Black women use the private space for commerce, news sharing & social support because while doing hair or selling goods or hanging out in a kitchen at an event, the private space is a place of autonomy & power.
Its apparent to me that when you’re living in the shadow of one of the worlds most efficient practitioners of white capitalist patriarchy, the Black British community has developed incredible survival techniques which preserves our sanity, our sense of community & our cultural determination.
These general observations lead me to believe that true Blackness in Britain is found in private & culturally secluded spaces & those ideas inspired the visual narrative of STASH.
This is why the characters speak so honestly & openly to each other because they are in a safe, non-judgemental space. None of them have to take into account the feelings of anyone else. None of them have to tone down their language, volume or content to cater for the insecurities or ignorance of others. In STASH the characters are free to be, free to speak & free to pursue their version of life.
When I created STASH I wanted to tell a story about choices & about how ‘life changes’ can affect us in different ways but I ended up creating a dynamic pro-womanist narrative that rejects almost every notion of white capitalist patriarchal tropes in film & created a narrative that uses new visual languages to tell a radically different type of crime story full of spiritualism, love & hope.
I am extremely proud to call myself a feminist & I am so grateful for Bell Hooks whose talk made me re-address my own work…❁

I had a great week. There are some more login scripts and a bit of cleanup and speed-up.
The poll for what big thing I will work on next is up! Here are the poll + discussion thread:
https://www.poll-maker.com/poll2148452x73e94E02-60
https://8ch.net/hydrus/res/10654.html
login stuff
The new 'manage logins' dialog is easier to work with. It now shows when it thinks a login will expire, permits you to enter 'empty' credentials if you want to reset/clear a domain, and has a 'scrub invalid' button to reset a login that fails due to server error or similar.
After tweaking for the problem I discovered last week, I was able to write a login script for hentai foundry that uses username and pass. It should inherit the filter settings in your user profile, so you can now easily exclude the things you don't like! (the click-through login, which hydrus has been doing for ages, sets the filters to allow everything every time it works) Just go into manage logins, change the login script for www.hentai-foundry.com to the new login script, and put in some (throwaway) credentials, and you should be good to go.
I am also rolling out login scripts for shimmie, sankaku, and e-hentai, thanks to Cuddlebear (and possibly other users) on the github (which, reminder, is here: https://github.com/CuddleBear92/Hydrus-Presets-and-Scripts/tree/master/Download%20System ).
Pixiv seem to be changing some of their login rules, as many NSFW images now work for a logged-out hydrus client. The pixiv parser handles 'you need to be logged in' failures more gracefully, but I am not sure if that even happens any more! In any case, if you discover some class of pixiv URLs are giving you 'ignored' results because you are not logged in, please let me know the details.
Also, the Deviant Art parser can now fetch a sometimes-there larger version of images and only pulls from the download button (which is the 'true' best, when it is available) if it looks like an image. It should no longer download 140MB zips of brushes!
other stuff
Some kinds of tag searches (usually those on clients with large inboxes) should now be much faster!
Repository processing should also be faster, although I am interested in how it goes for different users. If you are on an HDD or have otherwise seen slow tag rows/s, please let me know if you notice a difference this week, for better or worse. The new system essentially opens the 'new tags m8' firehose pretty wide, but if that pressure is a problem for some people, I'll give it a more adaptable nozzle.
Many of the various 'select from a list of texts' dialogs across the program will now size themselves bigger if they can. This means, for example, that the gallery selector should now show everything in one go! The manage import/export folder dialogs are also moved to the new panel system, so if you have had trouble with these and a small screen, let me know how it looks for you now.
The duplicate filter page now has a button to edit your various duplicate merge options. The small button on the viewer was too-easily missed, so this should make it a bit easier!
full list
login:
added a proper username/password login script for hentai foundry--double-check your hf filters are set how you want in your profile, and your hydrus should inherit the same rules
fixed the gelbooru login script from last week, which typoed safebooru.com instead of .org
fixed the pixiv login 'link' to correctly say nsfw rather than everything, which wasn't going through last week right
improved the pixiv file page api parser to veto on 'could not access nsfw due to not logged in' status, although in further testing, this state seems to be rarer than previously/completely gone
added login scripts from the github for shimmie, sankaku, and e-hentai--thanks to Cuddlebear and any other users who helped put these together
added safebooru.donmai.us to danbooru login
improved the deviant art file page parser to get the 'full' embedded image link at higher preference than the standard embed, and only get the 'download' button if it looks like an image (hence, deviant art should stop getting 140MB brush zips!)
the manage logins panel now says when a login is expected to expire
the manage logins dialog now has a 'scrub invalidity' button to 'try again' a login that broke due to server error or similar
entering blank/invalid credentials is now permitted in the manage logins panel, and if entered on an 'active' domain, it will additionally deactivate it automatically
the manage logins panel is better at figuring out and updating validity after changes
the 'required cookies' in login scripts and steps now use string match names! hence, dynamically named cookies can now be checked! all existing checks are updated to fixed-string string matches
improved some cookie lookup code
improved some login manager script-updating code
deleted all the old legacy login code
misc login ui cleanup and fixes
.
other:
sped up tag searches in certain situations (usually huge inbox) by using a different optimisation
increased the repository mappings processing chunk size from 1k to 50k, which greatly increases processing in certain situations. let's see how it goes for different users--I may revisit the pipeline here to make it more flexible for faster and slower hard drives
many of the 'select from a list of texts' dialogs--such as when you select a gallery to download from--are now on the new panel system. the list will grow and shrink depending on its length and available screen real estate
.
misc:
extended my new dialog panel code so it can ask a question before an OK happens
fixed an issue with scanning through videos that have non-integer frame-counts due to previous misparsing
fixed a issue where file import objects that have been removed from the list but were still lingering on the list ui were not rendering their (invalid) index correctly
when export folders fail to do their work, the error is now presented in a better way and all export folders are paused
fixed an issue where the export files dialog could not boot if the most previous export phrase was invalid
the duplicate filter page now has a button to more easily edit the default merge options
increased the sibling/parent refresh delay for 1s to 8s
hydrus repository sync fails due to network login issues or manual network user cancel will now be caught properly and a reasonable delay added
additional errors on repository sync will cause a reasonable delay on future work but still elevate the error
converted import folder management ui to the new panel system
refactored import folder ui code to ClientGUIImport.py
converted export folder management ui to the new panel system
refactored export folder ui code to the new ClientGUIExport.py
refactored manual file export ui code to ClientGUIExport.py
deleted some very old imageboard dumping management code
deleted some very old contact management code
did a little prep work for some 'show background image behind thumbs', including the start of a bitmap manager. I'll give it another go later
next week
I have about eight jobs left on the login manager, which is mostly a manual 'do login now' button on manage logins and some help on how to use and make in the system. I feel good about it overall and am thankful it didn't explode completely. Beyond finishing this off, I plan to continue doing small work like ui improvement and cleanup until the 12th December, when I will take about four weeks off over the holiday to update to python 3. In the new year, I will begin work on what gets voted on in the poll.
