Long ago i made a post talking about Adamas as an OC and his possible historical and mythological references to justify him as "more than an cringy OC" (link in the comments) and some comments asked me to do one for one of my favorite characters in shuumatsu and also a character with no direct mythical counterpart: Zerofoku.

For many, Zerofuku is merely an OC that took away the possibility to see Bishamonten fight from the manga, for others is a compelling character but that doesn't seem to fit among the other characters: He is not a historical figure, he is not a mythological figure, so what is he doing here? the answer is, both in-story and thematically "He is the seven lucky gods all at once".

This make mean little to you all, but i'd argue that Buddha NEEDED to face the seven at once to make the fight have thematic relevance, only Bishamonten wouldn't have suficed, and, since the tournament are 1V1, a secret fusion of them seems like an appropiate solution.

"But AzraelSwift"-you may ask-"Why does Buddha need to face the seven lucky gods specifically? they come from a different mythology, they don't have anything to do with Buddha himself".

To make my case i'd like to introduce to you to the concept of Equanimity:

Equanimity is one of the Seven Factors of Awakening according to Buddist tradition. And is probably the factor where Zero struggles the most. Equanimity is in reference to the ability to remain composed and calm no matter the circumstances. To be swayed by pain is an error, giving oneself to anger is blinding, sorrounding yourself with pleasure is a distraction. Buddha himself falls into anger when Hajun awakens but only wins when he regains his calmed and relaxed demeanor... and during the whole fight against Zero he remains calm even when Zero's attack might hurt the audience... because fear does not move Buddha; in fact... nothing can move the Buddha except himself, not even the situation.

Zero represents the difficult process of Equanimity and also represents the direct embodiment of it: He is the seven lucky gods, "Zero Fuku" means "Zero Luck", he was fated to die horribly since before the fight started because he was randomly deemed appropiate to be the vessel of a Demon God by mere chance... Zero is a character whose whole life was determined by luck, and he thought that if he brought luck or was luckier he'd be happier. (Not a coincidence that he screams constantly that he is "miserable" when things don't go the way he wants, he sees luck and happiness as the same thing).... His mistake was that he allowed luck to control his life and determine how happy he was.

While Buddha finds Happiness on who he is regardless of luck, Zerofuku was looking for happiness on the outside forces that he had no control over, overly reliant on luck.

Round 6 can be described as the Buddha against the concept of Luck.

Not only faces the seven gods who mythologically BRING the luck, but he fights the must unluckiest god, and the luckiest Demon (Hajun was BORN with massive power and later was put in a perfect Vessel... in a more subtle way Hajun's whole life was also dictaminated by luck, only that in his case it ws GOOD luck... and he is an evil bastard nonetheless, because how lucky you are does not determine how good of a person you'd be.)

Buddha had to face luck on all fronts:

-He had help Zero face the pain he was feeling due to his bad luck on an emotional level.

-He had to face the pain that Hajun was able to cause due to his good luck on a phisical level.

Zerofuku was the opposite of what a Buddha should be; constantly swayed by luck, either by not having it or by hurting himself to give luck to others... but both are wrong, because good luck or bad luck will not make anybody wiser, nor happier, nor more fullfilled.

The Sixth round of the Ragnarok was a philosophical battle and Zerofuku, the seven gods of fortune combined to create the unluckiest god, was the perfect symbol for it.

"Can someone unlucky be happy?" Buddha's argument is "yes"... nothing and nobody can make you happy because happiness comes from within, and that means that your luck, no matter how good or how bad cannot give you fullfillment, because it is not dependant on the outside uncontrollable forces, each person is responsable for and capable of their own happiness, no matter how hard it is.

The moment Zero understood this he managed to let go of his resentment for the things he could not control, he managed to let go of the past pain, and focus on loving himself for who he is, not what luck has given him... and then died by another stroke of bad luck, all his battle seemed lost, Hajun using his good luck gave Zerofuku the worst fate and killed the kid... so was Buddha wrong? is Hajun the symbolism that you cannot beat luck?.... it seemed like it, untill Buddha manages to Volund with Zero, becuase they managed to connect throught Buddha's effort and love, not luck... and in the end is reveled that Zero's soul goes away happy and smiling with the seven lucky gods (symbolizing that he made peace with himself and all the aspect that made him who he is, even if they stemmed from painful moments) showing that, despite having the worst luck anyone could have, despite gaining NOTHING and losing EVERYTHING, Zero managed to be happy at the end because luck couldn't control how he felt in the end. In other words, because he was happy with himself no situation, no matter how awful, could hurt him anymore.

And Hajun? he died miserably in denial, becuase he allowed his good luck to control him the moment he stopped having it he did not know how to even react, so he died without a single flick of happiness in his heart, he was overly dependant on his luck, so luck had all the power to hurt him.

In conclusion since i don't want to make this any longer than it needs to (despite this idea opening itself up for an even longer essay) the next time you think of Zerofuku from a writting perspective, don't think of him as a weird OC with no reason to be here, think of him as a representation of luck and misery by mixing the gods that represent those aspects all at once and the fact that if you rely your happiness on your luck then you'll never be truly happy.

R6 is not a normal round for a lot of reasons, but thematically speaking is one of the most deep ones for the exploration of the concept of chance.

It's kinda fun also to point out that when Zerofuku was helping the humans giving everthing to them, the humans were still unhappy and unfullfilled... because no matter how much luck somebody gives you it doesn't mean they'll learn anything or become better people or be happier.

I do have one question however….

Why in the world does she have a sword between her titties?! I actually looked this up and watched the scene where she does this, and I’m just flabbergasted that she had it there!

-As a demi-goddess, you had the choice of fighting for either side, as both Zeus and Brunnhilde had approached you to fight, both knowing your skills as a fighter.

-You were initially going to refuse both of them, but after Zeus tried to command you, while Brunnhilde asked you, you chose to fight for humanity, not liking being commanded to do anything, something Zeus regrets as he lost a good fighter because he was so pushy with you!!

-Your opponent was strong, which excited you, as that meant you didn’t have to hold back!

-You swung your halberd with ease, and your opponent, Kand, a minor earth god, managed to snap the blade clean off, breaking your halberd.

-The other fighters and the audience in attendance called out in worry for you, as they didn’t want to lose someone like you, beautiful, powerful, and smart, you really were the whole package.

-Kand laughed at you, pointing a finger at you while he held his belly, “Can you still fight me Y/N?! Now that I’ve broken your only weapon!!”

-You glared and brought your hands up to your chest, “Who said that was my only weapon?”

-What could only be described as a black hole, opened at the top of your chest, on your cleavage, as you tilted your head back.

-A sword began to emerge from the black hole, glowing brightly as your hand lifted to the handle.

-Your eyes snapped open, glowing with power as you pulled out a beautiful katana from the magic black hole between your breasts, clutching it as the light faded.

-Kand was gawking, pointing rudely as his eyes were wide, “Where the heck did that come from?!”

-You charged at him, fast enough that it looked like you disappeared, before reappearing behind him as he fell, his head rolling off his shoulders.

-You pouted lightly, “It’s rude to ask a lady questions like that.”

-The crowds went wild, roaring loudly.

-Thor- Was stunned on how quickly the match ended, able to see that your katana was your true weapon, you were good with the halberd, but there was something natural about you holding a sword. He blinked once or twice, confused on how you were hiding that sword.

-Poseidon- Eyes widened only just slightly before relaxing as he watched you pull your sword out, before his amusement grew with how easily you took care of that weaker, cocky god. It made him curious about how strong you actually were.

-Shiva- Immediately turned to his wives, who were cheering for you, “Can you really hide stuff in your chest like that?” they just giggled, like they had a secret as Parvati spoke, “That’s a woman only secret~” but all three were impressed with your skills.

-Rudra- Eyes went wide when your halberd broke, but when the sword started to emerge from your chest, his jaw dropped, mouth hanging open before you pulled that out, completely stunned on where you got that sword!

-Buddha- Smirked, moving his lollipop to the other side of his mouth, finding it alluring and could instantly tell that your sword was your true weapon as you ended the fight so quickly after pulling it out. Then had to ruffle Zerofuku’s hair after the boy asked him if he had anything like that between his chest.

-Zerofuku- Was confused as to why you had a sword between your chest. He looked up at Buddha who had a big chest, wondering if he had anything between his own which got his hair ruffled by the taller god.

-Beelzebub- Was more intrigued with the magic that appeared there first, curious as to what it was. Froze, eyes wide when he saw you pulling the sword from your body, unable to look away.

-Loki- Looking disrespectfully, gawking with his tongue lolled out, full blush on his face as he could only gawk in awe. He wanted to get a closer look~

-Zeus- Cheering loudly, leading the charge of the cheers of the arena. He had never seen anything like it and he was so excited!!

-Ares- His whole head was bright red, staring shamelessly, blood dripping from his nose as he couldn’t believe what he just watched, gripping the arms of the chair tightly.

-Hermes- Amused by Ares’ reaction just a bit more, but was stunned with the magic that you used and even more so when he saw how big the actual sword was.

-Aphrodite- Giggled softly, hiding her mouth behind her hand, amused to see the reactions of others, but as a large chested woman herself, she knew well that any woman could hide things between or under her boobs, like knives~

-Hercules- Lifted a hand to his face to hide his blush, embarrassed to stare at you in such a way, but couldn’t take his eyes off of you, especially when you handled your opponent so easily.

-Kojiro- His face was bright red, watching you pull that from your chest, but he immediately focused on your form, his eyes widening as he saw you move, being one of a handful that was able to keep up with your moves.

-Jack- Was staring before he started, his cheeks warming as he turned, being a gentleman, not wanting to gawk at a young lady such as yourself in such a way. Was impressed with your skills with the sword however.

-Lu Bu- Could sense the power radiating from you, a feral grin appearing on his lips, wanting to fight you himself. However, he was one of the few that wasn’t bothered where you had your sword stashed.

-Chen Gong- Unlike his lord, as soon as you pulled that sword out he flew back, blood spurting from his nose, twitching on the ground. He didn’t even see the end of the fight.

-Raiden- A bright grin on his face as he watched you pull your weapon out, delight on his face as he found it attractive, “What a woman!” cheered loudly with the rest of the crowd.

-Qin Shi Huang- A bright smile on his face as he watched the scene, amazed by the magic that had appeared, wanting to know more about it, but very pleased watching the show.

-Adam- The time from when you pulled your sword out to being announced the winner was only about five seconds, but he was instantly glaring, exerting his pressure to those around him as he glared at them, ready to throw hands and lay waste to those who would say anything impure about his precious daughter!!

ADAM

🍃Adam's sixth father sense is always active when you are with him. He is always attentive whenever you need something, ALWAYS; and tries his best to make your life easier.

🍃Speaks very slowly when you are together, enunciating the words well and letting you see the way his mouth pronounces each single letter. He's sure you won't miss anything, so he's all over you if he sees you struggling.

🍃Adam doesn't hesitate to pick on anyone who makes fun of you or tries to pick a fight, using the excuse of deafness to insult you. He immediately takes your defense, but does not start a fight in front of you, in fact Abel has the task of covering your eyes.

Then he realizes his mistake, apologizing profusely and realizing that, of his speech, you understood only a few words.

🍀But for him it is not a problem! The God of Fortune starts over again, looking at you all the time and speaking loud and clear, enunciating the words! Don't worry, he would spend hours talking to you and never loses his temper.

🍀He always tries to save you from embarrassing situations, and if he sees that someone misunderstands your intentions or your behavior, Zerofuku explains your condition to them, hoping to do good.

BUDDHA

🍬You two become friends and you have no clue how it happened, it will always remain a mystery to you. The only thing you know is that, one day, he liked you, and now you have to get along with it. Expect lots of jokes from him: Buddha may move his mouth in front of you, not uttering a sound and inventing non-existent words, and then burst out laughing at your confused and complex face.

🍬Expect to get in some trouble with him. If he sees that someone wants to get your attention, but you ignore him because you just don't hear him, Buddha will start making up the weirdest stories to justify your lack of reaction. He would approach the person in question, saying that you are a princess and that you have no time to waste with them, or he makes up that you are his girlfriend and that they should let it go. But the Enlightened lets no one dare to get angry with you, Buddha becomes your personal protector.

🍬If he sees you're having trouble with too high a decibel sound, Buddha immediately whisks you away from that seat, plugging your ears and making sure you're okay. He gives you a candy and then pats your head, the important thing is that you are fine now.
