How to Record using the TuneIn App: A Tutorial by Me

1. Begin with your Do Not Disturb settings in Settings>Notifications>Do Not Disturb. It should look similar to this, turned on for the hours you sleep and only accepting call notifications from favorites or repeated calls.

2. Here's how to set up a show to record, using the Radio One Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw as an example. It is on from 6:30 to 10am in London. For me that is 12:30 to 4am in Missouri.

In the Tune In App, go to Settings>Advanced. All toggles should appear as below:

3. Now go find the BBC Radio 1 channel (or whatever channel you'd like to set to record). Underneath the heading on the screen there is an icon that looks like a bulleted list. Touch that icon.

Under Set alarm/record timer, you're going to make sure Enabled and Record are both toggled On. Your duration and repetition are set how you want them (for me 3 1/2 hours long every weekday) and the time at the bottom is the START record time. Mine is 12:30.

So now it's all set up to record, but TuneIn is dumb and makes you go through a whole set up every time you want the app to actually record something that it's seemingly scheduled to record. At some point before your scheduled recording is to start (for me, it's right before I go to sleep), here's what you need to do.

First, if this is a recording in the middle of the night and you need your alarm to go off in the morning, set it. It will not interfere with your recording unless it's set to go off DURING the recording.

Second, close all apps other than TuneIn. It should be the only thing open on your phone. (Ignore actual idiot Harry Styles below.)

PLUG IN YOUR PHONE and make sure WIRELESS IS ON AND ACTIVE. Otherwise, your phone will die about a third of the way through recording and you're cellular data plan will be eaten up after about five recordings. Open the app to the radio station you have a recording set for. You can hit stop so it doesn't play continuously. Make sure the volume on the station is turned all the way DOWN. This is the screen you want to leave open until recording starts. For me, it's open all night so I just turn my phone face down on my nightstand, plugged in, and it does it's thing.

Finally, in the morning you should have a recording to listen to. It doesn't take data and doesn't require wireless. It's a pre-recorded show to listen to just like if it were in your iTunes. Enjoy!
