BSC #3 The Truth About Stacey
The third installment of The Babysitters Club series follows Stacey McGill as she navigates drama both with her parents and with a rival babysitting business that opened up in Stoneybrook. At the end of the first BSC novel we learn that Stacey is living with type one diabetes. It seems that while the diagnosis is still fairly new, Stacey is adjusting. The Verdict
Tried This Coffee?
If you've been following my coffee reviews for a while here at The Coffee Concierge, you may have noticed that I don't review too many dark roast coffees.
Well, that changes today.
And today's review isn't just any dark roast coffee, today's review is a dark roast blend that claims to be the "World's Strongest Coffee."
This is Death Wish Coffee.
Quick Summary
Death Wish Coffee is a blend of arabica and robusta beans, primarily grown and processed in Peru and India.
It is a very dark roast, with roughly 2.5 times the amount of caffeine of a "typical cup of coffee".
Death Wish Coffee claims to be the "World's Strongest Coffee", but as we'll see later in the review, this claim is merely a marketing tagline that is unsubstantiated.
Who Death Wish Coffee is For
To the undiscerning coffee drinker who has built up a strong tolerance to caffeine, Death Wish might be worth giving a try.
Who Death Wish is NOT For
If you value taste over caffeine, there are far better coffee options out there.
Death Wish also isn't the coffee with the highest caffeine content on the market, so if that's most important to you, you might want to look elsewhere.

The World's Strongest Coffee?
Strong can be interpreted in different ways when it comes to evaluating coffee, but in this case, "strong" refers to the coffee's caffeine content.
Death Wish Coffee has twice the caffeine as your typical cup of coffee.
Of course, there is no such thing as a "typical" cup of coffee in my world, but I guess we can just assume that Death Wish is comparing their dark roast blend to one that uses arabica beans exclusively.
And that's what makes Death Wish more caffeinated...it isn't exclusively arabica beans.
Robusta vs. Arabica
If this talk about arabica beans has you confused, let me explain...
Of the hundreds of coffee species in the world, there are two main coffee species that make up the majority of what is sold and consumed.
These two coffee species are:
Coffea Arabica and Coffea Canephora (AKA Coffea Robusta).
Arabica beans are generally considered to be superior to Robusta from a taste perspective, which is largely attributed to the more limited caffeine content (caffeine is bitter).
Robusta beans have twice the caffeine content that arabica beans have.
Arabica beans also have a higher lipid and sugar content (60%), which contributes to perceived acidity and natural sweetness.
So what's the secret to Death Wish Coffee's higher caffeine content?
Simple.
The Death Wish coffee blend includes Robusta and Arabica beans. The extra caffeine is brought out by the Robusta beans.
How Much Caffeine is in Death Wish Coffee?
Death Wish Coffee claims to be 2.5 times as strong as your "typical" cup of coffee.
I suppose what they mean by "typical" is a 100% arabica coffee.
If you're looking for the specifics, Death Wish has 728mg of caffeine per 12 ounce cup of coffee, according to Caffeine Informer.
This comes out to roughly 60mg of caffeine per fluid ounce.
A typical cup of coffee is measured at 5-6 ounces, which means you are getting a whopping 300mg of caffeine per cup of coffee.
That's like drinking three 5-Hour Energy drinks.
But is Death Wish Really The World's Strongest Coffee?
The short answer is no.
Biohazard Coffee has an even higher caffeine content than Death Wish, coming in at an insane 928mg of caffeine per 12 ounce cup of coffee, according to Caffeine Informer.
And I imagine that there are other coffee brands that have come along since and exceeded these excessive caffeine levels.
One can only wonder what the tipping point is here...

I frequently brewed with the Chemex and Kalita Wave to filter out the inevitable bitter compounds I expected from these beans.

I think it worked, as I rarely made a cup of coffee that was undrinkable.

To be honest, I was surprised.

I won't break down the different methods here because I didn't really have a particular preference.

I wouldn't recommend it for French Press though, as there is simply way too much oil and sediment that won't get filtered out.
I think Death Wish Coffee brews nicely with a Chemex or Kalita Wave, given the thick paper filters used with both coffee makers.
Of course, a simple automatic drip coffee maker will do just fine as well. Just make sure to grind a bit more on the coarse side.

Chemex

American Press

Behmor Connected

Minos Moka Pot

Brewista Variable Temperature Kettle

Breville Smart Grinder Pro

Kalita Wave

American Weigh Scales LB-3000
Ratings
If you’re new here, you can check out how I rate whole bean coffee here.
Acidity
Virtually none. This was a coffee that had more nutty notes than acidic ones.
Aftertaste
Nothing really wrong with the aftertaste, but nothing special about it either. A bit dry, but nothing I can complain about.
Aroma
You'll either love the aroma or hate it. I personally didn't think it smelled particularly delicious. Movie theater popcorn and rubber isn't really a good combo if you ask me.

The aroma is crazy strong though. You'll easily smell this coffee through the box that it arrives in.
Balance
Surprisingly smooth and neutral. Given the lack of acidity, the balance shifts towards the darker, nuttier notes.
Body
Not as much body as I'd expect given how oily the beans are. Of course, the brew methods I used had a lot to do with this. The slight dryness in the aftertaste retracts from the overall score here, but not by much.
Complexity
You don't buy this coffee for its complexity, you buy it for its caffeinated kick. If somebody tells you this tastes like a chocolate covered cherry, they either have an amazing palate, or they're lying to you (and themselves).
Flavor
Nothing really notable about the taste, but this was a pretty neutral and drinkable coffee.
Forgiveness
This was a very consistent coffee across brew methods for me. I also didn't have any bad brews. Maybe I was just able to dial it in more quickly?
Sweetness
Nothing sweet about it. Not too bitter though (I expected to have to add cream and sugar).
Versatility
I didn’t experiment with enough brew methods to really rate this category.
The Verdict
If you are not getting the caffeine pick-me-up you are seeking in the coffee you already drink, then Death Wish Coffee is definitely worth a try.

Of course, you could always drink more of what you're already drinking to match the effect. After all, this stuff is not the cheapest coffee out there.

There's also coffee that is even stronger than Death Wish (in terms of caffeine) if you're crazy enough to try it. For that, my recommendation would be Biohazard Coffee.

If you're more concerned with the way your coffee tastes than how much caffeine it comes packed with, I'd look elsewhere.

In my opinion, Death Wish Coffee doesn't taste bad, but it doesn't taste good either.
Tried This Coffee?
If you've tried this coffee, let us know what you thought by leaving a review in the comments section below.

If you have questions, I'm also happy to try and answer them. It's already an insane amount of caffeine.

Biohazard Coffee also had their coffee lab-tested in 2017 to claim their self-proclaimed title of "World's Strongest Coffee." There is no information on the website about what other coffees they were tested against, but I imagine Death Wish was one of them.
How Does Biohazard Coffee Taste?
Though Robusta beans have a bad wrap in the world of coffee, I found that Biohazard tasted pretty good.

Granted, it is also a pre-ground dark roast coffee, which is pretty much the opposite of the stuff I drink on a regular basis. But despite this, I didn't feel the need to add any milk or sugar to mask bad flavors.

It definitely tasted similar to Death Wish, with those prominent popcorn flavor notes.

But if my memory serves me correctly, Death Wish had a more intense body and some additional bitterness. By contrast, Biohazard tasted "cleaner", less bitter, and less gritty.

Still, it's not a coffee I would seek out specifically for great taste.
Summary
If you're looking for a coffee with the highest possible caffeine content without compromising too much flavor, then I'd recommend Biohazard Coffee.

The flavor is consistent, albeit not very complex. I do think the coffee has changed my view of Robusta beans to some extent. At times, I was surprised that there was no arabica present in the blend.

I also liked the flavor more than Death Wish.

Granted, I bought Death Wish in its whole bean form, while I received Biohazard in its pre-ground form, so it wasn't the fairest comparison. But I could tell that Biohazard had significantly less oil and sediment, whether or not that had anything to do with its pre-ground state is beyond me.

You can buy Biohazard Coffee from Amazon at the link below.

Death Wish vs. The Competition

Equipment Used
Given how dark and oily these beans were, I had a feeling that I would have to brew with a coarse grind, low temperature, and thick paper filters.

And for the most part, this is exactly what I did.

I never brewed with water that was hotter than 195˚F.

It is also available on Biohazard Coffee's website here.
@type":"Person
{"@type":"AggregateRating

Given how dark and oily these beans were, I had a feeling that I would have to brew with a coarse grind, low temperature, and thick paper filters.
And for the most part, this is exactly what I did.
I never brewed with water that was hotter than 195˚F.

Balance

First Taste: Starbucks New Spiced Sweet Cream cold brew
First Taste: Starbucks New Spiced Sweet Cream cold brew
Everyone in my family knows that I live for good coffee, chocolate, and traveling. In fact I often travel with food and coffee in mind for my destination. I plot out where I am getting breakfast, coffee, lunch, coffee, and dinner. So whenever my favorite coffeehouse has a new flavor, I like to be right there to give it a try. This week I am trying the new Spiced Sweet Cream cold brew at…

American Sniper review/addressing criticisms
I would love to address some of the complaints about American Sniper, since I just saw it last night. I wasn’t one of those people leaving the movie feeling an overwhelming sense of pride in America, but I did think it was a great movie and the fact that it has been eliciting so many different emotions is just a testament to that.
I’ll begin by addressing the “glorification of a man that killed 160 people”. I’d like to know where the “glorification” part comes from because I didn’t get that at all. I did however get that Chris Kyle wasn’t perfect and probably had more faults than the movie lead the viewer to believe. But, what movie doesn’t do that? In the end, Chris was still human, a man that wanted to do what he thought was right. Whether you agree with that or not is your own opinion and you have the right to that opinion.
Next, I want to quickly address the way Muslims were treated in the movie. At first a lot of the language used, like “savages” really bothered me, but it was there for good reason. Think about what Chris saw, even what he saw Radical Islamists doing to other Muslims. What he saw, he interpreted as pure evil. Do you think that he could’ve killed those people if he didn’t demonize them in his mind somehow? Of course I don’t agree with the demonization of Muslims, but it’s not an unreasonable part of the movie.
Lastly, I want to address my own opinion and its not really a complaint about the movie, just my own feelings. I think a lot of people left the movie feeling a great sense of patriotism, which I didn’t have a much. I mean, of course…for me at least, any time I see the American flag, I feel pride in my country and where I was born and raised, however, the concept of the movie didn’t spark that kind of patriotism. I’ve been contemplating war a lot recently and in the end, I just felt a completely and utter sense of sadness and depression. It makes me a little sad that people felt so much pride in the movie when I felt it was a great display of the horror of the world and I could go on and on about my feelings but I’ll just stop here for now…mostly because what I feel right now is hard to explain and, also it wasn’t the main point of this post. The main point was ultimately to say that just because American Sniper sparked different emotions for different people, doesn’t mean it was a horrible movie. In fact, it was an amazing and powerful movie and if people would open their minds a little bit, they could see that it deserves every praise it’s getting.
Thank you for reading my opinion:)
