Hello! I was wondering if you could give me some advice on enclosure size. I know you mostly specialize in pythons, but I was wondering if you knew whether or not a forty gallon tank would be big enough for a Northern Redbelly? Im sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, there’s just not much information on them on google and your the first blog I found that I knew was being run by someone actually knowledgeable and caring lol also I am wanting to make it a bioactive enclosure if that makes any difference
Hi there! From what I'm seeing, redbelly's are a fairly small snake, only around 10 inches long as adults, so a 40 gallon should be fine :)
You should know though, these are a slug eating species. So if you don't have constant access to slugs, you sadly won't be able to properly feed them. I also am unaware of any breeders for this species so any redbelly you get will likely be wild caught. It's likely you already have, but be sure to research the species as much as possible! You can also join the facebook group Diminutive Colubrids, that is likely the best place to get info on these guys as that entire group specializes in colubrids smaller than 2 feet long.
I'd recommend starting your own breeding group of slugs, that way you always know you'll have access to them :)
Good luck! :)

[CM] Reptiles
The bird wave has passed, and in its wake we’ve got reptiles! Below are translations for three snakes and two turtles.
Ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus) - Owosis (owo*, sis*)
Tiny, harmless, and nocturnal. Known for their curious defensive strategy of curling up their tail to display the red-and-orange underbelly.
Smooth green snake (Opheodrys vernalis) - Loloris (lolol*, sis*)
Solid green snake that flees when threatened. Occasionally taken as prey.
Redbelly snake (Storeria occipitomacula) - Sirrlur (rarrlur*, sis*)
Small and very similar to ring-necked snakes. Rarely bite when threatened - instead, they curl their lips!
Estern garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) - Sipsis (sip*, sis*)
The largest snake on ClayClan territory, often encountered near water. Not dangerous but may cause a painful bite.
Snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) - Gnamss (gnam*)
Cat-sized and very, very threatening, a bite from a snapping turtle can cause devastating damage. Thankfully, they only bite when threatened - an important part of apprentice training is learning how to spot and avoid snappers.
Painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) - Solysh (solyss*, eksh*)
Colorful turtle with a smooth shell. Generally not hunted, but playful cats may practice stalking them for fun. Their shells can be used as bowls if properly cleaned.

September 20-30th, 2021 - New Hampshire
Stayed at some rotting wooden cabins. Ended up sleeping in the grass outside lol. Hundred ten acres on top of a mountain webbed with trails. Pond with lots of bullfrogs. Bees in the rocks tho. Also in the rocks, the redbelly snake I photographed above. 10/10 would go again.

Since Red has been trying to hibernate we've been leaving him be except to moisten his tank and to make sure he gets a drink of water.

I was going to post a meta post on how if snake!crowley is based off a red-bellied black snake (which I’m like 95% sure off), it’s perfect. Then I fell down a rabbit role of reverse aus and realised red-bellied black snake is just as perfect for Aziraphale.
Because the thing about redbellies is that they are incredibly venomous but would really rather not. Like they honestly just want to get on with their life. Even though they can mess you up, they don’t want too. They honestly will do everything in their power not to bite something that isn’t food. If they can find a way to avoid confrontation with non-prey, they will. If they can’t, they will give ample (I mean multiple mock strikes) warning to tell you to back off.
Red-bellied black snakes are soft by choice.
So is Aziraphale. I may do a post on how Aziraphale is soft by choice later.
I’m sure there are other reptilian and amphibian soft by choice animals but honestly, I know more about redbellies since I see them more often.
Nothing to do with Good Omens: Redbellies produce their young alive. I just need more people to know that.
Also don’t mess with red-bellied black snakes or any wild animals, while most will normally want to leave you alone, they will attack if they feel threatened enough. And also different languages, so you may unwittingly threaten an animal and now no one is happy.

Redbelly Black Snake at archery.
Liam spotted it less than 2ft from us. This one is a baby, adults grow up to 2 metres.
There is a freshly dug garbage dumo jext to the archery range, perfect breeding ground for rats which will grow the snake population.
One of the most venomous snakes in Australia. They eat the eggs of the more dangerous Brown Snake, so if anything its good to see him around. That said, brown snakes can be around. Yikes.
