Need more dreadnougts around here, it's been a hot minute Some sketches from a bit ago, further attempts at trying to keep it loose but still be somewhat structural/technical
#Wh40k#dreadnought#ironclad#castaferrum#contemptor#redemptor#mecha#(sort of lmaoooo)#the inky style lends itself well to that but it's the eternal struggle for an efficient approach pff#short attention span always at odds with the detail hyperfixated side of the brain#There is a Two Wolves joke in there somewhere#anyway dreadnoughts make me smile I fucken love them#Jet art

Hail ye! A dead knight of dead Caliban In sleepless dream strides forth Her guns ever-telling, ever-ending A wake in blood and bone, iron-trodden
Judith, grave-borne, tomb-shielded Dead, killing, unforgiven
Turns out there's more than one way to make lady space marines!
I still haven't found a way to photograph very big miniatures (oxymoron?) like this in a way that I'm totally happy with, but hopefully you get the idea. I am very happy with the model itself!
The early medieval-style banner is a particular milestone for me, being the first (and I guess, 2nd, because it's double-sided) time I've managed to paint a decent-looking face on a 2d surface! I took the opportunity to make the dreadnought pilot female because I've sort of committed to the idea of having all my Dark Angels wear helmets. Helmetless heads on marines are often a good way to express your chapter's identity, but I think an important aspect of the Dark Angels (at least post-heresy) is that their identity is on a need-to-know basis. Therefore, helmets for everybody! It made a lot of sense to me though that this walking, fighting reliquary should carry some sort of tribute to its pilot, so Judith gets a portrait.
PS before anybody gets confused, her skin is green mainly because I didn't want to upset my nice disciplined colour palette, but I also like the idea of green skin being associated with death & rebirth as in the case of the Egyptian Osiris.
That's enough words for today! Hope you all are doing well and that your skin is a regular human colour.

Space Marines Redemptor Dreadnought, Blood Ravens Chapter 5th Company 31-Oct-2024
20 years of being around this hobby, and up until now I've never put hands on a Dreadnought. Glad I've changed that now!
Honoured Brother Kanos here was good fun, especially the weathering. It's quite easy to go too far cuz you're enjoying yourself but I think I got enough on there.

The Small Fandoms
Can we just get some love for the small fandoms? The tiny ones? The barely there ones, with people who've read the books, but can't find anyone else who has, even though there are people out there?
Ponniyan Selvan, The Dandelion Dynasty, The Inheritances Games, Jeeves, Snow Like Ashes, Raybearer, Enola Holmes, Sheena Meyer (LITERALLY NONEXISTENT) Murder Most Unladylike and others (add them in the comments)

You Have My Attention: Raybearer Duology First Lines

I cannot say enough good things about Jordan Ifueko's debut duology. I loved these books from first read, and they live rent-free in my head. So let's see how Ifueko catches her readers.
I shouldn't have been surprised to learn that fairies exist.
When elephants passed by in a lumbering sea beneath my window, flecks of light whispered in the dust, dancing above rows of tusks and leather. I leaned precariously over the sill, hoping to catch a fleck before a servant wrestled me inside.
-- Raybearer
My name was Tarisai Kunelo, and no one I loved would ever die again.
I stole down the hallway, my sandals slapping the words into music--never again, never again. I would play this song until my soles were thin. Griots, the scared storytellers of our empire, shaped the histories we believed with their music.
I, too, would sing this story until the world believed it.

At the beginning of the year I made it a point to dedicate 2024 to reading & supporting more black writers. And I have to say it has been amazing! I discovered some wonderful stories. So with 2024 quickly wrapping up I thought I'd share some of my favorite reads of the year.
1. Jordan Ifueko's Raybearer world:
Raybearer
Tarisai, a young girl with the unique ability to glimpse the stories of others' lives through touch, grows up under the shadow of a magical wish imposed by her distant, absent mother. While she unravels the secrets of others, her own story remains a mystery yet to unfold.
Redemptor
For the first time in history, an Empress Redemptor rules from Aritsar’s throne. To quell the vengeful spirits of the dead, Tarisai must assemble her own council, embracing her full power as a Raybearer. Her ultimate test lies ahead: a journey into the Underworld, a selfless sacrifice to prevent future atrocities.
The Maid and The Crocodile
In the magic-infused capital of Oluwan, Small Sade is desperate for work—ideally as a maid for someone willing to overlook her unusual appearance and unlucky foot. However, her plans take an unexpected turn when she accidentally binds herself to the Crocodile, a formidable god infamous for devouring beautiful girls.

2. Ladarrion Williams / Blood at the Root
Debut novel
"A teenager on the run from his past finds the family he never knew existed and the community he never knew he needed at an HBCU for the young, Black, and magical."
Book 2 titled Bones at the Crossroads will be released July 2025

3. Alyssa Cole thrillers:
When No One Is Watching
"Sydney Green is Brooklyn born and raised, but her beloved neighborhood seems to change every time she blinks. Condos are sprouting like weeds, FOR SALE signs are popping up overnight, and the neighbors she's known all her life are disappearing. To hold onto her community's past and present, Sydney channels her frustration into a walking tour and finds an unlikely and unwanted assistant in one of the new arrivals to the block--her neighbor Theo."
One Of Us Knows
"The new caretaker of a historic estate finds herself trapped on an island with a murderer—and the ghosts of her past."

4. Akwaeke Emezi's Pet series:
Pet
Pet tells the story of Jam, a transgender teenager living in a society where adults have convinced themselves that monsters no longer exist.
Bitter
"A prequel to Emezi's Pet, Bitter tells the story of a Black teenage girl living in a city troubled by constant protests and violence."

5. Justina Ireland / Rust in the Root
"It is 1937, and Laura Ann Langston lives in an America divided—between those who work the mystical arts and those who do not. Ever since the Great Rust, a catastrophic event that blighted the arcane force called the Dynamism and threw America into disarray, the country has been rebuilding for a better future. And everyone knows the future is industry and technology—otherwise known as Mechomancy—not the traditional mystical arts. Laura disagrees..."
Another great read by Justina not read this year but too good not to mention is her Dread Nation series:
Dread Nation
Deathless Divide

6. Morgan Rogers / Honey Girl
Debut novel
A story of self-discovery, prioritizing mental health and recognizing the beauty of chosen family.

7. Tiffany D Jackson / The Weight of Blood
"Drawing inspiration from Stephen King’s Carrie, the novel features a biracial teenage girl with magical powers whose years of abuse from her father and bullying from her peers lead to disastrous consequences."
If Tiffany D. Jackson wrote it I'm going to read it , her books do not disappoint:
Allegedly
Monday's Not Coming
Let Me Hear A Rhyme
Grown
White Smoke
Blackout
Whiteout

8. Erin E. Adams / The Jackal
Debut novel
"A young Black girl vanishes in the woods on the outskirts of her predominantly white Rust Belt town. She isn’t the first to disappear—and she might not be the last"

9. S. A. Cosby / Razorblade Tears
"Ike Randolph and Buddy Lee are aging ex-cons living in rural Virginia. When their sons, a black and white couple with a baby daughter are brutally murdered, the two men team up and embark on a quest for revenge. As they try and track down their sons' killers, they also confront their own prejudices toward their sons and each other."
Other must reads by S. A. Cosby (read last year) :
All The Sinners Bleed
My Darkest Prayer

10. Tracy Deonn's Legendborn cycle:
Legendborn
"After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus. A flying demon feeding on human energies & a secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down."
Bloodmarked
"It is the second book in The Legendborn Cycle series, and follows Bree as she discovers her ancestral power and becomes a Medium, Bloodcrafter, and Scion. Bree and her friends must go on the run to rescue Nick, the Legendborn boy she fell in love with."
Oathbound the 3rd book in the cycle will be released in March 2025

Complete! The flags didn’t work as I envisioned but still look ok. I have now completed all Imperium magazine ultramarines, and the last of my collection. Feels good to have a fully painted army, even if not Competitive - just all the things i like/came in subscription.

sometimes I think that pain and misery is all we have left in this world. we are on the brink of a precipice, wars, droughts, climate change, economic collapse, injustices all around and it really makes me wonder why I'm doing anything anyway because we are all doomed. but then I wake up each day, and there is a tree in front of my house with new flower buds, my mum smiles when she sees me and I saw a wide eyed newborn baby girl two days ago. people will be dancing in the streets soon and nights will be filled with laughter. the sand and the sea are waiting for me, and there is music and art and books that I haven't gotten my hands on yet. we may be going toward a terrible future, but we may still be in time to change it, because life is worth living no matter what comes next.
“I want to live, because life is... life is worth it. Because as long as we can imagine a better world, we should stick around to see it. Even if it doesn't exist yet. Even if we have to build it from scratch, brick by muddy brick.”

Just finished rereading Chapter 6 of Jordan Ifueko's Redemptor, and I had somehow FORGOTTEN that Dayo is so hilariously bad at surprises that he literally gifts Tar an albino elephant calf that is an absolute goddamn terror.
I love it. I wouldn't change a thing.
