100 followers celebration!
Tumblr media
take a moment and appreciate what i’ve put together for y’all...
Thrilled to have made it to 100!! While there’s still a ~select collection~ of you, I thought it would be fun to do horny art
You might be wondering, how can I see my blorbo like this? Ask and you shall receive my friends
Send me a name & number and I’m going to draw an undetermined number of people (probably 2-5) over the next few weeks in these sexy harnesses. These are not requests per se but suggestions so I don’t expect to do them all!
Rules:
You must be following me
I will not indulge requests on anon- this is to make sure all participants are 18+ (also please for the love of diavolo have your age in bio or i will block you)
You can request via ask, DM, comment on this post, reblog/tags, wherever honestly lol
While the images are all men, you can also send female characters! I’ll alter the harness/ropes if it would not make sense for a woman’s body (thinking about #8 draped over some tits so respectfully...)
side note: if you have a female body harness in mind feel free to send that instead keeping in the BDSM/ropes theme
side side note: i’m open to depicting characters with body parts alternative to canon
I will likely add dick, feel free to send pics if you have something in mind (don’t make me regret this lmao) (it can be dildos and in fact this is what i expect)
I am a creature that works on inspiration- if you want me to do your request, tailor it to me
I should not have to say this but please don’t send characters that are canonically minors. I will not age up. I’ll block you if you do this (if the age is ambiguous feel free to check with me)
The art will not be tagged as such but housekeeping for this event will be tagged #gray100 (sorry you are forced to look at the art lol)
Characters/fandoms I am open to under the cut~
Obey me
really anyone except for Luke
lmk if you want demon form/bunny or cat ears ;)
throwing my oc Diaval out there just in case anyone’s interested lol (yes this is basically a guarantee i’ll draw it tho lol)
Genshin
Any of the adult characters are fair game but I’ll list some favorites
boys: Childe, Dottore, Pantalone, Itto, Diluc, Kaeya, Dain, Thoma, Xiao, Zhongli
girls: Yelan, Beidou, Raiden Shogun, Yae Miko, Rosaria
The Witcher (show or game)

Codywan Sleep Bingo 2023 Rules
Hello and welcome to the first Codywan Sleep Bingo event! It’s us, your kiss and kink bingo mods, bringing you an event designed for all of us who just want to be hibernating right now in a warm, comfy bed. Keep reading if you're interested and want to learn more about the (very few) rules.
How to Play
So, how does one participate in Codywan Sleep Bingo 2023? It’s so easy! Just fill out this form, then wait for us to email you your bingo card. The card will look like this, but will be procedurally generated so that you have different prompts in a different order from everyone else:
Tumblr media
Then you get down to writing, drawing, or otherwise creating something for the prompts you select! That’s it!
Fill Requirements
Well, that’s not quite it. We do have some requirements on what you can submit to fill a square on your bingo card. Each fill must include one of the following options:
Fic: A minimum of 100 words per fill
Art: One piece of art (digital, traditional, whatever floats your boat)
Playlist: One song that explicitly meets the requirements of the prompt (bonus if you make the mods laugh)
Other: Have a different idea? Reach out to the mods via an ask! Let’s chat. We want this to be available to all creators!
Now, and this is very important, we come to the PRIMARY RULE for the Codywan Sleep Bingo 2023 Challenge. And that rule is: you MUST include one of the prompts on your bingo card. And it must be CLEARLY PRESENT. No throw away lines, no blink-and-you’ll-miss-it references….
Basically, if your mod team has to confer to see if we can MAYBE accept the piece as a prompt fill, the answer is: we can’t. Please, give us sleep! Either Obi-Wan or Cody (OR BOTH) of them SHOULD be sleeping at some point in each fill.
Note that to complete a bingo, you must complete a row of five prompts--meaning, you must have a piece that includes one of the prompts in the squares on your bingo card, and you must in this way fill five squares in a row. You can do a horizontal row! A vertical row! A diagonal! Any method you’d use to fill a traditional bingo card works!
Prompt Adjustments
We know not all the prompts may work for everyone. If you have a prompt that’s inconveniently located to complete your bingo dream, you may swap it with another. We allow one (1) adjustment per bingo card.
Posting Dates
Once you get your card, you can work on it at your own pace through March 10th. During this time, post your fills to the AO3 collection and reblog them to the tumblr, and we’ll review to make certain you have included a Codywan sleeping prompt from your bingo card and accept your submission, sharing the love for your creations!
Note that, as both mods work full time, we will not be accepting items to the collection after March 10th! (Hopefully, we’ll be sleeping!)
Choose the Kind of Card You Want
This event has prompts laid out a bit differently. We made our list and discovered we had a handful of spicy prompts, but the vast majority are spice-neutral. SO. When you request a card, you can request a Spice Neutral Card OR a card from the Spice Inclusive list.
Note that getting a Spice Inclusive card does not GUARANTEE a spicy prompt. There are only two of them in total. You might not get one on your card; a Spice Inclusive card merely opens you up to the potential of getting these prompts.
Regardless of the type of card you get, please tag appropriately. You can select whatever rating you want, as long as it fulfills the requirements of the bingo. Please use archive warning tags, as well, if necessary.
Posting Rules
So, let’s say that you’ve written your first fill. You’ve gone over it, it applies to the prompt you are filling, it’s Codywan…. You’re ready to post!
You can post on AO3 (into the collection), tumblr, or any other location that your mods can view! When you post, please shout at us (@codywansleepbingo) in the body of the tumblr post AND tag us (codywansleepbingo2023) in the tags.
This helps us find your post! Also, please include a screenshot of your bingo card with the fill circled, so we know which square you’re filling.
Throw on any appropriate tags and you’re good to go! Please place any explicit material under a cut to keep the event friendly to everyone!
Your Next Steps
Congratulations, you’ve gotten to the bottom of our rules! That’s it! If you’re ready to create some sleepy, sleepy content, we’re ready to make that happen! Click here to request your sleep bingo card today! (Please check your spam filter if you do not receive your card).
ETA: @swfandomevents, for awareness :DDD

How I Letterboxd #13: Erika Amaral.
Film sociologist Erika Amaral on the blossoming of Brazil’s women filmmakers, the joys of queuing for the movies, the on-fire Brazilian Letterboxd community, and the sentimental attachment of her entire nation to A Dog’s Will.
“It is hard to produce art without institutional support and it is very complicated to produce art during this tragic pandemic.” —Erika Amaral
In the wide world outside of English-language Letterboxd, Brazil occupies a particularly fervent corner. Sāo Paulo-based feminist film theorist Erika Amaral has connected with many other local film lovers through her Letterboxd profile, and for anyone with an interest in Cinema Brasileiro, her lists are an excelente place to start.
From her personal introduction to Brazilian film history, to her own attempts to fill gaps in her Latin American cinematic knowledge, Erika’s well-curated selections are a handy primer on the cinema of the fifth-largest country in the world, and its neighbors. These lists sit alongside her finely judged academic deep-dives into filmmakers such as Luis Buñuel, Glauber Rocha and Sarah Bernhardt.
Endlessly fascinated by how “the history of cinema is all intertwined”, Erika has also written on Jia Zhangke for Rosebud Club, is an Ana Carolina stan, enjoys collecting films directed by women featuring mirrors and women, and, like all of us, watched many remarkable movies during quarantine.
Tumblr media
Suzana Amaral (left, rear) with cast and crew on the set of her film ‘A Hora da Estrela’ (Hour of the Star, 1985).
Olá, Erika. Please give our readers a brief introduction to your brilliant Introduction to Brazilian Film History list. I’m so happy to see this list getting popular! I’m a sociologist interested in film and gender studies. It’s been four years since I started studying Brazilian film history but my passion for film is much older. I tried to combine those two aspects in this list; films that are meaningful to me, historically relevant films, and historically relevant films erased from film-history books, for instance, those directed by women. The main purpose of my list is to highlight Brazilian women filmmakers’ fundamental contributions to Brazilian cinema.
I listed some absolute classics such as Hour of the Star by the late director Suzana Amaral, and other obscure gems such as The Interview, by Helena Solberg, which is a short feature released in 1966 alongside the development of Cinema Novo. Solberg’s work was hidden for decades. No-one knew about it. In Brazil, especially in the field of film studies and feminist theories, we are experiencing the blossoming of public debates, books being released, and film festivals that look specifically into films such as Solbergs’s and [those of] many other women directors, including Adélia Sampaio, the first Black female director to release a feature film in Brazil in 1984, Amor Maldito. We need these debates on Letterboxd as well, so I wrote this list in English.
As a representative of the passionate Brazilian community on Letterboxd, can you provide some insight into the site’s popularity where you live, especially for those of us who have not learned Brazilian Portuguese? I feel at home using Letterboxd. Everywhere I see Brazilian members posting reviews in both Portuguese and English. It’s a passionate community. It’s directly related to Twitter where Brazilian cinephiles are so active and productive, always sharing film memes (and even Letterboxd memes). Many content creators are using both Letterboxd and Twitter to showcase their podcasts, classes and film clubs. I once started a talk at a university for film students mentioning that my Masters research project came into life when I watched Amélia, showing my mind-blown Letterboxd review in the presentation. I follow many of those students now and it is so good to be connected. Brazilian Film Twitter and [the] Brazilian Letterboxd community are on fire!

Alexandre Rodrigues as Buscapé in ‘City of God’ (2002), directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund.
When uninitiated cinephiles think about Brazilian cinema, City of God is most likely top of the list. It’s the only Brazilian film to be nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards (despite co-director Kátia Lund being shut out!) and it’s the only Brazilian film in IMDb’s Top 250. After nearly 20 years, is it fair for City of God to represent Brazil? Of course, it is fair for City of God to represent Brazil! The only problem is if we think all Brazilian cinema is exclusively City of God. The film is entertaining, well-directed, has a great cast, but it has some flaws—for example, the aestheticization of violence and misery in Brazil, which scholar Ivana Bentes calls the “cosmetics of hunger”. Even so, it is a great film and it captivated Brazilian and international audiences. We shouldn’t limit any country to only one or two films.
If you enjoy City of God, check my list for Brazilian films directed by women in this period, which we call “Cinema da Retomada”—the renaissance of Brazilian cinema after the economic problems [that] hampered the film industry in the 1990s.
Tumblr media
Selton Mello and Matheus Nachtergaele in beloved Brazilian comedy ‘O Auto da Compadecida’ (A Dog’s Will, 2000).
Several Brazilian films have stunningly high ratings on Letterboxd, giving them a place on many of our official lists. This includes A Dog’s Will, which is in the top ten of our all-time Top 250. On Letterboxd, A Dog’s Will reviews are cleanly divided into two camps: Brazilians (who absolutely love it) and everyone else (who fail to understand its popularity). What drives this home-team spirit? People truly love A Dog’s Will! It’s funny, has a fantastic rhythm, and it references many aspects of Brazilian culture, especially regarding north-eastern Brazilian culture. It was shown both as a film and as a miniseries infinite times on the largest and most popular television channel in Brazil. I can’t help mentioning that A Dog’s Will portrays Jesus Christ as a black man and Fernanda Montenegro as Brazil’s patron saint, Nossa Senhora Aparecida. It’s a brilliant moment for Matheus Nachtergaele, one of the greatest Brazilian actors ever.
Can you offer us a ‘Gringo’s Guide to A Dog’s Will’? I love the idea of a ‘Gringo’s Guide to A Dog’s Will’! You need to have good subtitles. The beauty of A Dog’s Will is that it is regional but it was made to be understandable to all of Brazil. You are going to need subtitles that [cover] the expressions, slang and proverbs—not mere translations. I would recommend watching some other films from north-eastern Brazil; Land of São Saruê, Love for Sale and Ó Paí Ó: Look at This. This can help you understand other social and cultural dimensions of Brazil beyond, for instance, City of God. A Dog’s Will is a movie that we would watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon with the family, so we have a strong sentimental attachment to it.
Tumblr media
Leonardo Villar bears the weight of a cross in ‘The Given Word’ (1964).
Religion plays an important role in Brazilian cinema—for example, one of the few Brazilian films to win the Palme d’Or is the masterful The Given Word. Is this connection a part of what makes Brazilian cinema so potent for the local community? Religious symbolism and religious beliefs are extremely significant in Brazilian cinema. Its presence in cinema seems to address our daily challenges, rituals, history, but not always apologetically—as you can see in the despair of Zé do Burro in The Given Word. Religion does not seem to help him. There’s nowhere to run. The spiritual belief, as well as the cross itself, is a weight on his shoulders.
So you see, religion in Brazilian cinema is so potent because we can think beyond it, we can understand how people relate to their beliefs and how sometimes religion can fail a person. That’s what happens when a priest falls in love with a local girl (The Priest and the Girl), when a curse falls upon a man who turns against his people (The Turning Wind), when we teach fear and sin to young girls (Heart and Guts), when religion becomes a determining way of life that does not pay back efforts (Divine Love), when we accept the possibility of going against religious institutions (José Mojica Marin’s, AKA Coffin Joe, films).
We have all these movies fascinated by religion and how it creates meaning in our society. This is just from Christianity, because if we think of African and Indigenous heritage, we have another whole dimension of films to reflect upon, such as Noirblue and the documentary Ex-Pajé.
We have some Brazilian films in our Official Top 100 by Women Directors list, including The Second Mother, which sits in the top five with City of God. Who are some overlooked female Brazilian filmmakers that you want to celebrate and put on our map? Undoubtedly Juliana Rojas and Gabriela Amaral Almeida. They’re both on the horror scene and their work is astonishing. I strongly recommend Hard Labor and Rojas’ latest film Good Manners (if you are into werewolves). I can’t even pick one for Almeida—The Father’s Shadow and Friendly Beast are awesome. Beatriz Seigner’s The Silences—filmed in the frontier between Brazil, Colombia, and Peru—is really impactful. Glenda Nicácio’s films, co-directed with Ary Rosa, are among my favorite recent Brazilian films. Watch To the End immediately!
Tumblr media
Eduardo Coutinho’s ‘Twenty Years Later’ (1984).
Brazilian documentarian Eduardo Coutinho has not one, not two, but three of his films in the Official Top 100 Documentaries list, including the all-time number one Twenty Years Later. Can you describe Coutinho’s significance in Brazil? Coutinho is a monument! Coutinho is an institution! Coutinho is everything. His works are of strong political importance, as you can see in Twenty Years Later. A movie he was making in 1964 was interrupted by the dictatorship installed in Brazil, and the main actor and activist, João Pedro Teixeira, was murdered, then his wife Elizabeth Teixeira had to flee and change her identity.
The documentary follows Coutinho and his crew looking for the actors from his movie from twenty years before. Later, his works developed many different tones and formats as you can see in Playing, an experimental portrayal of real women and their personal experiences side-by-side with actresses representing their real-life events as if in a play. Playing was one of the mandatory films to be analyzed for [my] Film School entrance exam, so I had to watch it a million times in 2017. His works are profound studies on Brazilian people and culture—piercing, but also delicate.
Contemporary documentaries are also doing well; Petra Costa’s latest, The Edge of Democracy, was nominated for an Oscar, and Emicida: AmarElo – It’s All for Yesterday was briefly Letterboxd’s highest-rated film late last year. How are these docs tapping into the zeitgeist? Those are both very different films. Emicida is part of a strong and structured movement against racism, against the marginalization of Black people, against limiting the access to art and culture to certain social groups, which is a common practice in the history of this country. Petra Costa’s documentary is another form of reflection on contemporary politics but in a melancholic tone since, recently in Brazil, we have been facing political storms such as the impeachment of ex-president Dilma Roussef, the imprisonment of ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (who has recently been declared not guilty), and rising far-right politicians. Not to mention another of our losses, the still-unsolved killing of Marielle Franco, a Black and lesbian political representative. These films have helped us face these difficulties and try to gather some hope for the future.

Bárbara Colen (center) and villagers in ‘Bacurau’ (2019).
How has Brazil’s cinema industry been affected by the one-two punch of the pandemic on top of ongoing social and political issues? And, can you talk a bit about how the acclaimed Cannes-winner Bacurau shocked the nation two years ago, and in what ways the film confronted these problems? This question is challenging because there’s so much happening. At this moment, we have 428,000 deaths [from] Covid and we are still mourning the Jacarézinho favela massacre in Rio de Janeiro. We have very troubled political representatives that are not fighting Covid in an adequate way to say the least, and we have had major cut downs in the cultural sector since, in Brazil, a lot of artistic and cultural projects are developed with governmental incentives. It is hard to produce art without institutional support and it is very complicated to produce art during this tragic pandemic.
Right before this chaos, we had Bacurau. Actually, I have a pleasant anecdote about my experience with Bacurau. Everybody was talking about how it was going to premiere at a special event with the presence of its directors. We had some expectations regarding the premiere because it was going to be free of charge and it would take place at the heart of São Paulo, the Avenida Paulista, in an immense theater.
We arrived at 1pm to form a line and people were there already. I discovered through Twitter that the first boy in line was hungry so I gave him a banana. I had brought a lot of snacks. The line was part of the event, and it got so long you couldn’t believe it. It was great to see so many friends and people gathered to see a movie—and such an important movie! There weren’t enough seats for everyone but they exhibited the film in two different rooms so more people could enjoy it.
I love everything about that day and I think it helps me to have some perspective on cinema, culture, politics and what we can accomplish by working collectively—people uniting to fight dirty politicians, people joining forces to fight social menaces, generosity, empathy, fight for justice and the power of the masses.
Tumblr media
The life of 17th-century nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is explored in María Luisa Bemberg’s ‘Yo, la Peor de Todas’ (I, the Worst of All, 1990).
Would you like to highlight some films from your neighboring countries? I have been watching some fascinating films from South America. Bolivian filmmaker Jorge Sanjinés has an extensive filmography and his films were the first to portray characters speaking Aymara. I really like his Ukamau. I also love Argentine director María Luisa Bemberg’s films, such as I, the Worst of All. I’m currently studying Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona, from Guatemala. I have no words to say how incendiary this film is. You’ll have to watch it for yourself!
Who are three Brazilian members that you recommend we all follow? Firstly, I recommend you follow my beautiful partner in crime and cinema, Pedro Britto. Secondly, a fantastic painter and avid researcher of Maya Deren and Agnès Varda, my adored friend Tainah Negreiros. Finally, I recommend you follow Gustavo Menezes, who is the author of many excellent lists [about] Brazilian cinema. He’s also the co-founder of a streaming platform called Cinelimite, which everyone should take a look at.

SP Yamakaze Super Oniou Event
Tumblr media
A new and revamped Super Oniou event featuring a familiar face for CN and TW/JP players. The event coincides with release of SP Yamakaze and lasts for 1 week.
This Super Oniou has been changed in quite a few ways by introducing elements more common in recent 2020 events. Hard to say if these changes are for the better.
Quick Intro
For people unfamiliar with Super Oniou / Uber type events, here is a quick intro. You can also check out the Super Onio Invasion page here on the wiki too.
Your overall goal is to find & fight 50 bosses a day, try to get the rewards for finding & fighting 100 bosses, help out/leech off friends and buy everything you consider important in the exchange shop (eg, random SSR/SP, shikigami skins, icon frames, black daruma, sushi, boss packs, etc). It is recommended to save up AP and plenty of jade to make the most of this event.
Bosses used to spawn after clearing explore, mitama or awakening/evo dungeons. Best location, however, was awakening/evo due to how easy it is to clear in a short amount of time. Any stage would do as long as you can one-shot it. Eg; attackers like SP Ubume, Tamamo, SP Ibaraki or Kuro Mujou with 126~ spd can easily one-shot stages 1-6 without the need of a puller to let them move first.
Before fighting a boss - can either use 10 fatigue or use 30 fatigue for a 2.5x damage boost. The 2.5x damage boost should only be used for soloing 5-6* bosses. If possible try to solo 6* bosses for max amount of points, if you can’t then open it up to friends but do try to secure MPV or the last hit. Absolutely don’t forget to kill the minions, not just the boss. Not killing the boss + all 5 minions before times runs out = failing and receiving 0 points.
General Info
Super Oniou bosses are random shikigami (daruma, R, SR, SSR, SP) of varying grades that represent how strong they are.
6* bosses are immune to control effects.
Only 50 bosses can be found every day.
10 fatigue is used to challenge Super Oniou bosses and 30 fatigue can be used to challenge them with a 2.5x damage boost.
There is no limit to how many times you can assist with a friend's bosses, but assisting 50 or more times will cause the fatigue cost to be tripled.
When your fatigue reaches 100, you cannot fight any Super Oniou bosses.
58 jade can be used to reduce your fatigue by 100.
Defeat bosses (getting the final hit) reduces fatigue by a set amount depending on the grade.
Changed Features
Super Oniou bosses have even higher HP than previous events.
Super Oniou bosses no longer spawn from evo, souls or explore.
Instead feathers are used to spawn bosses with the Discover button.
Instead of anima and 3 daily buffed shiki, you must pick 3 of a selection ~20 shiki everyday.
Buffed shiki only have a 50% boost to damage dealt and damage reduction for Super Oniou bosses.
Point leaching has been limited to your top 20 friends.
Instead of Vanquish there is Practice to Become King.
In Practice to Become King there are 4 Boss Challenges and 3 various types of bosses.
SP Yamakaze replaces your onmyouji in battle.
There are buff effects for him and the daily buffed shiki.
Buffs are unlocked by how many bosses you have found and fought, buffs are equipped with wolf fang necklaces
A total of 12 wolf fang necklaces can be obtained, so you cannot equip every buff effect.
Can re-equip buff effects at any time and at no cost.
Similiar to the Hyakki Yakou event, there'll be a chibi SP Yamakaze that'll auto farm event currency by fighting wolves.
For every set amount of bosses you defeat, new rewards and extra event currency will be unlocked.
Chibi SP Yamakaze will farm event currency even when you’re offline, however he will stop after couple of hours if you haven't claimed any rewards.
SP Yamakaze
In battle your onmyouji is replaced by SP Yamakaze. Unfortunately, he is not super OP like Suzuka in Journey Home or the onmyouji in Bound by Love. He's a strong single target attacker, however, unless you can sustain both him + the rest of your team or you start unlocking more buff effects he can feel a bit lacking.
Buff Effects
Next to the button for the event shop on the main event page is the button for the buffs page and SP Yama's stats.
Tumblr media
Buffs are unlocked by defeating 0/10/20/40/60/80/100 bosses and equipped with wolf fang necklaces. Most of the buffs are stat boosts for SP Yama or extra 20% boosts for certain daily shiki. Only 1 of the first row buffs may be equipped. For buffs that share one stone, the bottom one can only be equipped if the top one is already equipped. Eg; on the 2nd stone in the 3rd column is a RES boost and a HIT boost, even if you don't want the HIT you'll need to equip it to get the RES.
Recommendations: For the buff effects that are available straight away, the 1st and 3rd column ones are probably the best. The 3rd one is good for extra onibi and an ATK buff, however, both beginners and experienced players may prefer the 1st one for an extra AOE after SP Yama attacks every 2 turns.
Super Oniou / Uber
This part of the event remains mostly the same. The 2-3 biggest changes are boss spawns/discover button and point leaching.
Bosses no longer spawn from evo and souls, instead feathers that are obtained by farming are used to spawn bosses with the discover button. Costs 3 feathers to use the discover button and there's no time limit between uses of it. A max of 150 feathers can be farmed each day. Everyday at 6:00 and 18:00, 10 feathers can be collected from the main event page. The max number of bosses you can spawn is still 50 (or 56 if you remember to get the extra feathers at 6:00 and 18:00).
Short Summary: Don't need to farm evo for bosses any more. You can do your regular soul farming until you get max feathers then fight as many bosses as you want when you want before reset. For lazy people who only do evo guild quests like myself, you wont get evo materials from farming for bosses any more, but instead you'll still get them from the chibi SP Yamakaze's battle rewards.
Point leaching has been given a big change. Instead of being able to collect points from everyone on your friend list at any time, you are now limited to your top 20 friends of the previous day and points are all collected in one batch in the middle of the day from the main event page (there'll be a pop-up for it). Depending on how OP your friends are, you can get some random 6* souls as an extra reward.
Short Summary: If you're planning on clearing out your entire friend list for OP players, don't.
These are the last rewards for "Find & Fight 100 Bosses".
Tumblr media
Practice To Become a King
Practice: Boss Challenges
During the first 4 days of the event, these boss challenges will be gradually unlocked. They can be challenged from 8:00 to 23:59 everyday, costs 3 AP to do and the battles have a 3 minute time limit. Each boss has different mechanics and each has 4 stages of varying difficulties.
Mechanics:
1st Challenge: Enemies have increased crit.
2nd Challenge: Every time the move bar is moved outside of an ally's own turn, a small amount of damage will be dealt to them.
3rd Challenge: There is a damage cap per hit.
4th Challenge: All ally buff effects will fail to work.
Additional Mechanic for all 4 Challenges: Every time Boss SP Yama deals damage, he'll always do an AOE blizzard attack that can inflict freeze too.
Last clear rewards all include a stone which "weaken" the hard mode for the Become a King bosses. So if you are a beginner or aren't very strong, do not stress yourself out about getting them / defeating the 4th stages.
Tumblr media
Become a King: Various Boss Types
On day 5 a new boss becomes unlocked. It can be challenged from 8:00 to 23:59 everyday, costs 6 AP to do, has easy and hard modes and the battles have a 3 minute time limit. On hard mode the boss shares the same mechanics as the 4 boss challenges, clearing all 4 difficulties of them removes those mechanics (except the additional one).
Boss Types:
Day 5: Netherworld gate type, boss Yamakaze cannot receive damage.
Day 6: Starts out as boss defense, fight boss Yamakaze until his HP goes below 70% then he switches to 4 SP Yamakaze.
Day 7: Standard boss defense, boss Yamakaze starts at 70% HP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exchange Shop
For a full list of items in the shop, please refer to the wiki version of this guide.
Tumblr media
Majority of the exchange shop items have damage requirements to be unlocked. Eg; SSR/SP and icon frames require 2 mil damage.
Buffed Shiki
Here is a list of recommended daily buffed shiki. Only a max of 3 per rarity will be recommended.
Tumblr media
You are only able to pick 3 shiki out daily selection, so hopefully these recommendations can be of some help. Ultimately, you should pick which 3 shiki you intend in using on whichever days. Those 3 will have their 50% ATK & DEF boost increased to 100%. After picking, you cannot change your decision.
Recommended Teams
Regardless of what type of team you intend on using for whatever part of the event, if you don't have Senhime + Enmusubi you'll need to make a choice. Until you unlock the last 2 rows of buff effects, you can set SP Yama to only use normal attacks or equip 1-2 shiki with Fortune Cat. Not doing so may result in onibi issues. Once unlock the reduced onibi cost and crit/crit DMG buffs, you can start using SP Yama as your sole DPS for certain teams (ones with Youkinshi and no clear DPS).
When using Ushi, can use Shadow, Watcher or Kyoukotsu on her depending on the rest of your team.
When using Senhime, use whatever souls fits your needs. Don't need to use the same ones recommended in the below sections. Kyoukotsu, Fortune Cat and Nuribotoke are all options for her.
Feel free to look through the resource section for additional teams. Recommend looking through the past super oniou resources and guides if don't have shiki like Senhime or even Enmusubi.
Super Oniou
Tumblr media
Only the general teams are listed above. For teams recommended for certain annoying bosses, please refer to the wiki version of this guide. There is no need to prepare teams for the annoying bosses, because there is no guarantee that you will encounter them unless you’re unlucky or have extremely active friends/guildmates.
The alternative to Senhime in a lot of teams is Enmusubi + Oitsuki. If you don't Senhime or Enmusubi, then you'll need to use teams like the very first 2 listed. The 1st team relies heavily on Sasori and her splash damage, it's up to whether you want to use a shiki to help proc the splash damage or a regular AOE DPS. While the 2nd team relies on SP Yama to be your sole DPS, however, unless you have unlocked the crit/crit dmg buffs it should only be used when all the minions are KO'd.
If you happen to find a 5-6* boss and whatever shiki you're using in this event are still 5* or your soul sets are still 5* - give up fighting this them on your own. It's not a fun time when you don't have the recommended shiki and/or are too weak to tank their attacks. Try to get your friends and guildmates to help clear them.
There are also 2 additional bosses you should be wary of - the 4* Mannendake and Ungaikyou bosses.
Lastly, before challenging an annoying boss if you find one/are invited to one, always read the boss mechanics first. There are some you need use very specific types of shiki. Eg; can’t use female shiki a DPS for Kidoumaru, need multi-hit for Tamamo, need some form of shield for Susabi.
Practice: Boss Challenges
Tumblr media
Need +120 SPD for Senhime, Takiyasha, Kiyohime and Kamikui.
For the 1st and 3rd boss challenges, if you don't have Takiyasha, any other AOE shiki could work. Should use seductress + songstress instead of dawn fairy as well.
To Become A King: Various Boss Types
Tumblr media
For the day 5 netherworld gate type boss, if you remember what shiki/teams you used for the netherworld type bosses in Kinnara's event you can probably use them again here. If you have Senhime, Suzuka or SP Tama are the optimal choices.
Same advice for the day 7 boss defense, if you have happen to have a Sanbi team that you used in a previous super oniou event then use it. Use Sanbi and make me proud. Not 100% sure if I would actually use Nekomata, could probably use SP Kiyo instead. Could also use the same Yuki Douji + Sanbi team recommended in my previous guide.
For the day 6 semi boss defense, if you don't have Kinnara then any AOE multi-hit shiki, like Takiyasha or Suzuka, will do just fine instead.

HypMic 3rd Western Poll May 2020
Tumblr media
Thank you for your participation! These are the final results for the 3rd HypMic unofficial Western fandom poll. After a month of work on this, we’ve got some estimates for general fandom opinions. Do you agree with the general opinions, or disagree? Let us know!
Please click the read more to view our results!
The sample size was limited to 1000 votes, giving a rough indication of the demographic of consumers outside of Japan as well as opinions. The word ‘Western’ has been used, but we have opened this poll to those who were able to read enough English to understand this poll. As such, it is considerably Euro/American-centric.
This poll received the most activity through Twitter, given that the series is most active on that platform. The poll was also posted on Tumblr, Facebook and the HypMic wiki. Commentary has been given on sections of the poll.
Results will be posted on Twitter and Tumblr.
THE CONSUMPTION OF HYPMIC
This section is to be read as ‘What percentage of HypMic English fans have consumed x media?’ The drama tracks and songs have been split by album. Manga bonuses have not been included in the first two questions as at the time of this poll the 2nd Manga songs/dramas were being released so it would be unfair to add them to the poll.
BAT and DH order is written as such due to later stats in the poll where Doppo and Sasara were next to each other but their official colours were too similar so I used the order in Division All Stars songs rather than release order.
Pre-Season: Referring to the start of a battle season.
Battle Season: Referring to the battle/versus songs or dramatracks
1st Manga Bonus Songs: Songs that were included with the manga
DAS Songs: Division All Stars songs - songs that include the whole cast
Merch: Anything that is official HypMic merchandise or has content of HypMic. Plushies, nendoroids, magazines, stickers etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shibuya Division: Fling Posse Drama Tracks and The Loneliness, Tears, and Hope of a Puppet are the most listened to drama tracks of their respective pre-season. Both belong to Fling Posse.
The debut drama tracks of Dotsuitare Honpo (Back Again, Partner) and Bad Ass Temple (The Heart’s Conviction Can’t Be Broken) were listened to less than the other debut drama tracks.
Yokohama Division: MAD TRIGGER CREW Drama Tracks and Chaser from the Past (Matenrou: Before the 2nd DRB) were the least listened to dramatracks of their respective phases of the pre-seasons.
The Champion album has the least listened to drama tracks (Testimony and Me Against the World).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In all cases, the songs have all been listened to more than the respective drama tracks for their album.
The 1st Manga Bonus songs have not been listened as much as the other songs.
This can be due to the fact that these songs cannot be accessed for free legally.
The most listened to songs are the Division All Stars songs with the full cast.
This can be due to the fact that these are the only songs that are available in their entirety on YouTube.
Fling Posse has the most listened to songs of both pre-seasons.
Buster Bros!!! has the least listened to songs of the 1st pre-season and Matenrou has the least listened to songs of the 2nd pre-season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- side D.H & B.A.T manga was released as the poll was being conducted, so was not included in this poll.
-Before the Battle- The Dirty Dawg is the most read manga. -Division Rap Battle- side B.B & M.T.C is the least read manga.
By the numbers given for listening to the Spotify radio show, Hypnosis Radio, 80.4% of this sample size has listened to the radio - 19.6% have not listened to Hypnosis Radio.
Around half of the fandom has bought merch - this poll has included plushies, magazines etc. and all from official sources.
DEMOGRAPHICS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to the limitations of Google sheets, Africa does not show up on the chart for location as the voter percentage is too small.
The age ranges used are of a similar range to those of Japanese polls. [ARB’s recent survey and the age demographics of Comic ZERO-SUM, publisher of the FP/M manga]
93.5% of voters use translations regardless of Japanese comprehension.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The option for ‘I bought multiple CDs’ refers to both different CDs and multiple of the same CD during the battle season.
Of those who were around for the Battle Season, 15.66% of this group did purchase a battle CD.
CHARACTER VOTING
Tumblr media
For comparison, here are the rankings from the previous poll (January 2020), From Japan (October 2018) and the Yumejoshi poll (December 2019)
Tumblr media
Names marked in GREEN show an increase in vote percentage. Names in RED show a decrease in vote percentage. Names in BLACK show that their popularity rank has not changed. Names in BLUE show the character has been added to the polls through voter suggestion.
The arrow besides the names show if their rankings went up▲ or down▼. No markings are set if the character’s position has not changed.
1.2% of votes had a minor character as one of their favourite characters (Ichijiku, Nemu and Yotsutsuji - No other minor characters were suggested).
These polls vary in selection method as our polls looked at the top 3 votes of each character.
From Japan’s method has been stated as a poll but we were unable to find the original. Rio and Jiro’s reason for being unranked is unknown.
The Yumejoshi poll was done by people suggesting their favourite characters for rankings, meaning that it was not entirely based upon HypMic. What is shown here are those who ranked. The ranking in their picking of a 100 is listed against them.
These three polls have varying demographics. From Japan’s spread seems to be more broad, while the Yumejoshi poll is specifically yumejoshi/female. Our polls were taken only for English speakers. In addition to this, there is some bias based on who the poll was spread through followers.
For example, the poll was created by a Gentaro stan and main supporters of this poll are Dotsuitare Honpo stans.
Doppo dominates the polls in both English-speaking and the Japanese fandom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Characters who received less than 1% of the votes are listed as other: Jiro (0.8%), Rio (0.9%), Rosho (0.2%), Rei (0.4%), Hitoya (0.5%)
Names marked in GREEN show an increase in their vote percentage. Names in RED show a decrease in vote percentage. Names in BLACK show that their popularity rank has not changed.
The arrow besides the names show if their rankings went up ▲ or down▼. No markings are set if the character’s position has not changed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only significant change in division rankings shows that Buster Bros!!! are now more popular than MAD TRIGGER CREW.
Dotsuitare Honpo is the lowest in both the favourite division rankings and perceived lyrical skill.
SONG VOTING
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Songs marked in GREEN show an increase in vote percentage. Names in RED show a decrease in vote percentage. Names in BLACK show that their popularity rank has not changed. The arrow besides the names show if their rankings went up▲ or down▼. No markings are set if the character’s position has not changed.
Debut Songs: Songs that received less than 2% of the votes: New Star (0.3%), G Anthem Y-CITY (0.7%), Meikyuu Heki (1.6%), FACES (1.3%). These songs collectively had 3.9% of the vote.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Songs that received less than 2% of the votes: Sensenfukoku (1.1%), New Star (0.1%), G Anthem of Y-City (0.8%), Bayside Smoking Blues (1.0%), What’s My Name (0.6%), Scenario Liar (1.3%), 3$EVEN (1.9%), Meikyuu Heki (0.5%), Own Stage (1.2%), FACES (0.6%), One and Two, and Law (1.1%), School of IKB (1.2%), Uncrushable (1.4%), 2Die4 (1.0%), You Are Therefore I am (1.9%)

BATTLE SEASON OPINIONS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BATTLE SEASON HOPES
For our final question, we asked “What are your hopes for this battle season? Any plot points, theories etc. that you want to mention.” This question was not required, but we received around 300 answers to this. We condensed the material into basic categories so you don’t have to sort through all 300.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some choice points made about the plot:
What does Samatoki actually think Ichiro did to Nemu?
Could Saburo hack Ramuda?
How will Fling Posse react when they realise what Ramuda’s done to everyone else?
How do the other Ramuda clones interact with each other and everyone else
What if this is all Gentaro’s book?
What if Gentaro’s brother is the original Ramuda clone?
How are Chuo seen by other women?
Would Chuo rig the matches? Especially against Matenrou since their victory
What if they cloned someone else?
What if they reshuffled the divisions? Or added more divisions?
And here are a few funny comments before we go... just cause there were a few silly things added in that made us laugh. Yes, these are all as written.
Yo when is it gonna be confirmed that Ramuda has big top energy?
A song named "ALTERCATION ALTERCATION ALTERCATION"
I hope Rei gets his shit checked.
I'm a fictional doctor's wh o re so I'm rly in this for MTR at the moment sjfjskfkd I hope we get to hear how much the seiyuus have improved too compared to the first season!! :D
Doppo and Hifumi's wedding. Dice finally got some money. Everyone go on a hunt for emus. The 6 divisions go fishing. Rio making proper and digestible food. No more drama protecc ramuda.
I just kinda want them to kiss ngl
CHUUOKU DOWN! JUSTICE FOR ALL!!
i jokingly headcanon that gentaro cant read but i kinda hope its true. also i want sasara and ramuda to interact i think itd be kinda epic
I want Ramuda reduced to scrap metal

Auguste Racinet. The Costume History (Bibliotheca Universalis), Françoise Tétart-Vittu, Taschen, 2019, ISBN-10: 3836555409
I wanted to describe my undying love for this book, but I’m just gonna copy Taschen’s description: “Racinet’s Costume History is a landmark in the study of clothing and fashion. This reprint presents Racinet’s exquisitely precise color illustrations, as well as his delightful descriptions and witty commentary. From Eskimo attire to high French couture, this is an unrivalled encyclopedia for students, designers, artists, illustrators, and historians, and anyone interested in style.” So, yeah, this 19th century book rules.

Historic Costumes and How to Make Them (Dover Fashion and Costumes), by Mary Fernald and Eileen Shenton, Dover Publications, 2006, ISBN-10: 0486449068
From the Middle Ages to the 19th century fashion, this book is a nice resource for theatrical costuming and has good but basic bits of historical fashion information. I recommend not to buy with no previous patternmaking and fashion background, since the diagrams are quite vague, and the descriptions even more. I personally only have used this book for reference of Medieval and early Renaissance fashion (which to be fair, are quite simple). Also, it is centered in English fashions.
Themes: fashion, theatre, menswear, womenswear, middle ages, renaissance, tudors, elizabethan, georgian, victorian, 15th century, 16th century, 17th century, 18th century, 19th century.

How to Read a Dress, A Guide to Changing Fashion from the 16th to the 20th Century, Lydia Edwards, Bloomsbury Academic, 2017, ISBN-10: 1472533275
This books is very pretty and rather basic, it could be a really nice starting point for anyone getting an interest in fashion history. I’ve read reviews that it is “insultingly basic” which I do not get, I mean, if you cannot explain something in such a basic way that a child can get it, then you do not really master that subject. This books has pretty interesting info and it is a walkthrough of key silhouettes and extant garments, so it is not deeply detailed nor shows each and every silhouette of every decade of every century.

Men's Garments 1830-1900: A Guide to Pattern Cutting and Tailoring, R. I. Davis and William-Alan Landes, Players Press, 1996, ISBN-10: 0887346480
A whole book only for menswear starting with the Regency silhouette and its very particular form until the turn of the 20th century. Yes. It is pretty good, I have to say, for all our Victorian outfit needs for the gentleman. I recommend this book (and the 2nd one on 19th and 20th centuries) for people with some knowledge of construction, grading, fitting, patternmaking, and tailoring, since it does not offer much sewing advice.

Men's Seventeenth & Eighteenth Century Costume: Cut and Fashion, R. I. Davis and William-Alan Landes, Players Press, 2000, ISBN-10: 0887346375
My personal love for menswear is fueled by this book that details the suits, coats and tailcoats from the 17th and 18th centuries. It includes military fashion and other everyday clothes like breeches, capes, waistcoats, etc. via plates, figures, diagrams and texts. I recommend this book (and the 1st one on 19th and 20th centuries) for people with some knowledge of construction, grading, fitting, patternmaking, and tailoring, since it does not offer much sewing advice.

THE key source of patterns of extant garments, this series of books are the result of constant research on garments from museums, with details and info on construction, history and fashion details. You know, the kind of information you could only get with those garments in your hands.
So, as a resume, in this list there’s only the books with 18th century info in them, BUT you should actually have ALL of the Patterns of Fashion books.

Below the cut are a lot of updates I wanted to combine in one post. Most of these are the results of the polls I ran the last two weeks, but there are a couple of smaller updates to things like the points shop or minor rule updates. I tried to be as concise as possible to keep the length from getting out of hand, so if there are any questions left unanswered, I will be happy to address them! I’ll try not to throw any major updates at everyone for a while unless I absolutely have to!
This has been a lot to change, so it’s possible I may have missed a thing or two on certain pages, so if you notice anything I overlooked, please message me and I’ll fix it!
AOA has been removed from Lipstick’s past discography
There are no longer any AOA songs in Lipstick’s past discography. These have been replaced mostly with older Girl’s Generation and After School songs, including “Genie”, which has now been specifically stated as their breakout hit. Two non-AOA songs were removed, but they’ll likely be released in the future, and “Catch Me If You Can” has been moved later to be their first release after their former main vocal’s depature. A vocal position was added to the main rapper and a sub vocal position was added to the maknae. You can find Lipstick’s new discography here and their old discography here in case you want to compare the changes.
Park Duri and Zhao Tian both had MV role past claims in AOA songs that are no longer possible, so if the muns of these muses would like to change to a different MV claim, please message me!
Lip Gloss has been updated and their past discography now consists only of Orange Caramel songs. Instead of receiving backlash at the end of 2017 for releasing a song meant for Lipstick following Goeun’s departure from the group, they received backlash for releasing “Lipstick”, amid fears of the name suggesting the sub-unit would be replacing the full group as fans were unsure of Lipstick’s future as a full group at the time. You can find Lipstick’s new discography here and their old discography here in case you want to compare the changes.
Queendom will be staying with Lipstick using Nine Muses/After School/SNSD-inspired stages, based on votes, and information about Queendom has been updated on Lipstick’s, 7ROPHY’s, and Aria’s monthly schedules.
IZ*ONE has been added to WISH’s future discography
This does not affect anything in the past or present, but WISH are planned to release their first IZ*ONE release next summer. The line distribution has been updated on WISH’s page.
Gugudan and Laboum have been added to Aria’s future discography
Again, this does not affect anything in the past or present. Aria are planned to release their first Laboum release next summer. The line distribution has been updated on Aria’s page.
iKon has added to Alien’s past and future discography, B.A.P has been removed
iKon songs have replaced the B.A.P songs previously in Alien’s discography, and Alien are planned to release their first future iKon release next summer. Alien still debuted with the concept of aliens from different planets coming together, but it’s mentioned that the concept wasn’t a big part of their group concept after they debuted. Alien’s success at debut was higher than previously described, with them being widely anticipated to become a top boy group until their lawsuit, at which point their domestic success greatly suffered and they’ve been working to recover since. A sub vocal position has been added to the maknae. You can find Alien’s new discography here and their old discography here in case you want to compare the changes.
Mamamoo has been added to Silhouette’s past and future discography, Fiestar has been removed
Mamamoo songs have replaced three of the four Fiestar songs previously in Silhouette’s discography. The other one has been removed without being replaced. Silhouette are planned to release their first future Mamamoo release near the beginning of 2021. A vocal position has been added to the main rapper position. You can find Silhouette’s new discography here and their old discography here in case you want to compare the changes.
Astro and VICTON have been added to Impulse
Astro and VICTON songs will now be released by Impulse in addition to GOT7 songs in the future. This does not affect their past discography, but positions have been updated to more accurately align with all groups and line distributions have been updated. No taken positions have had their assigned positions changed. Impulse will begin to be affected by Astro and VICTON schedules next year and they are planned to release their first future Astro release near the beginning of 2021.
Two Knight positions have been updated
Knight’s main dancer/vocal position has been partially merged with the former maknae/lead dancer/rapper position. This makes the latter position now maknae/main dancer/rapper/vocal. This has been discussed with the mun of the muse currently taking that position. The former main dancer/vocal position is now a vocal position. This is to more accurately reflect the fact that, with Lay’s absence from recent EXO release, that former position wasn’t getting highlighted as a dancer in the group with any of Knight’s three model discographies anymore. I did consider bringing Knight down to eight members, but having over a fourth of the group on permanent hiatus then felt like a little too much.
Photo shoot claims are no longer limited by face claim
Muses may now claim magazine shoot references outside of their face claim. These photo shoots must still be idol-appropriate. The claims rules regarding them have been updated, so those should be read before sending in a magazine claim, please!
Foreign acting claims have been added to the points shop
Foreign acting claims have been added to the points shop due to demand. This claim is available for acting in China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, or the Philippines in roles played by current or former K-pop idols in real life. Again, there are very specific rules for these, so the new foreign acting claims rules page should be read by anyone interested in making this claim. Prices and waiting period are higher than domestic acting claims due to being cast in foreign dramas and movies being rarer and solo overseas activities like that being more of a conflict with group schedules.
The nation’s title claim is once again available with a checklist and a list of claimable titles
The claim has been reinstated with the checklist I’ve already shown to anyone who asked, with only the addition of a required solo magazine cover and a bullet point about scandals being kept to a minimum or the requirement of significant additional image-shaping through claims being needed. There is now a definite list of available titles to keep titles realistic and limit the overall number of nation’s titles possible.
As mentioned to those I’ve already spoken to about the claim, the checklist is to ensure several factors including, but not limited to: significant development into individual fame for a muse, mun dedication and development of a muse (to prevent frequent claiming of and then dropping of titles), and title’s importance to character development.
Muns are still required to discuss their muse’s path with the main before trying to claim a nation’s title.
There are specific age, gender presentation, and career limits for some. Available titles may be added as seen fit. There is also now a set rule limiting the number of potential nation’s titles per group instead of a vague general guideline.
EDIT: There are tentatively three spots for “original” titles that haven’t been given to anyone in real life or are not listed as pre-set tiles, but these will be selective and must receive admin approval. They should be comparable to existing titles without directly overlapping with any. If it’s hard to find original titles that can be approved, this option may be removed.
Muses may now only claim an MC special stage the first time they MC a show
Since the special stages are meant to introduce MCs, they may now only be claimed the first time a muse MCs for that specific music show.
Conflicting information on points blog regarding creative claims on canon features has been fixed
I noticed there was conflicting information on the points blog regarding whether creative claims were available on canon features and have hopefully removed all conflicting information. Creative claims now can’t be claimed on canon song features, but any previous claims of this nature will not be affected if I had allowed it.
Points-claimed OSTs must now be claimed before a drama begins airing
A drama will now close off to OST claims once it begins airing like it closes off to acting claims.
A Youtube song promotion claim has been added
These types of videos were previously unclaimable and considered nebulously headcanonable but not able to be made explicitly canon or claimed as viral moments. Since some interest has been shown in being able to claim them so they can be further claimed as viral moments, I’ve added the ability to canonically claim a Youtube song promotion bundle of up to four videos. Please make sure to read the rules regarding this if you plan to make a claim for this!
Only one muse per mun may now have past acting claims
This does not affect muns who already have multiple muses with past acting claims, but from now on, only one muse per mun may take up a past claims acting spot, even if they have multiple soloist muses. This is to allow more muns to possibly include that as character backstory for a muse.
Two-point playlist requirements have been updated
The requirements to collect two points for a playlist have been updated to more accurately reflect what I’m looking for. The playlist can include either a 100+ word explanation or, only if the lyrics are directly applicable to the playlist, such as if you make a playlist of songs that lyrically describe your muse’s personality or lyrically describe their relationship with another much, highlighted lyrics may be used.
Songs should also not be repeatedly used over multiple playlists so that muns aren’t making very similar playlists in theme and/or content to stock up on points. There is some margin for error here as not everyone is expected to keep up with every song they’ve already used in a playlist, but please do your best to avoid this.
The weekly chart explanation on the Exclusive blog has been updated
Nothing has actually changed about how charting is calculated, but I attempted to remove information that wasn’t really helpful and overall better explain the factors that come into play.

Can Anna Wintour Survive the Social Justice Movement? A reckoning has come to Bon Appétit and the other magazines of Condé Nast. Can a culture built on elitism and exclusion possibly change? On Monday, as swiftly as a 9-iron taken to a tee at Augusta, Adam Rapoport resigned as the editor in chief of Bon Appétit magazine after a damning Halloween photo circulated on social media that morning. Drawn from the vast insensitivity archives to which so many influential people have made inadvertent submissions, the picture, from 2004, shows him costumed in a tank top and thick chain necklace as his wife’s “papi,’’ the term she attached to it in an Instagram post several years later. As it happened, Mr. Rapoport had been facing mounting grievance from his staff about the magazine’s demeaning treatment of employees and freelancers of color and the dubious ways in which its popular video division presented culturally appropriated cooking. But these apparently were insufficient grounds for forcing him out.Over and over, power structures seem to require that accusations of racial bias are documented by photographic evidence — proof to override a reflexive or simply inconvenient skepticism. Police officers abused their authority for decades without consequence. It was not until a growing body of video footage revealed all the brutality, and the systemic prejudice at the heart of it, that the world began to express the outrage there to be mined all along — justice by iPhone. In that sense, Mr. Rapoport’s ouster at the hands of a camera was entirely fitting. Bon Appétit belongs to Condé Nast, a media empire perhaps unrivaled by any institution on earth in its supplication to image. For decades, both at the level of corporate culture and branded worldview, the company’s lifestyle magazines have held to the notion that there are “right’’ people and wrong people, a determination made by birthright.
There are the rich, and there are the dismissible; the great looking, and the condemned — a paradigm that has now become dangerously untenable, and one the company has been striving to change.Within the Condé Nast framework, autocratic bosses were left to do whatever they pleased — subjugating underlings to hazing rituals with no seeming end point. So much was excusable in the name of beauty and profit. “Difficulty,” Kim France, a former editor in chief of Lucky magazine, told me, “was regarded as brilliance.
”No one at Condé Nast has had more of an outsize reputation for imperiousness wed to native talent than Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue, the artistic director of the company and more recently its “global content adviser’’ as well. Mr. Rapoport, who spent 20 years at the company and turned around an ailing product in Bon Appétit, reported to her. What sort of management cues were to be taken? Famous for a self-regarding style — she might demand that subordinates arrive 30 minutes early for certain meetings she attended — Ms. Wintour was obviously not in the best position to try to convince him, for instance, that he should not ask his assistant (black and Stanford-educated) to clean his golf clubs. (That was one of the many revealing details in a Business Insider exposé of the food magazine that arrived this week.)Race is a fraught subject at Condé Nast. Several employees of color I spoke with, all of them laid off over the past few years, talked about the challenges they faced. They struggled to be heard or get the resources they needed to do their jobs at the highest levels; they faced ignorance and lazy stereotyping from white bosses when the subject of covering black culture came up; they all said they were exhausted by always having to explain it all.
Even though they were no longer at Condé Nast, not one of them felt free to speak on the record out of fear of retaliation from the company or the concern that they would be looked at as complainers, making it much harder to find work.Editors’ PicksHotels Transformed New York’s Social Life. Now What?Solving the Mystery of What Became of J.F.K.’s Other Patrol BoatOne former staff member who is black could not fail to see the irony in being made to go to unconscious bias training — which became mandatory at the company early last year — only then to lose a big chunk of his portfolio shortly thereafter. “I felt so devalued,’’ he said, “after working so hard.’’Unconscious bias training is supposed to alert you to your blind spots in your perception of people and ideas. But at the level of corporate and creative governance, the programming at Condé Nast has not been seamlessly woven into the company’s broader philosophy. Last month, during a round of layoffs, in which 100 people were let go amid the economic calamities of Covid-19, the company dismissed three Asian-American editors, all of whom covered culture at different publications.Among the top 10 editorial leaders listed on Vogue’s masthead, all are white. According to a spokesman for Condé Nast, across divisions on Vogue’s editorial side, people of color make up 14 percent of senior managers. On June 5, amid global protests spurred by the death of George Floyd, Ms. Wintour sent a note to her staff, acknowledging that “it can’t be easy to be a Black employee at Vogue,’’ and that the magazine had “not found enough ways to elevate and give space to Black editors, writers, photographers, designers and other creators.”Although Vogue has made a greater effort to feature black women on its covers in recent years — Rihanna, Serena Williams, Lupita Nyong’o — the gate swings open far more easily for those who are not. And in this particular area, too, legacy weighs heavily. When LeBron James made history as the first black man to grace the cover in 2008, he shared the space with a white supermodel, Gisele Bündchen, who appeared as a damsel in his clutches, an unmistakable reference to King Kong.
A spokesman at Condé Nast admitted that much progress needs to be made in regard to diversity at the company, but he defended Ms. Wintour’s record, pointing out that she has passionately supported various designers of color throughout her career, helping to raise money for them through her work with the Council of Fashion Designers of America. She also installed two black editors to lead Teen Vogue, genuinely radical in its content, one following the other (Elaine Welteroth and then Lindsay Peoples Wagner). At the same time, Ms. Wintour has presided over Vogue for 32 years, and during that period she has done more to enshrine the values of bloodline, pedigree and privilege than anyone in American media. A brief and very inconclusive list of Ms. Wintour’s assistants in the 21st century includes the Yale-educated daughter of a prominent Miami dance director, the Dartmouth-educated descendant of a major bank president, the Princeton-educated daughter of an Oscar-winning screenwriter and so on. For so long it was central to the Condé Nast ethos that you had to be thin, gorgeous and impeccably credentialed to retrieve someone else’s espresso macchiato.
Even now, as the publishing industry continues to implode and wonderful writers who could really use the work (or at least the prestigious affiliation) abound, Vogue continues to list among its contributing editors people like the German heiress Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis and many others among the well born. Five years ago, Ms. Thurn und Taxis posted a picture on Instagram of a homeless woman reading Vogue, seated on the sidewalk, with the words, “Paris is full of surprises.” Vogue quickly issued a statement, calling the gesture distasteful, and then proceeded to run her byline on its website at least 10 more timesLast year, Grace Coddington, another contributor, who had held enormous influence over what was shot for Vogue and how, in her many years as the magazine’s creative director, was photographed with her collection of “mammy’’ jars, racist ceramics depicting African-American women as servile maids.
Ms. Wintour clearly believes that she can break from the past and kill off any vestiges of a system steeped in the benighted values for which she has become the corporate avatar. The public apology from Bon Appétit was quite startling in its admission of failure, particularly its concession that the magazine “continued to tokenize” the people of color that it did hire.As part of her contribution to this new wave of progressivism, Ms. Wintour wrote a piece for Vogue.com a week after the death of George Floyd, aligning herself with Black Lives Matter and calling on Joe Biden to select a woman of color as his running mate. For someone who had seemed so averse to activism as the world has roiled from inequality for years, it felt like a desperate grasp for relevance. A spokesman for the company bristled at the suggestion, arguing that it is Condé Nast’s job “to cover what’s going on in the culture in the moment.”As it happens, André Leon Talley, who recently wrote a memoir about his complicated relationship with Ms. Wintour, as a black man and longtime former editor at Vogue, also has a lot to say about the current moment. This week in a radio interview with Sandra Bernhard, he offered his opinion about his ex-boss’s professed transformation.“I wanna say one thing, Dame Anna Wintour is a colonial broad; she’s a colonial dame,” he told Ms. Bernhard. “I do not think she will ever let anything get in the way of her white privilege.”

According to Eddy Izzard, that’s the literal translation of JFK’s famous quote as he entered Berlin during the cold war. I don’t know if Mighty Matt McElroy or Matthew “The Gentleman Gamer” Dawkins issued a similar proclamation as they entered the city for last weekend’s PAX convention, but there they were anyway.
Now, it’s a Paradox Entertainment convention so it was really focused mostly on their electronic games – but Onyx Path was there representing the happy land of Tabletop Role-Playing Games. And from what the dynamic duo reported back, it was a fantastic chance to talk with all sorts of gamers – many of whom were unfamiliar with Onyx Path and/or TTRPGs.
What was really gratifying for our team was just how positive and friendly the attendees were. You never know, going to a new city or country for a con, just how the reception will be. Well, from what they said, it was fantastic! They were able to talk about our upcoming games, both V5 and upcoming White Wolf projects, and also there was a lot of interest in our other, non-WW game lines!
For those folks who did know about us, we had some sneak previews of upcoming V5 projects – some from the V5 Chicago By Night KS, and also the text from V5 Cults of the Blood Gods. So, a lot of excitement there! There was also a lot of interest from the Paradox/White Wolf team for us to run a Kickstarter for V5 Cults of the Blood Gods. Which is always nice to hear from the folks who are licensing you their properties!
In case it sounds like our crew were just there to hang out in our booth and chat, they also had the responsibility of representing Onyx Path in many meetings where the future of V5 and all the WW IPs was discussed. Again, this was an extremely positive experience for our duo, with just tons of ideas and possible projects coming out of those discussions!
Of course, being business meetings, there wasn’t anything I can share with you here, but I can say that the refocusing of White Wolf last year has seemed to have really altered how they are proceeding, and has borne fruit in a lot of new licensed projects folks are going to enjoy.

To switch gears slightly, but not totally as I did mention Kickstarters up above, we finished up the Deviant: The Renegades Kickstarter last week! Again, huge kudos to Eric Zawadzki for his nigh-constant efforts to answer everybody’s questions in the comments as the KS ran. He was indefatigable!
We’re pretty happy with how it turned out, and big thanks to all of your who backed and spread the word about this one! We hoped that running the Creature Collection at the same time wouldn’t collide our audiences too much, and it looks like both KSs ran just fine and without overwhelming potential backers.
We’re going to try to avoid running two KSs of similar size and that might have too large of an overlap of audiences, but we have so many cool projects and settings that folks want to see Kickstarted that they’ve been backing up until now. Now, we’re going to try and use our two KS accounts to give both us and all of you the flexibility to put a project on Kickstarter as we need to and when it makes sense to.
We have, as many folks have pointed our previously, an embarrassment of riches when it comes to our projects, which really starts with the large number of game lines we are always working on.
VtR 2e Spilled Blood art by Andrea Payne
Of course, that goes all the way back to when Onyx Path first started with the WW licenses. We didn’t just get the licenses to one of the WoD lines or CofD lines, we took on the responsibility of shepherding all the existing lines and on bringing forth new ones if that what was needed.
Plus, we brought over other WW game lines, and one of those (cough, Trinity Continuum, cough) had multiple lines within it as well. We took, and still take, those responsibilities seriously as we know that every line has dedicated, long-term, fans that truly love it.
It is a real juggling act, and we’ve tried to provide every game line, every setting, with a new project and the spotlight at least once, regardless of the number of fans, over these past 7-8 years. And the flip side is that we are actually a business, we need projects that sell more than what it cost to make them – if only so everybody we work with keeps being able to afford to keep on making TTRPGs.
So those projects that sell well get follow-up projects, and those are usually within a single line, and so that line gets more focus. Which is one of reasons I’ve pushed for cross-line projects like the Night Horrors books, the Dark Eras books, or even the Contagion Chronicle, for Chronicles of Darkness (our biggest umbrella line).

Which is why our brochure this year, which is days away from going to press, is set up to talk about each setting, each game line, rather than trying to push for particular projects within the lines. We’ll do that with con-specific flyers at the conventions we’re attending, and news on all our social media sites, but we’re going to have the brochure there as a primer on just which game lines we’re doing right now.
We think that we’re at the point where we need that info out there where folks can reference it and compare and contrast our:
