car stuff is so stupid
it should not cost me almost the same amount of money to replace my key fob as the windshield?
i have given up on having power locks ever again with this car now. manual key entry it is! maybe if all it needed was reprogramming i could save up $90 for that. but what if that’s not the issue? if i have to replace the whole damn thing they’re gonna charge me at minimum $350. it’s fucked. it’s a key with a watch battery that unlocks my doors. it should not cost hundreds of dollars

Do you ever get hit by how incredible it is that we invented cars? Like fucking hell the internal combustion engine on it's own is a marvel but they're working on replacing that with batteries. We worked out how to use the same thing that powers our brains to replace a literal constant explosion machine. Then there's the smaller stuff like the key fob. You can lock a car from really far away and it's just no big deal. This is magic. We invented magic.

Now that it’s (hopefully) over, I feel like I have to document an ongoing saga I’ve been dealing with. (It’s not that serious)
Week before Christmas my car wouldn’t turn on, and jumping it did nothing so I ruled out a dead car battery. Got it towed to a local mechanic that I was trying out for the first time because I thought it would be a quick fix and my regular guy is farther away, in the old town I used to live in. Find out that because I went too long without getting an oil change on this eleven year old car, the cylinders were gunked up with old oil and couldn’t get enough compression to start. Then, because I tried to crank the engine too many times to get it to start, I physically burned out the engine’s computer.
Two holiday weekends go by before they can find a replacement engine, but the first one is too damaged to work so we had to wait for another one to become available. Then the third-party guy the mechanic hired to install the new engine computer says that he needs both original key fobs because the new ECU can’t be formatted without them. I lost one of the key fobs years ago, so I had to go to the dealership to get a new one, which was an outrageous amount of money on top of everything else I was already paying.
Mechanic gives me the car back and I manage to drive it home, but the entire vehicle is violently shaking like a go-kart or a ride-on lawnmower. Following day, the check engine light comes on and I call the mechanic. He says that shouldn’t be happening and to bring it back in. I was able to turn the car on and put it in reverse, but then it wouldn’t shift into forward drive. (I later found out that the shifting cable was being physically pinched by the engine, preventing me from going into drive). I turn the car off to give it a few seconds, but then can’t turn it back on. The same guy comes to tow me again and he comments, “wasn’t I just here a few weeks ago?”
Get new spark plugs and pick up the car a second time, but the check engine light comes on immediately and I tell the guy before I leave the parking lot. He’s incredulous, but brings out his car computer reader thing and says he’s getting the same error message, and I can tell even he’s getting frustrated now.
Find out today that one of the spark plugs had a hairline fracture that was causing electricity to arc inside the car’s hood, but once that was fixed I was able to get home without incident. So six weeks to the day and I finally have my car back.
