December 14th 2022 marked the 8th anniversary of when I found Bun by the side of the road when I was walking home after work (early shift) one rainy December morning in 2014. I knew from the moment I saw him that he wasn't a wild rabbit! I was able to catch him by offering a bit of chocolate I had in my pocket (he didn't eat it but was very interested!), and after bundling him up in my sweatshirt, we began the walk back to my apartment, which took about an hour. He wasn't happy about being carried to say the least, haha, and I'm pretty sure some people I passed thought I was carrying a baby until his little white face popped out! He was underweight and terrified of everything (not dissimilar from me at the time), but quickly put on weight & warmed up to us. I was in a really bad mental state when I found him as I was grappling with my abusive family at the time, and I really believe that we found each other right when we needed each other the most. Neither my husband or I had any rabbit experience, nor were we prepared for a pet at that point, but after we decided to keep him we put in the effort to educate ourselves about rabbit care (shoutout to the @rabbitadvocates for their wonderful resources! ❤️) to give him the best life we could. Taking care of him and watching him open up & trust us really helped to start my healing process. He had a long, happy, and healthy life, and I'm so glad that we were able to spoil him for years and years. When he passed in May, Mat and I knew that we wanted a cat, but we needed about 6 months to fully process losing our little guy. Then one day in October, I just knew that it was time, & the rest is history! Caring for Bun taught me so much, and I'm really happy to have Pumpkin around. I missed having a furry friend to take care of. The first clip is when we moved into our current apartment in 2017, and the second one is from Pumpkin's second day home!

Hello! My name is Dorian! My human found me outside a few days ago! I had been outside for a while and it was really scary. We went to a place with a lot of animals and that was scary too! Another human there waved a wand over me and said I don't have a chip. I dunno what a chip is but he also said I was too thin (rude!) I have all the hay I could want now though, and my human has been giving me lots of leafy greens! I have space to run and my human pets me all the time! Sometimes he annoys me but I suppose he's okay. He has been doing a lot of stuff around our apartment to make it safer for me.

So much has happened back-to-back these past few weeks that I forgot to post some very important news on my bunblr: there's a new bunny in the house! Meet the 9 lbs, 11 oz high-energy Jammy! ❤️

I've been looking to adopt a boyfriend for/to bond to Toto. I hadn't heard a response back on my application with a local rescue when I saw a post in my town's FB information page of someone rehoming a male rabbit because he kept fighting with the person's other rabbit.

The truth of it all ended up being that Jammy's owner was some kid who even admitted that she knew nothing about rabbits; neither rabbit was fixed, which was why they were fighting, and she was feeding both a seed/muesli mix (not good for rabbits) and kept the one in tiny hutch, and the other (Jammy) in a tiny, wire bottom cage, outside in a yard with multiple dogs, cats, and chickens.

Day 1 of bringing this beauty home and we established that Jammy is a GIRL and that she is incredibly sweet! This baby spent 2 years in cramped conditions, with poor "food", nothing to do, and had very little interaction. We set her up in a large xpen with lots of fresh hay and water, her own potty pan, toys, and blankets and she couldn't stop the kisses and binkies! She is absolutely precious and playful and wants attention 24/7, so much so that she whines and stomps at you if she's not being paid attention to, or if you-heaven forbid-stop petting her for a millisecond.

Of course, our goal is to get her spayed ASAP to prevent uterine cancer, and cut down on her naughty hormonal behaviors that have come with being a goofy handful. Unfortunately, the first appointment we can get with our exotic vet isn't until August of this year. But other than that, she appears to be healthy and free of mites, infections, or sickness! She will still be bonded to Toto in the future and I think she has the perfect playful personality that will match with the Bean(tm)'s. It will be a hilarious juxtaposition to have one giant black bunny bonded to one tiny black bunny! 🤣

And so 3 becomes 4...Welcome home, Jammy, March 25, 2024.

As Easter is approaching and it being the Year of the Rabbit many will want to bring a cute little bunny into their home or create special memories for this time of the year. As your friendly neighborhood bunny rescuer please remember that a new bunny family member is NOT a photo prop for children/babies, NOT a stuffed animal, needs annual vet visits to make sure they're healthy and thriving, they live up to 10+ years, are social but vulnerable animals and cannot be kept in a cage or outside in a pen as they do not do well in the elements or as a snack for local predators, parasites, viruses (RHDV) or strays. Your boy or girl also needs to be neutered as to not aid to the overpopulation problem as shelters and rescues are overflowing and there are not enough fosters to give them a safe happy place to live, nor enough people adopting these buns quick enough. It is important that you do your research before you consider bringing any animal into your home. Rabbits are not easy first-time pets, they are in fact harder to care for than cats or dogs, and can be much more expensive to keep.
