Children still mining cobalt for gadget batteries in Congo
A CBS News investigation of child labor in cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo has revealed that tens of thousands of children are growing up without a childhood today – two years after a damning Amnesty report about human rights abuses in the cobalt trade was published. The Amnesty report first revealed that cobalt mined by children was ending up in products from prominent tech companies including Apple, Microsoft, Tesla and Samsung.
There's such sensitivity around cobalt mining in the DRC that a CBS News team traveling there recently was stopped every few hundred feet while moving along dirt roads and seeing children digging for cobalt. From as young as 4 years old, children can pick cobalt out of a pile, and even those too young to work spend much of the day breathing in toxic fumes.
What's life like for kids mining cobalt for our gadgets?
So, what exactly is cobalt, and what are the health risks for those who work in the DRC's cobalt mining industry?
What is cobalt?
Cobalt – a naturally occurring element –  is a critical component in lithium-ion, rechargeable batteries. In recent years, the growing global market for portable electronic devices and rechargeable batteries has fueled demand for its extraction, Amnesty said in its 2016 report. In fact, many top electronic and electric vehicle companies need cobalt to help power their products.
The element is found in other products as well.
"Cobalt-containing products include corrosion and heat-resistant alloys, hard metal (cobalt-tungsten-carbide alloy), magnets, grinding and cutting tools, pigments, paints, colored glass, surgical implants, catalysts, batteries, and cobalt-coated metal (from electroplating)," says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
More than half of the world's supply of cobalt comes from the DRC, and 20 percent of that is mined by hand, according to Darton Commodities Ltd., a London-based research company that specializes in cobalt.
Tumblr media
Health risks of chronic exposure
According to the CDC, "chronic exposure to cobalt-containing hard metal (dust or fume) can result in a serious lung disease called 'hard metal lung disease'" – a kind of pneumoconiosis, meaning a lung disease caused by inhaling dust particles. Inhalation of cobalt particles can cause respiratory sensitization, asthma, decreased pulmonary function and shortness of breath, the CDC says.
The health agency says skin contact is also a significant health concern "because dermal exposures to hard metal and cobalt salts can result in significant systemic uptake."
"Sustained exposures can cause skin sensitization, which may result in eruptions of contact dermatitis," a red, itchy skin rash, the CDC says.
Despite the health risks, researchers with Amnesty International found that most cobalt miners in Congo lack basic protective equipment like face masks, work clothing and gloves. Many of the miners the organization spoke with for its 2016 report – 90 people in total who work, or worked, in the mines – complained of frequent coughing or lung problems. Cobalt mining's dangerous impact on workers and the environment
Some women complained about the physical nature of the work, with one describing hauling 110-pound sacks of cobalt ore. "We all have problems with our lungs, and pain all over our bodies," the woman said, according to Amnesty.
Moreover, miners said unsupported mining tunnels frequently give way, and that accidents are common.
Miners know their work is dangerous, Todd C. Frankel wrote late last month in The Washington Post.
"But what's less understood are the environmental health risks posed by the extensive mining," he reported. "Southern Congo holds not only vast deposits of cobalt and copper but also uranium. Scientists have recorded alarming radioactivity levels in some mining regions. Mining waste often pollutes rivers and drinking water. The dust from the pulverized rock is known to cause breathing problems. The mining industry's toxic fallout is only now being studied by researchers, mostly in Lubumbashi, the country's mining capital."
Tumblr media
"These job are really desired"
Despite the dangers and risks of working as miners in the cobalt industry, at least of the some miners in the Congo "love their jobs," according to Frankel.
"When I talked to the miners there, none of them want to lose their jobs or give up their jobs. They love their jobs," Frankel said Tuesday, speaking on CBSN. "In a country like Congo, mining is one of the few decently paying jobs to be had there, and so they want to hold onto these jobs."
They also want fair treatment, decent pay, and some safety, "and they would love for their kids to not work in the mines," he said.
"It's a poverty problem," Frankel said. "These parents I talked to – they don't want their kids working in these mines. The problem is that their school fees – schools cost money, and you know, food costs money, and they sort of need their kids to work in there."
Poverty also drives children into the mines instead of school – an estimated 40,000 of them work in brutal conditions starting at very young ages.
The thousands of miners who work in tunnels searching for cobalt in the country "do it because they live in one of the poorest countries in the world, and cobalt is valuable," Frankel wrote in the Washington Post article.
"Not doing enough"
CBS News spoke with some of the companies that use cobalt in their lithium-ion batteries. All of the companies acknowledged problems with the supply chain, but said they require suppliers to follow responsible sourcing guidelines. Apple, an industry leader in the fight for responsible sourcing, said walking away from the DRC "would do nothing to improve conditions for the people or the environment."
Read company responses here
Amnesty said in November, however, that "major electronics and electric vehicle companies are still not doing enough to stop human rights abuses entering their cobalt supply chains."
"As demand for rechargeable batteries grows, companies have a responsibility to prove that they are not profiting from the misery of miners working in terrible conditions in the DRC," the organization said. "The energy solutions of the future must not be built on human rights abuses."
An estimated two-thirds of children in the region of the DRC that CBS News visited recently are not in school. They're working in mines instead.
CBS News' Debora Patta spoke with an 11-year-old boy, Ziki Swaze, who has no idea how to read or write but is an expert in washing cobalt. Every evening, he returns home with a dollar or two to provide for his family.
"I have to go and work there," he told Patta, "because my grandma has a bad leg and she can't."
He said he dreams of going to school, but has always had to work instead.
"I feel very bad because I can see my friends going to school, and I am struggling," he said.
Amnesty says "it is widely recognized internationally that the involvement of children in mining constitutes one of the worst forms of child labour, which governments are required to prohibit and eliminate."

All right, something has come up that has sparked a thought that I need to get out of my head. Specifically I need to tell you exactly why the "take care of yourself" individualistic approach we've adopted toward Covid and toward disease in general here in the United States is a terrible idea. LONG RANT (TM) time!
WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT?
Recently, as you may have noticed if you have kid(s), infant/child Tylenol is in very short supply. It's not a coincidence that this is happening at the same time as outbreaks of RSV, Flu, and other respiratory and inflammatory illnesses are hitting kids hard and sending many of them to the hospital.
As far as the individualism, it's the general American idea that people should take care of themselves. We don't have a universal health insurance program, you have to buy it yourself (or, if you're lucky, get it through your work). We don't have a universal health care system either, people are asked to navigate a highly decentralized system of hospitals, urgent care centers, and private providers who may or may not be covered under their insurance; even the same provider for a different procedure.
Where these come together is in terms of drug distribution. You see, in many places if there was a shortage of a drug there would be a centralized system to collect and distribute it according to need. In our decentralized system, individuals are responsible for getting their own drugs.
HOW DOES THIS CAUSE PROBLEMS?
So let's think of this in terms of market forces. If something is plentiful you're not going to worry about it; you'll just go out and get it when you need it. If the supply is restricted for some reason, or if you think it might be, you'll probably try to stock up when you have the chance to get it.
If enough people stock up on it who don't actually need it, they can actually end up causing exactly the problem that they fear. Enough people buying and stockpiling can create exactly the shortage that they were buying and stockpiling in order to protect themselves against. This is known as "panic buying".
Of course, if someone who hasn't pre-emptively stockpiled the thing needs it, they may be out of luck.
THE SITUATION RIGHT NOW
After several years where respiratory diseases weren't much of an issue due to measures taken against them (masks and social distancing worked guys!) they've suddenly come roaring back. RSV, Flu, Covid, and others are now hitting kids particularly hard for a number of reasons and have overwhelmed pediatric wards in much of the country.
Even kids who don't get sick enough to go to the hospital are still getting sick and their parents are doing what we all do, giving them cold and flu medication to help ease the illness. More importantly, parents whose kids are not sick (yet?) have heard of the shortage of kids cold and flu medication and are stocking up in case their own kid gets sick.
What this means is that there a lot of parents whose kids are sick who cannot get any medication for them while some parents whose kids are not sick have medication they are not using.
And I want to be clear, this is not the fault of any of those parents. I'm one of them, I have extra Tylenol in case my own kid gets sick. This is the fault of a system that shifts responsibility for a society-wide issue onto individuals.
MARKET FORCES
Understanding the issue is best done by understanding some of the theory behind it.
Let's say that, in normal times, X amount of a good is made. When something happens to increase the demand for that good, those factories have to increase production to X+Y amount. This takes a certain amount of time. You have to secure additional raw materials, additional labor, and, if necessary, additional equipment.
In the meantime, while production gets up to speed, you encounter a potential shortage. If more people need the good than what was initially able to be produced and especially if, in addition to that increased demand, people who don't immediately need the good are stockpiling it in fear of a shortage, you can quickly run out of that good until such time as the factory or factories can increase output to meet the new demand.
In the case of something that isn't immediately necessary, this isn't terrible. If, for example, string cheese were the product in question, I think we'd all agree that it's okay and we can survive until production gets ramped up.
In the case of medication, however, this situation can literally cost lives. Children's Tylenol isn't exactly the kind of thing that will cause you to die immediately if you don't have it, but a lack of it will cause the symptoms of some children who don't get it to escalate to the point where they will need to go to the hospital when they otherwise wouldn't. Once at the hospital they will take up other resources which are also limited and which another child may die without. In other words, the lack of children's Tylenol is causing shortages of other goods which are more critical.
I should point out that none of this section is controversial, even those who promote market and individual solutions over government or centralized solutions acknowledge that these periods of adjustment occur under their proposed systems, they just believe that the benefits outweigh the costs. I simply disagree.
CONCLUSION
By making each American responsible for their own individual outcomes rather than making even the slightest effort at providing some form of centralized assistance we have created the conditions that lead to enormous market inefficiencies whenever a scarcity exists or even if one is feared to exist.
Ordinarily these are just annoyances, but when it comes to medication these inefficiencies can cost lives. There are some goods that simply need to be available when they are needed.
In a rational system we would acknowledge that some goods cannot be simply left to market forces, but our current system leaves us vulnerable to market swings when unexpected events force changes to supply and/or demand. In this way, our dedication to hyper-individualism is quite literally killing us and it would be wise of us to think about the things that we could make better instead of leaving each person to fend for themselves in a system that we know will kill some of them.

Septic notes:
The non-canon egos are basically like a protection squad
(They will go to war for each other but won't share their chargers)
The canon egos are the same way, but they are more accepting of the other group than they are of them
Angus is closest with the NC!egos, and Jameson (he just wants someone who will listen to what he has to say instead of ignoring him)
He and Henrik haven't really known each other outside of recently (their parents ended up raising them separately)
(Angus in Rook Island, Henrik in Germany)
Angus and Marvin have both studied magic
For Angus, it's mostly the history of Rook Island's magic and the magic he did in the Skyrim video, for Marvin its mostly his magic, the Magic Circle (I think that's the name of the group Marvin's in) and I.R.I.S
Henrik is also studying I.R.I.S, but its the scientific side rather than magic
They live in the same house but they have a buddy system for the bedrooms (2-3 egos a room)
It's a manor/tower kind of thing where the bedrooms are all on the second floor
They also have separate houses for their respective families (Sparrow, Schneeplestein, Brody) either somewhere else on the island or an entirely different island (like Rook Island)
Henrik will sometimes use Angus' journal to further his research (mostly to generate questions for him to answer)
The other egos are big fans of Angus' show and have watched every single episode
(The show is on their version of Natural Geographic which is doing reruns of the first ten episodes and is running the newest 13 episodes)
The team made a season 2 with 14 episodes (they are currently making the last episode) that takes place on an island called Anetalsma (or Talsma for short)
I feel like at some point Angus would need a wheelchair considering how dangerous his job is (maybe it happens in Talsma), he could also develop a respiratory problem while he's there too
Actually, since a buffalo (or two) attack him in the crocodile episode, he could've developed those problems from that
(It seems like a logical thought to me)
Talsma is snowy so the team could do a skiing video in their free time
Jackie and Chase do parkour together (because of course they do)
Jameson is from the present day, he just likes dressing fancy (he is still mute though)
Chase's and Henrik's kids hang out often (Angus' have been thrown into the mix, poor Amelia)
An alternative to Anti being the physical manifestation of Angus' vengeful feelings, is Anti possessing him (or them sharing a body in another way) but because Anti is the manifestation of these feelings, I feel like he should be able to possess him anyway
Occupation-wise, the egos basically have the same jobs they do in canon, both fixed (doctor) and variable salaries (the survival hunter job)
(Angus basically gets paid the amount on the contract, which usually isn't a lot, so he ends up selling bits of the animals to make vastly higher amounts of money)
Update: that last point is pretty much canon
As for some, like Jameson who doesn't have a canon job, I'm just putting them somewhere that loosely fits them as a character
Jameson- pub/bed and breakfast owner
Bing- research, analysis, or marketing
Chase- cashier or streamer (I'm being more accurate with Chase because he's already a YouTuber so why not stream too? He also wants to make money when he's not streaming so why not be a cashier)
Marvin- fashion consultant/designer (who do you think makes his costumes? this is paired with his magician work so it's like a side job)
Jackie- software developer (he makes his own superhero equipment, again this is paired with his hero work as a side job)
Mack (maintenance Jack, he's from fan games that I don't quite remember the names of)- maintenance and repair (for what I don't know, maybe Jackie's stuff and other things the egos need)
Henrik's last name is actually his first wife's maiden name (he didn't want to be a Burke anymore so he changed his last name when they got married, she later died and he kept it in honor of her, and when he and Judaline got married he kept it again, which Judaline was ok with)
If one of the other egos asks why the brothers changed their original last name, they just get a backhanded response like "wouldn't you?" (Angus' go to) or "I don't know Brody, why'd you change yours?" (Henrik's go to)
Jameson's pub received an email from Gavin about a proposition to put one of Gavin's casinos (which still needs a name) in the pub, it'll be in a separate area away from the alcohol (which will be sold separately and isn't allowed in the casino)
Jameson will only sell people alcohol if they have food first (this is so the alcohol is absorbed by the food, decreasing the amount in the system), there are no mixing drinks (drinking one type of alcohol and then deciding to drink another kind) either
(It isn't an Ego Island law, it's just the pub's policy)

Lithium Hydroxide Market Growth: Exploring Industry Dynamics
Introduction
Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) is an inorganic compound, specifically a salt, that is a white crystalline solid when anhydrous but often encountered as a monohydrate (LiOH⋅H2O). It consists of lithium cations (Li+) and hydroxide anions (OH-). LiOH is highly soluble in water and is commonly encountered as a solution. Chemical Properties
As an ionic compound composed of lithium and hydroxide ions, LiOH shares many typical properties of salts. It dissolves readily in water to form an alkaline solution. When dissolved in water, LiOH ionizes into lithium cations and hydroxide anions according to the dissociation reaction: LiOH (s) → Li+ (aq) + OH- (aq) The resulting solutions are strongly alkaline, or basic, with a pH ranging from 11-12.5 depending on concentration. This solubility and basicity is indicative of the ionic character of the lithium-oxygen and hydrogen bonds in the solid. LiOH also has a high melting point of approximately 550°C, which reflects the strong electrostatic interactions between ions. Uses and Applications
As an alkali metal hydroxide, LiOH has various industrial uses that exploit its strong basic nature. One major application is in lithium batteries, where it is used as an electrolyte. The high solubility of LiOH allows it to readily dissolve lithium salts and conduct lithium ions between the battery electrodes. LiOH is also used in the manufacture of lithium greases and as a desiccant to absorb water and carbon dioxide from air or gases. In the glass industry, LiOH is added in small amounts to glass compositions. The lithium ions strengthen the glass by becoming part of the silicate network structure. Lithium-containing glasses have increased durability and improved chemical resistance. Pharmaceutical applications also exist, as LiOH is sometimes used as an ingredient in antacids and other medicines due to its alkalinizing properties. Physical Properties
Beyond its chemical makeup and strong basicity in aqueous solution, LiOH has notable physical properties as well. As mentioned previously, its melting point is approximately 550°C, reflecting the strength of ionic bonding. Like other ionic compounds, it is generally hard and brittle in solid form. Anhydrous LiOH appears as white crystals or a powder, while the monohydrate exists as colorless crystals. The density of LiOH is approximately 2.00 g/cm3. In terms of solubility, it exhibits high solubility in water, with a maximum solubility of 57g/100mL at 0°C. This enables it to act as a strong base when dissolved and essentially complete dissociation into its constituent ions. The highly soluble nature derives from the ability of waters’ polarity to strongly solvate both the lithium and hydroxide ions. Environmental and Safety Considerations
Being a strong base, lithium hydroxide presents certain hazards if not properly handled or contained. Direct contact with concentrated solutions or solid LiOH can cause severe irritation and chemical burns to skin and eyes on contact. When heated, it may emit toxic fumes of lithium oxides. For these reasons, it is recommended to use protective equipment like gloves, eye protection, and respiratory masks when working with this compound. Spills or releases of lithium hydroxide into the environment should also be avoided, as its high pH can raise the alkalinity of surrounding waters and soils. Solutions must be neutralized before disposal. However, as lithium is a relatively rare element, LiOH itself does not present significant environmental contamination concerns from a toxicity standpoint if carefully managed. Overall, through prudent handling and containment practices according to safety guidelines, LiOH can be utilized safely in industrial applications. Conclusion
In summary, lithium hydroxide is an important industrial compound with applications spanning batteries, glass, pharmaceuticals and other areas. Its wide use stems from versatile chemical properties including high solubility, strong basicity in solution, and ability to conduct lithium ions effectively. Though presenting hazards from its caustic nature, LiOH can be employed safely in manufacturing when appropriate precautions and personal protective equipment are followed. A thorough understanding of its chemical makeup, physical attributes and environmental/safety considerations provides necessary background for its utilization.
