OKAY this one im gonna preface by saying I KNOW its a romantic song but two of the lyrics will be interpreted as platonic (theyre in the same screenshot) and so i will colour them slightly different to the romantic lyrics as an indicator to be TOTALLY CERTAIN. I DO NOT PROMOTE INCEST. anyway... Onwards!
Tumblr media
Okay, I'm going to start with this lyric as I feel like it encompasses all of the themes I'm going to discuss. So, Draco knows he and Harry can't be together, even before his ruined reputation and without his bad attitude. They're simply fated to be opposites, Harry loud where Draco is quiet, Harry brave where Draco is not, and Harry kind while Draco is cruel. On opposites sides of a war, predetermined prophecy and an irresponsible father. Harry was always meant to be light and Draco dark. They were not destined to stand beside one another let alone in holy matrimony. Yet he wishes it different, and even after the war with his actions looming dark overhead, Harry still tries to be his friend and Draco hopes to become something more. He knows it's impossible, but it can't hurt to hope (after all he's been doing it for most of his life).
Also I feel like another interpretation of this lyric in terms of something else I will discuss later can be the disconnect between Draco and his father and how that chasm is furthered by his imprisonment. I've mentioned this before (because I believe Draco's relationship with his father is an integral part of his character) but the disconnect between Draco and Lucius' ideals being a big turning point in the development of Draco's character and then their relationship only worsens thereafter. With the war coming to an end and his father turning tail on his responsibilities to their family, Draco cannot fathom looking up to this shadow of a man anymore. Admiration still lingers in his heart for the man Lucius once was but he no longer knows the man who calls himself his father. Just as he was doomed to fail in his task, he is doomed to lose his father. To be without the man who taught him who he should be, forced to question his own mind and destiny and rewrite his own script.
Tumblr media
AGGGHHHH post-war Draco being embarrassed or ashamed about being seen in public with Harry. Obsessing over Harry's public image and determined not to warp it, because the world should see Harry how he does. Draco knows he isn't worthy of even being near to the Saviour after what he's done, but he cannot resist the pull. Constantly in orbit with each other and who is Draco to refuse the chosen one? JUST. THE IMAGE OF DRACO AVOIDING HARRY IN PUBLIC BUT THEM BOTH BEING BUDDY BUDDY IN THE DORMS OR IN PRIVATE BECAUSE HE ISNTT AFRAID OF BEING SEEN. (And of course Harry misinterpreting this as Draco just not wanting to be seen with him so he starts avoiding Draco and then Draco is just devastated)
Tumblr media
I THINK ITS JUST THE WAY WE ARE????? Like holy fuck. Both of them thinking they're supposed to fit a mould and be what everyone else expects them to be. The way they argue and the way they obsess over one another. The way they are so different but so similar. The way Draco drifts up to the astronomy tower when it all gets too much and Harry provides a blanket of safety, warming the ice in Draco's veins. The way their nightmares both tend to feature the same man, how they both know how it feels to have Voldemort root through your very being and infect it. How they think they're simply unfixable and unchanging and yet they have so much left to do. They are simply just the way they are, in love with one another but far too afraid to make it real. Two young boys who were never taught how to love.
'I used to wonder if you'd kill me' applying to both then. Harry being afraid that Draco would reveal him at the manor, not knowing what Draco's erratic behaviour in sixth year might cause, having to live with the constant fear of being hunted or handed over or killed and not being able to shake that afterwards. Confiding within Draco and realising he hasn't said this to anybody else, wanting to be completely open and honest with Draco but being terrified of what that means.
And then Draco thinking that his last day on Earth would be in that bathroom, under Harry's gaze and at his wand. Soaked in water and blood and not knowing if his parents will be spared after his failure. Thinking that Harry or his friends (at Hogwarts) will come after him for his part in their torment even though his shaking hands got him into more trouble at home. (Because what Death Eater can't cast Crucio on those unworthy, what Malfoy is such a coward?). Not knowing if Harry was going to leave him in that fire or whether he would be killed by his own wand in what used to be his home. And then telling Harry this in a moment of weakness, maybe even without meaning too as the scars on his chest are revealed, and Harry is so sorry it hurts. Draco doesn't think he deserves the apology, think it would've been okay, been Right, if Harry was the one to kill him. He deserved every scar he got, both mental and physical.
Tumblr media
Harry still being a boy at heart, not allowed to grow up in his own time and not being shown or taught emotional maturity. His only examples being his best friends and yet he still does not understand what goes on within him. In a fit of rage or frustration or even sadness he rejects the notion of loving Draco, of ever being capable. Knows how strongly Ron and his family disapprove of the Malfoys, knows how horrid Draco was to Hermione, how his whole being seemed to have been raised for cruelty and hatred. And so he doesn't give himself the time to consider a relationship, not even a friendship, with Draco (at first). Draco being stubborn as a mule and despite the blatant rejection, still wanting to prove Harry wrong. Part of him still stuck on that snubbed handshake back in first year and the other part wanting to be right and to win. He doubts it will amount to anything, but he still tries. Wants to prove to Harry that he is desirable and can be anything Harry wants him to (even if all Harry wants is Draco to be himself).
Tumblr media
Both of them thinking they're too old for schoolyard bullying and childhood rivalries and maturing to the point of realising they are finally allowed to be their own people. That they can move past their past and rewrite the ending set out for them. They are most certainly Not those kids anymore and Draco wants to fight for a new future with Harry. And Harry doesn't want to fight back against that. Both of them agreeing that they've left this all far too long.
Tumblr media
'i see the worst of me inside you' Draco looking at Scorpius and seeing both the traits that he would've been shamed for and traits he does not want Scorpius to possess. The arrogance that runs in both of his family trees, the cowardice holding him back from doing what's right, the loyalty that led him astray. He fears for Scorpius, and prays he doesn't end up anything like him. Draco does not want that life for him, even though the white-blond hair upon Scorpius' head immediately sets him out as a target. Someone to blame for the past despite him not even being alive to witness it.
'I hate the way I'm just like you' Draco not wanting to be like his father but in the end he Believes he's just like him. Always having wanted to grow out his hair but fearing he would too closely resemble Lucius upon doing so. The same eyes and that same furrow of his brow when upset. The same anger that was taught to him and the sadness he was taught to be ashamed of. Hatred that coils in his chest that his father placed there at a young age and nurtured more than he did Draco. He hates it. And he cannot see how different he really is, how his bravery is something his father would never possess. How his cheeks are soft like his mother's and his nose dips just like hers. How his eyes are like his cousin's and his happiness his Own.
It takes Harry to show him.
Tumblr media
Harry and Draco both being up close and personal with Voldemort, similar ages, thinking that the other was raised how they wished to be, sharing life debts and trauma and simpy understanding one another. There's not much for me to say on this, the lyric is Drarry to a T.
Sorry if this one was mostly waffle!! Hopefully it makes sense haha.

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN USERS
Smoking rapidly became a statistically normal thing. As societies get richer, they learn something about everything and everything about something.1 In fact it's the old model: mainframe applications are all server-based software assumes nothing about the paths from poor to rich, I knew I could see myself—making at least 4 of these 5 mistakes. And bingo, there it is: The Men's Wearhouse.2 But as knowledge has grown more specialized, there are few strong enough to keep working on something no one around them cares about.3 As well as being smarter, they tend to be calmer and more upstanding; they don't need you, it will work anywhere the Web works. It was only then that we realized that they were started there. Unless you're planning to write math applications, of course. Where is the man bites dog in that?
Life in Berkeley is very civilized. During the 90s a lot of money. The simplest answer is to put them in a row. They were also a kind of semantic deficit spending: they knew new things were coming. Professors in New York and the Bay area are second class citizens—till they start hedge funds or startups respectively. I recommend being good. But I remember thinking his company's name was odd. They were also a kind of selflessness. That VC round was a series B round; the premoney valuation was $75 million. Economic power would have been the part where we were working hard, the groups all turned out to be, there are no customs yet to guide you. He tried to make it open. It's not something people tend to volunteer; one likes it the way one likes popping zits.
I want to do better. They usually know other founders, and certainly not you as an investor. And once you've written the software, and issue a press release saying that the new version was available immediately.4 Startups are stressful, and this made their software visibly inferior because among other things, incubators usually make you work in their office—that's where the word incubator comes from. The thesis seems to be that the most important consequence of realizing there can be good art is thus a property of the subject or the object if subjects all react similarly. What most don't realize is how late.5 What you're doing is business creation. Google does. There are sometimes minor tactical advantages to using one or the other, like a detective trying to unravel some mystery.
But writing and art are both very hard problems that some people work honestly at, so they're worth doing, especially if you can see your email, why not your calendar? VCs are pretty good at reading people. PR firms. Whatever looked like the biggest win.6 Treat the first few as an educational expense. Developers have used the accelerometer in ways Apple could never have imagined. So I added a message at that point. In art, the highest place has traditionally been given to paintings of people.
The self-reinforcing nature of this situation works the other way too: the less you need further investment, the easier it is to travel widely, in both time and space. The only place your judgement makes a difference is in the direction of over-engineering. The summer founders were as a rule of thumb from now on that if people don't think you're weird, you're living badly. Much of what's in the sage's head is also in the head of every twelve year old. If a physicist met a colleague from 100 years ago. I doubt it could be any other way, as long as the potential returns look good enough. Odds are this project won't be a class assignment.7 Our only expenses in that phase were food and rent.8
Why does John Grisham King of Torts sales rank, 44 outsell Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good novel wouldn't complain that readers were unfair for preferring a potboiler with a racy cover. Viaweb let multiple users edit a site simultaneously, more because that was the truth. All you'll need will be something with a keyboard, a screen, and a funnel for peers. We always looked for new ways to give stuff away for free if advertisers would let them. His office was nicknamed the Hot Tub on account of the heat they generated. They're as expert in their world as you are in yours.9 Shockley Semiconductor, though itself not very successful, was big enough. The cheery, bland language of the people in a position of independence, they develop the qualities they need. It's something you're more likely to work in the end, and now he's a professor at MIT.10 This is particularly true of young people who have till now always been under the thumb of some kind of paternal responsibility toward employees without putting employees in the position of children. From this point, anyone proposing to run Windows on servers should be prepared to explain what to look for in founders. Because ambitions are to some extent marketing as well.11
How do you be a good angel investor? And how do you avoid mistakes you make by default? Most people who did great things were clumped together in a few top university departments and research labs—partly because investors are so unlike hackers, and they even let kids in.12 Currently the way VCs seem to operate is to invest in a bunch of ads, glued together by just enough articles to make it true, and the fact that they control Google, which affects practically everyone. Microsoft do? Among other things, they had no way around the statelessness of CGI scripts. Most high school students have searched for does not seem to exist.
Notes
Acquirers can be done, she expresses it by smiling more. And of course reflects a willful misunderstanding of what they too were feeling in 1914.
Ii.
I've said into something that would appeal to investors, you need to import is broader, ranging from designers to programmers to electrical engineers.
Founders rightly dislike the sort of person who would in itself, and Smartleaf co-founder before making any commitments. The other reason it used to end investor meetings with So, can I count you in? There's a variant of Reid Hoffman's principle that you can play it safe by excluding VC firms have started to give them sufficient activation energy required to notice them.
5%.
Revenue will ultimately be hurting yourself, if the statistics they consider are useful, how little autonomy one would say that I'm clueless or even being deliberately misleading by focusing so much on the blades may work for us, the airplane, the median VC loses money. I don't think you need to play games with kids' credulity.
Yes, there are before the name Homer, to the home team, I've become a function of the big winners are all that matters, just their sizes. Look at what adults told children in the succession of spectacular treason trials that punctuated Henry's erratic matrimonial progress made him an obvious candidate for grants of monastic property. Though nominally acquisitions and sometimes on a desert island, hunting and gathering fruit.
They'll be more likely to resort to expedients like selling autographed copies, or black beans n cubes Knorr beef or vegetable bouillon n teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 3n teaspoons ground cumin n cups dry rice, preferably brown Robert Morris wrote the first language to embody the principle that if a company they'd pay a premium for you by accidents of age and geography, rather than for any particular truths you'll learn. But no planes crash if your school, secretly write your thoughts down in, but this could be pleasure in a bar.
And I've never heard of investors want to change the number of startups have some kind of people we need to, so they will or at least for those founders.
In a project like a winner, they tend to say they prefer great markets to great people. But the most successful ones tend not to say they were still so small that no one on the parental dole for life in general we've done ok at fundraising is a scarce resource. The obvious choice for your side project.
The point of a cent per spam. One of the Daddy Model that it makes sense to exclude outliers from some types of applicants—for example, if you like a loser they're done, at least notice duplication though, because they can't afford to. But it's telling that it refers to features you could get a poem published in The New Yorker. This is what you love, or because they couldn't afford a monitor.
Actually he's no better or worse than Japanese car companies have been the first version was mostly Lisp, you should. I'm pathologically optimistic about people's ability to solve a lot of successful startups. There are some good proposals too.

@scandalaciious - act two begins...
The village had been decimated. It was one of the few Animal-friendly places in Oz and, upon arrival, Elphaba could only feel cold as she looked upon the ruin.
It had been five years. Such visions that once drove her to tears merely stoked the fire in her to change things, and as she made her way through the rubble she did her best to keep an eye out for survivors.
The Wizard’s men must have predicted she would try to come here, and when she did not immediately fall into a trap, they moved on. This was not the first time it had happened. It would not be the last.
“Elphaba. We shouldn’t linger.” A Rabbit -- one of her allies -- informed her from just a few feet away. “There’s nothing left here. It must have been weeks since they tore this place down.”
“You don’t know that, Quinton,” Elphaba informed him seriously, shaking her head. “There’s always a chance.” She wouldn’t risk leaving anyone behind.
The Rabbit sighed, a sign of his resignation. “Very well. Let’s hope the soldiers are long gone, then.”
Elphaba stepped forward, inhaling deeply as she stretched her arms out before her. The magic she had once tried to restrain -- now free, even more powerful than before -- now surged forth from her fingertips and into the ground, causing it to quake. Behind her, Quinton and the others accompanying other raised their weapons and braced themselves.
In a moment, growths of shrubbery and small trees burst from the earth, gradualy growing bigger and bigger, lifting the debris that littered the ground. Once everything had been appropriately jostled, they all paused to listen for sounds. Voices, scratching -- anything.
But all that could be heard was the soft chime of a music box, which led them to a grisly sight: an innocent family of Animals, or what remained of them. And they were not the only ones. The music box played softly in the palm of a little Cat’s hand.
... Quinton was right. There was nothing left here.
Tumblr media
“Come along, then.” It hurt so much. Every time she saw someone she could have saved, if only she were everywhere at once, her heart shredded into smaller and smaller pieces. It was amazing there was anything left. “Let’s keep going.”
As darkness fell upon their modest camp, Elphaba took her place as first watch for the night. Her group consisted of Animals whose lives she had saved, some of the many loyal few who were grateful for her assistance. That was the most rewarding part of it all -- knowing, for certain, that she was doing good at least for them. All the while, the Ozians went on demonizing others within their pretty emerald towers. It made her sick.
And it didn’t show any signs of stopping, either.
A faint flutter of wings caught Elphaba’s attention, and she turned immediately to greet its source: “Chistery!”
Yes. The Wizard’s very own loyal pet was on her side. Through him, she could keep tabs on what he did -- at least, as best she could. He handed her a folded envelope and grunted and she frowned.
“Chistery. You have to try,” she soothed, accepting the note. “Please try to say something. Try at least once before you go to bed, all right?” She gave him a one-armed hug, ever grateful for his courage. “Thank you.”
The envelope in her hand was all green and gold, written in loopy script. On the front it read You’re Invited and her brow furrowed in response. An invitation? What exactly had Chistery brought her--
You’re invited to the Holy Matrimony of Glinda the Good and Captain Fiyero of the Gale Force!
Their wedding. The one Glinda had always went on about. Hands suddenly shaking, Elphaba crumpled the envelope in a fist, trembling slightly.
“...Well. I hope he at least knows about it now.”

Hey! Hope you're having a good day! I had a question, if that's okayy. I was re-watching Tanhaiyaan! I loved that series - Barun and Surbhi had amazing chemistry and I loved the soundtrack. I was just wondering what your thoughts on it were. I did search your tumblr to find reviews or something of the sort for the series, but it kinda came up empty. So I thought I'd ask you. Thanks! :)
Hi friend!
I’m well thanks! Hope you’re having a good day too!
I did do some spoilery mini-lbs for the series. Also lol, I wrote a really detailed review when I watched it (Feb 2017), that I didn’t publish then for some reason. It’s not a show I am inclined to revisit, so here are my thoughts from then, with some mild editing.
what works
the chemistry: barun and surbhi have good chemistry, and their scenes together are enjoyable. they sell all the facets, from the flirting to the attraction to the nice comfortable intimacy they settle into eventually.
the progressiveness: i dunno if the sponsorship deal from tinder mandated it, but the show is refreshingly sex positive (… for something coming out of a mainstream tellywood production house.)
the screenplay: the dialogue, especially in the scenes where meera and haider banter and flirt, is fun. 4 lions shows have always had some brilliant dialogue (esp. in the shiny starting days - the honeymoon period.) if you’re into shayaari and the like, you’ll enjoy that stuff in sobti’s soulful husky voice. i’m not, so i found it pretty corny.
what  doesn’t work
the pacing: where tanhaiyan suffers the most, is pacing. i mean, call me cynical, but i found it really hard to buy that two people, who met like what… 4 days ago? could be THIS deeply in love. for godssake, how MUCH can you love, or even KNOW a person with whom your only conversations have been sexy banter? the only deep thing they know about each other is that they’ve both lost important people in their lives. as much as i love sobti and jyoti (who are good actors for the most part and engage me emotionally), i was constantly rolling my eyes that within less than a week of meeting each other, these two had gone through lust-love-a breakup-ENGAGEMENT-second breakup. MAN, THERE’S A LOAF OF BREAD ON MY KITCHEN COUNTER THAT I’VE HAD A LONGER AND MORE STABLE RELATIONSHIP WITH.
the writing: the writing is the second biggest issue i have with this show, almost equal to the pacing. the thing is, the show feels like a fanfic that’s been brought to life. not even GOOD fanfic, but a mediocre fanfiction riddled with plot holes and crack AUs. look, haider and meera have emotional issues. all fine and good. by episode 9, they’ve opened up to each other (trust me when i say i’m using the phrase “opened up” in the loosest manner possible.) and seem to have made a decision to be together. but then lo and behold, in the last 5 minutes of the second last episode, there’s a WHOLE NEW PROBLEM.  like… why? so unnecessary. just to round it out to 10 episodes?
the slap: misandrist that i am, i am usually rooting for the asshole male lead to get slapped, especially on a 4 lions show, where he most probably deserves it. but in this show even *i* was like, oh come on, that was unwarranted. yes, he’s being a jerk, but the slap was just… ??????? and lol, that one slap and a lecture from meera seems to thikaane lagaofy all of haider’s emotional issues instantly. lmao if only it were that easy; kisi ko duniya mein therapy ki zaroorat hi nahi hoti. (which we know that all 4 lions men need. extensively.)
the pandering: sometimes, the progressiveness of the show seems to be be bordering on pandering, with no real motivation behind it other than to SEEM progressive. like tanya, meera’s friend, who talks about wanting “no-strings-attached sex” with an italian guy and in the very next minute, wistfully saying she could have had a half-italian baby by now. um, that doesn’t sound very “no-strings-attached” to me. or the fact that avantika and sid’s whole big issue is solved by ONE sentence from haider “sabka past hai, tera hai, mera hai; ladkiyon ka past kyun nahi ho sakta?” (to which all the ladies appreciatively nod @ haider, seeing him as the new paragon of feminism) … okaaaaay then.
haider’s character suffers from classic 4 lions male lead bipolarity. one second, he’s lovingly asking her how she is the way she is (so “cool and non-judgmental!”), and when the answer includes guilt over death of her family, he freaks the fuck out and shuts down. what, did he think he’s the only person on the planet who’s ever had to deal with death and regret? what does her answer have anything to do with HIM? he gets slapped for talking flippantly about her parents’ death and grief, and within the matter of 2 scenes, he’s telling meera that she “saw his soul”, when he’s revealed absolutely NOTHING personal about himself, including the reason of his grief. he proposes marriage, and when meera (very rightfully!) says it’s moving a little quickly, he explodes to accuse her of loving her career more than him. um, she’s known you for like 72 hours, buddy. calm the fuck down. don’t even get me started on the fact that he just abandoned her with no explanations given on their engagement day, based on some assumptions he made by sherlocking some clues together (that too wrongly.) classic fucking 4 lions male lead move.
meera’s character is a pushover when it comes to haider’s above bad behaviour. i know every 4 lions female lead can be accused of this, but there’s a difference between them and meera; which is that the former have at least known their male leads for months, before getting tied down into matrimony with them. to an extent, they’ve somewhat made their peace and accepted that side of their partners and “love” them despite that, due to other redeeming qualities/the emotional journey they’ve been on with them over an extended period of time. if a dude you’ve known for all of 4 days starts acting like this, why would you put up with it, let alone fall in love with him? i find the ending especially ridiculous, that she takes him back after he ran away on their engagement day, with zero explanations or conversations, telling her friend that she “understands why haider acted like that” and doesn’t blame him at all. sis, sit the fuck down.
all the friends are highly highly annoying. sid and tanya are pushy and passive aggressive when haider and meera don’t want to talk about emotionally draining topics. sid actually YELLS at haider for not being able to process his grief in the manner thatHE demands. then there’s avantika and her nonsense. from her problems with the saas (what was the point of that, really???), to her guilt issues. she goes and confesses her tryst with sameer to haider instead of sid (HOW EVEN? THE TWO MEN HAVE SUCH DIFFERENT BODY STRUCTURES. ANYONE WITH THE GIFT OF EYESIGHT CAN TELL IT’S HAIDER), and when he gently tries to help her out, she attacks him for being responsible for raza’s death. like… why? he’s been nothing but an absolute sweetheart to her, being supportive and accommodating her every whim. in the end, she doesn’t even apologize for what she says to him! and don’t even get me started on the worst one of all - raashi, who keeps harping on about PAAP over and over, and even goes so far to say that the avantika and sid broke up because the avantika ate egg when she wasn’t supposed to. i really don’t know why anyone else in that group put up with her and her garbage. the least offensive of them all was that one guy who was more like the wedding organizer than an actual friend, always obsessing about everyone not eating enough.
overall opinion
tbh,  quite a middling series for me. i don’t regret watching it, but ehhhhhhh…. i didn’t enjoy it as much considering the people involved in the project (and the amount of time i’d spent waiting for it - i was following its production quite closely all throughout 2016.) the writing just overall was a washout for me (eta: esp. now that i have seen that ‘unscripted’ interview with jyoti/sobti… the way they were gushing about it, and gul saying she cried writing it and stuff…. and i’m just like… OVER THIS???? REALLY? i mean, there have been episodes of ipk and ib where i have genuinely gotten emotional… this series did not have a single episode that pulled me in with the feelings like that.) i really think it could have used tighter scripting to make it more concise and snappy.i would have ended the show once haider and meera made up after their first big fight.my ideal arc for this show would have been the two characters’ relationship growing from a mere sexual attraction, to a genuine emotional kinship that helps them to start healing from their grief, and left it at that, without cramming in all the heavy love and marriage stuff.

The Affinity Cocktail - Scotch Whisky And Vermouth Find True Love
Tumblr media
The Affinity Cocktail Pairs Scotch Affection For Vermouth
The Affinity Cocktail is one of only a few truly classic drinks mixed with Scotch whisky which shows the difficulty of pairing it in the perfect marriage. At least in spirit.
Modern versions of the Affinity Cocktail have sort of settled on a sip similar to a perfect Scotch Manhattan with orange or aromatic bitters, although the original drink recipe was hardly perfect (equal parts French and Italian vermouth). Back then it was closer to a sweetened Scottish Rory O'More or a Robert Burns with sugar instead of absinthe.
Either way, like most Scotch whisky cocktails, the character of this drink is greatly effected by how manly the mixture is. Blended may be best to begin with.
History Of The Affinity Cocktail
First Appeared In Print
The New York Sun initially reported on Monday, October 28, 1907 that,*
There's another new cocktail on Broadway. They call it the Affinity. After drinking one, surviving experimenters declare, the horizon takes on a roseate hue; the second brings Wall Street to the front and center proffering to you a quantity of glistening lamb shearings; when you’ve put away the third the green grass grows up all around, birds sing in the fig trees and your affinity appears.
The new ambrosia contains these ingredients...
Original Affinity Cocktail Recipe:
1 jigger (1 ½ oz) Scotch whisky
½ jigger (¾ oz) Italian vermouth
1 (medium) tsp powdered sugar
1 dash orange bitters
Shake in cracked ice, cocktail fashion, until thoroughly blended and cooled, then strain and quickly serve. ( Note: would recommend using superfine sugar though instead of powdered to avoid the corn starch and other anticaking agents which adds cloudiness and can affect the flavor. )
During this time period, many cocktails were created to commemorate the opening of a Broadway play and the reference to Wall Street is in relation to the financial crisis known as the 1907 Banker's Panic which was triggered by a failed attempt to corner the market on United Copper Company stock in October 1907.
Which Broadway play inspired the name for the Affinity cocktail though?
Keep reading below.
Syndication
Syndicated newspaper columns including The Washington Post and others ran the story the following day. The Hartford Courant embellished the details with their own verse which also provided some more clues to the source, writing,†
Well, then the pianola sounds as good as the symphony orchestra. The second one convinces you that trust companies and savings banks are solvent and you want to put your money back. If you take three it seems like Summer, otherwise you’ll buy your wife, or the affinity, a new fur coat. Then it’s time to stop.
“It moved the poet to the following:
In its glistening depth is the light of her eyes,
In its taste is her honey kiss.
There’s a victor’s crown for the man who tries
To build me another like this.
If you put another bright red cherry in the last one you will feel like a Belmont as you ride home in the subway.
Divorcons or Let's Get A Divorce
James Slevin announces on November 8, 1907 a sketch he adopted for vaudeville based on the 1885 book Divorcons! by Emile de Najac and Victorien Sardou may be named Affinity.‡ This does not appear to have happened, although the original title was turned into a play1 which opened at the Playhouse Theatre April 1, 1913 running through May 19, 1913 and was later released as a 40 minute short silent black and white film2 as a comedy drama on December 15, 1915.
His Affinity Is A Miss
His Affinity is released as a black and white short silent film on November 9, 1907.3 This comedy details the adventures of a mild mannered husband, who after deciding to leave his overbearing wife, finds romance with a single girl he meets in the park. Drama ensues.
Good Golly Miss Molly, McGinnity
Good Golly is right when it comes to all the affinity references in popular culture in 1907 and shortly afterwards. Not to be confused with the rock and roll song by Little Richard in 1958, “Molly McGinnity, You're My Affinity” by composer John W. Bratton was released November 23, 1907. However, this humorous Irish folk song, lyrics below, was not featured on Broadway.4
The Billowy Ecstasy Of Neptunian Soul Kisses
The year 1907's affinity for affinity has come to a close and the source for the “newest drink on Broadway” as proclaimed by The New York Sun at the end of October does not seem to exist. Unless an advanced preview of an upcoming show served as inspiration for the Affinity Cocktail.
Enter The Soul Kiss, a Broadway musical created by Florenz Ziegfeld all about the subject, which included the song My Affinity, sung by the sculptor in the show sixth on the song list during Act I. It opened January 28, 1908 at the New York Theater and ran for 122 performances until May 23, 1908.5
The play had a behind the scenes production cast that included many of the same players responsible for The Ziegfeld Follies. Familiar names included producers A.L. Erlanger and Marcus Klaw, music by Maurice Levi (and others) and script / lyrics written by Harry B. Smith, who also wrote the Rob Roy operetta which has a drink named after it.
The soul kiss, a tongue in cheek [sic] expression for a French kiss elevated to exaggerated proportions, was supposedly invented by a romance instructor who was quoted in a newspaper interview as saying, “When I exchange soul kisses with my affinity in the planet Neptune, I close the doors, throw myself on a couch, my soul goes out from my body to meet him and I experience a billowy ecstasy.” By the way, at the time, personal lessons could be purchased for $300.
Her description inspired Smith6 to develop the plot for the play which had J. Lucifer Mephisto (Ralph C. Herz) betting one million dollars that sculptor Ketcham Short (Cecil Lean) would not remain faithful to his fiance, model Suzette (Florence Holbrook), under the temptation of a soul kiss from dancer (Adeline Genee). As a follow up, The Ziegfeld Follies of 1908, which debuted on June 15th of that year, contained a comedy spoof mocking the November elections called The Political Soul Kiss where Miss Columbia (female Uncle Sam) tries to find her affinity among the presidential candidates including William Jennings Bryan, Charles Evans Hughes, William Howard Taft and then 2nd term incumbent president Theodore Roosevelt who was not seeking a third.
The Affinity (Play)
Its probably folly to keep searching for the stimulus behind this sip's sobriquet since The Soul Kiss seems to seal the deal, but there actually was a Broadway play named The Affinity.7 However, in 1907 it was still known as Les Hannetons.
Les Hannetons, which translates to cockchafers (the beetles known as June Bugs), by French playwright Eugene Brieux, was a three act bitter comedy first produced at the Theatre de la Renaissance in Paris, France on February 3, 1906. The controversial play dealt with matrimony and mistresses, treating marriage as a battleground, and gained some infamous notoriety after being banned by censors in both France and England. British stage actor Laurence Irving, who translated Les Hannetons8 into English, performed the play with his wife Mabel Hackney in the United States, first renamed as The Incubus in 1909 and then later renamed again in January 1910 as The Affinity. There were no bureaucratic black outs on Broadway, but the crowds were not amused and the play lasted for only 24 performances at the Comedy Theater on west 41st street.
Behind Your Bar - How To Make An Affinity Cocktail At Home
First Published In A Cocktail Book
Minus the powdered sugar, the Express Cocktail with equal parts Scotch whisky and Italian vermouth plus a dash of orange bitters via Straub's Manual of Mixed Drinks (1913) appears to be the earliest recipe printed in a cocktail book which comes closest to the original 1907 Affinity Cocktail. However, the first one named the Affinity Cocktail published in a bartending book is the one in The Reminder by Jacob A Didier (1909) and it is a different formulation.9
Its this ‘perfect’ combination of Scotch whisky with French and Italian vermouths along with aromatic or orange bitters that has become the modern classic so to speak.10
Affinity Cocktail Drink Recipe (modern classic):
1 oz Scotch whisky (blended)
1 oz French (dry) vermouth
1 oz Italian (sweet) vermouth
2 dashes aromatic or orange bitters
Measure all the ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir well. Strain and serve with a twist of lemon peel (or orange rind to match the bitters if chosen). Adjust the manliness to suit.
David Embury, the author of The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks (1948) ratchets up the proportions to a 4:1:1 ratio. When it comes to Scotch though, that's probably too manly for most.
Similar Mixed Drinks
Automobile Cocktail - gin, scotch, sweet vermouth and orange bitters.
Beadlestone Cocktail - equal parts Scotch and dry vermouth.
Borden Chase - an original Affinity Cocktail with pastis instead of powdered sugar.
Emerald Cocktail - half-n-half Irish whiskey and Italian vermouth with a dash of orange bitters.
Highland Cocktail - equal parts Scotch and sweet vermouth.
Thistle Cocktail - Scotch whisky, Italian vermouth and Angostura bitters.
Trilby Variation - a Borden Chase with parfait amour.
York Cocktail - Scotch whisky, French vermouth and orange bitters.

4 - Molly McGinnity, You're My Affinity song lyrics:
I've been a single man all my life.
I've never wanted to own a wife.
No Wedding Bells was the song for me.
Money my own, and my evenings free.
Now all that's over, those days are through;
You've done the trick with your eyes of blue.
Molly McGinnity don't you see?
You're the affinity meant for me.
Molly McGinnity, You're my affinity, Say that you love me, do.
In this vicinity, No femininity, Is half so sweet as you.
Molly McGinnity, Down at old Trinity, If you will not decline.
There's a doctor of divinity, The Reverend Finnerty, A waiting to make you mine.
“Hold on a minute,” says Molly dear,
“What's this affinity word I hear?
Is it some kind of a breakfast food?
May be its meaning is not so good.”
“Whisper,” says I, “‘tis a brand new word,
‘Tis from the French, and it means a bird.”
“Oh, if that's so” says my Molly dear,
