A funnyman's recap of Blue Archive
Volume 2 Chapter 1
We begin by being summoned to a Game Development Department at Millennium Science Academy! That's right, we're going to be real gamers now! Of course, the GDD doesn't ask for Schale willy-nilly, as they have a good reason.
That reason being that their club is on the verge of being dissolved. Catastrophe! Not only do they only have 3 members instead of the usually required 4 (exceptions apply, but not this time), they also haven't put out anything worthwhile. Their only achievement being a game they made.
It got "Worst Game of the Year" award.
We got our work cut out for us...anyway, the cute and funny cast (I SINCERELY HOPE THAT THIS IS THE ONLY TIME I MAKE THAT JOKE BECAUSE I DIED A LITTLE INSIDE)

These two implore the Sensei to aid them in their gamer quest to find the artifact of power, so that they may make the greatest game of all. They seek the G.Bible, something that houses the secret to making a good game, authored by a legendary game developer.
To do that, Sensei must accompany them to the abandoned district, teeming with rogue machines and danger. Within the ruins they find...
A girl.
And the G.Bible, but mainly a girl who has no idea how to human. It's pretty fucking clear that she isn't, but nobody questions the existence of an android, and they got the thing, so what the fuck ever.
Momoi has to sacrifice her saves on her handheld to download the G.Bible, which end up becoming unable to be retrieved. Sadness was had, but educating a clearly confused android girl comes first. And how do they do it?
Why, in the best way of all: Video games! Specifically, a marathon of retro RPGs, which Sensei leaves them to because ain't no way someone wouldn't dome him for fucking around like that.
This marathon ends up creating the glorious creature that is

Round 2B
Tumblr media
Elliott Smith’s Either/Or: Separate from the rest, where I like you the best, and keep the things you forgot. Either/Or is the third studio album by singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, recorded in 1997 in the dissolving days of Smith’s former band Heatmiser. The album is characterized by its raw, introspective lyrics and Smith's delicate yet emotionally charged vocals. The tracklist explores themes of love, addiction, despair, self-destruction and self-reflection with haunting tones, often accompanied by Smith's finger-picking guitar work; Either/Or would go on to be regarded as an album of profound tragedy, and would regularly feature on rankings of “saddest records.” The album's intimate and minimalist production adds to its appeal, making it a beloved classic in the indie folk and alternative genres. Either/Or did not chart on release, but Smith would briefly be cast into the international spotlight when he performed the standalone single Miss Misery at the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony, due to the song's appearance in Good Will Hunting and its subsequent Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Regardless of chart status the album was critically acclaimed, and has only grown a stronger cult fanbase following Smith’s untimely death a few years later.
The DVD Launches in America: It's March 24th, 1997, and as a nation we're starting to get a bit bored of award shows (the more things change, the more they stay the same.) Viewership is down for the 69th Academy Awards, hosted by Billy Crystal; The English Patient is absolutely clearing house and winning Best Picture, but critics would later say that sucked the life out of the room and left a dull atmosphere to hang. During the event, though, something long-delayed is coming to pass, and it'll ensure a spike in viewership for every film that takes home an Oscar moving forward: the DVD is being launched in the United States. Development of technology and the production process to follow can take decades and stagger public access for years, which made the life of the DVD for those behind the scenes feel ages longer than it would actually reign-- but while it reigned, it reigned. For those of a certain age, it's hard to believe the DVD had the keys to the kingdom primarily from '97 to '06 when the Blu-Ray would step onto the scene to mixed success, but split consumer attention with risingly-accessible digital purchases and streaming. By no means is the DVD dead today, it simply enjoys a different life on the shelves of collectors; it is not quite a nostalgic media format yet (as the VHS tape became) but generally exists in a space between what is current and what is retro. The value of owning physical media is gaining recognition in the corporate streaming age, and the DVD has emerged as the face of this above all formats.

I was really sure that taylor was gonna win SOTY for ATW10 but now I don't think so😔Harry is literally everywhere. AIW was the most streamed song AND one of the biggest radio hits. The sound is retro rock and lyrics are somewhat meaningful instead of filler. It was critically acclaimed and commercially successful and broke a lot of records. Now I really think he's gonna grab both SOTY and ROTY. It was even in charts until recently. What do you think?
if taylor, an artist who, above all things, is renowned for her songwriting, and has never won the songwriting grammy award (a fact that is objectively nuts!), doesn't win SOTY for a ten minute version of the most widely acclaimed song in her entire, very expansive, catalog...i will have no words. it'll make the academy look like a joke tbh. i think it has added appeal because it's such a magical journey of a story, following red from its initial release and the reaction to it transforming over time, knowing she sang atw on the grammys all those years ago because *we* wanted her to, the lives the song has had, the mystique of the ten minute version finally coming to fruition. plus, it is genuinely gorgeously written and performed, and did add real substance and new facets to the original work, that in turn opened up the rest of the album. it should win and i'll be shocked (and very sad tbh) if it doesn't.
one key thing is, the grammys have been a bit better about spreading the wins around in the last couple of years. so i don't think they'll focus on only one artist or vote for a sweep.
as it was undeniably is the biggest hit of the year (definitely the song of the summer and a defining piece of 2022), it was #1 for fifteen weeks, it's currently the fourth longest running number one in the hot 100 charts' history. it would still be in the top ten right now were it not for christmas music, it's had real longevity. i think harry has a great chance at winning ROTY and best pop vocal for the album. i think they'll recognize the strength of its sound (it's interesting because i don't even think aiw is the standout of the album, but it's a perfect single. retro edge, sparkling synths, sounds upbeat but the lyrics are lonely and vulnerable, personal yet spoke to a vast audience's different experiences, the tubular bells, that now iconic bridge!) and why it's been such a success. (the bizarre foaming at the mouth hatred people have for him and for taylor is laughable at this point.) harry's a good songwriter and he keeps growing in new ways! we love to see it! but if you put aiw and atw toe-to-toe just on the merit of the songwriting alone, there's no way all too well doesn't come out on top unless they deliberately ignore it, which i really don't believe they will now. it broke a #1 record of its own, which was special to see, but ultimately everything rests on the strength of the song itself, and the song is a jewel.

DESN512 - WEEK 1: TDC Poster Research
Title: Chinese New Year. Client: Crafts Museum of CAA. Credited To: China Academy Of Art. TDC Award: Communication Design, 2022.
Created by designers from the China Academy of Art to advertise an exhibition at the crafts (ethnic and folk art) museum sector of the academy, this design displayed through cards, posters, murals, and web design. Comprised by a bright colour scheme, this poster appears very flat and uses repeating shapes to create the illusion of hanging Chinese banners – supporting and demonstrating the idea that the exhibition itself is on the topic of Chinese New Years. The poster is very balanced, symmetrical, and proportioned well, its simplicity also adding to the design's versatility – hence being displayed in many different formats. The obvious alignment of the body text also makes the text easier to read and follow, while the bold date to its left emphasises the date. The contrast between the bright colours and the white portion at the bottom, along with the shapes representing banners slowly decreasing in size towards the bottom adds emphasis and leads the eyes to the valuable information at the bottom; dates, locations, information, etc. And while its simplicity could be considered the nature of the design it could have benefited from an extra layer of depth; the banners having shading or there being a subtle colour or gradient in the background to further emphasis the white portion at the bottom. Overall, this design is clearly well executed and demonstrates its message well, being partly Chinese myself, it is interesting to see how Chinese New Year and its aspects were displayed in a simplistic and modern way.

Title: Word Paintings Client: Architreausres Credited To: Architreasures. TDC Award: Lettering, 2023.
While not necessarily a poster, ‘Word Paintings’ is a creative painting that demonstrates playful and creative lettering. Hard to see at first (or for me at least), the painting says, ‘Just Be Who You Are.’ What first caught my eye in this piece was the different shapes used in this piece, particularly the contract between the shapes with sharp corners and the rounded, circular shapes – both further emphasised by the black ‘background’ between each letter. The shapes, lines and forms used reminded me of the Bauhaus design era that I studied in Level 2. The colors share a fun, creative, spunky manner and with the colors being partially separated, each word is easier to spot; using color to the designs advantage. This painting is well balanced and an example of that is in the word ‘Be.’ While the letter B is larger than the letter E, the pattern used to depict the letter E evens out both the letters, making neither heavier nor lighter. While not being a poster, there is a lot this piece demonstrates about design, to me, particularly the way shapes and abstract forms can be used to depict different things while also remaining abstract and artistic.

Title: No title. Client: Self-initiated project, The World Through My Lens Series. Credited To: Heejae Kim. TDC Award: Ascenders Competition, 2023.
Created by famous RISD alumni Heejae Kim, this poster titled ‘Heejae Kim: Korea Town’ was created in a series created by Kim titled ‘The world through my lens.’ Within the poster itself there is no main image or header, the cutout photos and aspects are all evenly distributed thorough the entirety of the poster and prove that this poster is less an advertisement – or even trying to convey one single message – this poster is more a work of visual art. The poster is well balanced and symmetrical in the sense that the photos are evenly distributed and that there is no side that is heavier or lighter. My interpretation of this poster is that it is a commentary on Korean and American culture in America and shows the contrast, yet similarities between the two; having this overarching retro theme and look to the entire poster. And although the choice of photos was eclectic and the scattered arrangement further shows that, the background gradient of blue and grey helps tie it all in together and appear like a group and collection of images from one specific place – the darker blue in the corners acting as a vignette. While I could criticize the lack of a large main focal point, I think the lack of such is the point of the poster. It demonstrates the intricacies of everyday in a place even as small as Korea Town, from plants, people, signage, cars, objects, and food. While being a poster with no overt message or thing to sell, the simplicity of the poster leaves the ‘message’ it is trying to communicate up to the viewer which was the point to begin with.
Tumblr media
Title: Bourgie Hall 10th anniversary. Client: Arte Musica. Credited To: Luc Verreault, Marianne St-Pierre, and Vedran Vaskovic. TDC Award: Communication Design, 2022.
Designed by three designers from Paprika studios in Montreal, these posters were designed for celebrating the 10th anniversary of Salle Bourgie, a concert hall in Canada. With this collection of posters, it is easy to see that they all share a similarity in shape and form (with the shapes forming the number 10; a nod to it being their 10th anniversary), while also each sharing identical text. What had initially caught my eye with these posters was that each of them seemed the same, but they were all different. The similarity in shape between the posters make the collection together more successful, with the posters being quite easy on the eye because of its simple imagery, small text, and muted colours. With the posters sharing this circle next to a stick shape, while also all being musical instruments, it communicates the idea that the instruments are all within a group and that they all share similarities. And with the event itself being an anniversary, these designs are remarkably simple, and through that alone communicate the idea that the event is likely, for adults and a sophisticated event. Overall, this design is very well executed, and shows how simple imagery and shape can communicate an idea strongly – even if it is subtle.

The Pokémon TV series or Pokémon anime is the iconic all-ages animated show based on the immensely popular Pokémon trading card and video game franchise. Premiering in 1997, the series follows the irresponsibly-young adventures of a trainer named Ash Ketchum and his electrifying companion Pikachu as they travel through the many regions in the Pokémon world, capturing and training Pokémon, competing in battles, and aiming to become Pokémon Masters. Along the way, they encounter friends and rivals, foil the plans of the villainous Team Rocket, and of course document and capture lots of funny little guys (Pocket Monsters, as it were.) You gotta catch 'em all!
