"Have you told your sister?" Scott asked as they got ready for the game.
"I'm not really sure how. Even I don't fully understand it." Liam told him, pulling his jersey on over his pads.
"Well, she's adopted, right?" Liam nodded at Scott's question. "She could have been born a supernatural but never known. It happened to Lydia."
"The assassin is going to be out tonight. You have to tell her soon." Stiles butt in, and Liam shook his head.
"She's dating Parrish; he can protect her until I figure out what to do." Liam told them, grabbing his stick and shutting his locker. They had been having the same rendition of this conversation for at least thirty minutes, and he was tired of fighting.
"Parrish doesn't know about the deadpool. He doesn't know that she's on it. He can't protect her if he doesn't know what to protect." Stiles pointed out. Scott nodded as he look to his beta.
"We have to at least tell him." Scott agreed, shutting his locker in unison with Stiles.
"Can't we just play lacrosse?" Liam asked. Scott and Stiles shared a look, frowning. They both knew Liam would never be able to 'just play lacrosse' again. "Look, the assassin is on the lacrosse team. Y/N and Parrish have a date night tonight anyway. We just need to worry about ourselves not getting killed." He pointed out, making the older boys nod.
"Alright, but after tonight, we have to figure out a plan." Stiles said as they turned their attention toward coach. He had been talking, giving some kind of speech, but it apparently wasn't important.
"It's only one night. She won't even be here." Liam said, mostly to himself. He was trying to keep from freaking out, because not only was he at risk of dying, but now his sister was too. The worst part was that he didn't even know what his sister was, and he wasn't sure anyone else would either.
~
"I don't want to have to cancel." Jordan said from his desk. His girlfriend was sitting on top of it, frowning. She had gone all out for this date, even shaving, and of course her boyfriend was busy.
"I know you don't." She looked down, trying not to let her emotions get the best of her. She knew that he wouldn't cancel if he didn't have to, and it did look like he was drowning in work, but it still made her sad.
"The Sheriff is going to the lacrosse game and with all the murders happening-"
"Hey," Y/N grabbed his chin and made him look up, and he sighed as he looked at her gorgeous face. It always grounded him. "It's okay. Maybe I'll go to the lacrosse game too." They shared a kiss, and Jordan wished he could just leave his job.
"How's Liam?" He asked, making Y/N groan.
"I know you are not asking about my brother in the few short moments we have together." He chuckled, kissing her again. He wanted to tell her about Meredith, who was in the Sheriff's office and the reason why he had to cancel, but that meant he could lose his job. He knew that weird things were happening, but he didn't know how to describe it. And part of him - the selfish part - didn't want to somehow endanger or worry her.
"Sorry." He smiled, and Y/N returned it. She got up to leave, giving him a few quick pecks before walking out. "I love you." He called making her smile wider and turn around
"I love you too."
When she got to her car, she tried to call Liam, but it just went to voicemail. She figured he was warming up, so she'd just go anyway. She let his recorded voice ring out as she turned the car on, putting it in reverse as the line beeped.
"Hey, Liam, it's me. Jordan had to cancel, so I'm gonna be coming to your game." It was silent for a second as she thought about what else to say, but ultimately came up empty. "Alright, well, see ya soon! Love you!" She hung up, throwing her phone into the passenger seat and pulling out of the station.
~
"Liam, is that your sister next to Mason?" Stiles asked the group. They all turned to look into the stands, and Liam put his hands to his head, trying not to break his helmet as emotions ran quickly through him.
"What is she doing here?" Scott turned, and Liam shook his head as he began to freak out.
"She had a date with Parrish! She isn't supposed to be here!" Liam said, the others looking at each other to figure out how to calm him down. She smiled and waved from her place in the bleachers, alone, without Parrish. She was sitting with Mason and Violet, which honestly almost made Liam feel worse. But, she didn't know Malia or Lydia - she had only heard Liam talk about the juniors at random times. As Liam scanned the crowd, he wasn't even sure they were here anyway.
"It's okay, we'll keep an eye on her. As long as she doesn't come out onto the field, we'll be good." Scott patted Liams shoulder before jogging to his position as Coach began to yell at them.
They were losing by one point, only a couple minutes in, and Y/N could tell something was wrong.
"Who are you guys playing?" She asked Mason, who looked at her as if she were crazy. The two had only been introduced once at the Dunbar house, but Y/N didn't know anyone else to sit with; her step-dad was working and her mom had some sort of club tonight.
"You don't know?" Mason asked as Liam got knocked to the ground. Y/N gasped and stood, not even noticing the other team had scored. When Liam got up and took off his helmet and began to shake off his gloves, she realized.
"Oh my God." She whispered, sitting back down. "We're playing Devenford."
"Yeah." Mason confirmed, watching Liam get held back from a fight. Y/N looked around, realizing the Sheriff had never made it. She wondered what the hold up was at the station, and what Jordan was doing.
The game passed, Kira scoring the first goal but then immediately being taken out. There was definitely some extra tension on the field, Y/N noticed, even within their own team. The game kept getting more brutal, and sure enough soon Liam was being flipped over two other players. Y/N didn't have time to think before she was running down, her brother's screams igniting her older sister instincts. She made it to the field, pushing everyone away until she got to her little brother on the ground.
"Liam! Oh my God, are you alright? What's hurt?" She asked. She went through her mental checklist, but she didn't finish before two other players were hauling him up. "Hey!" She screamed, pushing them away.
"How hard did you hit him?" Number 11 asked her bother, and Liam shook his head slightly.
"I didn't." He answered, and Y/N pushed the other boy away.
"Liam, where does it hurt? Is anything broken?" She asked, checking his arms. It wasn't long before she found the broken bone bulging out of his arm.
"Ow." Number 24 commented, but Y/N ignored him.
"Alright, let's get you to the hospital. I can try to reset it, but-"
"No," Liam breathed as Number 11 took off his gloves. He looked at Liam as he took his arm, and Y/N tried pushing him away again.
"Hey, stop! You're going to hurt him!" She yelled, but Liam shook his head.
"Y/N, let Scott fix it." He told her. She stood still, not sure what was going on. How was this high school senior going to fix a broken arm? Her heart was racing, head spinning as all she could think about was if Liam would be okay.
"Close your eyes." Scott told Liam. Y/N watched as Scott twisted the bone back in and Liam cried out, and she really pushed him that time. Scott went flying back, and she quickly began to check Liam's arm. She didn't notice the looks the others gave her at the display of unusual strength.
"I-I don't understand, how is there no discoloration? No blood?" It seemed Liam's arm was as good as new as she checked it, and Liam moved to place his hands over her's.
"Y/N, I promise I'll explain, just wait until after the game, please." Liam told her. She nodded, trusting him, but a terrible feeling began in her gut. She watched Scott and Liam both shoot their heads toward another player, Scott immediately searching his own body.
"Are you cut? Did Garret cut you?" He asked Liam. Liam looked at his arms, shaking his head.
"No, no. I'm okay." He told Scott, the two of them looking at their teammate. Y/N placed her hands over her abdomen where the pain was coming from, surprised to feel a liquid there. Apparently her gut feeling was a bit more than a feeling.
"Then he missed." Scott said, but Y/N just shook her head. She was beginning to feel faint, like her head was clouded.
"I don't think he missed." She muttered, pulling her hands away from her dark sweater to reveal the blood on them. She began to fall, and Scott and Liam moved to grab her as she fell. She grabbed Liam's jersey, pain coursing through her stomach. Unbeknownst to her, her eyes flashed purple. Scott and Stiles looked at each other.
"What does that mean?" Liam asked, holding her close.
"I don't know, but we have to get her out of here without anyone else seeing." Scott told Liam, the two of them looking around. They had no idea where to go, where someone wouldn't see them.
"We just have to go for it." Stiles said. Everyone was focused on Brett, who was still down, so the four of them slinked out, Scott holding Y/N. They made it to the jeep, where Y/N was laid in the backseat with Liam.
"Should we call Parrish?" Scott asked, and Stiles just shook his head.
"Lydia just cracked another third of the deadpool." He said, looking between his phone and the road. Scott took the phone, looking at the list.
"Am I on it?" Liam asked, scooting up.
"What the hell are you all talking about?" Y/N groaned, her eyes flashing purple once more. "And why is everything so loud?" She cried, pressing her hands to her head. The engine sounded like it was inside her brain, echoing and rattling her skull.
"Someone else is on it." Scott commented, showing Liam. He sucked in a breath as the Alpha took back the phone. Of course Parrish was on the list.
"Please someone call Jordan. I want to talk to him before I die." Y/N said, sitting up. She groaned, realizing the shirt Liam had been wearing under his uniform was pressed to her abdomen, which was still profusely bleeding.
"You aren't going to die." Stiles rolled his eyes before looking in the rearview mirror. "Probably."
"Stiles!" Scott scolded. They couldn't be telling her that she was going to die on her first supernatural experience.
"Where are we going, this isn't the way to the hospital." Y/N commented as she focused her eyes. She had never been in this part of town, only having moved with Parrish last month. Before, she had lived in the neighboring town with her family. When her mom had married Dr. Geyer and moved to Beacon Hills, Y/N had already moved out.
"Don't worry about it." Stiles winked at her through the mirror, but she wasn't looking. She was on her phone, trying to find Parrish's contact. Just as she was going to press on it, it was pulled from her.
"You can't call him." Liam said, snatching her phone out of her hand.
"Why," Y/N stopped, falling back against the wall of the car and groaning as a wave of pain hit her. She opened her mouth in pain, not even realizing her incisors had grown. Liam looked terrified as she cried out, eyes flashing purple once more. This was not the face of a werewolf.
"Guys!" Liam called. Scott turned, eyes widening when he saw what was going on. Y/N was still withering in pain, oblivious to what they were talking about. She flopped against Liam finally, who was freaking out.
"Holy shit," Scott whispered as Stiles turned into the parking lot. Her eyes closed and the incisors went back to normal, but she was barely breathing now.
"We need to get her inside!" Liam yelled, helping Scott get her out. They made it to the door and into clinic quickly, Deaton looking only mildy surprised as they burst through the door.
"She has purple eyes and fangs!" Stiles yelled, but Liam growled at him immediately.
"She was stabbed. It has to be poison." He informed the vet. Deaton nodded, then looked at them.
"I have to cut her chest open to extract the poison. See how she's foaming at the mouth?" Once Deaton pointed it out the obvious, and the other's nodded. "I need you to hold her down." He told Liam and Scott. The two move to each side, where she was seizing.
"Won't cutting her open kill her?" Liam asked as Deaton cut her clothes open. He grabbed a scalpel, pressing it to her skin.
"If she is what you say she is, and she is effected this bad by the wolfsbane, then she'll be fine." Deaton couldn't waste any more time, pressing the scalpel into her skin and cutting. Just as he had finished the incision, police sirens were heard outside.
"Did you tell your dad?" Scott turned to Stiles, able to let go of the girl now. She was laying still on the table, breathing evenly.
"No, dude, I swear." Stiles shook his head, and Parrish came running in.
"What did you do to her?" He yelled, pushing past everyone until he was right next to her.
"You cut her open? What the hell are you thinking?" Jordan held her hand, pushing her hair out of her face. He was shaking as he looked at the bloody cut, holding her hand but not sure what to do to help. He couldn't even think of a plausible reason why the boys would take her to a vet when she was clearly hurt, and he was even more baffled by the fact that the vet thought he was qualified enough to cut into her like a surgeon.
"Parrish, just-just calm down, okay?" Liam said cautiously, but Jordan looked at him with fire in his eyes.
"This is your sister we're talking about! How are you fine?" Jordan had tears falling out of his eyes, then turned to Deaton. "You! You're a veterinarian, not a human doctor! This is illegal on so many levels! As soon as I make sure she gets to the hospital, you're coming with me!" Jordan yelled, not paying attention to Y/N anymore.
"Parrish, she's okay." Scott told him, making him look at her. She no longer had the long gash going down her torso. Jordan simply stared, not sure what had just happened.
"Is this some kind of joke?" He asked, sniffling as he looked around the teens and doctor in the room. There was no actual explanation for this, he was sure of it. They had to be pranking him for some sick reason.
"There's a conversation we have to have." Scott told him, but before he could get any further, Y/N was breathing in and opening her eyes. They were purple, making Jordan even more confused.
"Y/N, what's going on?" He asked, but she just closed her eyes and groaned. When she opened her eyes again, they were normal.
"Jordan? What happened?" Y/N asked, looking around as Jordan took his jacket off and wrapped it around her, letting her zip it up. She felt her torso, realizing her stab wound was gone. "What is going on?" She looked up at Liam, who was blinking dumbly.
"I have no idea." He said, and Y/N was about ready to lose her shit.
"What do you mean?" She cried out, feeling Jordan tense next to her. She turned to see Liam looking completely fine. "Your arm was broken, like twenty minutes ago!" She saw her brother looking completely fine.
"I told you so," Stiles muttered, and Y/N wished she had something to throw at him.
"You didn't tell us shit," Liam said, instantly annoyed.
"Yes! I did!" Stiles exploded, looking very offended. "I literally said 'You need to tell her.' I believe those were the exact words that came out of my mouth."
"Tell me what?" Y/N asked, tired of watching her brother and his friend bicker.
"What?" All three teenagers asked at the same time, wide eyes looking completely guilty.
"Liam," Her big sister eyes came out, which made Liam cower slightly.
"It's a long story," He starts, turning to Scott as if he would explain everything. Y/N was staring intently at Liam, brows furrowed and eyes angered. She screamed when Scott turned to her with red eyes.
"Oh my God," She whispered, leaning back against Jordan. She closes her eyes. "What the actual fuck?"

Auston Matthews #1 - Prom
This is my first attempt at any sort of imagine/ specific character writing. The inspiration for this prompt came from my little brother going to prom recently and asking his girlfriend in a similar fashion.
Auston had always been a year ahead of you in school. When he had graduated and subsequently been drafted you two decided to continue your relationship despite the distance.
During one of your Friday night skype calls you had mentioned to Auston that the official theme for prom had come out. The committee apparently had some clashing views so the end result was more of a mix of various classic themes that they hoped appealed to everyone. He had laughed at that and asked, “so when is it?”
“Uh,” you paused and pulled up the calendar on your phone, “Saturday March 4th at 7.”
Auston pulled out his own phone, “perfect. We play Anaheim on the third then I’ll fly down in the morning and be there in time.”
You looked at Auston in confusion, “wait fly down? Auston you’re coming?”
“Of course. Why wouldn’t I take my girlfriend to her senior prom? Unless of course,” he smiled cheekily, “you were planning on going with someone else. I know that Brandon from the lacrosse team always had his eye on you.”
You rolled your eyes, “Brandon has been dating Thomas for three years and you know it.”
“Alright well, how are you going to ask me?”
“Ask you? Why am I asking you?”
“Well how I see it is that I asked you last year. It’s only fair that since you still go to that school that you ask me,” said Auston like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Whatever,” you grumbled, “we’ll see.”
“You better make it pretty,” he teased, “I want to be wooed.”
With the help of Mitch, you managed to get two tickets to their home game against Ottawa. Your parents only agreed to let you go after you promised no school would be missed and no grades would drop. It was an easy promise to keep when you actually had something to lose. Your best friend had practically begged you to take her along and since you’d rather not make the trip alone, you easily agreed. The two of you had spent days deciding the best way to go about asking him and it was after hours of internet searching that you picked what you felt was the perfect poster design.
This is why you found yourself shivering as you exited an airplane into Toronto Pearson International Airport during the middle of February. You and your friend quickly made your way to baggage claim and waited as the carousel slowly made its way around. Your obnoxious Maple Leafs patterned bag, which was given as a gag gift from Auston was easy to spot. That was the only upside to something as hideously designed as it was.
With all of your items successfully gathered the two of you left the airport in hopes to flag down a cab. Instead what you found was a man dressed in a rumpled suit holding a sign with your name written in glitter pen. The man in question was a one Mitch Marner who’s already smiling face brightened when he saw you. He waved you over and hugged you with the enthusiasm of a puppy whose owner had returned from vacation.
“What are you doing here?” you questioned.
“Auston would kill me if he found out you were coming and I made you take a cab.”
That answer didn’t surprise you. As much as your boyfriend tried to play it cool and aloof he had a very protective side that could come out at any time. Mitch helped load your luggage into the trunk of his car and opened the door for you and your friend to slide in.
“Why thank you Mr. Marner,” you teased with your best posh impression.
“Please, just call me Mitch. Mr. Marner is my father.”
The three of you settled in for the drive to your hotel and it was the quiet singing from Mitch that kept the ride from getting too uncomfortable. About fifteen minutes away from your hotel his phone began ringing and vibrating loudly enough to startle you and wake your friend who had dozed off beside you. According to the Bluetooth in Mitch’s car it was Auston calling.
“Shit,” you swore under your breath.
Mitch glanced at you in the mirror, “if I don’t answer now he’ll keep calling. You know how he is.”
You did in fact know how your boyfriend got. You gave Mitch a quick nod and he pressed the answer button on his steering wheel.
“Yo, Mitchy!” your boyfriend’s voice filled the car and you couldn’t help the small smile that appeared on your face.
Mitch saw you and rolled his eyes, “yeah Matts, what’s up?”
“We still on for dinner tonight man? Willy wants to know.”
Mitch paused, “uh yeah as far as I know. Just gotta drop some stuff off first.”
“Alright cool. See you at seven.”
He hung up and you couldn’t help the giggles you let out.
“Drop some stuff off,” you said struggle to catch your breath between laughter, “nice choice of words there Mitchy.”
“Yeah shut up, whatever.”
You were about to respond when you felt your phone vibrate in your lap with an incoming facetime call.
The panic must have been evident in your eyes because Mitch didn’t open his mouth to tease you. You let the call ring out and pulled up your messages to text your boyfriend.
“Hey can’t talk now. I’ll call you later.”
The response was almost immediate, “ok. Everything ok?”
You sent back a simple thumbs up and closed the app. You knew if you continued the conversation you’d end up spoiling the surprise.
The car pulled into the hotel parking lot and Mitch helped unload your things before giving you a quick hug and climbing back into the car.
“I better get home and change before the guys wonder where I am.”
“Yes have fun with them. Thanks for the ride!”
“Of course,” Mitch started the car, “you’re my friend too.”
He checked for cars before reversing out of the space and driving off. You and your friend gathered your things and checked in at the front desk. The hotel was nice enough that there would be no fear of unwanted bugs but not too nice that you would be broke for months. It was also close enough to the stadium that you could walk to and from the game. The two of you decided to stay in for the night and go out and explore in the morning. It had been an exhausting day and after a quick shower you were both out like lights.
There was an insistent buzzing from your night stand that woke you up. You hadn’t turned your alarm on as it was Saturday and you actually were able to sleep in. The buzzing eventually stopped and after nearly blinding yourself with the brightness of the screen you saw you had a series of missed calls and texts from your boyfriend. You checked to make sure you hadn’t woken your friend and quietly made your way into the bathroom to listen to the voicemails. The first few were just Auston saying he was calling to check in because you had missed your Friday night facetime. By the third one he was wondering if he had done something wrong and you were mad at him. The fifth and final one was sad enough to hurt your heart as he sounded defeated. Though you were sure there had to be alcohol involved you hated how upset he sounded. Scrolling through the texts you saw that they followed the same general line and you quickly pulled up a new message to him, “Hey I am so sorry I didn’t call you back. I had a long day and fell asleep super early.”
You hoped Auston wasn’t too upset with you over this. You were planning the promposal tonight and if he was mad it might not go over well. Since you were up you decided to just get ready for the day. With a quick peek out the door you could see your friend start to stir and you hurried to get done before she needed into the bathroom.
There were no strict plans for the day. You had decided to walk around Toronto for a bit before grabbing a late lunch and going back to the hotel to get ready. Auston had given you a jersey just after his signing claiming it was the custom. His parents and sisters had each gotten one as well and it while it didn’t seem like a big deal you understood the unsaid sentiment. You put it on and layered up with the numerous other pieces of gear you had acquired over his time on the team. Not all of it was Maple Leafs themed and you were sure this was his subtle attempt at trying to convince you to move up north for college.
Satisfied with your outfit and being sure to grab the rolled up poster, you and your friend exited the hotel and prepared for the trek through the snow to the Air Canada Centre. It was already bustling with fans when you arrived and received your tickets at will call. It was only when you began walking to your seats did you feel the nerves in your stomach. The two teams were starting their warm ups with the Leafs on the side closest to you. Auston and a few others had their backs to you but Mitch watched you approach. He managed to keep Auston’s attention on him as you unraveled the poster you had made. Once it was open he nudged your boyfriend in the side and pointed over his shoulder towards you. He spun around and you watched as a range of emotions flitted across his face. He blinked a couple times as if he was sure you were a figment of his imagination.
Auston skated over to you and shouted through the glass, “what are you doing here?”
You pointed to the poster in your hands that read “Scoring a Date with You Would be Pucking Awesome. Prom?”
He threw his head back in laughter before nodding, “yes. Of course I’ll go to prom with you.”
“Was it special enough for you?” you asked in reference to your conversation over a month ago.
Auston looked at you quizzically, “what?”
“Did I woo you? Were you wooed enough?”
The realization dawned on his face, “yes! Consider me officially wooed.”
The two of you stared adoringly at each other until Mitch skated over and pushed Auston, “I am all for this cute lovey dovey shit but dude we’ve got a game to get ready for.”
Your boyfriend was startled as if he had forgotten where he was. He looked back to you, “meet me at the locker room after the game okay? I love you but I have to go.”
You nodded back, “yeah I love you too. Now shoo. Go play a game.”
Your friend had taken pictures of the event and posted it to her twitter. By the end of the first period it had already blown up and was retweeted to the Maple Leafs official account. As far as promposals went you had a feeling it was one of the more memorable ones.

In the late 1970s, when he was 10, Rob Nissen played for the only soccer team available to kids in his middle-class, New Jersey town. “It cost $20 to join, and you got a T-shirt and you played,” said Nissen, who today is a book publicist, still in New Jersey. On Saturdays, he would put on his white canvas Keds and head over to the one park in town that was big enough to accommodate an actual game. No girls’ teams waited on the sidelines—only boys played soccer. Soccer has come a long way in America. Today, millions of American boys and girls play it. It’s a shift that has delighted many: the sport’s fanatics, parents who don’t want their children getting tackled on football fields, and the kids themselves, who often develop a lifelong passion for the sport.
But American youth soccer—and, in particular, the kind played outside of school, on competitive private “club” teams at the highest level—has also come under criticism. The problem, of course, is not with the sport itself, but with the highly demanding nature of the top tier of play. (In the U.S., other sports, such as lacrosse, volleyball, and basketball, have club systems that can be just as demanding as soccer’s, though soccer’s is the most widespread.)
For one, the risk of injury is high, due in part to many kids’ decision to focus intensely on one particular sport. In 2016, the American Academy of Pediatrics warned that “the increased emphasis on sports specialization has led to an increase in overuse injuries, overtraining, and burnout.” An analysis in the medical journal Pediatrics of soccer-related emergency-room visits among children aged 7 to 17 reveals a dramatic uptick in injuries: Researchers found that the annual rate of injuries for every 10,000 soccer players rose by 111.4 percent between 1990 and 2014; the annual rate of concussions and other “closed head injuries”—when the head is hit, but the skull isn’t penetrated—over the same period went up by 1,595.6 percent. Girls are injured more than boys. Knee injuries, including ACL tears, are nearly four times more likely to bedevil female soccer players than male. (The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reported that female soccer players have a higher rate of concussion than football players.)
“Almost all researchers in the field agree that later specialization”—ideally, after the early growth spurt associated with puberty—“is the healthier route (from the perspective of the child’s overall well-being),” Richard Bailey, a senior researcher at the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education, wrote me in an email. “And that is why they predominantly recommend … [the] sampling of multiple sports, the development of a broad base of movement skills, and delayed specialization as the preferable approach.”
U.S. Soccer, the sport’s national governing body, has a different perspective. The organization’s chief medical officer, George Chiampas, told me that findings from an upcoming study that he co-authored, which compared injury rates among boys on teams in its Development Academy, a program set up by U.S. Soccer to cultivate top players, found no difference between those who just played soccer and those who played additional sports. Is it ever too early to specialize? “It depends on the environment,” he said.
Unlike U.S. Lacrosse, which has come out in favor of multi-sport play, U.S. Soccer has taken no definitive position on specialization. “We’re still analyzing the research,” said Ryan Mooney, U.S. Soccer’s chief soccer officer. As evidence of the organization’s commitment to protecting kids, Chiampas pointed to a safety and injury-prevention platform, Recognize to Recover, and to the fact that in 2015, U.S. Soccer instituted a rule disallowing children 10 and under to head the ball. Chiampas also said that the organization has stepped up its coaching education and is deeply committed to creating a “culture of safety” for all players.
Intense youth travel teams can also send unhealthy messages, to kids and adults alike, about a family’s priorities. Club soccer can require heroic measures on the part of adults—driving regularly to and from distant games, giving over sacred weekends to a child’s pursuit, and dividing up the family to deposit different kids at separate venues. One of the main jobs of parents, said Madeline Levine, a psychologist and the author of The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage Are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids, is modeling for children what adulthood should look like. Youth sports teams that require parents to devote huge amounts of time and income signal to children that grown-ups are an afterthought, and that being a parent is an exercise in passivity and boredom. “We have become so child-centered that what kids have to look forward to [when they become parents] is diddling with a cellphone and sitting passively, not being an active participant,” she said.
Another downside for elite youth-soccer players is that their clubs tend to pull them away from their high-school communities. Those who play for the rarefied Development Academy teams are prohibited from playing for their schools. Even if they make friends on their soccer teams, “the kids lose out,” said Roberta Moran, the athletic director at Kent Place School, a private girls’ school in New Jersey. “They miss the social aspect of playing a sport with their community of friends at school.” Less-competitive club teams don’t draw kids away from school as strongly—many play for their schools as well—but also exact a social cost, as their year-round schedules make it difficult for players to participate in other sports at their high schools.
Last year, U.S. Soccer imposed a new rule that made these problems worse. The rule was seemingly innocuous: Clubs had to start organizing teams according to players’ birth year rather than their academic year, which caused a lot of roster reshuffling. Victor Matheson, an economics professor at College of the Holy Cross, said that U.S. Soccer made this change to more easily identify the top 20 teenage players for the 17-and-under World Cup, which will be held in Peru next year. He says the change has further disrupted players’ social lives, as it has split up established teams made up of longtime friends. “The entire program is designed to train and identify an elite core of 20 players who will be on the U.S. team in 8 or 18 years,” said Matheson, adding, “this is a tiny fraction of kids who play soccer.”
Part of the reason soccer has this incredibly demanding top tier, said Rick Eckstein, a professor of sociology at Villanova and author of How College Athletics Are Hurting Girls’ Sports, is that it’s one of the most commercialized of youth sports; it contains a flourishing industry of tournament directors, private club and travel teams, and assorted soccer-related businesses whose financial interest is served by the status quo. And unlike basketball, say, which also has a sturdy commercial presence, soccer has developed so that the top players are identified and nurtured only through clubs. While college-basketball coaches still scout players at gyms and high schools, their counterparts in soccer rely on “showcase” tournaments to fill out their teams. “Soccer is the poster child for hyper-commercialized youth sports because it is played across the country and across the world, it has extraordinarily high participation levels, and is equally commercialized for girls and boys,” Eckstein wrote in an email.
Though U.S. Soccer sits atop the pyramid of organizations that oversee all American leagues and teams, it has limited authority over private clubs, and tournament directors, college coaches, and others who make money from youth soccer have little incentive to change. The clubs’ business model “is not our expertise,” Mooney told me, and the most the organization can do is offer incentives for good behavior. Chiampas added that parents need to intervene and do what’s best for their child if a club team is too demanding.
More can be done. Instead of imposing policies that revolve around building a strong national team, regardless of the impact on ordinary players, U.S. Soccer could establish rules that serve more kids (and still cultivate top-tier talent). For example, it could reverse itself and require teams to be formed on the school calendar, so that classmates can continue to play together. It could also use its platform to discourage early specialization and to encourage players to take part in multiple sports, even through high school.
Parents, too, can reassert their authority and insist that their own children not play one sport year-round, especially when their kids are constantly exhausted, sidelined with nagging injuries, and devoid of unscheduled time. “If the sport has knocked out the family environment and nothing else is happening, and others in the family are suffering from the lack of attention, then summon up the courage to say, ‘We’re a family, and we’re not doing this anymore,’” Levine said. “All the things that seem so life-altering when they’re younger—when they get older, you think, That didn’t make much difference,” she added.
Those who care about soccer in the United States could learn something from Belgium. Eighteen years ago, Belgium’s national football (the European term for soccer) team lost in the first round of the World Cup. It was a staggering failure, which prompted the national director of coach education, Kris Van der Haegen, to overhaul the way they trained football coaches. The main principle of the new approach was to put the players first, before coaches or teams, and to “create an environment of freedom” that restored the game’s creativity and fun. In 2015, Belgium became the world’s top-ranked team. “When things are going well, people don’t want to listen,” Van der Haegen said during an interview. The loss “was the perfect moment to get everyone around the table and ask what we were doing wrong.”
