Ricky’s Review Roundup: ‘The Penthouse’, ‘Held’, and ‘Vanquish’ Review
The Penthouse A man covering up a crime assumes a nosy neighbor may have seen what he did. He turns the neighbor’s lives upside down to keep his secret. But is there more to his motive? The introduction to the Penthouse was done well, setting the sight, the idea of the location, and how it will play a factor in what is about to come. Although the film feels very low-budget, it is, the film…

HELD - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Magnet Releasing
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Emma (Awbrey) and Henry's (Johnson) marriage is losing its spark. In an effort to reconnect, they vacation to a remote high-end rental, complete with automated smart house features and integrated security. However, after suspecting a nighttime intruder they decide to flee, only to become forcibly trapped inside by the automated security system. Emitting from the house, an unknown 'Voice' watches their every move through an array of hidden cameras, revealing an intimate and unsettling knowledge of their relationship. While the situation grows increasingly brutal, Emma and Henry must work together to uncover the truth and find a way out before it's too late.
REVIEW: In order to discuss elements of HELD there will be some spoilers. No major reveals, but some plot reveals will be addressed.
Given all that has been in the zeitgeist these past two years it is with little wonder that some of these issues should filter into entertainment. While you might see words like thriller, psychological, etc., just to describe these films almost all of them will include horror. It mostly likely begins in 2004 with “SAW” and the question of justice, which went on to spawn a franchise that some dubbed “torture porn.”
Then there is the 2020 film written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, “Antebellum.” The hero is an Africian American female civil rights and empowerment speaker who is abducted and taken to a modern working plantation with all the trappings of the Southern Confederacy and its atrocities. It’s a chilling tale that addresses many contemporary issues in a terrifying tale. As entertainment I would be hard pressed to say there was anything “entertaining” about it. In a conspiracy theory riddled and fake news world we live in it is horrifying to consider that something like this could happen. If there are people who can believe in “PizzaGate,'' or the election was stolen, why couldn’t there be an operational confederate plantation somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon line where unspeakable atrocities are taking place. It is a nightmare of our times given life in the cinema.
Now there is HELD. We meet Emma and Henry who we think are taken prisoner in this luxury smarthouse. As they fight for their survival, the film makes a hard left when their captor makes an error and Emma uncovers the truth behind their situation. They are not being held captive and everything she thinks she knows is wrong. Henry has engaged the services of a company called Eden. Their promise is to recondition a wife so that she becomes a more docile, subservient, “housewife.” The mysterious voice is Henry’s accomplice in this charade to break Emma. The place they are in is only one of the numerous locations throughout the globe to aid husbands in transforming their spouse. Henry is not simply after the mind control package but he wants some hard evidence to use against Emma so she remains loyal.
Emma does overcome adversity and so some might consider HELD an anti-misogynistic horror film, especially in this era of the METOO movement. Again I’m not so sure. Although it is Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing who direct, it is written by the film’s female star, Jill Awbrey. So the film does have a feminie perspective. They put Emma through an ordeal, but here it is psychological and physical abuse. I found it painful as my family was raised with strong values and respect for women, and there were holidays where we gave of our time at women’s shelters. From a purely unemotional standpoint I get and understand what they are doing. However, is it entertainment? While it is a bitter pill to swallow, I did find it a bit disingenuous when Henry and the accomplice turn into these bumbling fools who begin to make numerous errors allowing Emma to best them. I think Emma deserved a bit better.
Held has an excellent cast, and I applaud Jill Awbrey for her acting and screenplay. There are some great effects, some excellent editing, the house is an amazing location, and the score by Richard Breakspear is extremely effective. Everything about the film draws the viewer in to take them on a harrowing cinematic journey.
HELD is a great film, a powerful viewing experience, but how do you recommend it? It certainly isn’t a Friday night dinner, popcorn, and a date movie. There are going to be some conversations after screening HELD. And therein lies the rub. HELD is not a film a viewer should go into totally blind to what they are about to experience, They need to be prepared. So I’m not sure if it is entertainment. It also left me with the nagging thought that if these filmmakers could imagine this might there be something like this actually in the world. Who wouldn’t think that at least once given our crazy times. While there are certainly many angles they could use to spinoff a sequel, I can only hope they move onto another, different story.

'La Momia (2017)', un inicio de 'Dark Universe' un tanto fallido.
El comienzo de la saga ‘Dark Universe’ se queda sin demasiado fuelle. Sagas. Está claro que si eres actor en Hollywood y no formas parte de alguna de las veinticinco mil saga que hay actualmente en marcha, es que no eres un actor importante. Superhéroes, adaptaciones o remakes, todo es susceptible de convertirse en una franquicia millonaria, y la última en apuntarse al carro ha sido Universal.…

THE MUMMY (2017)
Starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Russell Crowe, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, Simon Atherton, Stephen Thompson, James Arama, Matthew Wilkas, Sohm Kapila, Sean Cameron Michael, Rez Kempton, Erol Ismail, Selva Rasalingam, Shanina Shaik and Javier Botet.
Screenplay by David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie and Dylan Kussman.
Directed by Alex Kurtzman.
Distributed by Universal Pictures. 107 minutes. Rated PG-13.
As Tom Cruise’s flailing attempts to stay relevant as a leading man become more desperate, we end up with crap like this.
Once upon a time he was a smart, varied actor, as good in comedy as drama, action as fantasy. However, long ago he settled into a groove – making action films which stubbornly refuse to capture an audience. (Included in this long, not overly distinguished list are Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, Night & Day, Valkyrie, The Last Samurai and many more.) The only moderately popular films he can put his name to now seem to be the endless Mission Impossible sequels (all of which have done fairly well, but aren't blockbusters) and the Jack Reacher series (again, only moderately successful).
Even though he became a star in a comedy – Risky Business – he has not done a funny film since Jerry Maguire in 1996 (unless you count his overrated cameo in Ben Stiller's awful Tropic Thunder). Every once in a blue moon, he'll take an adventurous or interesting supporting role (Magnolia, Rock of Ages), but mostly he is stuck on the action-adventure turnstile.
Sadly, no one is willing to pull Tom aside and point out that he's gotten a little too old for this kind of action hero fodder. So here he goes, trying to jump start a new franchise that has almost no shot of catching on. Odd that anyone would consider The Mummy relevant. It was an anachronism when Brendan Fraser was doing it 15 years ago. It was an anachronism when Scooby-Doo was running away from it in a spooky museum on Saturday morning cartoons. It was an anachronism when Abbott and Costello met it. Hell, the last time it probably was not an anachronism was when Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney, Jr. were playing the role in the classic Universal horror films.
Of course, this is a newfangled "mummy" who isn't exactly bandaged head to toe, stumbling forward with his hands outstretched. She is a hot female mummy whose bandages create a form-hugging catsuit and she has awesome magical powers beyond shambling forward.
Her story is conveyed to us through a long and overly-complicated introduction; one complete with ancient British knights, Egyptian pharaohs, Gods and monsters.
The beautiful mummy is Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), an Egyptian princess who sees her succession to the throne disappear when her father has a son late in his life with his second wife. When she realizes that she will lose her birthright to rule, she makes a deal with Set – the God of the dead – to kill her father, his wife and newborn son. In return, she will get immortality and powers beyond belief. However, she is captured before she and her chosen vessel for Set can consummate their dark pact. Therefore, the Egyptians mummify her alive and bury her hundreds of miles away is a secluded crypt in Mesopotamia (now Iraq), where she will be imprisoned forever.
Yeah, right.
Cruise plays Nick Mason here, a military mercenary who is a hot-shot soldier, but who supplements his income by finding and stealing ancient artifacts to sell on the black market. He steals a map from a gorgeous scientist named Jenny (Annabelle Wallis) during a one-night stand, and ends up fighting Iranian troops with his less-than-willing partner Vail (Jake Johnson).
An American airstrike later, Ahmanet's secret tomb is discovered, but the Army and Jenny are back on the case. (Jenny slaps Nick and publicly questions his prowess in bed, so you know they will be falling in love tout de suite.) Vail is possessed by the evil and is eventually killed, then he essentially becomes the Griffin Dunne character in An American Werewolf in London, an undead former best buddy no one else can see who pops up in odd places and offers the hero advice and wisecracks while he quickly decomposes before our eyes.
Then Ahmanet causes the plane carrying the sarcophagus to crash in London, right by the hiding place of an ancient relic dagger needed to turn Nick into the immortal Set. Jenny and Nick are the only survivors of the crash.
Jenny introduces Nick to the head of the secretive agency that wrangles monsters and evil in the world. It turns out to be Russell Crowe playing Henry Jekyll (of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde fame, because... why not?) The stories of the Mummy and Jekyll have nothing to do with each other – different source material, different eras, different locations. The only thin membrane of connection they have is they were both classic Universal monster films, but apparently that is enough, Universal seems to want to put together a literary universe like Marvel's comic one. Apparently, they have forgotten the quick crash and burn of another film that tried that trick, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which coincidentally also featured Jekyll and Hyde.
The story moves on competently enough, I suppose, but sadly it all tends to be underwhelming. In fact, the special effects, especially of armies of the undead shimmying dangerously in attack, are somewhat laughable.
It is not likely The Mummy is going to revive Tom Cruise’s sputtering career. And frankly, he was kind of silly if he thought it would.

La Mummia
Regista: Alex Kurtzman
Cast: Tom Cruise (Nick Morton), Sofia Boutella (Ahmanet), Annabelle Wallis (Jenny Halsey), Russell Crowe (Dr. Henry Jekyll), Jake Johnson (Sergente Vail), Courtney B.Vance (Colonnello Greenway), Marwan Kenzari (Malik), Javier Botet (Set), Selva Rasalingam (Re Menehptre), Dylan Smith (Lorenzo Montanari), Rez Kempton (Foreman), Chasty Ballesteros (Kira Lee).
Genere: avventura, azione, fantastico, orrore.

Asif Khan will be familiar to London audiences primarily as an actor, but in Combustion, he proves to be as adept a playwright as a performer. With this new work, he joins a small but growing canon of writers offering a counter-narrative to an increasingly shrill chorus of Islamaphobic and anti-Muslim rhetoric. Fundamentally, the play grapples with what has become a defining feature of the British Muslim experience: complicity. Does silence confirm your collusion? Does speaking up qualify your betrayal?
Shaz (Beruce Khan), as devout a businessman as he is a Muslim, works hard to grow his burgeoning car mechanic’s garage while supporting his widowed mother and university student sister Samina (Shireen Farkhoy). His two employees, Ali (Rez Kempton) and Faisal (Mitesh Soni), respect their boss, working with varying degrees of diligence and competence in an atmosphere of jovial camaraderie. And yet, as ‘normal’ and run-of-the-mill as their Bradford existences seem, their lives are – despite themselves – deeply politicised. Their sunset prayers for Ramadan are parenthesised by discussions of Pakistani men guilty of raping underaged white girls; Samina’s daily walk to and from class is an exercise in dread as she averts the outraged glares of those who wordlessly protest her hijab; Shaz’s engagement to the girl of his dreams suffers the consequences of his sister’s reluctant celebrity as Bradford’s own prophet of peace.
Thus Khan cleverly exposes the awkward position the Muslim community is forced to adopt. On the one hand, they are expected to be quiescent, integrated, and functional members of society; on the other, that self-same quiescence must be loud enough to prove their disjunction from the perpetually prohibitive definitions of ‘radical Islam’. As such, all four of the Asian characters find themselves trapped both by the vicissitudes of Western expectation, and the necessities of “being a good Muslim”, itself the source of vigorous debate within the play. Never is this more tangibly illustrated than in the literal cage the characters weave in and out of at the back of the stage, innovatively designed by Mila Sanders to double up as the back wall of a mechanic’s garage.
Nevertheless, Khan is careful neither to consecrate the Muslim community nor vilify British society. Shaz’s patriarchal tyranny is an unresolved hangover from his Pakistani heritage, just as Ali’s professed piety cannot prevent him from succumbing to darker appetites. Meanwhile, the only white character, Andy – invested with intelligent emotional range by Nigel Hastings – isn’t a crudely drawn English Defence League ogre, but a man capable of incremental transformation.
The directing style is bold, and Nona Shepphard has forgone any pretense of naturalism, choosing instead to accentuate the necessity of the discussion by the immediacy of the performances. In a production that places so much emphasis on scrutiny and observation (the actors never leave the stage, lurking instead in the background, eyeing the audience from behind bars) Shepphard’s gamble pays off, emphasising the perilous pageantry Muslims are expected to engage in. Farkhoy, in particular, stands out, embracing the exaggerated swagger the director has imposed: her Samina is urgent and dignified, a soap-box rabble-rouser played with the infectious exigency of a woman torn between cultures. Also beautifully depicted is Soni’s Faisal, who eschews simplistic comic characterisation by investing his ‘fool’ with enough integrity and sincerity to make his trajectory the most edifying by play’s end.
It’s impossible to watch this play without thinking of Spike Lee’s 1989 classic Do The Right Thing, in which a culturally disparate Brooklyn neighbourhood finally bursts into febrile conflict on the hottest day of the year. So too in Combustion, as the fever of protest sweeps through this Bradford community, the characters are forced to confront their ideologies if they are to prevent the tinderbox from igniting. Shepphard and her team encourage the audience to avoid the pitfalls of homogenisation, highlighting the particularities of individuals over the conformity of community. Indeed, whether it be the dangerously ill-informed populism of world leaders, or simply the idle chit-chat of proto-Nationalists in your local pub, there is palpable and perhaps understandable apprehension about Muslim integration in Western society. Combustion offers one very clear, very definitive solution: dialogue.
Review by Ziad Samaha
Set in his home city in the month of Ramadan, Combustion is the first full-length play by Bradford-born Asif Khan, a new comic drama set in a local garage in the lead-up to a march by far-right nationalists. Following its run at Tara Theatre, Combustion will transfer directly to Arcola Theatre before a UK tour.
Khan made his mark as an actor in the ensemble cast of Snookered (Tamasha/Bush) and performed in Tara Arts’ recent Paradise of the Assassins as well as Love, Bombs and Apples at Arcola Theatre and its UK Tour. As a writer, Khan has recently been named in the recent BBC New Talent Hotlist 2017. He is a member of the Tamasha Playwrights Group, and has been commissioned to write a full-length play with Tamasha. Combustion was selected as one of six new plays for the Arcola Theatre’s play WROUGHT#2 Festival, 2014.
In Combustion, racists plan to march through the Bradford during Ramadan, inflaming local tensions. Meanwhile Shaz, a local garage mechanic, desperately tries to keep his business running smoothly so he can marry well. In this volatile environment, Shaz’s sister Samina is determined to make her voice heard.
The cast will include Mitesh Soni, known to Tara audiences for performances in Macbeth and Paradise of the Assassins, Beruce Khan who performed in Tara’s co-production with the National Theatre, The Black Album, Rez Kempton, recently seen in Little Revolution at the Almeida and Shireen Farkhoy, who has appeared at the Arcola as part of the Dare to Dream short play evening. The cast is completed by Nigel Hastings, who recently won plaudits for his performance in And then come the Nightjars.
