Fraser was born on December 3, 1968, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Canadian parents Carol Mary (née Généreux) and Peter Fraser. He is the youngest of their four sons.

Fraser's film work slowed from the late 2000s to mid-2010s due to the poor box office performances of many of his films, and various health and personal problems, including the fallout from a sexual assault committed against him in 2003 by Philip Berk, the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Fraser branched into television with roles in the Showtime drama The Affair (2016–2017), the FX series Trust (2018), and the Max series Doom Patrol (2019–2023). His film career was revitalized by roles in Steven Soderbergh's No Sudden Move (2021) and Darren Aronofsky's The Whale (2022). Fraser's starring role as a morbidly obese gay man in the latter earned him critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Actor, becoming the first Canadian to win this category.

Got into an argument with my roommate over Dastan lol. She said he was the white savior and I was racist

I stand in what i have told you yesterday. A movie can have problematic elements and that doesn't make you as a person racist.

If your roomate found elements that she considered problematic in Prince of Persia, that is ok. What is not ok is calling you racist about it.

People have the ríght to speak about the flaws they find on the movie or the character of Dastan, what they can't do is making personal claims about your persona based on that.

Now on the particular topic of your argument with your roomate

Let's go back to history of cinema. I can tell you about one of the most blatant cases of the " white savior" trope:

Tom Cruise in " The Last Samurai". I bring it cause it's obvious and people have already talk about it. This case is the poster example of the trope. Although i don't remember much about the movie, it did caused controversy.

However, that's not where i want to go with this. Do you know who else, if you stretch it far enough, could also be accused of being a " white savior"? Rick O' Connel from The Mummy, one of the most AWESOME heroes that the fantasy-adventure genre ever created.

Can a character have attributes that can be, in certain contexts, problematic, and still be awesome? OF FUCKING COURSE!

If your roomate thinks Dastan is problematic, she can keep believing that. However, that doesn't make him any less of an awesome fantasy heroe. And, what it is more important, she can't speak of you as if your media consumption determinates who you are.

I promise you, it doesn't. That is some marketing bullshit online activism unfortunately fell for. Capitalism has to keep selling in an era where everyone acts like proud anti-marketings. Companies ( in this case , entertainment companies) found a way to catch the people that claim themselves against them.

As i told you before, you can't buy morals and ethics. Enjoy your media without worrying for keeping it pure. Mainstream media would never be %100 clean. I'm absolutely sure that your roomate also consumes stuff that is problematic in some extent. I bet that if she was in your place and someone would find a questionable element on something she likes, she wouldn't like to be called awfull things on wrong assumptions about herself over it.

Entertainment is not about being progressive saints. You don't need to prove yourself to anyone based in the movies you like to watch.
