Get Back Rewatch 55 Years On: Day Nine
Here’s the thing. Like, on one hand, Paul loves teaching. But on the other hand, I honestly think he’d be a terrible teacher. He’s genuinely trying to explain songwriting to this kid, and all I’m getting is that I should be able to just look at a piano and it’ll give me whatever I want. “So it’s really just . . .” *plays Martha My Dear* “. . . and from there, you know, like, um, there’s no – unless you stop yourself – there’s no stopping yourself.” Yes, thank you, Professor McCartney. Very informative. Good thing you’re a gorgeous genius because not a word of that lecture made any sense.
Tumblr media
Seriously I am BEGging someone to write Paul and Ringo in the 20s as a cabaret duo! With Paul’s talents being songwriting, slutting it up, piano, and vocals and Ringo’s talents being tap-dancing, ventriloquist dummy impersonation, with the occasional piano, vocals, and sly winks. Maybe they meet George and John through organized crime, idk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“They don’t just sort of come in your head, kind of thing?” “Yeah, sure. Fact, I had one this morning.” You know. As one does.
See, even Ringo’s on board with my plan. “Let’s make a silent movie.” And Paul. “In a club. That’s it. We’re in a band. We’re in a band, but we sell drugs.” And now they're stringing Paul up just for kicks. Maybe they could join the circus!
Literally the minute John starts being silly, Paul gets this fond look on his face and you can see the wheels turning like “quick, think of a way to get close to him.” And John’s into it. But they keep doing this seesaw thing and I can’t help but think how reminiscent it is of their dynamic as a whole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I see you’ve given up smoking, Richie.” “Yes, I have.” Reminds me of that classic, “I don’t even smoke,” thing. Seems like five-hundred years ago.
PLEASE tell me Peter Sellers and Ringo had a torrid love affair during the filming of The Magic Christian. The way Peter touches Ringo’s hair and his face! Ringo being a gentleman and getting Peter a chair! And I mean there’s plenty of queer coding between them in the film.
But also laughing my ass off at Peter’s reaction to their song-titles/lyrics/gibberish/other references code.
Tumblr media
Yoko, you’re stone-cold and hilarious. “Or what we haven’t.” I honestly have mad respect for her complete disregard/disdain for the Beatles and their art only because that’s how they treat hers for the most part. But girl. You’re married to one of them. He genuinely does love them and what he does with them and you’ve got to respect that or go find someone else, you know?
Also, Paul does Not appreciate the attitude. “Or we’ll just sort of sit here and allow ourselves to be embarrassed. ‘Number nine . . .”
Tumblr media
Aaand, just like that, Peter Sellers “must be off.” He lasted all of 1 minute 26 seconds. Weak. George and Ringo lasted fifteen years.
MLH is literally that annoying person that asks you a serious question about yourself just so he can use you as a segue to talk about his problems.
John: just recovering from the day, you know. Yoko: from the night. John: embarrassed (you have no right, dude, you literally played your sex tape for everyone like two weeks ago) Paul: Did not want that image, thanks very much.
It actually KILLS me though that we’ll never understand their code. Paul and Ringo will take it to their graves and no one else knows it and any footage like this we’ve got, and any code songs, will just be mostly uninterpretable for all time.
Okay these few minutes here are soooo special to me. It’s John at his peak lovely, sweet, gentle, kind self. He makes a joke at which Paul can only nod darkly which makes John realize just how bad of a place Paul’s in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul wants them to get to work “achieve something every day.” But John knows he’s not in a good headspace to work and it’ll be shit and then Paul will spiral even more. So, he turns up the humor until Paul is sufficiently cheered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, he says. “Guitars? I thought that’s what they do.” And Paul’s stammering. “Oh, that is what they do, but–” John stands up, does a little head-tilt toward the instruments. “Come on, I’ll even show you about half a song I was writing. Come on.” That last in the tenderest, most coaxing voice. It’s just soooo. Like. We talk a lot about Paul ‘handling’ John, and he did. But John sure knows how to handle Paul.
Tumblr media
I SO wish they’d have done something with “Madman”. It’s so fun!! Every single song in this era I will go to bat for, no question.
Ringo’s little hug for Paul!!!! I can’t.

Lewisohn vs. Shepherd
I'm still at work on the whole Kim Bennett thing, but here's a quick Lewisohn vs. post to spice things up. Actually, the book from which I was cross-referencing was due at the library, so I started work on this, quickly realized the source was also readily availble online, but decided to finish it anyway.
The source at hand is Jean Shepherd’s October 28th, 1964 interview with the Beatles, published in the February 1965 issue of Playboy. You can find a transcribed version here or a scanned copy here. It’s a great, quick read - seven pages sparkling with Beatles wit and a concerted effort by George to convince the interviewer he's in love with Ringo. Small tw for transphobia in the form of a tired pronoun joke at the expense of April Ashley.
Tune In pulls three quotes from Shepherd's interview. Two of them are below the cut - their are minor changes (one exceedingly minor) to those quotes, but the first quote I'll address is taken wildly out of context. It's not the most offensive distortion of history that Lewisohn has put forward, but its maddeningly blatant - and pointless.
Tune In 26-20 vs. Shepherd 1965, p.54
Tumblr media
The quote of interest is highlighted in green, but I included the preceding paragraph because the context matters greatly here. The Beatles & Brian were down in the dumps, having struck out with every record company with any semblance of artistic merit. Lewisohn highlights that John and Paul in particular were down in the dumps, but that “their young friend George stayed optimistic. He rallied them, he showed them that while they might be thinking the worst, he was remaining hopeful.” His evidence for this is the quote highlighted in green, in which John says Brian and George knew they would make it big.
Well. Let’s check the source.
Tumblr media
If you look at the quote, once again in green, it’s almost correct—Lewisohn drops “our manager”, but it’s close by Tune In’s standards. Take a look at what’s around the quote, and you’ll see it’s taken wildly out of context. John isn’t talking about George’s confidence in the Beatles ability to score a record contract in 1962; he is unambiguously referring to George’s confidence that the Beatles will succeed in America in 1964. And that confidence didn’t stem from “the Beatles’ mantra” that “Something’ll turn up”—George thought they’d be successful in the states because he was aware of their U.S. record sales.
The thing that gets me here is that it’s so unnecessary. As a historian writing for a general audience, the Beatles must be a dream: you have a core group of four complex, interesting, musically gifted people whose personal and artistic growth played out in the public eye, exhaustively documented. They were surrounded by a supporting cast of vibrant characters to root for or revile, who all played a role in a story brimming with friendship, romance, rivalry, wit, and tragedy. There's no reason to rewrite history for the Beatles - their story can be both factually correct and narratively compelling, yet Lewisohn joins a storied list of authors who have felt the need to gild the lily.
What does this add to the Beatles story? How does it benefit the narrative to portray George Harrison as a plucky kid from an afterschool special, cheering on his elders with unflagging optimism when things look bleak? It’s trite, and it’s fake. It's not the Beatles.
This isn’t the most earth-shattering act of historical revisionism Lewisohn has committed to print, but its brazenness is galling. In the introduction to Tune In, Lewisohn states, “I’ve wanted a history of deep-level inquiry where the information is tested accurate, and free of airbrushing, embellishment and guesswork, written with an open mind and even hands, one that unfolds lives and events in context and without hindsight, the way they occurred…” And yet we get this. He knowingly took this quote two years and a whole Atlantic Ocean out of context, and he had the audacity to tout his book as “tested accurate, and free of airbrushing, embellishment and guesswork.”
He's pissing on our feet and telling us it's raining, folks.
Tune In 29-4 vs. Shepherd 1965, p.56
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An impressive number of little deletions and changes for such a small quote.
Tune In 33-1 vs. Shepherd 1965, p.54
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one almost isn’t worth mentioning. The only change is the emphasis removed from Ringo’s “them” in the original quote.

‘Rediscovering the photographs I took in my early 20s inevitably makes me reflect on much larger questions. I think it’s the same as it would be for anyone, that when you look at pictures of yourself when you were younger – in my case, a lot younger – there are a lot of emotions. On the most basic level, you think, “Boy, didn’t I look good?”, but we all look beautiful when we’re young, and I’m proud to have been through that and to now have the privilege of revisiting so many of those moments. I realise that many people get sad when they pore through old family albums, but I don’t feel that sense of loss, even though quite a few of the people who are portrayed here have died.’
‘It’s not so much a feeling of loss but a joy in the past. When I look back and think, I have to say, “Wow” – we did all that, and we were just kids from Liverpool. And here it is in the photographs. Boy, how great does John look? How handsome is George and how cool is Ringo, wearing that funny French hat?’
Paul McCartney talking about his photo book ‘1964: Eyes of the Storm’ and being completely normal, The Guardian, 3rd June 2023

George taking a photograph from the side of the stage at a Crosby Stills Nash & Young concert at Wembley Stadium in September 1974 (photo by Gijsbert Hanekroot/Redferns/Getty Images); with David Crosby in 1967 (photo by Leslie Bryce); George and Stephen Stills in the studio, 1970 (scanned from the CD liner notes for Doris Troy‘s Apple Records album).
“I first met George in 1959. We kept in touch throughout our lives, meeting up over the years. I miss him very much. He was a good friend. He was a gentleman, and I don’t say that lightly.” - Graham Nash, Liverpool Echo, November 28, 2011
“Some of the stuff we did in the studio [for Troy’s self-titled Apple album], I’d be messing around on the piano and somebody would walk over and say, what is that? I’d say, this is what I got so far. And they’d go, okay, try this, try this, and that’s how come on the [songwriting credits] you see Ringo [Starr] on some of it, Stephen Stills on some of it, and George.” - Doris Troy, Unknown Legends of Rock ‘n’ Roll (1998)
"I’d worked on a Doris Troy album for Apple. And I was hanging out with George Harrison, Ringo and Eric Clapton, among others when I made my first solo album, Stephen Stills. Eric was coming by the house for a tickle, and a lot of work got done in between a two-year party at Ronnie Wood’s place. Not that Ronnie ever invited me. Going to Apple while The Beatles were breaking up was heavy for a kid from Florida. I’m in a studio with the fucking Beatles? Huh? It was very affirming when they told me: 'Go ahead and do your thing.' But then they’d say: 'But don’t get too successful. This is a small island, there’s not enough room at the top for everyone.'" - Stephen Stills, Louder, May 12, 2014
“George would invite me over for dinner. Actually, George was the one I connected with the most. He was my best friend in that band, although I'm still really good friends with Ringo.” - David Crosby, Music Radar, February 8, 2014
“[George] was my favorite Beatle” - David Crosby, Twitter, February 20, 2015
Q: “memory of George Harrison?” David Crosby: “Wonderful man” - Twitter, March 22, 2015
“They were much more real than we thought, and they were much nicer to us. And particularly George, who’s like, was just the nicest guy you could ask for. He was tough and he was smart and he didn’t kiss your butt, but he was — he was a kind human being, right? I became friends with George to the point where he started talking to me about stuff that mattered. I had just been turned on to Ravi Shankar. Somebody gave me his record, and I had it in my suitcase. And I gave it to George. And that had repercussions. He goes to India because he loves Indian music, and he meets this teacher, right? The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. […] And I wanted to tell him, ‘Take it with a grain of salt.’ Hell, I wanted to tell him, ‘Take it with a whole shaker full of salt,’ I wanted to say that to George, I wanted to say, ‘Be skeptical.’ […] I was afraid I’d blow the friendship, absolutely. Because he was so valuable to me, and the guy was — he knew everything that I needed to know, he was doing what I wanted to do, he was nice about it, he was, like, my hero. So I couldn’t tell him the truth. Well, so I wrote him a song, I wrote him a song called ‘Laughing.’” - Storytime With Seth Rogen, October 12, 2021 (x) (x)

Green Haired Swordsman Meets Green-eyed Monster
*In the days following the Raid on Onigashima, Luffy and Zoro were nearly comatose from their exertion and wounds. Now, after a week, Zoro just woke up and was greeted with a sight he hadn't expected.*
Zoro: My head... damn I need some booze. Robin:I can get you some in just a minute. Zoro: Wh- Robin, the hell are you doing here? Where are the others? Robin: Luffy woke up about an hour ago and ran off, and the rest of our nakama had follow after him to make sure he didn't destroy anything in his search for food. Zoro: Heh... yeah, that sounds like him. Still doesn't answer why you stayed, though. Robin: *clears her throat and looks away* Well, someone had to make sure you weren't alone whenever you woke up, and to explain the situation so you didn't wander around in confusion. And I... drew the short straw. Zoro: Well then, I guess I appreciate the courtesy. So what situation needs explaining? Luffy beat Kaido, obviously, but what else happened? Robin: *smiles at how immediately confident Zoro is in their victory* Well, the two of you have been passed out from your wounds for a week, and in that time Momonosuke-sama revealed his presence to the country and declared himself the Shogun. I almost didn't believe what I was seeing, but it seems Shinobu-chan used her power to age him up by 20 years. Fuhuhuhu~ Zoro: Ah, so the brat reclaimed his clan's place on top. Good for him I guess, hopefully Kin'emon and the others can help him get a handle on that. The age thing sounds wild, but I did see him flying around as a full sized dragon so that tracks. Anything else? Robin: Um... yes, actually, there was something I wanted to talk to you about, Zoro-kun. I suppose you mentioned it in passing before the raid but... you spent some time with Momonosuke-sama's sister, didn't you? Zoro: Hmm? Ah, yeah, I was with Hiyori for a couple days. Robin: *eyes narrowed and glowering a bit* Yes, and it must have been quite an eventful period. When she heard you were incapacitated, she insisted on coming to see you. She begged Chopper to let her help with your treatment, and more than a few times tried to nestle beside you for comfort. You two must have... bonded quite a bit... for her to be so close and caring towards you. Zoro: Yeah, you could probably say that. She let me claim Enma after that weapons bandit took Shusui, I saved her from Kid's first mate while he was running around as that serial killer, we slept together... Robin: I'm sorry, you did what?!?! With a woman you knew for less than a week?? I know I've been coy and playful in the past, but I didn't realize you'd find someone else this quickly. Zoro: The hell do you mean? We just- oh for the love of... I mean we shared a bed, and I didn't even ask for it. We were in a shack in Ringo, which was pretty damn cold, and she was helping treat a nasty stab wound I got from Kid's buddy. I was trying to get some rest to help it heal, and I guess while I slept she draped her coat over me for a blanket and then went to sleep next to me to share body heat. We had that kid with the big eyes who laughed a lot with us too, and nothing lewd happened. I mean, she offered me her body, but I wasn't interested in that. Robin: Oh... I see. I'm sorry for getting so... worked up. I guess I just... Zoro: Thought I'd gotten laid with the first girl that offered? That's the pervy cook's thing. Robin: Well she is the Oiran of the Flower Capital. Zoro: Ah, so she's a professional at seduction and I'd be in an elite crowd for getting with her. I'm not into having sex for the glory. Robin: But this is the country your family descends from! Surely it reminded you of home, and you might have felt something special in the prospect of a woman who shares your culture?? *She's growing more exasperated, and hating the words even as she says them because they're justifying why he should be with another woman* Zoro: I never cared much about my village being founded by a Wano samurai, and I'm happy with the culture I'm part of now, being a pirate. Why do you actually care so much about this? Robin: Because clearly she loves you!! Zoro: *Sigh* Robin, I know she does. And it's flattering, she's a very pretty woman, but she's just not my type.

(01:01:32 maybe the photo he wanted was the ‘ghost’ photo? he seems to be more down on the ground about that’s possible)
(01:01:46 oh!! maybe the head injury ‘cleared’ his head so he can think more clearly?)
(01:02:24 a g-g-g-ga-ghost! hahahaha… sorry)
(01:02:28 hopefully we can see the photo, or the spooky of the ‘unknown’ is scarier. allowing us to imagine what scary thing is shown in the image, because everyone has different tolerances to different things)
(01:02:40 never-mind 😭 spoke too soon!)
(01:02:46 pffftttt! hahahahaha, hahahahahahahahaha!!! thanks to that zoom hahhahaha i thought it was a normal photo pffft so thanks! hahahaha)
(01:03:00 oh lord she’s become a ghost hunter hahaha! with that look maybe she’s the one behind it! hahaha! her voice suits the lazy fill of how this documentary would’ve been made if it where a real one!
… i fill a bit bad. i keep pausing to type, it’s probably keeping from getting sucked into the story! sorry! but i’m going to continue doing this!)
(01:03:08 burn the photo?)

(01:06:18 👀☕️)
(01:07:08 it is nice to see that the children are more happy! but i have a feeling Rie is about to rock the boat. maybe the older siblings have a plan or something to mess with the new dad?)
(01:07:30 … what a waste of food. and i was right)
(01:08:02 i feel like i shouldn’t be watching this…
since it’s real acting though these fight seems are a bit funny looking since the kicks/punches look weak but the father is good at acting hurt)
(01:08:37 EYH!! oh my… that one he definitely didn’t actually touch her, but still bloody hell!)
(01:09:12 …pfft… sorry i just can’t help but think about the cameraman standing up close a personal at this scene through his camera lens being like ‘good sh!t’ while his face stays in moved)
(01:09:22 …hmmm oof line… i’ll keep watching but i do think this father isn’t as innocent as he seems)
(01:09:44 …. now i feel bad QAQ)
(01:11:00 how much do you how much do you bet that she’s gone missing just poped out from existence like the father?)
(01:11:18 maybe call the police or something?)
(01:12:28 don’t push her of the bridge! don’t! i see you! don’t you dare!)
(01:012:40 i was about to say you don’t need to apologise… but they both should really, neither are really in the right here.)
(01:13:18 wow “you are… Nothing.” wow! i should get that tattooed one me pffft)
(01:14:09 what does this mean?)
(01:14:30 (?) good question)
(01:16:22 awh 😭😭😭)
(01:17:50 i guess she needed the slap of reality? there is still 20 minutes so i’m uneasy)
(01:18:14 MISS!!! it’s not you place! it’s bad enough you’ve filmed all of this, don’t poke your nose into who’s calling who father!!)
(01:19:04 with what money??? you can afford a house but a nice van for a camping trip??
what are you kidnapping them???)
(01:19:22 oh my! that sure was a jump-scare!! was not expecting to see him outside of that room!)
(01:19:30 … wait why does he has his bat with him? does it bring him comfort after facing a traumatic experience so he brings it around with him to feel safe? i don’t know… i feel uneasy again, sorry big brother!)
(01:20:07 so cute!!! heart is melting!!!)
(01:20:28 eh! put both poles in before you bend it! you’re making it harder for yourselves!!)
(01:21:56 omfg lady!! don’t ask such a question! they are two different people, two different fathers! they’d be different so don’t compare them! ehy!
before she asked that though it’s nice to see the children except him! they have seen him put his foot down, so i can see how that gave them some reassurance!)
(01:22:20 awh her smile!! QAQ!!! so precious!)
…. that poor gosh!! 🤢😭 sorry had to skip that
(01:23:24 awh..! to have them all day that T^T i’m not crying you are!)
(01:23:42 pfffft hahahaha then it just pans to her awkwardly/creepily watching from a distance… ha…
maybe she should had a series where she stays with a family for a month and buy the end of the month they are all sawn together with her magic hands)
hehehe!! ✨fire✨
(01:24:08 are they really a family? i feel after all this they’ll be close together and have a bond no? a bit like the weasley family. to act like a family for so long you’d have an emotional connection to them so maybe the joy they’re showing is real?)
tbh i thought the announcement was going to be another child lmao
(01:24:24 maybe the oldest son did have something happen, the way he’s acting makes me think maybe he has something, not in like a mean/bad way.
it nice that he’s being included into the family’s things now :D)
(01:24:55 protect the fire from the rain QAQ)
(01:25:33 i wonder if they planned the weather)
(01:26:15 oh gosh 😭😭😭😭 so precious)
(01:26:27 why am i waving goodbye?)
(01:27:40 what’s going on??)
(01:27:55 oooo that neat! to have the ‘open door’ button on the floor, stops the germs from getting in the hands!
but what about escapees who scroll on the floor and people with no legs/in a wheelchair)
(01:28:30 …. that sight brings back memories)
(01:29:24 … sus … did he push her down so he could get her and her husbands life insurance?)
(01:31:26 maybe that was the ghosts plan, to now keep sending you to the hospital to make you stay in the house. the injuries becoming -worse?- so it’s gets more power and causes you to stay longer and it continues)
(01:31:51 ah! the eldest boy! eating with the family! very proud!)
(01:33:02 awh he’s also out there with the father!
i’m just worried the reason why i watched this was because another youtube video said that there was horror, or something like that and to watch it before the video, maybe i missed something in all this.. if so, oof!)
(01:33:19 pffft nothing to the actor, her dead eyes as selling this… well
01:33:22-24 i guess you could say there is warmth her looking at a family endearingly)

.
“Ted.” Beard’s voice could never be described as particularly forceful— nothing about him really could— but right now he wills it to be clear and strong. “You remember that night I called you, right after I got outta jail?”
Ted forces his way through another shaky breath. “...Yeah.”
It wasn’t right after he got out, really. The first thing he did when he got out was try to make his way home. It wasn’t until after he got the door slammed in his face there, after he tried and failed to find a couch to crash on nearby, after he couldn’t find a job, after he’d spent several miserable weeks sleeping on the streets in the dead of winter— only then did he call up Ted.
“You drove twelve hours round trip that night,” Beard recalls. “All the way up to Peoria then back down again. Just off one phone call.”
Ted’s still hunched over, his hands balled into fists and shaking, but he gives a weak laugh. “Uh-huh. Was a younger man then. Not sure I could pull that kind of all-nighter now.”
Beard pushes on. He has a point to make. “There’s one part about that night that’s always stuck with me. More than the rest, anyway.”
Ted hasn’t stopped shaking, but he manages to lift his head now, looking Beard in the eye. “Yeah?”
“You remember we had the oldies station on to keep you awake. Both of us belting our lungs out to the songs we heard on our parents’ records as kids.”
Ted smiles at that, a real smile, and Beard lets the satisfaction of that bolster him— Ted has always been a sucker for nostalgia. At the time, those old 70s songs they charmed themselves listening to felt like a world away from the present. Now, they’re old enough to start having nostalgia about their own 20-year-old nostalgia. Christ.
He’s never quite been able to put it into words, to Ted or to anyone else, but that night had seemed nothing short of magical to Beard. It had felt like decades since the last time he laughed that hard, watching Ted croon along in his best impression of [some lame 70s artist idk]. He was warm, and with a friend, and even the greasy fast food hamburgers they’d picked up tasted like ambrosia with how hungry he was, and it felt like he was leaving every single ounce of hardship and hurt behind in Peoria as they drove away.
That feeling wouldn’t last in the coming weeks, when Beard struggled and crumbled and the whole thing culminated in that godforsaken stolen car incident. But for that one night, he truly believed it.
Before that night, Beard had always been rather lukewarm on those old 70s songs that accompanied him along in his childhood— most of them were tied to childhood memories, and not all of them were particularly pleasant memories— but even despite that, he and Ted both knew every single word to most of the songs that came on the radio. And the sight of Ted shouting at the top of his lungs along to them, loopy and giggling as they approached five in the morning, just about wiped any bitter taste left out of Beard’s mouth.
“That was a good night,” Ted says now, quietly, his voice shaking with unshed tears. But he’s smiling.
“Yeah,” Beard agrees. “It really was.” He takes a breath. “You know, the part that’s— that’s really stuck with me?”
Ted nods, his smile broadening, already clearly seeing where this was going. “Dolly,” he says simply.
“Bingo, Ringo.” Beard finds it in him to mirror Ted’s growing smile back to him. “God, that was perfect timing.”
Ted laughs. “It really was. I’d have half a mind to think the DJ pulled that one on purpose.”
“I hope he did.”
They’d been on the road, somewhere in the middle of Missouri, when the sun started to rise. Even though they’d been shouting and laughing their way through the night, something about the clouds of pink and orange starting to creep their way over the horizon brought both of the young men to silence. And then, just as the blue of the daytime was starting to take over the purple of night, the most perfect song in the universe began to play on the radio.
It’s been a long, dark night, and I’ve been waiting for the morning…
Ted had broken out into a huge grin. “Aw, man,” he’d said. “I love Dolly.”
Beard hummed along an agreement, but couldn’t bring himself to say much, charmed by the appropriateness of the song. I can see the light of a clear blue morning, Dolly belted out, right as the blue morning did indeed open up in front of the two of them, urging them to leave everything painful behind them. Everything was gonna be alright, and everything was gonna be okay.
“You know,” Beard says, back in the present in the hotel room with Ted. “Now, every time I listen to that song, I always feel twenty-five again. Convinced that all the bad times are over and the world is nothing but my oyster.”
Ted laughs. “Me, too. Somethin’ about music, man. It’s got magic in it.”
“Sure does.” Beard looks down at Ted’s hands. They’re no longer shaking, so Beard takes them in his own.
“Ted,” he starts, his voice more serious-- he’s getting to the crux of it now, and he has to make sure Ted understands. “You know I owe you more than God himself.”
“Oh, come on, now.” Ted tries to slip his hands out of Beard’s grip, but Beard holds fast. “None of that.”
“It’s true.” Beard shakes his head. “But even if it weren’t, you know I’d still be here, yeah? You didn’t owe me anything when you drove straight through the night to pick me up and take me home. Me and Rebecca, and Roy, and everyone else— we’re not doing this out of any kind of obligation, okay? Or pity, or fear, or— or any of that. We’re doing this ‘cause when someone you care about is struggling, you hop in a car— or a plane— and you go to them. Surely you understand that. You have to. You’re the one who taught it to me.”
Beard’s worried he’s misstepped, because Ted’s hands are shaking again, but when he tries to let them go, Ted clings on tighter.
“I’m not used to this being the other way around,” Ted blurts out, and it’s clearly an admission, his eyes blown wide with fear. “I’m supposed to be the one who helps people. Not…”
“Not the one who needs help,” Beard finishes for him. “Yeah, I know, Teddy. I can feel it. But love never flows just one way, does it?”
Ted chuckles lightly. That’s a line he’s used on Beard, multiple times, throughout the past fifteen years. There’s been several times, now, where Beard has twisted himself up in sudden worry that Ted doesn’t understand how much Beard cares about him— not when Ted shows it and says it so easily, and Beard is so quiet about it. But every time he’s come to Ted about it, stumbling his way through half a sentence before his throat chokes up and keeps him from saying the rest, Ted’s been quick to assure him that he knows— after all, he always says, love never flows just one way.
Ted’s head flops down onto Beard’s shoulder, seeming to accept his own words being used against him, and Beard wraps his arms around his friend’s shoulders.
“Teddy,” Ted echoes, muttering it into Beard’s shirt. “Been a long time since you called me that.”
Beard hums into Ted’s hair. “Hm. Sure has.”
The melody to Clear Blue Morning is still bouncing around in Beard’s head. Everything’s gonna be alright.
Ted takes a breath.
It’s gonna be okay.

May 25, 1977 . ended up spending a lot of time with Maureen, including staying at her and Isaac's flat a few odd nites. She is the only person I've met in a real long time that didn't irritate me even once. Not one thing she did ever bothered me. Anyway, on Monday afternoon she took me out to Friar Park to shoot the doorknobs. We picked up her kids and spent a couple of hours wandering around the gardens. What an incredible place that is. They've got all these caves that maze under the gardens. I took pictures of her and the kids. I hope they turn out nice cause I'd like to send her a couple. Afterwards, we went back to the flat and Fabio was there. We all just played around til the wee bours, taking snaps and trying to make a mold of an ashtray for me to give Klaus. It didn't work out but we had fun.
Tivo years later I was back in London for the book, and even though I'd barely spoken to Maureen since Fabio died...
Winkfield 3:15am Fri. 13 Apr 78… ended up going to Henley and then coming back here to visit Maureen. Had a nice afternoon and it ended up with her wanting my # of which I didnt know where I would be staying so she invited me to stay here. I have the flat that's separate from the house and am being treated great by all. She put me up for three weeks at her beautiful country home. It was much quieter than the previous visit when after the day's work everyone would meet at Mo's Mayfair flat for drinks. Then it would be out to dinner and off to the infamous private club Tramp, where one time I suddenly looked up and realized, "oh, that's Pete Townsend who just sat down at our table for a drink and a chat." At Winkfield it was family time, and at one point even Ringo showed up to stay for a while. Friday 20 April 79 ..went to an art store and went crazy on stuff for me and stuff for the kids and Ringo and Maureen... Went home excited to give the gifts, which all enjoyed and really got into. Was like an art school at the house and made me feel really good. Then the night turned into an all-nighter with watching videos and talking to Maureen. Seems I had an unusually large amount of time to spend with Maureen, but I'm certainly not complaining for that.
Maureen had a huge heart and was fiercely loyal. She was quick to tell me that she hated the Starart cover. Even though it was Klaus borrowing from his own design of the Beatles Revolver cover, Maureen felt we were trying to profit off the Beatles fame. She was no longer a Beatle wife but she still had their backs. How could I not love and respect her?

Nishikido Ryo × Cookie!
Hitotoki Kyuukei-Shitsu 2023.12.15 part 2
Nishikido Ryo & comedian Cookie! sat down for a casual chat for "Hitotoki kyuukei-shitsu" on Japan Tobacco's official YouTube where they talked about SNS, hobbies, opinions on work etc
link to part 1 —
Translation below:
In terms of his career Ryo said he is really taking it easy. He admits it was scary at first when he became an independent artist. Cookie said rye must’ve been brave, Ryo said rather than being brave it’s more like taking responsibility if he fails. Even though all the responsibility falls on him, Ryo feels it’s better that way. He feels like his life & career now more healthy
On when Ryo will retire from the entertainment industry
Cookie: how long do u plan to be in this business? Will you continue even when you become an ojisan?
Ryo: To be honest, I think it I’ll be done when they don’t want me anymore. But by that point, I’ll realise it on my own and I’ll withdraw by myself and then live my life doing only what I want to do. Maybe I’m preparing for that now.
3. Ryo does admit he sometimes loses his temper & gets angry. He doesn’t want be angry but admit there times he gets really annoyed & it shows on his face.
4. On when Ryo feels peaceful:-
Cookie: is there anything you do, a thing, a place or an activity that makes calm and peaceful?   Ryo: I think it’s when I go for a walk in the park. When I takes walk with my friend, their spouse and their baby. I felt very peaceful.   Cookie: What about when you’re surfing?  Ryo: It’s really strenuous when you’re in the middle of riding a wave… I feel good after I succeed in riding out a wave. Even in winter, after a shower, I can wear just a t-shirt. I feel satisfied at those times.
5. Ryo on what makes him cry & his views on acting:-
Cookie: I cried while watching the Blue Giants movie. I was so embarrassed crying in front of my kids while they were just eating popcorn. Have you cried recently? Ryo: Well, I don't really cry at sad things anymore. I cry more when I watch wedding videos of people I don’t even know 😆 Cookie: ah, because of other people's happiness? Ryo: I feel that is more touching. Cookie: Do you cry at once when you do a crying scene? Ryo: I can cry right away! Cookie: Some actors really get into their roles, don’t they? Even when they are off-screen. Are you not that type? Ryo: No, I'm not that type lol. Of course there are ways of approaching it, but in my case, even when I’m doing serious filming, I’ll be singing on a music show later that evening 😆
Tumblr media
5. Ryo on cars:-
Cookie: are you particular about cars? Ryo: When I was about 24 years old, I bought a classic Mercedes-Benz car with vertical headlights. I still drive it now Cookie: Like the one in Ringo Sheena’s Tsumi to Batsu music video? Ryo: Hahaha yeah. But when I was in my early 20s, I got a little carried away and bought an Aston Martin. It was a DB9 model. Although I liked it very much… but every time I passed by the exact same car and I got little demotivated 😆, so I switched to a Mercedes Benz that no one seemed to be driving.

The Sunday Mail (Glasgow) - December 20, 1964
WHEN A BEATLE KIDDED THE ‘NEMPEROR’
RAY JONES, former member of The Dakotas, continues ‘My Wild Life With The Pop Groups’
On his way up, somebody christened Brian Epstein the ‘Nemperor,’ after his music firm, NEMS Enterprises. It stuck.
And with his kingly success came kingly trappings - a chauffeured Rolls, a Maserati, a big Belgravia apartment, a listing as one of the ‘Ten Best Dressed Men,’ etc.
Nobody on the inside now calls Epstein’s business NEMS. It’s ‘The Organisation’ - a thing bigger than all of us.
Brian sits at the centre of it all - rich and powerful.
And though his success becomes greater he is still much the same young man whom we first knew in Liverpool, and labelled ‘Mister Elegance.’
Brian hates reprimanding people - and as far as his top earners, the Beatles, go I think he gave up trying long ago!
Organisation
Even when, last July 20, he had me in his office near the London Palladium and told me I had to go I could see he was actually embarrassed by the whole bit.
I almost felt sorry for him - though, as a young married man being sacked from a £120 a week job, I suppose I should have felt sorry for myself.
The Beatles were the only people in the organisation who dared call him ‘Eppie,’ probably because he didn’t like it.
He was Brian or Mr. Epstein to everybody else.
I KNOW THEY WERE FOND OF HIM, AND RESPECTED HIM, BUT THEY OFTEN PULLED HIS LEG.
John Lennon, whom I think of as the most original personality in the Beatles, would say to him: ‘You’re only our agent’ - in that deadpan way of his.
He could always depend on this riling Brian. ‘I am not your agent,’ he would say emphatically, ‘I am your personal representative’ - which he really was.
‘Oh, ah!’ John would say.
John is a real character - with no flies on him. I always had the feeling that he was a good friend to have, but not a man to cross.
He can be scathing to people, but when he takes the mickey its usually good-humoured.
And shrewd! This year, trying to get rid of his old car, John got Brian to contact their New York agent, to see if they’d get more money for the car there - as a car ridden by a Beatle!
JOHN’S ALWAYS COMING UP WITH THE GIMMICKS.
Conscious
Having a drink with him one day I noticed his cuff-link had the name ‘Ron’ on it in big letters.
‘Who’s Ron?’ I asked.
‘Cousin of Jim,’ said John smartly - and flashed the other cuff-link, which did indeed bear the name ‘Jim.’
It was John who came up with the original idea for the Beatles’ Jacket, which swept the country. He had seen something similar in Paris some time before, and liked the idea.
But Epstein and Paul McCartney are the really clothes-conscious members of the outfit.
I always found Paul a nice guy - and the girls’ favourite, of course!
AND OF THE FOUR, THE ONE MOST CONSCIOUS OF THE GROUP’S POPULARITY AND THE NEED TO PROTECT IT.
I was in their dressing-room one day when an argument flared up between John and Paul.
Contrast
They are the driving force of the group and it’s not unnatural - as I well know! for tensions to build up in a group, even the Beatles.
John was picking up steam when he suddenly stopped, and I noticed that Paul was jabbing a finger in my direction and looking at John significantly.
The row ended right there.
Even though I was a fellow NEMS artist, they were taking no chances - following to the letter a Brian Epstein instruction that his groups should never be seen arguing publicly.
I don’t think George Harrison and Ringo Starr ever get much involved in the temperamental clashes of John and Paul.
By show business standards George is a reserved sort of fellow - though in ordinary life I guess he’d be rated a wild-oh!
Somebody once accused George of being ‘anonymous,’ and he retorted: ‘So long as I’m giving my best and getting an equal share of the take I couldn’t care less.’
That’s his attitude, and there’s a lot to be said for it.
Ringo, by contrast, is too busy enjoying the life he lives to have time for rows!
Where his energy comes from, nobody knows - but he loves dancing and being out till all hours. I think he enjoys being a Beatle more than the other three put together!
I suppose when I first heard the Beatles I was about as wrong in my judgement of them as Brian Epstein was right.
Imitation
The Dakotas, at that time, had a polished sound along the same lines as the Shadows, whom we greatly admired.
We thought ourselves the most professional group around in the North country and scoffed when people told us: ‘Wait till you hear the Beatles…’
The Beatles were in Hamburg when we heard that, but the week they came home we had the chance of working with them in the Cavern in Liverpool.
Capacity of that famous cellar was around five hundred, but we quickly found there must have been twice that number when the Beatles were appearing.
THEY MADE THAT STAGE IMMORTAL, IN FACT, IT WAS SOON TO BE CHOPPED UP AND SOLD AT FIVE-BOB-A-CHUNK AS SOUVENIRS!
I don’t know what I expected from them - just another imitation of Cliff Richard and the Shadows, I suppose, because they were all the rage at the time.
When I heard them, I thought there were out of this world - maybe too much out of this world.
No group, not even the Shadows made the same initial impression on me.
I remember thinking: ‘Here’s something completely new and fresh, it’ll be great if they can get it off the ground.’
But I didn’t think their sound was really commercial! I thought they were more of a musicians’ group FOR musicians.
Mind you, they had a rougher, original style then - like all the original Liverpool groups.
They played as they wanted, and sang a much wider range of material - including numbers which Manfred Mann and Freddie and the Dreamers later made big hits.
Resistance
Soon after, the Beatles played Manchester’s ‘Oasis’ beat club, and my judgment seemed to be right.
THEY WERE LAUGHED AT. ACCORDING TO A FRIEND OF MINE WHO RAN THE PLACE, THE EVENING WAS A NEAR-DISASTER.
People forget that the Beatles had to overcome a lot of sales-resistance before they were a success.
Their first big national disc hit, ‘Love Me Do,’ only really made it because of the fantastic support given by their Liverpool fans.
In a few months, they were to come back to that same ‘Oasis,’ and take the place by storm.

Get Back Rewatch 55 Years On: Day 14
Who is this talking to Ringo? Press? A boy scruff? Someone who wants their project produced by Apple? He tries George too.
Tumblr media
Again, I love the "freak-out" as John calls it. They really could've had so much fun together under different circumstances. (Different being neither of them ever dated John) But John's so sweet saying, "Id like it to be part of her new LP. Our new LP."
I wonder what Robert Fraser thought of the beard.
Tumblr media
Why are we playing 20 Flight Rock now, Paul? It's just overlayed over a montage to change "scenes", but I wonder what the real context was.
Billy. What a little ray of sunshine honestly.
Tumblr media
"So what should we do that's fun? Besides work?" I feel like every day, John has a little adorable quote, and this is today's. Words to live by.
I don't remember if Get Back includes the "Oh Darling" version where John's answering back between lines in conversation with the lyrics. I sincerely hope so. Peter Jackson was probably like "well I can only include so much homosexuality before people have too many questions."
Ringo, you smooth criminal. I love that he just has this trick he learned as a teenager that the Beatles were all impressed by, back when Ringo was the scary gangster with the car and the beard, and he still does it for them like ten years later. It's so endearing.
Tumblr media
Another cute John and Yoko moment: "It's just that screaming all the way." "Poor John." "Yes, it's so terrible." She's teasing him and being sweet to him at the same time. Cuties.
George asks Paul where his Rickenbacker is. "Isn't that one much better?" And Paul makes up some shit about the Hoffner being lighter. You nostalgic little bitch. Poor baby.
John's little guilty look at the camera when he's almost just taken something on film. It's cute. He looks like a naughty kid. But it's kind of a cool moment. It shows just how relaxed and natural he is. He's not performing for or worried about the cameras at all. What we're seeing of him today is just him. You know? Idk I think it's nice.
Tumblr media
What's with the little pigeon noises in the middle of a recording, guys? They're so weird smh
Poor Glyn. He's just trying to do his job and he has to deal with fucking Leopold and Leob over here. He gives them some instruction. There's a look between the two of them. And then it's all, "Don't interrupt" "Hey son" "Stahhs when" "Hey" "they're recording. We're bloody Stahhs you know." "Look fuckface. Don't comment." "The cheek." The impenetrable wall of Lennon and McCartney, folks.
"Well, we'll have to do it sitting down. Or we get too excited." It's heartbreaking to me how obvious it is that they're still just having the absolute time of their lives together and that, as John put it, "the minutes are crumbling away."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Literally what the hell is with Dennis smacking Paul's ass (as like a 'good job, your band wants to put your song out as the single' I guess) and nobody reacting? Linda would've been like "ope, time to find a new head of Apple films." (Dave Spinoza on RAM, anyone?) He really does look so proud of himself, though. Happy for you, baby.
Oh, right, that's what Robert thinks. Paul looks like his working class fantasy. (DH Lawrence. Victorian Miner.)
And I'm just going to add this, since Peter Jackson REFUSES. Paul: Can't afford to mess around here, you know. Then

With The Beatles: A 16yo's (horrible) album review pt.2 !!
Tumblr media
It Won't Be Long 🚆: Erm, the guitar is just *mwah* chef's kiss it really carries the song, she's the backbone. She's like, duh do do duh do and it's so cute. The background vocals are eating so good !! This song I think was the most prominent to me because I remember it from Across the Universe (incredible movie btw) . Really love this song, she's like a sister to me.
All I've Gotta Do !: Honestly would have done numbers in the 2010s because I feel like it has really good "call and response" potential !! Like, uh that one song,,,, I can't remember uhh oh Ain't No Mountain High Enough . I know I keep saying this but this song IS cute ! Also so far I've noticed they're utilizing back up vocals more which is much appreciated, I hope I hear it in the rest of the tracks on this album.
All My Loving 💗: Yay! More background vocals !! I go feral for them. The guitar is also SO good. If It Won't Be Long is a sister to me this song is my brother. Heard this one a lot growing up as well. Background vocals are heavenly the little , "ooooooos" in the background are so dreamy !!
Don't Bother Me 😔: okay first initial listen it reminded me of when my I would lose my mom in the store 😭😭 my forever "lost mom in the store" anthem !! Uhm, didn't quite jive with the rhythm but that's alright !! But it is a good song!! The dude's a little bit too dependent on that lady maybe her leaving was a good thing ??? idk I'm only guessing 😭
Little Child 🚸: uhm, I'm scared. girl they're gonna catch a case !! If a grown men in their 20s sang this to me I'd be like ,"Oh okay I'm gonna groove with y'all 'cause the beat is funky but the lyrics are concerning so idk might wanna work on that"
Till There Was You 🫵: oh. em. gee. La Vie En Rose who???? Girl this song is swoonworthy !! If a guy was like, "I used to never hear the birds singing before I met you, now that's all I hear" I'd cry OMG 😭😭 also it's just paul singing and like, omg it's so simple but it's simplicity totally makes it amazing !! It feels more personal that way !!! EDIT: OMG IM INJECTING THIS IN MY BLOODSTREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's so amazingly awesome oh em gee I'm actually addicted it's not funny ! Oh my god I'm gonna explode!! Dopamine is real and I'm experiencing the effects, the world beautiful again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please Mister Postman ✉️: this is a pretty good cover. Background vocals are once again in the spotlight they're just too good. The iconic beatles sound really starts to take shape in this album I've noticed !! Ringo did a good job on drums too !! Total rock and roll vibe. I was gonna compare it to another band it felt weird because it's like saying the parent sounds like the child and like no wdym the kid sounds like the parent !! I forget how much The Beatles really pioneered music !!!
Roll Over Beethoven 🎹: whaaaaa. man this track was a doozy ! They're cocky and it's workin'. Totally can see enthusiastic young couples totally jammin' to this it's so great ! Really loved the energy !!! Also that guitar solo is the beginning was AMAZEBALLS
Hold Me Tight 🥺: Whoa. This song is my second sister. This track was THE song at the beginning of my Beatles beginning when I was but a wee little girl lolll it's just so addictive. Makes me bop my head and smile everytime I hear it. The endorphins swarmed this one guys sorry 😔
You Really Got A Hold On Me 💕: Contradictions left and right !! Rhythm was a gentle little ebb and flow that was kinda refreshing to hear !! Liked the song.
I Wanna Be Your Man ♂️: whoa. Straightforward!! Some girls might like that in a man but uhm, idk the chanting of "I wanna be your man, I wanna be your lover" with the stark black and white of their faces on the album cover got me scared 😭😭 idk it was nightmare fuel I felt like someone was watching me. Uh but overall it was a high energy song maybe a bit too high energy for me 'cause I'm tired while writing this review but it wasn't really my preferred choice in music but I totally see me liking it like, a month from now !!
Devil In Her Heart ❤️: Maracas ?? 🤨whaarrrrr but uhm this one just felt like another song honestly. As I'm writing this review it's like, my 10th listen in the span of 3 days she's just not clicking 😭😭
Not A Second Time ⏰: Honestly the first few listens she felt bland like unseasoned chicken but now that I'm really listening it's got a simple little jive to her and I'm here for it !! It's got these vocal runs that I don't think I've heard before it's so unique!! Overall really liked her.
Money 💰: uh pink floyd who ???? But seriously this song rocks. Not the catchiest but it's true, she's REAL. I need MONEY
More album reviews on the way, next up: A Hard Days Night...

Nickel Bin #1:
I'd Be Talking All the Time by Ringo Starr
Tumblr media
We're starting all kinds of new nonsense this week here in the Dollar Bin. My famous brother publishes five days a week on Doom and Gloom From the Tomb. He's out of control. He's also concise, a word I clearly don't have much of a relationship with.
But there are certain moments going forward when I will declare that it's time for me, and you, to dive in and consider a single song, rather than an entire album. In such moments, we'll be reveling in the Nickel Bin rather than the Dollar Bin: you'll have less reading to do and therefore more time to spend on push ups and protest.
Sounds pretty sweet to me, but if you're unimpressed, please direct all complaints to Stephen Stills; most of the bad things in life are his fault, yes?
This inaugural edition of the Nickel Bin is a follow up to my recent post on Ringo Starr. I sought out his Nashville record after surviving Goodnight Vienna and I'm here to tell you people that Beaucoups of Blues is Ringo's masterpiece. The whole of Side A contains all the best things in life when it comes to Nashville and Ringo: throwaway lyrics, humble musicianship, even humbler song lengths, slick baton passing between the fiddler and Ben Keith's impeccable steel guitar, and Ringo's ridiculous - but also quite earnest - vocals.
The whole thing is a ton of fun; just look at the crew behind it all. Looks like a boy's school's marching band's 20th high school reunion when only one guy is still handsome (Ben Keith, first row flush right) and only one guy became rich and famous (Ringo, obviously).
Tumblr media
Because I've never created a rule I didn't immediately break on this blog I'll play you two songs today. The first is the most inappropriately joyful and upbeat song about prostitution I've ever heard. Only Starr could make sex work sound like a wholesome, back slapping good time.
youtube
This will be a great campfire song for the new summer camp I've got in development. Campers will come together at the end of each evening for swaying, smiling sing-a-longs: Reed's Heroin, Young's Borrowed Tune, and Cohen's Chelsea Hotel will feature prominently in the songbook and at the end of each evening the counselors will lead a stirring, sweet dreams version of Waits' What's He Building in There? We'll call it Trauma Camp; sign your kids up!
Anyway, what I really wanted you all to hear this evening is the last song on Side 1, I'd Be Taking All the Time. The song is fine, but it's the last 20 seconds that are worth your time all the time. Just listen to Ringo refer to himself in the 3rd person! I say that only Jonathan Richman, Rafi and Ringo can get away with such audacity.
youtube
And be sure to hang out for Ringo's last note: I dare you to listen to Ringo's voice crack without smiling. He sounds like he's the newest member of Jerry Jeff Walker's Lost Gonzo Band and is heading down to Marble Arch Station, or like he's jumping off Bob Pollard's roof.
I don't know why Ringo looks so bummed on his album cover when he's so good at making us laugh.
Cheers, Everyone.

Act One/Two Break: 925. Blackbeard talks about the RA's rescue of Kuma, their clash with Fujitora and Ryokugyu on the fourth day of the Reverie, and Big Mom being on the way to Wano. These were probably the articles that Sanji and Chopper cut out in 910. As well as likely the news about Cobra, Vivi, Sabo, and Imu.

listen i know this is my archive sideblog but i'm a little embarrassed to put this on main. i had a um. story i was planning to do for 2 years or so that got to like 12k before i put it on hold forever but i at least want to put down my general outline somewhere / not have it go to waste idk
carl tries to befriend johnny as a young kid and fails. stinky trying to target johnny with pranks at the same time doesn't help
carl fails as a bully in middle school / it backfires on him. johnny's the only target he has and the stronger bullies just attack them both.
johnny and carl finally become friends in high school. at first, johnny is antagonistic, but seeing carl covered in acne with a stupid mullet similar to his (carl heard johnny say mullets were stupid just months ago. what changed? nothing!) made him laugh. carl on the other hand acts more in line with what johnny remembers from elementary school. in fact, the only reason carl tried out bullying was a desperate attempt to avoid getting bullied himself. it didn't work and carl really regrets it. so when johnny makes fun of him at first he's like "yeah i deserve that."
johnny and carl are bullied in high school by retooled versions of trent and his goons from time of my life. at one point they steal a squint ringo figure of johnny's and carl ends up trading a trip mccoy figure to get it back. this is a huge milestone in their friendship
johnny is still a jerk even in his teens but he does care. he's a bigmouth with fluctuating grades and gets into trouble but he's a Trying. he's nicer than he is in his 20s though, that's for sure. once a bonehead, always a bonehead, as they say.
sandy once saves both johnny and carl from getting swirlies and johnny gets a huge crush on her. carl on the other hand wants to be friends with her— he's not into the dating scene much yet. he's rejected one girl or two so far and it makes johnny jealous and bitter.
pops' moon palace used to be an ice cream parlor by the same name. this is a nod to the "pops' soda shoppe" bible concept. teen johnny and carl were the reason why he rebranded to a retro-styled diner (kids aren't banned but. they had a fight. it involved food. they had to help pops clean up. they're enough of a hassle as it is.) pops gave carl the wrong ice cream every time as a test to see if he'd gather the courage to actually tell him he got the wrong one instead of nervously letting it slide Because He's Old (he was actually in his 50s back then. he started graying early.) and they become friends
in sophomore or junior year, carl begins to realize he has potential in science and starts to enjoy school more. this is him getting nerdier. it gives him a huge ego boost and he starts hanging out with uptight geek kids more instead of johnny. trouble is, they're not quite his friends. in fact, they make fun of his social skills and 'odd' interests in a more pretentious way. on johnny's end, he becomes jealous of the geeks "brainwashing" his best friend, but he gets very distracted by his increased interest in girls. carl decides johnny is a much better friend than those kids are and he isn't wrong.
the high school prom mentioned in candidate johnny is fully interlaced with the time of my life. carl brings a rubber duck to prom. johnny, upset and grumpy, sincerely believes sandy stood him up. he goes to prom anyway because are you kidding he wouldn't want to miss the girls food and the drinks etc. johnny sees the duck and takes the opportunity to cheer himself up via humiliating carl and it escalates
after some thinking, johnny comes to the conclusion that carl is the one thing holding him back / preventing him from getting what he wants in a few different ways.
after they graduate, johnny goes to the gym a lot, becomes very distant with carl and things start to reflect present day canon. johnny can't fully break the friendship with carl because deep down he still cares, he's just too stubborn. carl, on the other hand, Will Not give up because they only really have each other
fast forward some time and the events of "you cast a spell" happen in an 'episode' titled "hocus doofus." it ends differently. carl snaps, but he doesn't necessarily try to beat up johnny. this is as far as i'm gonna talk about
there were definitely moments where carl having a one-sided crush on johnny was kind of obvious but nothing super shippy overall
