Hoogleraar Ronald Meester heeft bij ZonMw, de Nederlandse organisatie voor gezondheidsonderzoek, een onderzoeksvoorstel ingediend naar aanleiding van de open call ‘Onderzoek naar redenen en oorzaken van oversterfte in de coronacrisis’.

Een eerder onderzoek naar de oversterfte door het CBS en RIVM heeft niet tot een conclusie geleid en daarnaast was er kritiek rondom de kwaliteit en beschikbaarheid van de data.

Meester vroeg datawetenschapper Marc Jacobs of hij mee wilde werken aan een onderzoeksvoorstel om de relatie tussen vaccinaties en oversterfte in kaart te brengen. Een heikel en zwaar gepolariseerd onderwerp en een reëel gevaar voor het succes van het rijksvaccinatieprogramma, schrijft Jacobs.

Voorstel afgewezen

Dinsdag kregen Meester en Jacobs te horen dat hun voorstel is afgewezen. In de reactie stond dat ‘de methodologie in zijn huidige opzet, het verzamelen van bronnen op verschillende manieren, niet reproduceerbaar is’.

En verder: “Het is uit uw voorstel onduidelijk of er voldoende epidemiologische kennis aanwezig is binnen de projectgroep om de bias in de geïncludeerde bronnen in te schatten.”

Volgens Jacobs is dit een autoriteitsargument. “Als hoogleraar waarschijnlijkheidsberekening en statisticus/modelleur hebben wij jaren aan ervaring opgedaan op het gebied van systematische reviews en epidemiologie. Verder geven wij les aan rechters, wetenschappers en epidemiologen. Dit alles telt niet mee.”

Het bewijs sijpelt toch wel door de dam

Het voorstel is ook afgekeurd omdat men ‘niet is overtuigd van de haalbaarheid van dit onderzoek binnen de gestelde periode’.

Neuroloog Jan Bonte reageert: “Natuurlijk werd de aanvraag […] afgewezen. Terwijl het aan alle voorwaarden voldeed. En nota bene wordt hier het ‘autoriteitsargument’ gebezigd. Geeft niks. Het bewijs sijpelt toch wel door de dam.”

Weinig erkenning eindexamenleerlingen

Op 27 februari 2020 werd de eerste coronabesmetting in Nederland geregistreerd. Het Journaal zond destijds beelden uit van een hermetisch afgesloten woning, ergens in Brabant. Achteraf bleek dat er eind januari al tientallen mensen aan corona gerelateerde klachten hadden ontwikkeld. Zij testten later in februari dan ook alsnog positief. Iets meer dan drie jaar later, op 10 maart 2023 om precies te zijn, werd via de Rijksoverheid bekendgemaakt dat het kabinet, op advies van het OMT, had besloten dat alle coronarestricties konden komen te vervallen. Momenteel zijn we met z’n allen blijkbaar in een zogeheten endemische fase aangekomen, waarin het virus nog wel rondgaat, maar waarbij de meeste mensen de ziekte hebben doorgemaakt of zijn gevaccineerd. Covid-19 lijkt vanaf nu niet meer tot grote maatschappelijke en economische problemen te leiden, al wordt er wel nog een beroep gedaan op ieders gezond verstand om eventuele besmettingen te voorkomen. Deze regels zijn inmiddels alom bekend, maar worden nog maar weinig nageleefd.

De pandemie heeft bij veel mensen diepe sporen achtergelaten. Op lichamelijk en mentaal gebied. De gevolgen ervan zijn dan ook nog niet voorbij en vergeten. Maar daar lijkt onderwijsminister Dennis Wiersma geen boodschap aan te hebben. Hij schreef in november van vorig jaar al aan de Tweede Kamer dat na drie jaar van diverse aanpassingen de examenperiode dit schooljaar weer zo goed als hetzelfde zal zijn als voor corona. Waar in 2020, net na de uitbraak van de pandemie en ten tijde van de eerste lockdown, de eindexamens in het voortgezet onderwijs zelfs helemaal niet doorgingen en in de daaropvolgende jaren een aantal welkome versoepelingen werden gehanteerd, zal dit schooljaar alleen het tweede tijdvak verlengd worden van vier naar tien dagen. Dit betekent concreet dat er onder andere geen zogeheten ‘duimregeling’ meer gehanteerd zal worden, waarbij de leerling een ‘duim’ mocht leggen op een onvoldoende om zo alsnog te kunnen slagen. En ook zal er dit jaar, naast het eerste en tweede tijdvak, geen derde tijdvak meer plaatsvinden, waarin herexamens afgenomen kunnen worden.    

Wat we ons moeten realiseren is dat de lichting die nu de eindexamens zal gaan maken, maar liefst drie jaar te maken heeft gehad met onderbroken leerjaren, voorzien van enkele lockdowns, minimaal zes volledige maanden online lessen volgen en weinig échte sociale interactie. Daarnaast speelden zaken als ziekte, onzekerheid en angst over het virus en wat de toekomst zou gaan brengen mee ten tijde van een groot gedeelte van hun ontwikkeling. Bedenk daarbij dat een leerling die nu vijftien jaar is, maar liefst een vijfde van zijn of haar leven te maken heeft gehad met de coronaperikelen en iemand van achttien jaar een zesde deel. Dit zijn feiten die niet moeten worden onderschat.

‘Soms, als ik aan die periode terugdenk, roept dat emoties op van angst en verdriet’, vertelde de nu twintigjarige Sanne Daniëlle onlangs in dagblad Trouw. Ze geeft aan dat met name de tweede lockdown haar op een mentaal dieptepunt bracht, waarin ze naar eigen zeggen ‘meer tranen liet dan dat ze heeft gelachen’. Ze is niet de enige. In een onderzoek van het RIVM gaf 45% van de jongeren aan zich vaak eenzaam te voelen en had bijna 35% last van depressieve gevoelens. Dat zijn cijfers die de hoogspanning rondom het voorbereiden en het maken van de examens niet op een positieve manier zullen beïnvloeden. Iets meer coulance, bijvoorbeeld in het aanbieden van een extra herkansing, was dan ook op z’n plaats geweest om ook de examenlichting van dít jaar enigszins tegemoet te komen. Het zou een stukje erkenning geven aan een bijzonder lastige periode, waarin het leven zo goed als stilstond maar de wereld wel gewoon doordraaide.

RIVM kept changing the standards for what are 'safe' levels even though it would've been code red or black if non-adjusted. also various hospitals were forbidden from using face masks and since over a year (for future readers: it's may 2023 rn), infected staff was allowed to work. i was actually jealous in some ways of the US bc i read how medical professionals and shop staff etc actually asked people to keep their mask ON. i've only been asked or pressured by therapists, doctors, nurses, etc to take my mask OFF and they even got pissed bc i asked them to wear one.

also if i get infected i'm really screwed bc there is no paxlovid and there are no long covid clinics in the country. they plan on opening only ONE next year, while in germany there's dozens with each still 9 months of waiting lists bc the demand is high.

my immunocompromised and disabled mom doesn't fucking get it even though she clearly got covid several times with horrible lasting side effects, and my sad doesn't fucking get how testing works and they both believe they're always being safe even though they dont wear masks or she does but takes it off inside somehow.

Civil servants and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) have advised Minister of Health Fleur Agema to donate over 10,000 vaccines for the mpox virus to countries in Africa. This is evident from a document that the minister sent to the Tweede Kamer the lower house of Dutch parliament on Thursday. Agema nevertheless decided not to donate vaccines. There are currently 99,700 mpox vaccines available in the Netherlands. The RIVM recommends 100,000 vaccines according to the minister’s document but the institute also felt that 13,200 vaccines should be donated. The boxes can be used up to September of next year and have no EU registration. The RIVM confirmed to the ANP that it is supporting the advice to donate vaccines. The donations, which other countries are doing, could also help prevent the virus from spreading to Europe. There is said to be a need for 10 million vaccines in the areas most affected by the outbreak in Central Africa. On Thursday the minister announced that she wants to wait for a new delivery of vaccines at the start of next year before she decides to donate any vaccines. “100,000 is exactly the stock that I have been recommended to keep,” Agema said at the Catshuis. The official document states that the RIVM advised keeping "around 100,000" for a possible outbreak.

Het Duitse OMT heeft covid-19 bewust gevaarlijker voorgesteld dan het was en lockdowns aanbevolen terwijl men wist dat die kwalijker gevolgen zouden hebben dan covid zelf. Het ‘Covid Crisis Team’, zoals het in Duitsland heette, wist ook dat covid-19 minder doden veroorzaakte dan een stevige griepgolf en dat mondkapjes niet beschermen tegen virusoverdracht. Toch hebben de wetenschappelijke adviseurs van de Duitse regering de zwaarst mogelijke maatregelen aanbevolen. Daarbij zijn ze mogelijk geïnstrueerd door de politiek.

Een en ander blijkt uit documenten die zijn vrijgekomen na een Woo-verzoek en die tot ophef hebben geleid in Duitsland.

Het Robert Koch Institut (RKI) in Berlijn, dat te vergelijken is met het RIVM in Nederland, heeft meer dan 2500 pagina’s vrijgegeven met documenten over vergaderingen van het Duitse ‘Covid Crisis Team’ die plaatsvonden tussen januari 2020 en april 2021. Dit na langlopende rechtszaken die zijn aangespannen door het kritische magazine Multipolar, dat in januari 2020 werd opgericht.

Veel passages in de documenten zijn zwart gelakt. Reden waarom Multipolar op 6 mei bij de rechtbank in Berlijn volledige vrijgave zal eisen. Toch valt al voldoende af te leiden uit de passages die wél leesbaar zijn. Ook de reguliere media hebben de documenten intussen ontdekt. Zo bracht publieke omroep ZDF op 24 maart op zijn website een verrassend kritisch artikel, met de kop De explosieve corona-protocollen van het RKI.

Eén rode draad in de documenten lijkt te zijn dat covid-19 gevaarlijker werd voorgesteld aan het Duitse publiek dan het RKI wist dat het was. Op 16 december 2020 bijvoorbeeld, aan het begin van de tweede langdurige Duitse lockdown, werden lockdowns in Afrika besproken en opgemerkt dat die “gevolgen hebben” die “deels erger zijn dan de gevolgen van covid zelf”. Op 19 maart 2021 werd benadrukt dat “covid-19 niet vergeleken moet worden met griep, omdat normale griepgolven meer mensen doden, hoewel covid-19 om andere redenen zorgwekkend is”. De experts van het RKI stelden ook dat de FFP-2 mondkapjes, die in Duitsland op veel plaatsen verplicht waren en ostentatief werden gedragen door Angela Merkel en haar collega’s, nutteloos waren.

Veel aandacht gaat uit naar één intrigerende passage in de notulen van medio maart 2020. Op dat moment had covid-19 in Duitsland nog de pandemische risicobeoordeling “matig”. Echter: voorbereidingen waren afgerond om de risicobeoordeling op te schalen naar “hoog” zodra iemand daartoe het signaal zou geven. Wie die “iemand” was, is niet bekend, want de naam is weggelakt. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat het zou gaan om de toenmalige Duitse minister van Volksgezondheid Jens Spahn, of misschien wel om de ‘eindbaas’ van destijds: Angela Merkel zelf.

Op 17 maart was het blijkbaar zo ver en besloot het RKI plotseling, zonder duidelijke gronden, het covid-risico op te schalen naar “hoog”. Hiermee ontstaat het beeld van een politiek besluit, bedoeld om het publiek angst aan te jagen en zo de weg vrij te maken voor de ingrijpende coronamaatregelen.

Opvallend is dat de ZDF op 25 maart haar berichtgeving over de notulen van maart 2020 heeft genuanceerd. Volgens de publieke omroep ontkent het RKI dat het een politicus was die het signaal “hoog” gaf. Het zou zijn gegaan om een RKI-functionaris, maar diens naam is niet geopenbaard. Eén van de oprichters van Multipolar, journalist Paul Schreyer, reageerde dezelfde dag scherp op de website van het magazine. Hij verwijt de ZDF vervalsing van hun berichtgeving en benadrukt nog eens dat de plotselinge risicobeoordeling “hoog” geen enkele wetenschappelijke onderbouwing had: “De bewering dat het RKI de opschaling deed – en daarmee de basis legde voor de lockdown en noodtoestand – op basis van wetenschappelijk overleg is niet langer houdbaar. De opschaling vond abrupt plaats, zonder gedocumenteerde discussie en overleg, in opdracht van een naamloze speler.”
