The Great Galacto + tridents
Throughout the movie, Galacto and his items are represented with tridents
Tumblr media
The badge on his chest has a trident on it
Tumblr media
When Jet and the others arrive on Mascarpone, they see a mysterious ship. Jet realizes that the ship belongs to Galacto because it has a trident on it.
Tumblr media
Inside the ship is a logbook belonging to Galacto, which has a trident on the cover.
A trident is a three-pronged spear that is commonly associated with sea gods such as Poseidon and Neptune. The Great Galacto doesn't have anything to do with the sea, as he is a space alien. However, tridents also stand for power. The Great Galacto is a very powerful character, always seeking to do the impossible and be a space hero.

One Small Step is finally out! It’s the second RJG movie after Back to Bortron 7.
Comparing it to BTB7, which is my favorite thing in the Ready Jet Go franchise, wouldn’t be very fair. So I will judge it on its own merits.
SPOILER ALERT!
The best thing about the special is that it gives everyone a chance to shine. Jet is his usual zany, optimistic, carefree self. He proves to be a valuable asset to the team by building an entire, functioning saucer from scratch. Man, this kid could rival Jimmy Neutron or Dexter from Dexter’s Lab. Jet’s all-around greatness is what makes his disappearance all the more saddening.
Sydney gets some character development. In this special, we see her attempt to fix the saucer by herself. While she does eventually manage to fix the saucer, she does have some difficulty along the way, showing off her flaws a little better so she’s less of a mary-sue (well she’s not a mary-sue in the first place, but at times I can see why people might think she is)
Sean also gets some development. This special is pretty much him and Sydney swapping brains. Sean is extremely eager to go to the moon. Given his admiration for Neil Armstrong and the Apollo mission in general, this makes a lot more sense than you would think (Sean is usually apprehensive to go to space). We also see him acting like a big brother to Mindy, which is really nice.
I used to hate Mindy, but now I hate her less. Mindy isn’t a jerk to Sean for once. She actually takes the time to listen to what he has to share about the Apollo mission and learns a lot in the special. She basically acts as a younger sibling or student to Sean, and she also serves as a surrogate for the target audience. She also has some ship tease with Mitchell!
Carrot and Celery play the role of the supportive parents, as they allow the kids to go to space on their own. This is justified, given that the kids have grown and matured a lot over the course of the series. They also get some funny lines, and Celery sings a beautiful rendition of “Tiny Blue Dot”. Sunspot is a comic relief as usual, being crazily prepared. Mitchell gets to show his kind side even more. When he saw the kids drowning in Little Dipper Lake, he could have easily left them there, but no, he rescued them with his rowboat, and to his delight, he is invited to their sleepover. Now that’s what I call character development.
One Small Step gets a 10/10 for amazing character arcs, brilliant music, and a plot that makes sense.

Season 2 release date!!!!
Today, I went on WTTW’s website and I found out when season 2 of Ready Jet Go will premiere! It has a week of new episodes from April 2-6!!!!!
Tumblr media
The only problem is, the episodes are out of order. WHY????????
PBS aired Nature Cat’s first four season 2 episodes in order. PBS is going to air The Cat in the Hat season 3 in order in March. And PBS is going to air Pinkalicious & Peterrific in order. But why not Ready Jet Go!?! What did RJG ever do to you, PBS scheduler?
Here’s an image I found on the PBS SoCal website with leaked season 2 episode titles
Tumblr media
The episodes that are airing in April are as follows;
April 2 - Mindy’s Ice Rink / Measure for Measure
April 3 - Asteroid Belt Space Race / Sydney 2
April 4 - Water, Water Everywhere / Cressida Story Contest
April 5 - Who Messed Up the Treehouse? / Fact or Fiction
April 6 - Mindy and Carrot Bake / Cressida Begins
SPOILERS: DON’T READ BELOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO GET SPOILED!
The creator, Craig Bartlett, confirmed that Mindy will turn 5 in Season 2, and she will go to space in season 2. She turns 5 in episode 9, aptly titled Mindy Turns 5. What if Mindy goes to space in the April 5 and April 6 episodes? Won’t kids get confused?
Believe it or not, the show actually has continuity. Airing the episodes in order is essential in order to enjoy the show and avoid continuity lockout.
But in all honesty, having season 2 aired out of order is much better than there being no season 2 at all.

Parallels between the beginning and ending songs in Space Camp
Tumblr media
In the opening song, "Dear Great Galacto," Jet sings about the Great Galacto's "space hero code," which includes, among other things, bravery and toughness.
In the ending song, "Space Hero," Stella sings about how Jet doesn't need to be brave or tough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the start of the movie, Jet wanted to be like the Great Galacto, up to and including doing everything by himself. He saved the day by being Jet. And Jet is great enough.
The imagery in "Space Hero" also reflects that of "Dear Great Galacto," as seen with silhouettes of Jet running on a red background.
Tumblr media
Except this time, he's running on his own. In "Dear Great Galacto," he both chased after and ran away from some alien. You could say that he was chasing after the Great Galacto (the alien is not Galacto, but some random unnamed character). But now, he's running for himself. Because he's just Jet.

SPACE CAMP PREVIEW BREAKDOWN
iTunes uploaded a clip of Space Camp, and I already posted it to my main blog. Let's break it down, shall we?
A new plot factor has emerged - Jet's favorite TV show character is revealed to be "Great Galacto," a "space hero." Jet is inspired by this character to surf on waves in outer space. Based on the description of the character, it reminds me of Flash Gordon for some reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The animation here is gorgeous. It's to be expected, since this movie is co-produced by Universal and Dreamworks, which would give it a bigger budget. The colors here, such as pink, purple, and blue, make it even prettier. Hey.....
As Jet is surfing, he records a letter/song to the Great Galacto Fan Club. The song appears to fall into the ska genre, and the lyrics are this:
Dear Great Galacto, It’s Jet Propulsion, your greatest fan Writing to tell you, if I can How much of my life goals are owed to your Great Galacto space hero ?? (I can't make out what he says here) Bravery, toughness, self-reliance A student of the laws of science Never afraid to take that chance And always ready for a song and dance Mentally, and physically fit A solo act, and proud of it Stronger, faster, healthier To the great unknown, excelsior!
All this time, Jet based his entire personality on the Great Galacto. He even admits how much of his "life goals" are owed to the character. "Bravery, toughness, self-reliance" - these are all some of Jet's personality traits, since he is fearless and always finds a way out of any problem.
"A student of the laws of science" - a law of science is a statement, based on repeated experiments or observations, that describes or predicts a range of natural phenomena. As Jet sings this line, he can be seen juggling planets, so I guess the "laws of science" in this case would refer to gravity.
Tumblr media
"Never afraid to take that chance" - Jet, multiple times throughout the series, acts before he thinks.
"And always ready for a song and dance" - Jet also bursts into song at the drop of a hat throughout the song.
"Mentally, and physically fit" - Jet is definitely physically fit, since he can run fast, and he somehow never gains weight despite how much he eats. The mentally fit part is questionable though. Jet is a genius, there's no doubt about that. He can name most of Jupiter's moons, quickly calculate how many Earths can fit into the sun, is a decent inventor, and during this line, he plays chess. However, he's also an idiot, since he can't keep his identity a secret at all. But we love him just the same.
Tumblr media
"A solo act, and proud of it" - I don't quite understand this line. I don't think Jet is a "solo act." He loves having his friends around, and even if they aren't there, he's always with Sunspot. It's implied that he hates being alone in a few episodes. In "Jet 2," he goes into despair when he thinks that Sean and Sydney don't want to be his friends anymore, and in "My Three Suns," he has a bad daydream where he's left all alone in a void, to be "it" forever. I think that this line will come back somehow. Maybe in the movie, Jet will try to do something by himself, only to later need the help of friends.
"To the great unknown, excelsior!" - Jet also seems to have lifted his "excelsior" catchphrase from Great Galacto. The phrase itself is Latin for "onward and upward," which he states in "Treehouse Observatory."
Great Galacto seems to be like a masculine, Bortronian counterpart to Commander Cressida (I'm assuming that Galacto is male/masc because his name ends in an "o," which is usually considered masc). Both are space heroes, both have alliterative names, both star in TV shows, and both are idolized by one of the main characters. Sydney idolizes Cressida, and Jet idolizes Galacto. Maybe this will be brought up in the movie. Who knows?

Some notes on Space Camp
Welp, now the movie is out. I have so much I wanna say, but I’ll wait until it comes out on YouTube to rewatch the movie (because the UI on the PBS Kids app sucks) and also I have a college thing to do tomorrow and Saturday, so yeah. More in-depth posts will come later. For now, I’ll just do bullet points (Spoilers abound, obviously)
The writers finally remembered that Face 9000 exists, and he plays a critical role in relaying information about the Deshrinkulum.
The writers, however, forgot that Commander Cressida exists. She’s not brought up once, not even in relation to the Great Galacto. Well, I guess that’s the law of equivalent exchange.
Speaking of the Great Galacto, he seems to be a commentary on YouTubers/social media influencers that do stupid things and have an impressionable young audience. He’s a good guy, though. He’s also Scottish for some reason. Well, Uncle Zucchini is Brooklyn/Joisey, so I’m not complaining.
As I suspected, Jet’s insistence on working alone ends up making things worse for him. Of course, he just wanted to protect Sean, Sydney, and Mindy, but still.
I predicted that Jet would have a “break the cutie” moment in this movie, and I was right. He even cries at one point. Poor thing. It’s even sadder that it happened to such an optimistic character like him.
According to the song “Brother From Another Sunspot Mother,” Jet adopted Sunspot from a litter. Here’s the thing though: in the flashback, Jet looks like the same age he currently does. This goes against what was established in “Sunday Drive.” That Sunspot lived with the Propulsions since Jet was a baby.
The songs in this movie are really great. They go into all sorts of genres too. Ska (Dear Great Galacto), a Disney-style award bait song™️ (Brother From Another Sunspot Mother”), blues (“Super Hyperdrive”), a marching song (“It Takes a Team”), etc
The scenery shows massive improvement. The trees especially look more realistic, instead of looking like stage props like in the TV show.
Stella was handled better than I thought. Contrary to what her actress said, she wasn’t a “villain.” She was just a jerk, much like Mitchell was. She didn’t do anything to physically hurt Jet and the others or anything. And she becomes nicer by the end of the movie.
As for Mitchell himself, well, they didn’t handle them the best. He spends 99% of the movie trying to expose Stella and Jet, and acts like he hates them. He even vilifies them by saying that they’re plotting to take over the world or whatever. What the hell happened here? They just undid all of his character development?
A minor complaint I had about the main show is that there was a small amount of background characters, and when there were, most of them were white. It made it look like Washington had the diversity of a cornfield, when that’s far from the truth. However, in this movie, there are plenty of people of color. For example, Houston is Black, Aurora is Asian-American, and Dr. Chandra is Southeast Asian. Heck, there are even some plus-size characters in the crowd shots. That’s also a good thing, since most of the earthie background characters seemed to have the same skinny body type. Heck, even Stella is a bit brown, and her voice actress is Asian-Canadian iirc.
Dr. Bergs is back, as is Dr. Skelley. Dr. Rafferty doesn’t appear at all. Maybe it’s because her voice actress was too busy or unavailable. Who knows?
Lillian doesn’t appear either. 😔
For those who wanted Mitchlendez or Propulsean shipping moments, you’re out of luck. Mindy sneaks up on Mitchell just for old times sake, and he does lend her his phone at one point, but that’s it. As for Propulsean, Jet and Sean just have standard friendship moments in the movie. Nothing too shippy, and he doesn’t call him “Seanzo” once. It could be for one of two reasons: the crew decided that they hate the ships and tried to remove any “puppy love” subtext between any characters. The other reason (for Propulsean) is that LGBTQ+ characters in kids shows causes major controversies nowadays, more so than usual, with Ron DeSantis and his fascist friends accusing any kids show that includes LGBTQ+ characters of “grooming.” They even tried to take Work It Out Wombats off the air just for having lesbian mothers. Even so, I’m happy if Jet and Sean are just friends.
Aside from the basic plot of accidentally going to space, it doesn’t actually have much in common with the 80s movie SpaceCamp.
That’s all, folks!

PBS Kids News (12/7/17)
1. Odd Squad
Tumblr media
On Monday, January 15, PBS KIDS will premiere a brand new one-hour movie from the multiple Emmy Award-winning series, ODD SQUAD. In ODD SQUAD: WORLD TURNED ODD, agents Oona, Olympia, and Otis accidentally change the past and undo every odd case Odd Squad ever solved. The agents embark on a mission across time to set things right, using a variety of math skills and teamwork. Following the “odd” movie premiere, fans can stick around for a special sneak peek of PBS KIDS’ newest upcoming series, PINKALICIOUS & PETERRIFIC, which premieres February 19.
(I’m really excited for the special, and the sneak peek!)
2. Splash and Bubbles
Tumblr media
The Jim Henson Company, Herschend Studios, Varèse Sarabande Records, and The Cutting Edge Group announce the inaugural release of music from the hit PBS Kids preschool series, Splash and Bubbles. The single, "And So We Celebrate (Coral Day)" will be available on all major digital retailers on December 1, 2017, in celebration of the holiday season and the all-new episode "Coral Day" premiering on December 11, 2017 (check local listings).
In "Coral Day," it's the holiday season in Reeftown and everyone is getting ready for Coral Day, a celebration of the wonderful coral that makes up their home. Splash, new to Reeftown and its traditions, wonders what he can contribute to the festival.
With themes of unity, family, friendship, and gratitude, the single written by award-winning songwriter Mike Himelstein and his long-time Henson collaborator Dena Diamond, features vocals from cast members including the show's creator John Tartaglia as Splash, Leslie Carrara-Rudolph as Bubbles, Raymond Carr as Dunk, and Aymee Garcia as Ripple. "And So We Celebrate (Coral Day)" is a true holiday classic in the making.
(But why didn’t they release the single under PBS Kids Tunes? All the other music for other shows gets released under that label)
ALSO: Herschend Enterprises and Sally Corporation have announced an agreement to develop a new family dark ride based on the hit animated show Splash and Bubbles. The series, co-produced by The Jim Henson Company and Herschend Studios, Herschend Enterprises’ media arm, encourages children to explore ocean science and marine biology through character driven comedy. Airing daily on PBS stations nationwide and for free on PBS KIDS Video app, Splash and Bubbles consistently ranks among the top five PBS KIDS series for children ages 2-8 each month and is available worldwide on Netflix and via broadcast in international territories including Canada, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. This new alliance between Herschend Enterprises and Sally Corporation marks the first time the two entertainment companies are collaborating on a ride of this type. Sally Corporation debuted the new attraction concept at the IAAPA Attractions Expo (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions), the largest convention in the theme park industry, which hosted more than 37,000 attendees in Orlando. In addition to providing Sally Corporation development rights, Herschend has developed a line of custom merchandise, including plush and apparel, based on the series.
(So apparently the show is so popular its getting a ride. I think it would be cool if RJG got its own ride that takes you through the solar system)
3. Ready Jet Go!
Tumblr media
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/ready-jet-go-holidays-in-boxwood-terrace
So apparently, Common Sense Media reviewed Holidays in Boxwood Terrace. What? The episode isn’t supposed to air until next Monday as of this writing! I read the review and it is filled to the top with spoilers. DO NOT READ THE REVIEW. I’m still excited for the ep, but I need to figure out how to forget all the spoilers. 4 more days guys. Hang in there.
4. Thomas and Friends
Tumblr media
https://www.facebook.com/unctv/videos/10159512830105164/
I’m exactly a month late, but whatever. Anyways, it’s official. Thomas and Friends, a long-running staple of PBS (its been on PBS since 1989, if you count Shining Time Station’s run on the channel), is leaving PBS Kids for good in 2018.
You read that right. Even though Thomas and Friends was never my favorite on PBS Kids, but it was still a good show. It did go downhill when Sharon Miller became the head writer, but it got better when Andrew Brenner or whatever his name is took over.
I wonder why its being removed? Low ratings? Not enough funding? Who knows? PBS didn’t exactly treat it the best either. I almost never see it on WTVI PBS Charlotte, except maybe on weekends. Whatever the case may be, I’ll miss this show.
