The fact that the Httyd gang knows about the effect of dragon nip but they are never seen using it on any dragons throughout the franchise unless it's like a last resort or an emergency to stop extremely out of control, hostile dragons. They know that grass is like a drug for the dragons so they never use it against them even to try and train them. As if it is against their moral code to try the easiest way to tame any dragon.
Like, these kids know all these little perks about dragons that Hiccup learned in the first movie. The dragon nip, eels, moving spot of light, specific disabling scratch spots etc. And none of them uses these to befriend or train any dragons throughout the course of the franchise! Dragon nip is an emergency last resort for when they encounter a super aggressive dragon, eels are an absolute no, nobody used shiny laser light spot on any dragons post Httyd 1.
No, they befriend the dragons with trust. They'll only give a dragon scratches after asking permission that is telegraphed in their body language.
The riders respect dragons and there are so many little subtle things which show how they never treat these incredible amazing beings as if they are animals, they always treat them as individuals. As equals.
I love Httyd so much like you have no idea.

Lying to myself everytime Hiccup sends a terror mail in Rtte. Idc about coloration differences, it is Sharpshot. Sharpshot didn't just disappear after Dob.
Hiccup still has him, and loves him, and takes care of him. And he sits on Toothless' head and they play together sometimes but also have an incredibly one-sided rivalry centered around trying to impress Hiccup. And he bothers Hiccup while he's working because he likes laying on his desk like a cat. And for all the shit he gives them, he loves Hiccup and Toothless so much and they're like a little family. He's still there guys he's just chilling in Toothless' saddlebag most of the time.
The series may have forgotten about Sharpshot, but I have not. He is still there and so are all the other dragon riders' trained terrors.

I count 12 medals here, & he’s like 15 at this point so if thawfest happens once a year (in spring, when it thaws) … the kids start competing when they’re 3 years old?

tv series may have given hiccup a bit too much plot armour and OP moments and shit but he lost his leg while defeating the red death, was disowned by his father and was ostracised by his whole village for 15 years, kid's allowed to have his hero fantasy

I feel like httyd1 and Rob/Dob, in terms of Stoick and Hiccup’s relationship, it’s kinda more reliant on Stoick understanding Hiccup, whereas rtte is more centred around Hiccup understanding Stoick. Obviously there’s overlap in both too but generally speaking. It makes sense though, Stoick had to first understand his kid and after they fixed their bond, Hiccup started respecting him a bit more (and having better communication) and when being thrust into the leadership position, had to learn from the most obvious leader in his life (and his own experiences of course but Stoick was still obviously a role model to him). He could sympathise more as well from all this too.
It would’ve been cool to more clearly observe this shift fully happening between Dob and Rtte, given there was a lot of implied development too, but we still get to see a lot which is cool.

BFKSBSKDBDN PORTRAIT OF HICCUP AS A BUFF MAN MY BELOVEDDD !!!!!!!!!! I CANNOT WAIT TO GET THEREEEEEEEE. BEST EP OUT OF ROB/DOB/RTTE FIGHT ME
Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man actually shaped me as a human being!!!! The episode itself and the story was so satisfying to follow, and the ending was so gratifying - the way he stands up holding the feather high whilst everyone looks on in shock.
“For only a hiccup could get this far, from one to another, be proud of who you are.”
this always hits me in the feels. He sends the whole episode trying to be the Viking that he thinks his father always wanted him to be, when who he was is all he needs. Hiccup needs to embrace who he is and be proud of what he’s done, and by the end of the episode he learns to stop trying to be something he isn’t, and start being who he really is. A really important message for everyone.

(The transcript for the episode, from the httyd fandom website)
anyway LOVE this episode, it’s so funky and fun to watch as well ugh I love httyd

Soooooo thinking about riders of berk and uh...... who's gonna tell Hiccup that Thor was in fact angry with toothless?
I mean i guess he felt bad after hitting hiccup in the head with lightning and chilled out but like ya know, he was peeved for a little bit there
Ok so i made this a jokey post originally but i actually want to add in the information
So the episode in question "When Lightning Strikes" the plot is that the gang makes large metal dragon perches, and shortly thereafter, Berk is hit by several lightning storms of noticeably increased intensity
Mildew tries to blame the dragons, but in the end they figure out that it was actually the metal that was causing the lightning storms, and while the vikings all think its just because Thor was angry at the metal, we know its because lightning is attracted to metal, which is what really caused the storms.......
Except
That's NOT TRUE
From the NOAA
Tumblr media
From TORRO in the UK
Tumblr media
Another
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And one more for good measure
Tumblr media
So as you can see, while metal is a good conductor of electricity, lightning is NOT attracted to metal.
Lightning is no more likely to hit metal than it is any other material.
Metal does not cause lightning storms, nor will it increase their intensity.
Lightning tends to seek the quickest path to take to the ground, otherwise it wouldn't be hitting trees very often, and every large city would either be unlivable due to the mass amounts of intense lightning storms that occurred, or they would have to construct buildings out of alternative materials.
So the lightning storms on Berk cannot be explained by the presence of the metal structures, it just doesn't work like that.
Now the most likely option is that is was all just a big coincidence, and they made these structures right ahead of a particularly unsettled bit of weather marked by more extreme lightning that they were used to.
Sometimes that just happens, weather is predictable, but never guaranteed.
Now my argument for it genuinely being Thor pissed off at Toothless for whatever reason, is, from my basic understanding of storms and how they form, they should have been experiencing less storms than they had in the past.
____________________
And to be very clear METEOROLOGY IS NOT MY MAJOR.
These are THEORIES based on the class i have been taking, i may not be 100% spot on, in fact i could be 100% wrong.
This is just what i feel it would be based on my understanding of weather. If someone has a degree in this kinda stuff, id love to hear what they think, but like, letting y'all know ahead of time, i am not an authority on this.
Moving on
_____________________
So in order for rain and storms to form they need something called condensation nuclei.
Condensation nuclei is what allows water vapor to take any kind of form. No condensation nuclei, no rain. This is the thought process through which could seeding takes place.
Put more stuff in the clouds for the drops to form on, and the rain will fall! There's really no evidence to support cloud seeding, but that's the idea of it nonetheless.
Now as to what condensation nuclei are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book is Meteorology Today by Ahrens and Henson
Condensation nuclei are extremely small particles that float around in the air and give water vapor molecules something to land and condense on.
Many things can be a condensation nuclei - fungi, salt, dust, volcanic ash, and sulfuric and nitric acids.
Now important to this, Smoke is a condensation nuclei.
Smoke, ash, both things that would be extremely common around dragons. And fire, smoke, ash, dust, all that kind of stuff, would be MOST HEAVILY in the atmosphere around Berk DURING the war with the dragons.
Houses constantly being burned down, smoke, dust, flying into the air, falling off anything going up into the sky, whether that's projectiles or the dragons themselves.
So overall Berk should have been experiencing more storms before they were at peace with the dragons, and once they were, there would be less stuff going into the air for the water to condense on.
I cannot say whether there would be a big, noticeable difference, but the difference would be there regardless.
So there being more intense storms after the dragons and vikings are chill with each other doesn't make a ton of sense, if anything, there should be less.
Also, condensation and in cloud precipitation is likely what causes lightning
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So taking into consideration that lightning is NOT attracted to metals, and that since the peace with dragons, there should be less clouds and storms, there's no real definitive reason for those intense lightning strikes and ESPECIALLY no explanation for the lightning FOLLOWING Toothless like that.
youtube
There's no reason for it to do that!
There's another scene later that show even clearer, i can't find it right now, but it shows where toothless is low to the ground and the lightning is following him.
It WOULD NOT do that!
There is no reason for it to do that unless something was Making it do that!
So, following that logic, it HAD to be Thor (or other god).
Lightning does not behave in that fashion, it would not chase behind a low moving target like that.
There is no other explanation as to why the lightning was behaving like that outside acts of god.
Tragically, Mildew was Correct.
Thor was pissed.
Or maybe he was trying to be helpful!
The village was getting stirred up because of Mildew, maybe Thor knew this would help a lil bit, even though it was also very bad.
And hey, when they put that statue by Mildew's house, the lightning kept hitting him so ya know?
It might have been a misunderstanding!
Either way, not natural how that lightning was behaving, imo, had to be caused by one of the various Norse gods, thank you for you time.

Island Attack
(Spoilers ahead) Theory time. In case you didn't see my (Dis)Agreeable post, I'll reiterate that I think the timeline in RTTE is flawed sometimes. In Oswald's letter, he implies that Heather was on Berserker Island when he left even though she was a little child and he had left around 3-4 years prior to that episode. So, the time doesn't always make sense. I think this happened with Heather's time given for her island's massacre too.
Heather said that she and Windshear were on their own for years, meaning the village had to have been destroyed back in DoB times before Dagur went to jail. This doesn't line up to me. The new chief had no reason to do that. I've heard characters act like Dagur just does things because he's deranged, but I've consistently seen reason behind his actions (even if it only makes sense to him). It makes no sense to obsess over getting revenge on Hiccup, but then go to a random island and kill everyone. Why? What possible reason could he have? Berserkers get tunnel vision when they obsess over something. Dagur himself has even admitted that they can get fixated on goals. I don't think his goal of making Hiccup pay would involve a bunch of people he didn't think either of them knew.
That said, it makes sense if Dagur killed them after prison. It also clears up a little detail from a missing time. We see Dagur go to the Reaper in rags, then see him in shiny new armor. I don't think that was on the Reaper. The Riders found hair, jewels, and scrolls. No armor. What could have happened is that Dagur then went to a nearby island (Heather's) to get supplies and they could tell that the Berserkers were escapees. If Dagur suspected this, he could have killed them to prevent going back to prison. Technically, this doesn't even need to be a conclusion they drew. Dagur makes it explicitly clear that he's not paying for weapons in "Have Dragon, Will Travel." He kills and takes what he wants when the original owners aren't around to complain. So, he might have gone there for armor and then killed everyone so that they could keep the gold.
I don't think it's in-character for younger Dagur to do that, though. He didn't automatically resort to lethal force back then. Smaller Dagur didn't go to Berk, raging war. He went there, suspicious and ready for a fight if his so-called allies had fire-breathing war machines. He didn't go to Outcast Island, planning to kill Alvin and take the Skrill. He went there to strike a fake deal and steal the dragon later. Surprisingly, Dagur wasn't as violent as you'd assume...yet. Later, killing was just his natural response to anything. So, it's absolutely in-character for bigger Dagur to kill an entire island of people and think nothing of it.
On a quick side note, it actually makes Heather look better too if she only had Windshear for some months vs all those years. So, she's seriously been searching for Dagur for THREE years??? Heather, he's in a prison. Do you just never talk to anyone? Do Vikings not gossip? I feel like information is going to spread about that new, deranged chief who wasn't in charge a year before he started a war and got arrested. Also, considering how she got outmaneuvered by Dagur and Shattermaster (who had been working together for 1 afternoon), it's way better if she didn't have the experience of multiple years with her dragon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Therefore, to make both of them look a bit better, I have the headcanon that she misspoke and he killed everyone after prison.

The placement of Gothi's hut is so so funny
I mean, she's the tribe's elder, I get it. But here's the thing, she's practically the only healer on Berk, the one people go to when they're sick or injured. And considering they are vikings, from a tribe that loves to fight ‘a normal amount’ and had been battling dragons for three centuries, it means they'd be usually receiving pretty severe and life threatening injuries on a norm. Things like stab wounds, burns, amputation etc. Pretty much the type of injuries that count as a medical emergency.
And her hut, is like a freaking tower, built on top of a very high rock pillar formation on the island. This old woman, the only healer in the village, has her 'clinic' in the most nonsensical spot for the bleeding out, on-verge-of-death patients. They really couldn't have given her a hut that's on the ground and more easily accessible. No, on Berk, you'd be dying and you'll have to climb up a tower to get to the only healer

it saddens me that there are people out there who haven't seen the shows or interacted with people who have seen the shows and genuinely think that snotlout is a bad person

I'm perfectly aware that (other than being part of his general sense of humor) sarcasm was a sort of defense mechanism for Hiccup, one that he used less and less as he got older and became better at defending himself physically as well as not needing to bc.. yknow, he's not a social outcast anymore, but they really couldn't let him stay sassy??? Like I'll never not be devastated at how he mellowed out with age

Map of Berk
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Credit to DanGref on DA for the larger map of Berk, I believe it was taken from one of the games - I usually say that those are Dubious Canon but since we have nothing else and it looks pretty close I'm including it on my map.
I made a better map of Berk, hopefully it's understandable? There's a couple of problems with it:
for one, Gobber's house in "Legend of the Boneknapper" is the same house as Snotlout & Spitelout's in "Race to Fireworm Island" ???? - so I left it as Gobber's since it's close to his Smithy and I'm putting the Shorts in a higher category of Canon than the shows I guess?
Astrid's house in "Team Astrid" is the same as the Armoury in "In Dragons We Trust" ???? - so I left it as the Armoury since it's seen in multiple episodes as "The Armoury" and Astrid's house is burned down.
Aaand I couldn't find the path to the Academy/Arena so I left it blank.
I would've liked to put things like The Cove, Bucket & Mulch's farm, the Path to Gothi's Hut, and the Beaches that they keep visiting onto the map, but there never seems to be a solid spot of any of them, so I'm presuming they're too far away to be on this map.

okay fuck you fuck all of you, riders/defenders of berk had some of the best characterization in the fucking franchise. that very first episode was on fucking point. snotlout obtains a dragon which has the ability to set himself on fire and the first thing he does is terrorise the local fishermen. that is SUCH a kid!snotlout move??? the twins slowly working out how to use their dragon for chaos... they go from yak tipping and watching hiccup wreck everything (basically what they would've already been doing pre-movie 1) to blowing up ships with barch in the span of like ten episodes. its perfect.
