Door een onzer redacteuren ROTTERDAM, 6 okt — Het gemeentelijk „Tehuis voor Ouden van Dagen" aan de Oostervantstraat, dat sinds 1906 duizenden bejaarden heeft gehuisvest, gaat verdwijnen. Wethouder G. Z. de Vos van sociale zaken zal op 9 oktober de laatste 130 bewoners uitgeleide doen. Ze verhuizen dan naar het nieuwe huize Boekholt aan de Robert Kochtstraat in Ommoord.

Huize Oostervant gaat dicht omdat het niet langer voldoet aan de eisen die tegenwoordig aan bejaardentehuizen worden gesteld. Toch is het in 1906 gebouwd vanuit voor die tijd zeer progressieve gedachten. Het maakte een eind aan een systeem van ouderdomverzorging in het stedelijke Armhuis op de hoek van het Vasteland en de Schiedamsedyk. Dr C. B. van der Leeden beschrijft in een gedenkboek ter gelegenheid van het 50jarig bestaan de verhuizing die als een curieuze gebeurtenis werd beschouwd. Het transport nam volgens krantenberichten verscheidene dagen in beslag. „Het eerst kwamen daarbij de zieken aan de beurt die, liggend op matrassen van het huis, in grote verhuiswagens werden vervoerd. De gezonden konden zich in groepen naar dc Oostervantstraat begeven, terwijl de meer gebrekkigen in rijtuigen werden overgebracht".

MOEGEWERKT Het aantal bewoners van het nieuwe Armhuis groeide allengs naar 700. Hoe „goed" ze het hadden blijkt uit een artikel waarin een plaatselijke courant de indrukken van zijn redacteur weergaf: „Het is een geruststellende gedachte, dat Rotterdam nu een huis heeft tot stand gebracht, waar de allerarmsten die geen thuis hebben en geen bed om hun moegewerkte lijven 's nachts neer te leggen, opgenomen kunnen worden, tot hun levenslampje uitgebrand zal wezen: en dat zij dit huis nu ingericht heeft zoals het een moderne, welvarende stad betaamt". Huize Van Oostervant is in de jaren vijftig grondig gemoderniseerd, maar is niet in staat geweest de voortschrijdende opvattingen over oudedagsverzorging bij te houden. Het gebouw leent zich daar ook niet voor. Minimumeisen als een eigen woonslaapkamer met toilet en kookgelegenheid zijn niet te realiseren

Willem van Duivenvoorde (ca.1290-1354) was de bastaardzoon van Philips van Duivenvoorde. Hij was de 'kamerling' van Graaf Willem III en wordt in de Rotterdamse bronnen voor het eerst genoemd op 19 juni 1326 toen de graaf hem 61/2 morgen land verkocht - gelegen in hoefslagen in Mathenesse - in Dirk Bokels ambacht.

De Oostervantstraat heet naar Willem van Oostervant, 1287-1337, onder de naam Willem III van 1304 tot 1337 graaf van Holland, Zeeland en Henegouwen.

"Sorry, Jessica! This year, there will be... no leftovers!"  -- John Carver

Director Eli Roth ventures back into the world of horror with a love letter to slashers with 'Thanksgiving.' It is a slasher film that harkens back to the subgenre's heyday when they were mass-produced almost on what felt like a weekly basis. The film follows in the footsteps of Robert Rodriguez's Machete and Jason Eisener's Hobo with a Shotgun as the third film that has been adapted from the trailers of the movie Grindhouse in 2007.

The Thanksgiving trailer was arguably the most popular featured in Grindhouse. Roth has been busy over the last decade producing, directing, and more actively acting. So it's surprising that it took so long for Thanksgiving to be made, considering it was only three years after Grindhouse that Machete was released. 

"We wanted to get it right," Roth told the New York Times. "We couldn't crack the story. The fun thing about doing a fake trailer is that you get to do the best parts of the movie, and nothing has to make sense. For years, we were thinking, why would someone dress like a pilgrim and go on a killing spree? How do you go from one kill to another without it feeling like a 90-minute version of the trailer?

"Then it occurred to me," Roth continued. "What if we pretend that a Thanksgiving movie from 1980 was really made. And the day it was released, it was so shocking and offensive that every print was pulled from the theater and ordered destroyed. The only thing that survived was one copy of the trailer that's been lurking around the darkest corners of 4Chan. This is the 2023 reboot of what that movie might have been."

Eli Roth's 'Thanksgiving' succeeds as a homage to the slashers of the 1980’s

Thanksgiving follows a group of friends in Plymouth, Massachusetts, after a horrific event at the local superstore RightMart on the eve of Black Friday on Thanksgiving day. Numerous people were injured and killed attempting to get into the store. Now, one year later, those who were responsible are being hunted and killed one by one by a killer dressed as a pilgrim in a John Carver mask. 

Following the template of 1978's Halloween, in 1980, Friday the 13th sparked a renaissance of horror films that could be based on seemingly almost any pseudo-holiday. Films like Silent Night, Deadly Night, New Year's Evil, and My Bloody Valentine were all centered around a holiday featuring a killer. 

The slasher film has always been the most prominent and popular in the horror genre. The sub-genre has delivered some of horror's most iconic characters, such as Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Ghostface. Due to the often low expectations of slashers in opting to bring an overall fun experience that focuses more on kills than story, a filmmaker can practice their craft almost without restriction. 

Roth has always been a director who pushes the envelope when it comes to bringing gore to audiences. He directed films such as Hostel and The Green Inferno, which were considered highly violent in their time. While not reaching the levels of pure splatter like last year's Terrifer 2, Thanksgiving's greatest strength is in its unique and fun kills that leave viewers closing grimacing and cheering right after.

Slashers tend to overly rely on the killer's characteristics to guide the manner of their kills. Thanksgiving doesn't fall into that trap, utilizing the unique locations to enhance some of the gore, including one victim being cooked alive. Often left out of discussions regarding what makes a great horror film is the atmosphere. The location of Thanksgiving pulls the audience further into believing it's the fall and holiday season.

One of the criticisms Roth has faced throughout his career is his writing. Thanksgiving was written by Roth along with Jeff Rendell. To the film's credit, they keep the script simple as a mixture between The Prowler and Friday the 13th as a tale of revenge. At times, the group of friends here are unlikeable but never reach the levels of unbearable that some of Roth's earlier work provided. 

The cast is helmed by the lead final girl, Jessica (Nell Verlaque), whose father owns RightMart. The teenage group of friends feels generic but never overstays their welcome, going overboard and being obnoxious. The two veterans holding the film together are Patrick Dempsey as Sheriff Eric Newton and Rick Hoffman as Thomas Wright. 

For fans of slashers, Thanksgiving is near perfection. It doesn't try to be anything more than a movie about a pilgrim-dressed killer out for revenge on a holiday. Those who grew up with an abundance of slashers in the 1980s will appreciate the work Roth and his team did with Thanksgiving. The film manages to implement its share of nostalgia for an often maligned era and does enough updating for modern audiences that can convert skeptics into new fans.

Rodan is Joseph’s pick and is one of his favorites among the classic kaiju movies. As opposed to later kaiju fare, Joseph likes the more serious nature of this film and appreciates the titular creature’s origin story. Daphne enjoys her first viewing of the Japanese version of Rodan and plentiful miniature work in the film. Whitney likes the color palette used in Rodan and enjoys all the military action. Rodan’s vapor trail tripped Jeff’s trigger and he was all about the boom-boom. He also fails miserably in his efforts to pronounce Rodan correctly. The Classic Era Grue-Crew also delves into the differences between the Japanese and the U.S. versions of Rodan, the voice actors used for dubbing, and the rigors of suit acting.

If you haven’t seen this kaiju gem in a while, now is a great time to check it out again. At the time of this writing, Rodan is available to stream on The Criterion Channel and HBOmax.

Madden 21 Brings Tons of Updates to Face of the Franchise

Madden 21 adds some much-needed meat to the bones of last year’s Face of the Franchise mode.

Madden 20‘s Face of the Franchise was incredibly barebones when it launched last year. Once you got out of college, the “story mode” had next to no story. For Madden 21, the team at EA Sports appears to be fleshing the mode out quite a bit. This go-around, you’ll take your star through high school, college, and his pro career. Hopefully, it gives players exactly what they want.

It looks like Face of the Franchise is getting several new storylines for you to potentially play through. Some of them are based on your draft stock, while others appear tied to how you perform. There’s even one that deals with you getting an injury. It’s not completely clear if these are dynamic, but my hope is that they add a bit of intrigue into what was a boring replacement for Longshot last year.

Joining Face of the Franchise for Madden 21 are a few actors you might’ve heard of before. Tye Sheridan plays your career-long rival, while Snoop Dogg and Rich Eisen play themselves. Oh, and the freaking Terminator himself is onboard. No, not Arnold Schwarzenegger, you goof. The best Terminator, Robert Patrick.

Unfortunately, fans of classic Franchise mode don’t have as much to look forward to. Oh, did I say “as much?” I actually meant nothing. The paltry list of Franchise mode updates is pitiful. Most of them just bring the rules of the game in line with changes the NFL made. Yet again, the fan-favorite mode is left on the back-burner. Maybe next year?

Madden 21 launches for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 25. It will come to PS5 and Xbox Series X once the two next-gen consoles release. If you want to read the team’s full gridiron notes, do so here.

5 winners, 2 losers from WR/TE drills at the NFL Combine

Albert Okwuegbunam posted one of the fastest times ever for a tight end, while Mitchell Wilcox took a football to the face.

Testing numbers at the NFL Combine can be unimportant for a lot of positions. It doesn’t really matter how fast an offensive lineman can run the 40-yard dash and no team is drafting a quarterback because of their impressive vertical jump.

Showing off that athleticism crucial for receivers, though.

Yes, some of the best pass catchers in NFL history — like Jerry Rice, for instance — didn’t shine at the NFL Combine. But it’s much harder for a prospect to convince a team he can get open if he doesn’t show the size, speed, and quickness to do so.

In 2019, Ole Miss receiver DK Metcalf stole the show with an outrageous performance. His skills won over the Seattle Seahawks, who picked him at the tail end of the second round. Metcalf proved his abilities translated well to the football field by finishing his rookie season with 900 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He also had a game-sealing grab in the playoffs that eliminated the Eagles.

There probably won’t be a performance as superhuman as Metcalf’s at the 2020 NFL Combine, but there were a few players who have stood out so far, both positively and negatively.

Here are the winners and losers among the receivers and tight ends in Indianapolis:

Winners

Albert Okwuegbunam, TE, Missouri

It seems more likely than not that no tight end gets picked in the first round this April. But the good news for this class is the lack of star power at tight end leaves a whole lot of room for unheralded prospects to shine.

Okwuegbunam snagged that opportunity with one of the speediest 40-yard dashes ever recorded by a tight end. The 258-pounder blazed down the path in 4.49 seconds.

And just to make sure everyone knew it wasn’t a fluke, Okwuegbunam followed it up with a 4.50-second dash on his next attempt. He finished with an official time nearly two-tenths of a second faster than any other tight end.

His performance isn’t completely out of left field. Dan Kadar listed Okwuegbunam as a player who could stand out at the NFL Combine, despite only catching 26 passes in the 2019 season. Before you blame him too much for that, consider George Kittle only caught 22 passes in his last season at Iowa.

Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah provided the perfect evidence that Jefferson had a great showing at the NFL Combine. When the LSU receiver took off down the track in Indianapolis, Jeremiah told Rich Eisen, “I don’t anticipate that we’ll see a really fast — well, never mind. Hey now!”

Just as Jeremiah was lowering the expectations for Jefferson, the receiver finished the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds. That’s a tremendous time for a receiver who already showed he can do everything else at an extremely high level.

If Jefferson wasn’t already a first-round pick, he made his case even stronger Thursday.

Chase Claypool, WR, Notre Dame

Claypool is bordering on tight end size at 238 pounds. But the weight definitely isn’t slowing him down. The Notre Dame pass catcher followed up a 4.45-second run in the 40-yard dash with a 4.43 on his next attempt.

That kind of speed is rare for a player as large as Claypool.

Claypool also put in 19 bench press reps and a 40.5-inch vertical, showing both strength and explosiveness to go with his speed.

Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame

Kmet is considered by most (including Kadar) to be the best tight end of the draft class. It seemed unlikely he’d wow many in on-field tests at the NFL Combine, though.

But his 4.70-second performance in the 40-yard dash was in the top five among players at his position.

The Notre Dame tight end told reporters earlier in the week his best-ever time in the 40-yard dash time was 4.69 seconds. By just about matching that time, Kmet bolstered his stock.

Donovan Peoples-Jones, WR, Michigan

Gerald Sensabaugh’s record-setting 46-inch vertical jump from 2006 still stands as the best mark in NFL Combine history. Peoples-Jones was just 1.5 inches away from tying it.

The 6’2, 212-pound receiver took flight in the vertical with a 44.5-inch jump that looks downright majestic in slow motion.

Peoples-Jones is a bit buried in a deep wide receiver class and his vertical won’t change the fact he never made a huge impact at Michigan. It does show he has explosiveness and a large catch radius, though. That should help Peoples-Jones stand out a bit.

Thaddeus Moss, TE, LSU

Moss is one of the more interesting prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft, not only because his dad is Randy Moss, but also because he developed into a damn good pass catcher at LSU.

He caught one touchdown in the Tigers’ Peach Bowl victory over Oklahoma and two touchdowns in the College Football Playoff National Championship win against Clemson.

Moss told reporters he wouldn’t participate in drills at the NFL Combine due to wear-and-tear from LSU’s extended season. His physical in Indianapolis revealed the problem is worse than that, though. According to Ian Rapoport, Moss has a Jones fracture in his foot that will require surgery to repair.

While Rapoport says the six to eight week recovery from the injury won’t cost Moss any time during the 2020 season. It will probably keep him from working out at all for teams prior to the draft. That news made the trip to Indianapolis a decidedly unfortunate one for Moss.

Door een onzer redacteuren ROTTERDAM, 6 okt — Het gemeentelijk „Tehuis voor Ouden van Dagen" aan de Oostervantstraat, dat sinds 1906 duizenden bejaarden heeft gehuisvest, gaat verdwijnen. Wethouder G. Z. de Vos van sociale zaken zal op 9 oktober de laatste 130 bewoners uitgeleide doen. Ze verhuizen dan naar het nieuwe huize Boekholt aan de Robert Kochtstraat in Ommoord.

Huize Oostervant gaat dicht omdat het niet langer voldoet aan de eisen die tegenwoordig aan bejaardentehuizen worden gesteld. Toch is het in 1906 gebouwd vanuit voor die tijd zeer progressieve gedachten. Het maakte een eind aan een systeem van ouderdomverzorging in het stedelijke Armhuis op de hoek van het Vasteland en de Schiedamsedyk. Dr C. B. van der Leeden beschrijft in een gedenkboek ter gelegenheid van het 50jarig bestaan de verhuizing die als een curieuze gebeurtenis werd beschouwd. Het transport nam volgens krantenberichten verscheidene dagen in beslag. „Het eerst kwamen daarbij de zieken aan de beurt die, liggend op matrassen van het huis, in grote verhuiswagens werden vervoerd. De gezonden konden zich in groepen naar dc Oostervantstraat begeven, terwijl de meer gebrekkigen in rijtuigen werden overgebracht".

MOEGEWERKT Het aantal bewoners van het nieuwe Armhuis groeide allengs naar 700. Hoe „goed" ze het hadden blijkt uit een artikel waarin een plaatselijke courant de indrukken van zijn redacteur weergaf: „Het is een geruststellende gedachte, dat Rotterdam nu een huis heeft tot stand gebracht, waar de allerarmsten die geen thuis hebben en geen bed om hun moegewerkte lijven 's nachts neer te leggen, opgenomen kunnen worden, tot hun levenslampje uitgebrand zal wezen: en dat zij dit huis nu ingericht heeft zoals het een moderne, welvarende stad betaamt". Huize Van Oostervant is in de jaren vijftig grondig gemoderniseerd, maar is niet in staat geweest de voortschrijdende opvattingen over oudedagsverzorging bij te houden. Het gebouw leent zich daar ook niet voor. Minimumeisen als een eigen woonslaapkamer met toilet en kookgelegenheid zijn niet te realiseren

Willem van Duivenvoorde (ca.1290-1354) was de bastaardzoon van Philips van Duivenvoorde. Hij was de 'kamerling' van Graaf Willem III en wordt in de Rotterdamse bronnen voor het eerst genoemd op 19 juni 1326 toen de graaf hem 61/2 morgen land verkocht - gelegen in hoefslagen in Mathenesse - in Dirk Bokels ambacht.

De Oostervantstraat heet naar Willem van Oostervant, 1287-1337, onder de naam Willem III van 1304 tot 1337 graaf van Holland, Zeeland en Henegouwen.

Every Fake Movie Trailer In Grindhouse | Screen Rant

In 2007, Grindhouse saw Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino teaming up to bring a horror double-feature experience with two very different films, but there’s a part of this project that has been either ignored or under-appreciated: the fake movie trailers. Grindhouse was a full experience with two feature-length segments, advertisements, in-theatre announcements, and fake trailers for upcoming films, all in the style of B-movies with filters that make the images look deteriorated and effects to make them look jumpy and old.

Planet Terror and Death Proof are the main attractions of Grindhouse, and they are very different from one another, although both fall into the category of “exploitation films”: Planet Terror is about zombies, and Death Proof is about a psychopathic stuntman. Very much like them, the fictional trailers are very different from each other, and some of them went from fake to full-length features a few years later.

Grindhouse had a total of five fake trailers, all of them from different directors. Robert Rodriguez not only brought Planet Terror to the project but also a trailer for Machete, starring Danny Trejo as the titular character. Machete is a former Mexican federale whose weapon of choice is a machete (of course), but is pretty skilled with firearms too. Machete went on to become a full-length feature in 2010, with the sequel Machete Kills released in 2013. Rob Zombie also brought a piece of his work with Werewolf Women of the SS. The title is pretty self-explanatory: the Nazis experiment to create werewolf women. The trailer starred Udo Kier, Sheri Moon Zombie, Sybil Danning, and Nicolas Cage. Like most of Zombie’s work, this trailer is not for everyone, but it’s a good addition to the Grindhouse experience.

Don’t was Edgar Wright’s contribution to Grindhouse, and it’s all about horror movie clichés. The trailer features a lot of well-known actors in very short appearances, such as Jason Isaacs, Matthew Macfadyen, Lucy Punch, Rafe Spall, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Mark Gatiss, MyAnna Buring, and many others. The title is a reference to all those things you’re not supposed to do in horror movies yet every character does (“don’t open that door”, “don’t look behind”), and it's the only trailer without dialogue. Thanksgiving was made by Eli Roth in the style of holiday-themed slasher films. It’s the most graphic trailer of the bunch, and starred Jeff Rendell as the killer pilgrim, with Jay Hernandez, Jordan Ladd, and Roth himself as some of his victims.

Finally, there’s Hobo with a Shotgun, a trailer that was shown at selected theaters and earned its spot because it won Rodriguez’s SXSW Grindhouse trailers contest. It was created by Jason Eisener, John Davies, and Rob Cotterill, and follows a vagabond with a shotgun who becomes a vigilante. The trailer became a full-length feature in 2010 with Rutger Hauer as the Hobo. Grindhouse was not only a way to bring the experience of watching exploitation films in multiple-feature format, but it was also an opportunity for other filmmakers to have as much fun and creative freedom as they wanted with their fake trailers, and in the case of Hobo with a Shotgun, an opportunity for new talents to showcase their work.
