Captain’s Log
Stardate 2024.03.01
Day 18
It’s cold again today. I hate being cold.
Simon woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. He’s been intentionally pushing buttons all morning. I wonder what it’s like inside his head. Sometimes I wish I could get an Inside Out like view of what drives him. I put him to work coding. I figure that if he’s going to push buttons, I can at least make sure they are not mine. Normally, I would insist that he change to language or social studies, but today, I’m just going to roll with whatever they are willing to do.
Yesterday afternoon I took the boys to a DJI education center where they got to play with Robomaster battle bots. The cost for classes is exorbitant so I looked into just buying the robots. Much cheaper. I told the boys that if they are serious about their coding and study hard, I would consider it. It’s still $500 per machine, so I’m going to need to see some serious devotion, but we have a goal to work toward.

why do wormfics keep using the phrase vulpine smile. it is driving me up the wall. can’t they use smug grin instead or something?
it's cause it's a fairly unique phrase that gets associated with lisa really early on in the story, in her first scene iirc, so they use it as a cornerstone of the character in the fandom in the same way that loads of other characters are written in fanfics in the same way they're introduced: robomaster, apathetic alec, parian & foil, etc

Ooo! New Roahm Robomaster!
Honestly felt kind of nice to take a night to just get sparked into an idea and go all in on producing some concept art, haha.

Basically eggman and wily team up to make a roboticizer that makes robot masters called roboticized masters
They kidnap all sonics friends and then send out metal and a fake megaman to frame the other for the kidnapping
Wily sets some of the robomasters loose on a jewel bank, and when mega man comes to stop them, they lure him into mobius
There mega and sonic battle until they get sent back to the mega world where they stop fighting after realizing they're both heroes
They divise a plan to travel to the special zone where eggman and wily have teraformed into a base
Opun arriving, they note the weirdness and battle some robomasters, saving each of sonics friends one by one
The doctors betray each other, and eggman tries to reset the world, but megaman and Sonic go Super to stop him
Silver plays no significant role besides showing up as a robomaster and maybe a random task that he does off screen

Silverman
((Ooh, Silverman looks kinda cool actually. (And different from how I remember him.)
The bit of the doctors betraying each other is funny. Imagine planning to betray your partner in crime only to find that your partner in crime had plans to betray you too.
I'm actually glad to know that Sonic's friends don't actually die, because if there's anything I know about the Mega Man lore, if a Robotmaster gets defeated, they explode into a bunch of orbs (and they don't usually come back after fighting them a second time).
Thank you for feeding this information to me.))

Mid Season Quick Reviews - Fall 17
Ancient Magus Bride
If you only watch one show this season, make it AMB. It’s a bit of romance, a bit of shounen, and a heaping helping of fantasy. Chise Hatori is a human with tragic magical abilities. With nothing left to care for in this world, she sells herself into slavery. She’s bought by the mage Elias Ainsworth who sees her potential as his apprentice and bride.
The focus is on their relationship as Elias and Chise go on various magical adventures. Of course there’s something wrong with a centuries-old shadow creature buying a teenage bride, but this isn’t a simple romanticization. AMB never tries to suggest that this is a healthy relationship. It has ups and downs, trust and betrayal, tender moments and abuse. In the abundant fantasy, it still feels real.
And the feel of this anime is unlike any other. The pacing is somewhat odd as it tends to linger. The soundtrack is sometimes enchanting and sometimes a bizarre comedy track. In another anime I might count those traits against it, but they works here. Every odd direction seems to add to the fantasy. It feels unique and magical.
★★★★★★★★★★ 10/10
Kino’s Journey
Star Trek on motorcycles. Okay, you probably want more than that, huh? Well then, Star Trek on talking motorcycles.
In a world where every city and most large vehicles are their own independent nations, each with a unique law or characteristic, the profession of “traveler” was born. Kino roams the world riding Hermes, a sentient motorrad. The contained, one-country adventures are perhaps the best possible use of the episodic format.
Kino is the archetypal blank slate through which the audience explores the world. Other characters are made with just the right level of depth as one-off appearances. The art and sound design excel at showcasing the beauty of this imperfect world. The only thing I really dislike is the CG when Kino is walking with their bike.
★★★★★★★★★☆ 9/10
Kekkai Sensen & Beyond (S2)
Kekkai Sensen has not been what I expected. Some manga readers have told me that season 1 did not follow the source material well and established quite a different tone. The episodic nature of this season is apparently a more faithful adaptation. While I’m not normally a fan of episodic shows, I’ve been loving it.
KSB follows Leonardo Watch and his colleagues at Libra, an organization of godly warriors. They reside in Hellsalem’s lot, a borough of New York that collided with a supernatural plane of existence and became home to all manner of dangerous beings. It’s very much monster of the week, in a way that allows a different protagonist to shine in each episode.
It’s a lot of fun. This is a show I’m always eager to watch. Animation and choreography are beautiful. Characters are interesting and vivid, though sometimes act as parodies of themselves, Zapp especially. And the OP, Fake Town Baby, is one of the few I don’t skip at this point and actually enjoy.
★★★★★★★★★☆ 9/10
Shokugeki no Soma (S3)
If you haven’t been keeping up, Shokugeki has a plot now. No, not a “plot,” an actual plot. Well, the “plot” is still there, now with story attached.
Yukihira is gunning for the Elite 10 during the obligatory culture festival arc, when Totsuki Academy changes hands. Azami Nakamura takes over and becomes a food dictator. New alliances are drawn and our protagonists become Rebels against the nefarious Central.
This season has not been as good as previous ones. It’s had weaker material to work with so far, but it’s about to get back to what it does well: head to head cooking battles. These past episodes have felt a bit rushed. Maybe that’s appropriate since the festival arc is really just a bridge between the Autumn Leaf Viewing and the Central takeover. I fully expect Shokugeki to get back in its stride shortly.
★★★★★★★✯☆☆ 7.5/10
Garo: Vanishing Line
This is the third installment in the Garo series, but you don’t have to watch the previous ones to enjoy it. Sword is a hulking man with a sentient motorcycle, Luke is Reaper from overwatch, Gina is a set of boobs that can kick your ass, and Sophie is an orphan. Together they fight a new monster each week and try to figure out the mystery of “El Dorado.”
It’s pretty straightforward. The selling point is the fight scenes, which are full of motion and energy. Episode one is far and away the best in that regard. The weekly Horror routine is growing stale, and it feels reluctant to really get into the El Dorado plot line. The cast is sufficiently introduced, so if next episode doesn’t move the story along I’m gonna take a star off my rating.
★★★★★★★☆☆☆ 7/10
Juuni Taisen / Zodiac War
A battle royale of super-powered warriors cosplaying as the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac. What makes this show remarkable is its unpredictability. Unfortunately, the pattern becomes clear after a few episodes. It’s now obvious which characters are or are not in danger of dying next.
This is not good. But it is tremendous fun. However, with the recent changes to Monkey’s character, it became a lot less interesting. I don’t want to say much more so I don’t spoil anything. But if you’re down for some good ol’ mayhem, Juuni Taisen will deliver.
★★★★★★★☆☆☆ 7/10
Black Clover
I didn’t drop this, per se, but I can’t watch it anymore. You see, I died while playing the Black Clover drinking game. That’s when you take a shot every time someone says “In this world magic is everything.” Hard mode: every time Asta screeches, omae wa mou shindeiru.
In all seriousness, I’m still undeservedly optimistic about this show. There’s potential here, it could become the best traditional big shounen. But it doesn’t seem likely. Asta becomes tolerable after a while, though that voice direction will never be good. The writing is awful. The animation is basic, punctuated by seconds of epicness. The humor is juvenile at best.
This probably isn’t worth watching, but I’ll let you know if it gets better.
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆ 5/10
RoboMasters
The gif I chose is a good representation of my experience watching the show. RoboMasters is the biggest disappointment of the season. The characters are all tsundere, what little we got was nothing special, and the plot felt incredibly forced.
★★ 2 stars, one for each episode that’s been subbed.
Dropped Shows:
Two Car
As a show staged entirely around character interactions, it’d be helpful if they weren’t all cliched parodies. These characters could have supported a more traditional sports shoujo, if only the focus was more on the relationships between teams instead of between partners.
Classicaloid (S2)
I want to say they were resting on their laurels this season, but did ClassicaLoid actually have laurels? Instead of watching this anime, just download the OST.

Doctors and word "sexy", because why not, it's 3 a.m. and I have to wake up at 7
First Doctor: Looks like someone who'd make others wash their mouth with soap if he hears them using the word ("Young Man! Yes, yes, you, mr. Chesterfield, what was that just now? How old are you, hm?! Well, you are clearly too young to use the word!"), but actually he'd be the one to call something "very sexy, very sexy indeed" at the most unexpected of all moments and then just run away with no explanation, chuckling mischievously.
Second Doctor: Completely forgot meaning of the word. Still used it anyway cluelessly. Until Jamie explained it to him one day. The Doctor listened and called Jamie "rather sexy, than", blushing slightly. And then proceeded to torture his recorder, playing "Twinkle twinkle little star" on it.
Third Doctor: Only the Six Doctor uses word "sexy" more frequent than him. Brigadier thinks he has no subordination and gives bad example to the stuff. But once he secretly smiles when the Doctor uses the word right in front of some high government official to describe the idea of a new nature preservation law.
Fourth Doctor: Finds blowing stuff up and fighting giant mutant rats very sexy. An example:
Doctor: Look at that rocket over there, Sarah Jane! Isn't it sexy?
Sarah Jane: Oh, it's very sexy, Doctor!
Doctor: Shame, it's full of highly dangerous weapons that will be banned on every civilised planet very soon in this century... So, I'm afraid, we'll have to blow it up until some of those solders gets into it and delivers those weapons on some innocent world! *proceeds to smile insanely*
Do not finds falling from big heights sexy. At all.
Fifth Doctor: Looks like someone who wouldn't now the word. Or who'd pretend not to... One day Tegan decided to explain it to him, just for the fun of it, but just ended up with Nyssa getting rather confused about life, universe and everything. Seeing the situation the Doctor paled a bit, than blushed a little, than started rambling something about lifespan of a Venusian infusoria and than intercepted the Master's TARDIS trace all of a sudden.
He blushed a little again.
Six(y) Doctor: Ah, Pery, just look at this sexy young man! So dashing, so outstanding!
Pery: Doctor. That's a mirror.
The Doctor: Exactly! Now, take a step away, don't obstruct me from admiering the defiance of sexyness itself!
Seventh Doctor: Finds manipulation, fighting lovecraftian horrors and killing hundreds to save millions sexy. And no, when the Master does it, it is called tyranny, world domination and genocide.
Eighth Doctor: Thinks the Universe is sexy. The feeling is not mutual.
War Doctor: Has more important things to worry about.
Ninth Doctor: Is not sure in anything anymore, but if there's something he can tell you certainly it's that daleks and PTSD are Not sexy At all.
Tenth Doctor: Looks like somebody who'd use the word 24/7, but actually said "sexy" only two times in his life and just to impress a companion.
Eleventh Doctor: Looks like somebody who'd use the word to call his car without completely understanding it. And is exactly that person, except one day Amy explained the word to him. Well, he proceeded to call his car "sexy", because what else!
Twelfth Doctor: At first used his sonic sunglasses because he thought they looked sexy. Than lost any way to see if anything is sexy at all. The sunglasses kinda lost their appeal afterwards.
Thirteenth Doctor: Thinks the Universe and repressing PTSD is sexy. The feeling is not mutual.
#Doctor Who#DW#Classical Doctor Who#New Doctor Who#DW memes#By the way#Shalka Doctor thinks getting drunk with his roboMaster is sexy and is not ashamed of that#And Ruth!Doctor finds that guns are rather sexy and is not ashamed of it either#And what about the Master?#Well the answer is rather obvious#Because all the genocide world domination and tyranny are just boring without the Doctor nearby in bounds or on their knees#I just listened Forty part 2 where the Master got himself his own auton Doctor and said and I quote#Oh the delights I will have with it#and than called that auton Doctor his toy and his pet#perfectly knowing by the time there's the real Doctor's consciousness in the thing and the's talking with the original you might say#So I just cannot stop laughing myself#oh it is more than 3 a.m. i'm gonna be so sleep deprived so very soon
