Pin-back badge for British musician Robyn Hitchcock, acquired sometime in the late 80s.
Back in the eighties, most people were not online. So even though I happened to be—scouring CompuServe for music-related content—to actually connect with artists you needed to join old-fashioned fan clubs.
The Robyn Hitchcock fan club (later a mailing list) was Fegmaniax, and by signing up I received occasional packets via the mail containing updates, tour info and even sometimes swag. This button was one such item I got via the fan club.
Featured is a character drawn by Robyn himself that appears on the cover of his “Heaven” 12″ single, as well as on the label of the Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians 1995 live album Gotta Let This Hen Out! I seem to recall this little guy might have been nicknamed “Reg,” from a line in “Brenda’s Iron Sledge” (Please don’t call me Reg / It’s not my name). [Edit: Thanks to a fellow Tumblr-er for pointing out his name is in fact THOTH.] But as a lapsed Fegmaniac, I can’t fully vouch for that.

Watching the fantastically quirky Robyn Hitchcock at City Winery. He sang a song about Arthur Kane & New York Dolls. I smiled. #RobynHitchcock #arthurkane #newyorkdolls (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU82vNoIlOR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Robyn Hitchcock...lucky enough to be old enough to have gone to some great gigs at The Marquee on Wardour Street...unlucky enough to be young enough to have missed all the legendary action at CBGB's

A Few Live Albums, no. 1. At first you’re thinking @robynhitchcockofficial is just so ...odd. Then you’re singing along, “Brenda’s Iron Sledge/Please don’t call me Reg, it’s not my name” “Lep Lep Leppo and the Joo Joo Joo Jooves” “You’ve got Hea-ea-eaven” “Listening to the Higsons/One night in November/And I thought I heard them signing/Sing “Gotta let this hen out.” ...that’s what I was singing, too. He’s kind of like if a Basil Wolverton drawing were a band. #vinyl #vinylcollection #livealbum #robynhitchcock #gottaletthishenout #whoa #oh #treadmillsoundtrack #ellipticalsoundtrack (at Noblesville, Indiana)
