Law & Order, Season 23, episode 5: "Last Dance"

Blah, blah, blah, rich tech mogul commits murder to cover-up that he's a sexual predator. Variation on a tried-and-true story that the show has used since time immemorial.

But they had to make it more complicated to write Jack McCoy off the show.

@albatrossisland and @monidon, this one's for you.

In Seasons 18 and 19, you had Governor Donald Shalvoy and he was very clearly a fictionalized version of former NY Governor Eliot Spitzer. I guess they didn't want to anger the current NYC Mayor, Eric Adams, by having a fictionalized version of him being corrupt. But in the era of #MeToo where formerly untouchable powerful men (for decades) got away with all sorts of sexually predatory actions, it strains credulity that someone would not simply cut their losses and distance himself from the suspect. But you need an antagonist, right?

I'm often not a fan of the criticism that something is contrived. A story is a story and the actions a character takes are written to lead to a certain point. Everything is contrived in fiction. It's how well you do it.

Since the show came back, the writers show they simply cannot do it well. Everything has gotta be a twist, curve-ball, or an absurd social commentary (and I'm saying that about a show that did social commentary since episode ONE). If anyone is wondering where my gripe is on that last one, it goes back to my bone to pick with Nolan "Spineless Coward" Price giving IMMUNITY to a SCHOOL SHOOTER so he could PROSECUTE THE FATHER for the shooting.

Now, do I believe (in certain cases) parents should be held responsible for the actions of their children in this case? Absolutely. The Ethan Crumbley case in Michigan is a perfect example! There NOT definite warnings signs: There were FUCKING FIVE-ALARM BELLS and red flags the size of football fields that something was seriously wrong with the kid and he needed help, not for his mother to buy him a fucking gun. Parents were charged without any immunity. I still hold that against the writers.

Rick Eid's run as show-runner has demonstrated a clear lack of knowledge of character history on the show (Jack in particular), a lack of even the loosest understanding of the law works in the show's universe, and a desperate need for actual lawyers as consultants or on the writing staff.

I'm also convinced that writers hate Hugh Dancy. The guy has acting chops, he was wonderful in HANNIBAL. But like… refer to my earlier description of Nolan Price.

Which brings us to Jack's sendoff and the overall story.

Mayor Payne? Yeah, that's certainly subtle.

I often think back to how Jack (and Mike Cutter) fought back against the GOVERNOR and they can't handle the freaking mayor? Writers, what the fuck?

I guess where the writers got something right was Jack believes in justice for the victim, regardless of who you are. And they gave Jack one last courtroom battle. And, on one hand, it is fitting. They wanted Jack to go out in a figurative blaze of glory. He was alone in the court, no second chair. I do wonder if he thought about all the second chairs he's had and how they helped him along the way (I am getting weirdly emotional writing this). And despite the fact he got burned, he managed to burn his enemies on the way out.

But this isn't the end I wanted.

Sometimes, a low-key ending is suitable for a character who worked (by my own calculation) 50-plus years in the DA's office (perhaps closer to 60 years). Who tried some significant cases, contributed to case-law that the show SHOULD HAVE REFERENCED, mentored each of his second chairs after Claire and Jamie. Mentored Mike Cutter.

Jack simply deciding just to retire and not run for re-election and spend the rest of his days fixing his relationship with his daughter, spend time with his grandson, write a book, maybe be a talking-head on legal shows (no, I can't see that), fine. But I wish they could have convinced Sam Waterston to finish out the season, maybe recording something so they show a goodbye party or SOMETHING to start next season, and then have the newly-elected DA introduced. That would have been more satisfying.

As for everything else about this episode. Couldn't the writers, I don't know, research and clarify their own damn show?

All Executive Assistant District Attorneys. I know there was some debate on whether or not Nolan Price was actually an EADA. But now he's Deputy District Attorney? What? Writers, there are other EADAs in the DA's office. I realize that the writers have always played fast-and-loose on the hierarchy of the fictional DAs office. SVU had Chief Assistant District Attorney Charlie Philips who spoke of "assigning" a case to Jack McCoy, which I always took more as a administrative role versus a trial role, which put him above Jack in whatever hierarchy worked in the show.

But there were times it very much seemed like Jack WAS the next person in charge if the DA was unavailable until his own appointment.

And then you have the board shown in Season 21 where it seems they had dug it out of storage since it still hate Mike and Connie listed, with Mike being "Chief Assistant District Attorney" before they changed it to "Nolan Price" by the next episode.

I've always been frustrated with the sloppiness of the writing since the show came back and this just adds to the pile.

"It's been a hell of a ride."

It has. I started this show in September of 1998 and even in the periods I didn't watch it too much, there was some comfort that Jack was always there. And I delayed watching this because I just couldn't accept the end.

And now I have.

S18E12 Submission (the wine scene with Lara Flynn Boyle? WHEW!) S18E15 Boogeyman (mike is sooooo unhinged in the last scene) S19E1 Rumble (his closing is especially great here knowing how conflicted he is about having to give it, love the genuine conflict with mccoy) S19E21 Skate or Die (the scene with him saying a line in russian lives rent-free in my head) S2018 Brazil (sad "my parents sucked" mike, the questioning of Tony Hale at the end gets me 😭😭😭 every single time) S20E16 Innocence (he gets soooo put through the ringer in this one and contrary to popular belief MIKE DID NOTHING WRONG IN THIS EPISODE) S20E15 Brilliant Disguise (just love seeing my man so deranged) S20E9 For the Defense (Mike melting into an embarrassed mess when he realizes basically everyone and their mothers knows he has a crush on Connie)

Fox at the end S18E13 Angelgrove - his closing kicks ass (as per usual) but idk why i liked this one especially S19E22 The Drowned and the Saved - confrontation with Governor Shalvoy (iykyk) S18E16 Strike - Mike talking with Jack about how much Connie kicked his ass in court 🥰🥰🥰 S18E17 Personae Non Grata - THE SCENE WITH THE BONES S19E4 Falling - when he's sitting in the hospital room "you just have to try to save who you can save" 😭😭😭 S19E5 Knock Off - having to stay behind in Dargerville with Lupo and they're just a coupla guys bein dudes S20E20 The Taxman Cometh - "everyone's calling me Boomerang Mike" S20E4 Reality Bites - Mike just messing with Connie because she has to be in a reality show in order to get access to information that will help them in a trial lmao

Law & Order: How Hugh Dancy's Price Picks Up Where Cutter Left Off

I miss my man Cutter, he was the best in the courtroom.

Though he could be tough he was also the absolute cutest, even when he turned fixer for Jack and got rid of Shalvoy he was adorable.

I also loved how Linus Roache and the writers weren't afraid to show Mike's embarrassment if he over reached and things went against him, like in the Taxman Cometh "they're calling me boomerang Mike out there" and then there's his little crush on Connie.

Married at First Sight - Day 15

NOTE: It seems that around this time the cooking bug was fixed… or at least improved, meaning that sims were not just constantly cooking and complaining they were hungry.  As such the extent to which I was actively meddling in that aspect of the gameplay greatly reduced.

It was a quiet morning at the apartments, with nothing noteworthy happening before Venkat and Riley set out for their visit to the Shalvoy family.

Family Visit - The Shalvoy Family

Location: Base Game Modern mansion by fr0905

Arriving at Venkat’s family home in Willow Creek, he and Riley were in the mood for fun.  They wasted no time in turning up the stereo, and whilst Venkat’s sister Peyton was unmoved by their invitation to dance she was also entirely unsurprised.

Taking a quick coffee break, Venkat sat down with his brother Dale to bring him up to speed on how things were going with him and Riley.  Three-quarters of the way through the competition Venkat is glad to have been matched with Riley and cannot imagine having a better time with anyone, but that chemistry seems to be purely platonic, which somewhat defeats the object.  Dale thinks that Venkat is over-thinking things.

NOTE: I kinda want to make a spin-off focusing solely on Dale - he seems like a… character.

At length Riley and Peyton joined them, and they all settled down to watch Chateau du Landgraab.  Dale exclaimed that this was his favourite movie, and fortunately the others had seen it enough times to not be bothered by Dale’s running commentary.

After the movie Venkat’s father Colten appeared.  Everyone else decided to give him and Riley some space to get to know each other, which may not have been the best move as Colten was soon interrogating Riley over his family background and career progress.  Nothing Riley said seemed to please him…

Dale and Peyton soon returned to rescue Riley, and Peyton had Dale and Riley in hysterics with her colourful anecdotes, whilst a glowering Colten stomped off in search of Venkat.

Colten found his son upstairs on the computer, and much to his disappointment Venkat had no time for his father’s negativity, explaining that even if there was no romantic spark between himself and Riley he was still a very good friend.

Back downstairs Venkat’s mother Cherish had returned home and seemed to take a far more amicable view of Riley.

Before long Cherish was telling Riley enthusiastically about several embarrassing moments from Venkat’s childhood, which Riley was sure to file away to tease Venkat over later!

Peyton went to find out where Venkat and her father had got to.  She found them crowded around the computer with Venkat’s other brother Cohen watching work-out videos and debating the merits of different techniques.

As the visit came to an end Venkat said his goodbyes to his family.  Taking his brother by the hand, Dale reminded Venkat to just relax and stop overthinking everything.

Back at the apartments…

Riley told Lauryn and Julian all about his day with the Shalvoy family, and how everyone had been really nice except for Colten (and Cohen, who he had barely seen).  Lauryn explained to Riley that there were aspects of his personality that other people would find aggravating but that he should not care about their opinions…

This did not have the reassuring effect she had hoped.

As the evening went on several of the contestants gathered in one of the apartments to eat, chat and dance, and all the women appeared to be getting on well.

Lauryn and Julian decided that they needed some time on their own away from the other contestants so took a late-night trip to the park, where Julian amused Lauryn with tales of strange creatures lurking in the dark.

After this they headed to the museum and compared ideas for decorating their ideal home.

Once they got back, Chensey caught up with Lauryn and made it clear she had forgiven her for her remarks about Venkat’s dancing the previous week, wrapping her up in a reassuring hug.

Lauryn also managed to make up with Riley by expressing her admiration for his culinary prowess.  Riley was happy to accept the extended olive branch and the two of them stayed up late so Riley could provide Lauryn with advice as she prepared a meal for the following day.

NOTE: By this point in my gameplay I had gone from finding Lauryn kinda boring to her actually being my favourite.  She means well, but just seems to have a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time…

Jack McCoy / Ambition

Imagine accompanying Jack to a gala: 

Sorry guys! I’ve been really busy trying to study for the LSAT so I haven’t written much in the past two or three days. I’m going try tonight or tomorrow to get some writing done, but there are only so many hours in the day unfortunately. Here is an old Jack imagine I wrote a while back that I never posted. Some dialogue is taken from Law and Order (the Shalvoy/Jack scene) but I do not claim any of that! I hope you enjoy! 

Jack adjusted the bow tie, frowning deeply at it. He didn’t much prefer ties, neither regular or bow. However, there was something especially infuriating about tying a bow tie and never having it quite be straight. Jack sighed, undoing the infernal knot for the third time. He heard heels clicking from behind and turned. 

You looked beautiful, not that it usually ever surprised him. 

You were dressed in a long black gown, open from the back, the fabric hugging your curves and a sweetheart neckline to boot, that framed the pearl necklace he gave you perfectly. Modesty was a trait your family had drilled into you from a young age, and it reflected in your choice of clothing, but this dress was low cut, well lower when compared to much of what you wore. Your black hair was in a pleated braid, pinned up in the back with about a million bobby pins. Your lips were painted a passionate red, your cheeks a rosy pink. Your expression was that of amusement, lips curled in a teasing smile, but Jack’s very breath was taken away. 

“Having some trouble?” You teased. 

Jack only smiled, as you walked up to him, and began to retie his bow tie for him. He watched you, taking pleasure in you doing this domestic task for him. A wife fixing a man’s tie, it was so simple, but it affected Jack so much. It made him appreciate you, and all you did for him. From helping him tackle moral and legal dilemmas to keeping him sane from his troublesome ADAs to making sure he looked appropriate for work. You finished, satisfied with your handiwork. 

“There, it’s perfect.” You grinned, and Jack couldn’t help, but lean in for a kiss right then. You seemed to welcome it, arms wrapping around his neck loosely, enjoying having him against you. “What was that for?” 

“To tell you how gorgeous you look tonight,” You blushed slightly, “And to thank you for your help.” 

“You wouldn’t be able to charm Shalvoy, especially with a crooked tie,” You winked, kissing him. “Come on, we’re going to be late.” 

“You’re going to see Shalvoy again tonight,  right?” Cutter said to Jack, just as he entered the elevator.  Jack had just finished meeting with them about the case, hoping to hear some good news. Instead, he was given a mission: use his pull on Shalvoy to help close this case. 

“Y/N is waiting at the gala for me,” Jack told them, sighing, as he pressed the down button on the elevator. 

“Give her our regards, Jack.” Connie added, just as the elevator doors closed. He sighed. Cutter wanted him to convince Shalvoy to put the pressure on him to indict Donna, but the only problem was, Jack didn’t know if that was possible. 

“It’s his decision, Jack,” Shalvoy told his, as they strolled the upper levels of the gala. He couldn’t find you, as he had forgotten that godforsaken cellphone you had given him, and you were around here somewhere, but he had no trouble finding Shalvoy. “I’m the governor of New York, not the District Attorney of Clinton County.” 

“You weren’t the District Attorney of Clinton County when you called him the last time,” Jack pointed out. 

“And I was overstepping him,” He explained, shaking his head. “How would you like it if I told you who to prosecute?” 

“I wouldn’t,” Jack admitted, hands in his pockets. 

“I have big plans for state, Jack. Big plans that I know you support,” Shalvoy told him, “We have to use our political capital wisely.” Just then, Shalvoy’s wife approached the pair, drink in hand. 

“Jack McCoy, how the heck are you?” Giving him a kiss on the cheek, Jack smiled at her warmly. 

“I’m being enlightened by your husband, as usual,” Jack told her, conceding, hands in pocket. 

“Tom’s got you fooled too?” She joked, as Jack chuckled. “How’s your lovely daughter?” 

“Great,” Jack told her, “She just got a new job in San Diego,” 

“San Diego?” She said, impressed. “It’s our loss. By the way, I just saw your wife. Fantastic woman. She’s so accomplished, so intelligent. She mentioned she was looking for you,” 

“You didn’t come together?” Shalvoy frowned, but Jack waved him off. 

“I had to drop by the office to get something. Where was she?” Rita remembered seeing you by the balcony. You were probably trying to escape all the questions and people. You were never one for these events. “Thank you, I better find her before she thinks I’m spending a late night at the office.” 

“Thank you so much for coming, Jack. It really means so much. Give Y/N our regards as well.” She told him warmly. 

“Good to see you too, Rita. I’ll be sure to pass on the message,” With that she left, and Shalvoy watched her go, looking to follow. 

“As for your case, Jack, would it help if you told them that the governor was taking a personal interest?” And with that, he left, and Jack was left with not much help at all. He sighed, walking towards the balcony to find you.  

He spotted you leaning against the railing. You were alone, looking up at the stars. You were checking your phone incessantly, probably waiting for a text from him that would never come. You pouted at your phone screen, your reflection visible in the screen. He heard you audible sigh. Jack smiled, sneaking over, and wrapping his arms around you in a second. You tensed at first, until you heard him murmur a greeting in your ear. You relaxed immediately, leaning against him. He hated to think what you had thought before you realized it was him. “I was looking for you,” You told him drily. You were irritated, apparent in the purse of your lips and the click of your teeth at the end of your short sentence. 

“I know, I’m sorry,” He sighed, pressing his chin to your shoulder. “Connie and Mike send their regards, along with Governor Shalvoy and his wife,” You turned to face him, back against the railing, as he leaned next to you, frown on his face. 

“I’m guessing Shalvoy didn’t give you the answer you wanted,” He shook his head. You wrapped your arms around him. “It’s okay, Jack. Mike and Connie will figure something out. Don’t worry so much,” 

“How can I not?” Jack sighed, running his hands through his hair. 

“I know one way,” You captured his lips in a passionate kiss, and he pursued it, arms wrapping around your waist, while yours went around his neck. “Let’s go home. This gala is just full of boring old people,” Jack raised an eyebrow. “Not you, but other people.” Jack pressed a quick kiss to your neck, before shaking his head, much to your disappointment. 

“I have to network if I want to keep the position as D.A. And you’ll have to play the role of the supportive, powerful wife.” You rolled your eyes, but nodding. You had been there every step of the way through this election, through the media madness and the press conferences, you stood by his side proudly. He always felt calmer with your presence; a reassurance that no matter what, you were always by his side. You kissed him once again, fixing his tie and pushing his hair back. 

“I think I can manage that.”
