raven eyes roll up as her head hangs back. “oh my god, forgot i was talking to a goldfish.” alex is still vaguely amiable when she sets her hands on jeanie’s shoulders, raises doubtful brows at the girl. “since when do you need to hear the plan before agreeing to it? okay, stick with me here,” she pulls her hands away to pin them to her own hips. “the first part’s the trickiest... we have to go to a degrassi school dance.”

she’s on her third glass of champagne stolen from whatever careless caterer was wondering around. because there’s no way callie could make it through one of her mothers extensive christmas parties fully sober. she’s done well, hiding in corners to avoid small talk with people whose name she could never remember. until eric. posture leans against her wall, head turning and tilting at the other with an unamused look on her face. her lips purse, though, and brow raises at his words. “ okay? “ because she can’t tell if that was really a compliment or not. “ why are you bothering me? ”

– THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS AND MARCO dashes off to find dylan, leaving . . . just ellie. paige has had a fair amount of champagne already, nursing an empty glass between her hands as the seconds tick down on the clock, inching closer to midnight. it’s not as if you like her, after all, it’s ellie nash, bringer of darkness, purveyor of snarky remarks, attitude of total doom and gloom. the fact that you hang out at all is by pure happenstance, the crux of a plethora of mutual friends, because you couldn’t be more different.

five, four . . . 

and still, the countdown continues and paige makes no real effort to move, locked on to the redhead’s hazel-eyed gaze. she inhales sharply – it’s decision time, either make a beeline to the cute guy that she was talking to earlier or . . . rock ellie nash’s world, so to speak. her eyes drift to ellie’s lips.

three, two . . . 

it’s definitely, definitely the champagne, but she acts on impulse – it’s only two steps to close the distance between them, a result of the closeness they’d been hovering between for the past few minutes, actually, perhaps inadvertently. still, paige michalchuk isn’t going to do anything, and that includes a midnight kiss to ring in the new year.

lips parted ever so slightly, her free hand resting on the side of ellie’s neck in a deliberate motion. it’s a little softer than she expects, from a girl with such a harsh personality, and before paige can register the moment further, she pulls away. “ happy new year, eleanor. for good luck, ” grin is cheeky, wearing a little less of the bubblegum pink gloss than she was moments before. she’s got to try and seem unfazed by such a thing, her pride won’t let her reveal that ellie got her heart racing, even just a little. the tip of her thumb drags along the side of mouth with a thoughtful huff, “ please tell me i’m not wearing any of your dollar-store lipstick. ”

“yeah?” he pointedly doesn’t look at her, but eyes crinkle with a forced smirk. like he’s smug, prideful. inside he’s groaning at the thought. freshly distracted gaze flickers over the innards of his car, hood open wide. “knew they had the hots. so, what’d they say about me? anything good?” playful, like he’s talking about a chick. eventually he turns to her, humor now lilting more sincere, curious. “-- that what you do on your weekends? listen to a police scanner.”

‘   long enough to wish i could time travel and un-see... all of that.   ‘   one hand holds up her hockey gear and the other motions towards jt. catching him parading around in the mascot outfit was not what she had scheduled when she decided to take a few hours to practice her scoring. a few more steps and she’s equally inside the gym as he is, brows lifted up as her free hand drops to her side.   ‘   seriously ━━  what are you doing? oh, gee.. tell me you’re not going to be doing that at the game. you looked like you had squirrels in your pants !   ‘

eric was never the type to beg, especially when it came to girls. on the rare occasion he wanted a girl back, he’d get her. easy. but he was always on the receiving side of things, the one who decided if they would get back together, and never the other way around. and yet, here he was, taking an unexpected detour from the popwell’s bathroom to slip into sunny’s room. “sunny, come on,” eric says, hushed tone to avoid being heard by zac. "we’re good together. we can’t be done. i made a mistake—i should have just walked you home regardless.” regardless of not wanting to tell zac. eric still doesn’t, because who knows what that’d do to their years of friendship. why couldn’t sunny understand that?

sunny isn’t good at this, rejecting and moving on. she’s a girl who lives for the attention, lives for the idea of love and comfort. it’s why she was okay keeping things under wraps for awhile, why she was okay with it just being them because at least she had him. and of course she was afraid of zac finding out, zac’s been overprotective of sunny since they were kids, rarely approving in any guy she was interested in and always forbade her from being with his friends. but she’s reached her limit, her breaking point after seeing eric flash that charming smile at another girl like sunny wasn’t even there. lips tighten as she tilts her head sideways at him, her pink nails clenching onto her blue sheets as she watches him. “ yeah, eric, you should have, but you didn’t. you just, walked away from me, from us, even after i told you if you did it’ll be over. “ she’s trying to be quiet and calm, but she’s feeling tense. “ i wanna be with someone who isn’t afraid to be seen with me, someone i can go out and hold hands with instead of having a wall between us. i just, it’s obvious i care for you more than you care for me and i’m doing us both a favor by ending things now, so we can cut our losses and move on. “
