So I saw two movies in a row where someone gets shot in the thigh with a crossbow dart (and has to pull it out), HUSH and Caveat. Then the next two films I watched both featured people pissing themselves from fear (Final Destination and Incident in a Ghostland). What does it meeeeannn???
Yesterday I watched a really interesting, and by interesting I mean sad, “horror” movie from Iceland called Rift (Rökkur). I mean,I guess it’s technically more a horror movie than any other genre, but really it’s two men holed up in an isolated summer house during December, haunted by the ghost of their dead relationship. There’s also sleepwalking, stalking, suicidality, mysterious strangers in red cars, heartbreaking confessions, a guy with a boxcutter, and a lady at the next farm who raises tiny fluffy horses. The actors playing Gunnar and Einar have elfish Icelandic faces, and I definitely wanted to hang in to the end to find out where all this twisty strangeness was headed. But it was sad. At one point it was so sad I forgot for several minutes that there was haunted horror stuff going on (credit to the actors and director). Call it horror tragedy. Worth a watch, minimal gore, no jump scares, but some dread and some blood.
youtube
Today I realised the month is almost over so I really should finish off with some scary movies i know I already like, to go out on a high note. So I went to rent You’re Next on Prime, but saw the well-reviewed horror comedy Tucker and Dale vs. Evil was available for free and decided to give it a try. So glad I did; that movie is so funny and so cute! It’s from Canada!
A pair of sweet southern boys who’ve just bought a vacation home (a derelict cabin) are mistaken for hillbilly murderers by a gaggle of college kids, who start accidentally killing themselves and each other in hilarious, horror movie ways. This is not a silly parody on the level of Scary Movie or the like; it’s actually a rom com set in a horror movie framework. The jokes and gags are good, the romance is believable (Dale is incredibly sweet; Allie is a hot hot girl who grew up on a farm and doesn’t really fit in with her friend group). There is a little gore, but it’s mostly in the form of ludicrous amounts of spurting blood played for laughs.
Tumblr media
Tucker and Dale rescue Allie (Cerie from 30 Rock!) from drowning while the group are skinny dipping, and despite their efforts to notify the college kids (standing in the woods shouting, “College kids! We have your friend!” for some reason doesn’t play the way they think it will), all they get for their trouble is chased and almost murdered. In the end, Dale rescues final girl Allie from a truly silent-movie-style predicament, and then they go bowling. It’s cute.

RP Hooks ––– –
Demands of the Wood - Native Viera may have heard of Rakhar Village as a home to a clan with bizarre, warlike customs and an unfriendly populace. Old tales of Rakhari witches abducting children and practicing dark magic can sometimes be heard in western Othard.
Temptation Lieth in the Forbidden  -  Rjvn has had years of study of several lesser known and often forbidden magical disciplines, and would be willing to part with these ancient secrets if the right student came along.
Dark Passenger -  Rjvn makes her residence deep in the Shroud, and must always be under the effects of powerful enchantments to obscure herself from the Elementals. Those on the fringes of Gridania’s society may find common ground with her, or allies of the Seedseers may be seeking to bring her to justice for her sins against the forest.
Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts -  Rjvn can be called upon for courtly advisement, her arcane expertise far exceeding that of most buttoned up scholars and prostrating conjurers.
Song of Thorns -  In a company of heroes, Rjvn offers the voice of pragmatism, always willing to commit repugnant deeds that others refuse in pursuit of a greater good.
Mysterious Mist - Rjvn’s aether is highly volatile, described by some as resembling a shattered mirror, endlessly reflecting unto itself. Any aether sensitive character would be able to sense something amiss with her.

Contact Information  ––– –
My preference is usually to RP in game, but I am perfectly willing to make accommodations. I generally prefer more adventure/intrigue focused RP with this character, but some casual slice of life to get our characters acquainted is always welcome. Please note that this character is not available for sex or romance under any circumstances, and I do not prefer to write extremely graphic violence.
Feel free to contact me here on Tumblr, or on Discord at Valla#9870.
Thank you!

A new OC in the Twili family! Meet Faldhyna!
She’s an artefact and ritual specialist, follower of Sage Rokkur’s teachings. She’s also Great Archivist Xokurr’s assistant and her work is to collect, to take care and to keep track of all artefacts used through the Twilight Realm, especially if they’re a loan from the Royal Archives or the Fortress of Twilight. She was chosen for her great intuition, her sharp magic senses and her ability to “tame” powerful artefact if needed.
In her early years, she belonged to the same friend circle as Etheru, Ethyur and Mirazek. However, she left the main islands when she still was a young child, in order to start her initiation to rituals and magic. Before her departure, she made a promise to get back to her friends and received a very sweet gift from one of them (a bracelet that she keeps preciously). Finally, years later she comes back to fulfil her duty, ready to meet her friends again and to live her new adventures.
Notes: She's a very sweet nature and an amazing dancer (a talent that she also uses during rituals).

ALBUM REVIEW: Solstafir - Endless Twilight of Codependent Love - Season of Mist
ALBUM REVIEW: Solstafir – Endless Twilight of Codependent Love – Season of Mist
For the most part, Solstafir’s seventh full-length album follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, 2017’s Berdreyminn (Season of Mist). The songwriting still largely favors the band’s subdued side with influences ranging from Post Punk, Prog Rock, and Ambient greatly informing the Post Metal whole. Tracks like ‘Rokkur’ and ‘Her Fall From Grace’ are heavy on atmosphere with extensive space to…

I was thinking about dogs and playing with the idea of a dog book after the style of Watership Down and Hunter’s Moon, and all of a sudden, this “footnote” pops into my head.
“Dogs recognize four distinct sexes: rokku, rokkur, heh-rokku, and heh-rokkur (rendered respectively in the text as bitch, dog, not-bitch, and not-dog.) By convention, those who are spayed or neutered use, and are referred to with, singular they pronouns; however, dogs who were altered later in life frequently continue using the pronouns for their birth sex.”
Like, this was going to be something I just played around with in my head while watching the puppers romping, but apparently it’s Serious.

[Fantastic Fest Review] RIFT Explores Haunting Isolation in Iceland
New Post has been published on https://nofspodcast.com/fantastic-fest-review-rift-explores-haunting-isolation-iceland/
[Fantastic Fest Review] RIFT Explores Haunting Isolation in Iceland
Rift (Rökkur) is a subtle horror film that explores every nook and cranny of the typical Horror convention, while still remaining a film of its own. We spend much of the film wondering just what shape our foe could take. But all the while we appreciate the journey the film takes us on. The Icelandic countryside is a gorgeous and haunting setting for a film about loss and loneliness.
Months after they broke up, Gunnar receives a strange phone call from his ex-boyfriend, Einar. He sounds distraught, like he’s about to do something terrible to himself. Gunnar drives up to the secluded cabin where Einar is holed up and soon discovers that there’s more going on than he imagined. As the two men come to terms with their broken relationship, some other person seems to be lurking outside the cabin, wanting to get in.
This film is a ballet. It effortlessly weaves between the spooky story it wants to tell us, and the stubborn nature of our complicated characters. There are ghosts to explore, but our heroes force themselves to wallow in the irreparable damage they’ve caused to each other. They languish in the pain of a dead relationship, and we wallow with them; gawking as they pick at a healing scab.
Einar (Sigurdur Thor Oskarsson) is wild, and youthful. But he’s lost. In an effort to get away from it all, he stays at his family’s cabin in a secluded outpost. The terrain is vastly beautiful, but isolating. One night, fuelled by alcohol, loss, or both – he leaves a haunting and slightly foreboding voicemail message with his ex- Gunnar (Björn Stefánsson). It seems there is unfinished business between the two, as even though Gunnar has moved on and is in a new relationship, he races to Einar’s rescue.
When Gunnar arrives, however – Einar seems to be in little distress at all. He chalks the entire phone call up to late-night nerves. Despite the brush-off, Gunnar decides to stay; it’s all under the pretense of a possible burglar or haunting plot, but we know these two have long unfinished business and conversations unsaid.
The tension raises considerably that first night when something real goes bump in the night. Gunnar immediately turns to investigation mode, visiting the cabin’s single neighbour down the lane and exploring an abandoned building not too far. A mysterious child in red appears, but we learn it’s very easy to lose one’s bearings alone in the countryside. Gunnar descends farther and father into the mystery, all while the the slumbered emotions of his and Einar‘s tumultuous past comes to a head.
Rift is a hypnotic film from start to finish. Despite an odd found-footage sequence that loses me a bit near the climax, this film is a chilling drama that kept my focus. Up until the final moments I had no concrete genre for which to pin it down. We all get a little bit lost in Iceland, chasing the ghosts of an unfinished relationship, and something all-together more spooky.
3/4 eberts

Let me introduce the Sages of Twilight!
Each sage represents a domain of magic, since it is an essential part of the Twili culture and of their daily life as rightful descendants of the Interlopers. Those aspects of magic can be used in both white or dark magic and many disciples keep following and teaching the inheritance of the sages to the younger generations. The Sages of Twilight are considered as historical figures and are known by every Twilis since their childhood.
-------
Hamara – Sage of Arcana (ancient magic and secrets): Chief of the Sages of Twilight, she’s the guardian of the most ancient and mysterious kinds of magic. In their researches to reach the Light Realm again, she was able to find a way back to the other dimension without using the Mirror of Twilight, but she kept it a secret. Legends say that she decided to hide her discovery in order to preserve the Realm of Light from the Seventh Sage (Lykofos) and his dark designs.
Imirt – Sage of Divination (visions and prophecies): Imirt watches over the enigmatic and ineluctable threads of destiny. She was known to appear at the most critical moments of the Twili kind in order to guide her people and to bring them advices under the shape of visions or prophecies. Imirt is blind but is always followed by her trustworthy owl who acts as her eyes and servant.
Senja – Sage of Sigils (talismans and pantacles): Don’t be fooled by her appearance, she’s not a kid but a very old lady in age. Senja is quite smart and controls the powers of sigils perfectly. She can create and use any kind of seal, rune, and so on. She even used many of them on her to keep her youth: so much things to discover, you don’t want to die before having it seen all!
Rokkur – Sage of Ritual (rites and blessings): Rokkur has always been considered as a weird and lunatic man who could hear voices and see things no one else could. However, he’s not a bad guy and he’s the most sensitive to magic among the Sages. No need for tricks, just feel the energy flow through your body and let it go. His teachings are those of humbleness and simplicity.
Krepusko – Sage of Astronomy (cosmic and elements): Krepusko is the wisest and eldest of the Sages. He knows everything about how the stars and elements can influence people, magic and the different outcomes they create. He rarely leaves his observatory, surrounded by tons of books, parchments and artefacts, but if you need any kind of knowledge, you shall come to see him.
Roavayi – Sage of Evocation (summoning and conjuration): This one Sage was known to live in the wild, among spirits and magical creatures. His experience taught him about taming and using the magic of evocation: totem animals, demons… he could summon or send away any kind of magical being. Only those with the greatest will and spirit are able to follow his path.
Lykofos – Sage of Alchemy (creation and transformation): Lykofos has been mostly erased from the legends even though his teachings about Alchemy are still followed by many. His amazing talent was recognized by everyone and nothing could resist his patient and analytic mind. However, his thirst for knowledge and dangerous experiments brought him to the darkest paths. In the end, he tried to take over the other Sages and wished to get the Triforce for the Interlopers too… He disappeared after one memorable battle against his fellows, but it is unsure what became of him aftermath.
-------
A bit of history: Long ago, before that the events of the Twilight Princess take place, the Twilight Realm was ruled by a council of the strongest Interlopers of the dimension, exactly 6 of them like counterparts of the Ancient Sages in the Realm of Light. These exceptional beings were so powerful and had gathered so much knowledge that they were considered and worshipped like deities. The Golden Goddesses having banned their kind to this dark dimension and forsaken the world of the Twili, only the Council was left to keep the faith of people and thanks to it they increased their own powers. Even though the Interlopers had brought the judgement of the Golden Goddesses upon themselves by their actions, they still needed to keep a fragile order in their tribe and to learn about their new world. For a few centuries, everything was chaotic till that these “deities” manage to pacify their kind and started to build the Twilight Realm as we know it. Their task being over, the Council decided to give its authority to one single ruler, a king or queen of Twilight that would take care of the people as their rightful monarch, generation after generation. After this, the Sages of Twilight fully merged with the Twilight dimension and embraced a kind of transcendence, totally disappearing from the scene but keeping an eye on their people from afar. Time passed… till that new troubles come to disturb the balance of their world and “awaken” the Sages of Twilight for worse or for better.

There hasn't been a good track record for remakes of foreign horror films (I’m looking at you Let Me In and Quarantine...), but  Erlingur Thoroddsen - the original’s director/writer - will be doing the screenplay. And it’s nice to see a LGBTQ horror film do well...
