Mini Event - Day 1 - Marius de RomanusA frenetic day in ancient Rome

Rome was kissed by a bright sun that morning, the September air brought with it a fresh breeze that smelled of freshly baked bread and pomegranate plants. Marius loved pomegranates, not only their smell and taste, but their color. Ever since he was a much younger child than now, he had admired the bright, radiant color of those fruits in the garden of the family mansion. That fruit had bewitched him, its luster and the vivid, powerful red of its skin, bringing him back to one of the earliest days when he remembered his father. That day, he was just a small child, he could not remember exactly why he was crying at that moment, whether because of a skinned knee or a broken toy, but he clearly remembered that tall, mighty man who was his father, kneeling beside him with a smile.

In his hands was a bright red fruit, a pomegranate. Marius still remembered how his father had taken him by the hand and sat down taking him in his arms. His father had opened the fruit, and to Marius's surprise he had seen that it was red inside as well, his wonderment provoking his father's boisterous laughter as he began to separate the kernels from the peel and give them to Marius. After that day Marius had always loved the color red, it was connected to what his father was, his childhood and Rome. Even now sitting on the hard marble near where the senate met, waiting patiently for his father to do his duty, as he covered his eyes from the sun with one hand he inhaled greedily that scent so familiar and pleasant.

Roses were for him a reminder of his sisters and his adoptive mother, Flaviana, while pomegranates were related to his father. He was thirteen years old now and always waited with joy and impatience for the first fruit from the pomegranate tree in his family's garden. That morning, passing by, he had seen that the tree had one ready to be picked. With excitement Marius had run, looking for his father. Since that distant day in his childhood, they had, then, always shared that first fruit from the tree. So when Marius saw his father, Livius, approaching, he jumped up and ran to him. Livius immediately noticed Marius' enthusiasm, and it did not take his father, who knew his son well, long to understand that joy.

Together they walked home, side by side, Livius regretting on the one hand his having lost the chance to lead his son by the hand, but on the other he was proud of how he had learned to walk tall, devoted and proud, intelligent and sensitive, despite the looks or words that sometimes scratched what in a father's eyes was and would always be his son's back. That afternoon passed under a blue sky hounded by graceful white clouds, with a father and a son, who in their words, and in their smiles, shared a pomegranate, loving that ravenous time that could bestow those moments. All that Marius was left with were the memories, and the smiles as well as the tears, and that red color that had always been his father to him.
