Animal Books For / Dierenboeken Voor Jaap Zeno Anna Julian Luca by Lous Martens Lous Martens has five grandchildren – Jaap, Zeno, Anna, Julian, and Luca – and has begun making an animal scrapbook for each newcomer to the family. Although it is seventeen years since the first, Jaap, was born, none of the five books are finished yet. Consisting of loosely pasted pictures of animals that were clipped from newspapers and magazines about art, literature, and science, plus stamps and photographs from advertising brochures, the books are enjoyable for their small, ever-evolving changes as new material is added. Parallel Encyclopedia #2 by Batia Suter Batia Suter's work intuitively situates found images in new contexts to provoke surprising reactions and significative possibilities. This volume follows on from the first Parallel Encyclopedia, published in 2007. Underlying themes of Suter's practice are the "iconification" and "immunogenicity" of old images, and the circumstances by which they become charged with new associative values. An Attempt at a Personal Epistemology⁣ Available at www.draw-down.com⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This book is the result of Luxembourg artist Jeff Weber’s long-term project from 2014 to 2017—an art space called Kunsthalle Leipzig which worked as an extension of his #photographic practice and functioned as a conceptual framework which allowed him to invite others to actively participate/collaborate. Weber's #sequence of images documents the renovation of the #Leipzig apartment and reflect the desire for a place created with a minimum of means yet invested with freedom. Light seems to become a physical object in Weber’s pictures: “yet the quality of grey tones… is mysterious,” writes American filmmaker Robert Beavers. Foucault In: Olaf Nicolai / Available at www.draw-down.com / In 1975, Michel Foucault was invited to the University of California, Berkeley. During his visit, Simeon Wade—who assisted and accompanied #Foucault —persuaded him to join him and his partner, Michael Stoneman, on a trip to Death Valley and Zabriskie Point, where Foucault took LSD for the first time. Wade wrote about this experience in an unpublished manuscript, “Foucault in California.” When German conceptual artist Olaf Nicolai asked to use excerpts from the text for an artist’s publication, he was permitted a maximum of 250 words. Nicolai selected 205 words from throughout the manuscript. Although the broader content can only be guessed at, the published abbreviated text is itself a trip.
