A super-duper clearer version of RonToto on a date. Please link bank when using the images. TYSM.
Excerpts from the Spoon.2Di interview of Youhei Azakami (Ron Kamonohashi) and Junya Enoki (Totomaru Isshiki)
On RonToto’s bourgeoning relationship after the Episode 6, the Case of the Live Broadcast Murder
Youhei/Yōhei Azakami: We were in a situation where Toto might have died, and I imagined that I was desperate, and I thought it was the first time that Ron showed human emotions, so I was also impressed. I think it was an episode where you can feel that Ron's feelings for Toto have changed a lot compared to the first episode.
Ron being the culprit again from the three-parter The Murder at the Observatory on a Solitary Island arc:
Azakami: Ron was suspected of being the culprit of a certain incident five years ago, and it's an event that I don't want my character Ron to remember, but even though he is suspected of being the culprit in this case, he is not as depressed as before. It is when he realised that “Toto was not there five years ago.” I still felt that a trusting relationship was being built between the two, and it left an impression on me. It's rare for Ron to put such a thing into words honestly.
EnoJun on Toto’s first impression of Ron and his portrayal of the police detective.
Junya Enoki: Ron is a weirdo who does crazy things, but he has a child-like aspect. I feel like I have an adult side. I really like deduction and it's fun, but I also have a good sense as a proper adult to fight because I hunt down the criminal. … I thought it was very interesting to do it. When I read the original work for the first time, there were a lot of tsukkomi. I got the impression that he is a character who leads comedy, Toto doesn't have much ability as a detective, but he has a great sense of justice, and he doesn't want to hurt the criminal after Ron has solved the case (who pressures them to kill themselves). I felt attracted to his tsukkomi personality.
Akazami on the difference between their characters:
Akazami: Toto is a character that is easy for the audience to empathize with, but the more I read it, the more I felt that the intensity of Ron's personality would stand out… I'm playing it while thinking that I won't make the character darker, on the other hand, Toto is full of feelings.

I don’t want to go there, but I can’t help it. Apologies. That black coat Ron Kamonohashi is wearing on episode 3 feels like Akira Amano’s homage to Cumberbatch’s coat on “Sherlock BBC.” Even the way Ron turns up his collar. What’s missing is the red buttonhole.
Of course, it might be all coincidence. He’s just used to wearing formal clothes when leaving the house as he got used to it when he was at the academy.
It didn’t take long in the manga as Akira designates street-smart clothing that man of his age does wear.

Shield Rebrand
Tumblr media
With Annecy right around the corner, and with a new leader at the helm... Warner Animation Grou- Sorry, **Warner Bros. Pictures Animation**... Has announced a morsel of their big rebrand following nearly a decade of having "Warner Animation Group" as their prime feature animation moniker...
Recap: Former DreamWorks powerhosue exec Bill Damaschke, who was a key figure at the studio from the late 1990s all the way up until the mid-2010s... Ya know, the era of MADAGASCAR, OVER THE HEDGE, KUNG FU PANDA, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, THE CROODS, etc.... now runs Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Or to save digital ink on this somewhat mouthful name, WBPA...
Their previously-released picture was DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS this past summer, a pretty commercially successful comics-based romp that's sure to get some kind of continuation. We would've had *another* WAG/WBPA movie this past year, too, with SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT. Conceived as a straight to Max (formerly HBO Max) prequel, that movie was completed and scored... But Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav - in one of many bad moves - cast it into the black hole, a "tax write-off" that can never be released and no one can legally make any money off of it...
This year, at one point, would've had the hybrid Looney Tunes movie COYOTE VS. ACME, and next year once had a WIZARD OF OZ retelling called TOTO.
Curiously, the new report on Deadline says that COYOTE VS. ACME is still in the works, as the live-action portions were all filmed a while ago. (Not that that means anything, keep in mind that Zaslav took a nearly-completed BATGIRL that was entirely filmed... And also threw that into a black hole, I think all traces of its existence have been deleted.) If finished and released, as it's still without a concrete release date, then COYOTE VS. ACME could possibly be the first WAG movie to be billed as a WBPA movie. The rebrand could be effective immediately, maybe not... If it is, then WAG's last picture would be a dog movie. Quite something.
Speaking of dogs... TOTO wasn't mentioned at all, strongly implying that that film is no longer happening.
And speaking of pet animals... THE CAT AND THE HAT, which was always slated after TOTO, is still coming. It's now aiming for either 2025 or 2026, and has added Alessandro Carloni (KUNG FU PANDA 3) as director alongside Erica Rivinoja. Presumably, the planned THING ONE AND THING TWO and OH THE PLACE YOU'LL GO! movies are still on, as Warner did enter an overall deal back in 2018 to make plenty of Dr. Seuss animated movies. Other than that, no word on the Ron Clements-John Musker picture METAL MEN, of course a DC adaptation... What ever happened to that one? I was pumped to see that Disney dream team make their big return, because it's been a while. MOANA was their previous picture, and presumably final one for Disney Animation...
Damaschke, channeling his DreamWorks days, plans to have WBPA be much more filmmaker-driven and less focused on big IPs the way WAG was for a little while. Relying on Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Hanna-Barbera, DC, et al. All stuff WBD owns, and abandoning pictures like THE ICE DRAGON and BONE... Which, yes, are based on pre-existing source material, but you know what I mean. Not the stuff WB has had in their family free for years and years. I missed it when WAG/WBPA made movies like STORKS and SMALLFOOTS to go with all the LEGO movies and such.
He noted the studio's history of releasing films like THE IRON GIANT, CORPSE BRIDE, and HAPPY FEET. He did erroneously state that THE IRON GIANT was "commercially successful". On video, yes, but we all know that movie - Brad Bird's feature directorial debut - was sadly a crushing bomb at the box office upon its original 1999 release. Still, that he gave that film and some others a nod is important... But, as the Deadline report pointed out... That's a line-up alright! Films directed by Brad Bird, Tim Burton, George Miller. He also added Robert Zemeckis' mo-capped THE POLAR EXPRESS, but surprisingly left out Zack Snyder's GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE'S adaptation. (Why they went with that generic mouthful title is beyond me.)
Warner's partnership with Locksmith Animation, the UK-based animation studio founded by ex-Aardman women Julie Lockhart and Sarah Smith, is also still on. Much to my surprise. I thought that affair was over, but no! They're still in the mix, and have two pictures in the works that'll debut after their THAT CHRISTMAS debuts on Netflix. Those are the sci-fi Grimm fairy tale story THE LUNAR CHRONICLES, and a modern musical called BAD FAIRIES. They've got great talent attached (for example, CENTAURWORLD director Megan Nicole Dong is helming BAD FAIRIES), and they both sound like fun... And I wanted to see more of Locksmith anyways, they made a neat little start with the charming RON'S GONE WRONG. Always nice to see a relatively new studio make it.
Still, this initial announcement was much more focused on... IPs. Locksmith is also said to have a hand in the IP movies in addition to the original productions...
In the works is a Flintstones origin movie called MEET THE FLINTSTONES, to be written by MARIO's Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who previously did lots of work on Warners' own TEEN TITANS GO! Presumably, this won't be starting any Hanna-Barbera "Cinematic Universe" that SCOOB! attempted to do. The whole world of Hanna-Barbera was already a shared universe anyways, for they've had many crossovers over the decades: FLINTSTONES MEET THE JETSONS, for starters. JOHNNY BRAVO had that whole Scooby-Doo episode which threw then-6 year old me for a curveball. The loose nature of many of their most-beloved cartoons allows for that. Yogi Bear can just suddenly show up in, like, a Scooby-Doo cartoon or something. It doesn't have to be this MCU-esque thing, and oddly enough, the much-maligned SCOOB! kinda knew that. The 2020 movie wasn't necessarily setting up future movies or tying everything down to some S.H.I.E.L.D.-esque connective tissue... The characters from other Hanna-Barbera shows simply existed in the same universe as the Scooby-Doo characters. They were simply going to solve more mysteries as the Mystery Gang after the plot wrapped up. I loved the idea of them having to face Dick Dastardly, and also meeting faces like Captain Caveman... The execution, I felt, just didn't service the world that they shaped. To me, SCOOB! played out much more like a generic animated movie that just happened to be set in the H-B universe. I felt it could've been a lot better. I'm not sure if the scrapped version that was aiming for a 2018 release, the one that involved Dax Shepard, was going to be any better. That too could've been a cluttered cameo cacophony. First and foremost, I'd like to see this Flintstones movie just be a really cool adaptation of the titular family. Maybe, in a sort of post-SPIDER-VERSE sense, they use a really cool style of CGI that really brings Bedrock to life in a way not seen in the previous live-action movie iterations. SCOOB!, to be fair, had a really fun-looking style that meshed the classic designs and cartooniness of the source material with 3D quite nicely. But, one movie at a time please. Maybe it should just be, simply, a Flintstones movie.
Another live-action/animation hybrid Looney Tunes movie is in the works, too, apparently... Although part of me just wishes to see... Simply... An all-animated Looney Tunes movie. It doesn't even need to be an ensemble movie, since many of the original Looney Tunes theatrical shorts (in addition to the Merrie Melodies) weren't ensemble cartoons... But for whatever reason, Warner just won't do it. SPACE JAM really did set the template going forward... I can't complain too much. What's going on with the Warner Bros. Animation-produced Looney Tunes movies like THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP? They seem to still be alive in some way or another.
I also don't rule out, now that ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is out and surpassing its predecessor at the box office in a matter of days, hours even- An animated Batman theatrical feature. Or something set in the DC Universe that isn't LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS. There are already some animation plans underway for James Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DC Universe, so... We shall see...
Obviously, I'm much more interested in the non-IP stuff they plan on putting into development... So, I'm assuming during Annecy next week, they'll shed some more light on that... I'm just glad to hear that WBPA is in good standing and they have a new game plan going forward...

Parallelism: On why RonToto is so real
On episode 4, before Amamiya fainted over the beauty of Ron Kamonohashi, she got a closer look in his eyes as the latter glanced at her doing his “yes, I solved who the culprit is” fwish-fwish gesture. His icy blue eyes shining, very exposed. She fell in love. (“So steaming hot!”)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the first episode, Ron had a closer look at Toto. He was enamoured. How could be that this naïve police officer was determined to bring him back to detective business?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toto, on the other hand, although he admires and respects his boss Amamiya, there is no desire involved.
This trope is called Eating the Eye Candy.
There's just something completely gorgeous about that other character. The character just can't help but stare and drool over their gleaming smile, sapphire eyes, or any other attractive features.
Akira Amano decided early on where the story is going. Series composition writer Wataru Watari is interpreting her vision. It is safe to say that the manga has never included nor focused on Amamiya’s eye. Meaning, the anime writers wanted to emphasise the significance of this trope to the possible pairings. We can rest assured who the OTP is in this series.

But this is fascinating. This includes the “lifesize” posters.
Ron-190 cm x 60 cm
Toto-180 cm x 60 cm
I refuse to believe that Toto Isshiki is 176 to 180 cm tall.

Curious add-ons and why RonToto is sailing, Episode 7 (Part 4)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can’t decide the meaning of these additional scenes. I have two options. Either Ron asks Toto if he’d like to have a taste of his food covered in sugarcane syrup. And Toto smiles softly, shakes his head declining Ron’s offer. Or, Toto is shaking his head by way of scolding Ron because of his extra wishes being fulfilled. It must be both. Or, it’d be like this:
Ron: Oh well, this is me. What can I do? (That head turn thing)
Toto: Tsk, tsk, tsk…
This precedes Toto’s thoughts that he doesn’t know much about Ron’s past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toto rushing to Ron’s side at the dome crying out his name upon seeing the dead Onodera the photographer and is immediately relieved by releasing a loud sigh, grateful that Ron is alive upon hearing his friend’s soft breathing.
Tumblr media
It is interesting that the anime version is limiting Ron’s asshole tendencies by being softer and kinder to Toto. In the anime, he’s really convinced that Toto will one day become a very capable detective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Must be the English translator or the anime writers’ choice to change some wordings that immediately transform these manga panels an altogether new experience for me to view Ron and Toto’s relationship in a manner that is soft built in trust and dependency.
Tumblr media
Apologies, I really love these scenes.

Curious add-ons, Episode 10 (Part 6), The Blush and other things
Like what I’ve mentioned before, Wataru Watari and co. edited out Akira’s dialogue and panels in the manga and added a few things that ante up RonToto’s relationship.
(If you listen to the RKDD voice actors, Youhei Azakami especially, they say RonToto when referring to their—his and EnokiJun’s— characters often during their radio show out of laziness, heh, and habit maybe.)
Tumblr media
The blush after Ron notices that Toto is looking at him. Probably caught by his bashfulness, in the end, he smiles at Toto, but realises that there’s something off after Toto sighs loudly.
Tumblr media
Honestly, this is so sweet. The anime writers are invested making use of Akira’s panels where Ron loves to smirk so we can hear him say “heh” with the movement of his lips and giving emphasis on the quiet moments where the characters can interact without words but still heavily imply that emotions are surging. I particularly like the scenes between Toto and John Grizzly where the BLUE instructor was interrogating Toto’s relationship with Ron. That was a minute of no dialogue only the reaction of their faces shown.
Tumblr media
“So, that’s how much… she likes you” is replaced with this nicer statement from Ron. Anyone who treats his friend Toto nicely gets a star from him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the following scenes Toto has come out more dominant than in the manga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yesterday new merchandise had been unveiled just in time for the upcoming Jump Festa. Two of them are these images of the two. Ron is wearing a trendy attire with harnesses on his chest area and a dog tag. Whereas Toto is wearing a sort of street-smart urban outfit. The joke on X Twitter is who’s the “dog” and who is the owner.
Tumblr media
Yes. It is all coincidence. And I am probably projecting.
They definitely removed Ron’s “I feel the same way” line and instead included the dialogue suggesting two things. 1)Ron sees that Toto is fond of ordering takeouts that it is implied that he cooks for the police officer from time to time. His recipes are mostly drenched with black syrup. 2) because Toto is not into cooking, he wishes that one day he does break this habit. Maybe because it is not healthy. This is where my head canon and speculation collide. Seeing that cooking is chemistry and Ron has been a hikikomori for five years and had lots of time during those times he probably had so many things tried and experimented.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From an outsider’s point of view, like Chikori, who has been wondering what the hell is the relationship between these two.

Am sensing a pattern on the way Totomaru Isshiki gets defensive (breaks out in sweat) when someone notices his special relationship with Ron Kamonohashi.
Tumblr media
Toto protests too much. Then look at Ron’s face. He seems sad that Toto feels that way. He doesn’t say anything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ron has gone from just smiling it off to looking unhappy.

Manga, Chapter 3, vs Anime, Episode 3
In the Victorian era, seeing that RonToto don’t have girlfriends they are “confirmed bachelors,” a euphemism for homosexual men.
Oh well…
Reminds me of one scene from Sherlock BBC.
John Watson: “’Bachelor John Watson?’ ‘Bachelor?’ What the hell are they implying? ‘Frequently seen in the company of bachelor John Watson …’ ‘… confirmed bachelor John Watson’! Okay, this is too much. We need to be more careful.”

In defense of Totomaru Isshiki and the pitfalls of a John Watson-esque character
I am kinda frustrated with the way the fandom treats Toto Isshiki. This reminds me of the way the Sherlock Holmes fandom disregard Dr. John Watson. I’ve read some negative comments on Crunchyroll and see the lack of enthusiasm on Tumblr when it comes to Toto-centered gifs. Not a gripe, just an observation.
I can’t help it. I am a Watsonian by heart and will defend any JW-esque characters with the likes of Toto Isshiki, for example.
It is the same pitfall that befalls any adaptation or iteration that portrays SH and JW lookalikes.
People disregard the significance of a JW-esque character and elevate the SH ones, which of course understandable on the surface. The SH ones are flashy, eccentric, distant, aloof, but a genius. The JW ones are ordinary, insignificant. He’s one of us.
The adaptations I know that respect JW are the Granada Holmes, Elementary (in some aspects) and the early Sherlock BBC. And maybe, the mouse version.
Although, Ron’s attitude is miles away from the many adaptations of SH, he treats Toto as an equal as the latter has seen him at his lowest and the only one who succeeded in encouraging him to make a comeback, takes consider of the way Toto gauges people, in short Toto is his moral compass, knows that he’s in good hands with Toto around him, even in a dangerous situation. Ron also appreciates Toto’s empathy and feels humbled every time Toto admires his talent in deduction, which certainly feeds his ego. Most of all, in the manga, the two might have accumulated other friends, but they know that there are only the two of them together.
Lastly, culled from this thesis:
It is Watson’s regular function to register bafflement in the face of mystery and to express wonder as Holmes solves it. Perhaps it should be emphasized, however, that though Watson is a foil he is not a burlesque character, as the radio and motion picture dramatizations have portrayed him. His bewilderment is intended not so much to reveal him as the butt as to add luster to Holmes and his deductions. If Watson does play Sancho to Holmes’s Quixote, the joke, when there is one, is as likely to be directed toward the eccentric knight of the nineteenth century rationalism as made at the expense of his faithful squire. We may patronize him somewhat, but we also take our cue from him on how to react.
That’s also Totomaru Isshiki in a nutshell.
