A super-duper clearer version of RonToto on a date. Please link bank when using the images. TYSM.
Excerpts from the Spoon.2Di interview of Youhei Azakami (Ron Kamonohashi) and Junya Enoki (Totomaru Isshiki)
On RonToto’s bourgeoning relationship after the Episode 6, the Case of the Live Broadcast Murder
Youhei/Yōhei Azakami: We were in a situation where Toto might have died, and I imagined that I was desperate, and I thought it was the first time that Ron showed human emotions, so I was also impressed. I think it was an episode where you can feel that Ron's feelings for Toto have changed a lot compared to the first episode.
Ron being the culprit again from the three-parter The Murder at the Observatory on a Solitary Island arc:
Azakami: Ron was suspected of being the culprit of a certain incident five years ago, and it's an event that I don't want my character Ron to remember, but even though he is suspected of being the culprit in this case, he is not as depressed as before. It is when he realised that “Toto was not there five years ago.” I still felt that a trusting relationship was being built between the two, and it left an impression on me. It's rare for Ron to put such a thing into words honestly.
EnoJun on Toto’s first impression of Ron and his portrayal of the police detective.
Junya Enoki: Ron is a weirdo who does crazy things, but he has a child-like aspect. I feel like I have an adult side. I really like deduction and it's fun, but I also have a good sense as a proper adult to fight because I hunt down the criminal. … I thought it was very interesting to do it. When I read the original work for the first time, there were a lot of tsukkomi. I got the impression that he is a character who leads comedy, Toto doesn't have much ability as a detective, but he has a great sense of justice, and he doesn't want to hurt the criminal after Ron has solved the case (who pressures them to kill themselves). I felt attracted to his tsukkomi personality.
Akazami on the difference between their characters:
Akazami: Toto is a character that is easy for the audience to empathize with, but the more I read it, the more I felt that the intensity of Ron's personality would stand out… I'm playing it while thinking that I won't make the character darker, on the other hand, Toto is full of feelings.

I can’t believe I took so long to watch episode 6 when it contains one of my most favorite RonToto moments ever
Also, can we just appreciate this slight line change in the anime:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know if it’s just the translation, but the shift from “the person I’m solving a case with” to simply “you,” addressing Toto directly, feels so much more personal and really highlights how important Toto is to Ron
And god, the voice acting for Ron is sooo good. You can really hear his voice trembling. The man was so damned terrified

In one of your Q&A anon ver you mentioned that you have catched up with Ron Kamonohashi newest chapters in the manga. Is there any moments in the manga that you really cherish/like? Not necessarily RonToto moments, but just anything in particular.
Oh...there are a lot of moments that I like. But I think my favorite moments are when Toto is trying to cheer Ron up or remind him that he's a really good detective and that he's a good person and he's not someone who'd hurt an innocent person. Idk, just Toto reminding Ron that he's not what everyone says he is, which is a cold blooded murderer.
I also like the relationships in the manga. The relationships are real and genuine and they're quite funny. I like those moments a lot.

Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective Episode 6 Review - Do Psychic Powers Exist?
I want you to take a closer look at the opening, mainly at the parts after the two sisters from the piggy bank case. You see Kawasemi and Yamane walking past Toto while Toto walks past the husband and wife from the hot springs case? Yeah, they were blurry before; same goes for Michiyo who shows up after that shot as she walks past Ron. I like that little detail of the minor characters showing up as well as someone as important as Kawasemi. It shows that even if these characters are mainly episodic ones, they still play a lot of significance in Ron and Toto’s sleuthing adventures.
Tumblr media
Back on to the review, today’s episode mainly introduces a new character. Dr. Mofu Usaki is a renowned neurosurgeon who’s very accident-prone and clumsy when she’s not doing surgery. I do like that while she is pretty much a dojikko (otaku lingo for ‘cute clumsy girl’), she’s actually pretty competent with what she does. She was on a supernatural program to disprove the existence of psychic powers; she made solid theories on Torage’s credibility and she even performed CPR on the victim and could tell what sort of poison was flowing through his body. I love how she was written not as a cute girl who needs help, but as a cute competent girl who helped out in solving the abrupt murder case. However, the biggest mystery about Dr. Mofu is how she’s still alive. I guess her clumsiness gives her good luck, which reminds me of Colette from Tales of Symphonia who also had similar clumsiness.
The case was a rather quirky one. It stems from whether or not psychic powers were the cause of it. I think the most interesting aspect of the case is that Ron and Toto have to prove that Torage isn’t a psychic and that he murdered the victim with his own hands. The fact that the duo have to prove that Torage is a quack is the key element to this case; the man already admitted he killed him, but the point is proving his method. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting part where the word DEATH upside down became SLEEP. It feels a bit contrived, but hey, as long as they solved it, I’m okay with it. The murder weapon is actually a needle that’s in a marker.
After two episodes, Ron’s weird culprit killing eyes activate again. This time, Toto legit risks his life to stop the situation and he succeeds. However, the fact that the marker he was holding was a normal marker made me sigh with relief. Seeing Ron so shaken up that he almost got Toto killed showed how much those eyes do bother him and why he took a five year break from sleuthing after his expulsion. Not much is known about Ron right now, but I’m sure that he just doesn’t want to be the cause of murders that he has no memories of once again; the fear of him regaining consciousness and seeing Toto dead is understandable. I’m glad that Ron is showing that he does care a lot for Toto. I seriously love that Toto’s kind and confident words were the reason Ron got out of his funk. Toto may be mistreated a lot, but you cannot deny he has a very good heart; that’s why Ron likes him so much.
Other than the case and the RonToto moments, I love the comedic aspects of the episode. From Ron finally getting a TV and spending his nights watching shows to the point that his eyes became red to Ron posing as a Torage fan was hilarious. I love how he does his signature hair flip, but the difference was that he did it and it revealed that his eyes are still red. I love that the signature scene does have its variations and today’s episode showed a hilarious aspect of it. Bless Dr. Mofu for handing him eye drops.
Since Dr. Mofu is a neurosurgeon, I do wonder if she will be a key factor to help Ron control the eyes and to give a solid diagnosis on what the heck is going on with him at those moments. I hope she appears more in the future; she does seem to be an important character with how she’s prominent in the ending. What are your thoughts to this case and episode?

Summary: “Honey! I’m home!” Ron’s cheerful yet smooth voice halted his thoughts and made Toto turned his attention to him, blinking owlishly at him.
“What?” He uttered intelligently as he gawked at the male was now sauntering towards him.
Or Ron and Toto were solving a case and they had to pretend to be a couple as the situation is needing it.
Characters: Ron Kamonohashi & Isshiki "Toto" Totomaru
(A/N: I don’t own anything from this franchise. Respective ownership belongs to Akira Amano for this great manga. Belated Happy New Year’s everyone).
Toto should’ve declined it the moment he had an opportunity to do so.
But nope.
Just one look at Ron’s megawatt smile and he was a goner for sure.
Soft hearted as he was, he didn’t have the guts to outright reject Ron’s questionable ideas and suggestions… most of the time unfortunately.
Regardless of the other’s eccentricities and whatnot, Toto cannot doubt Ron’s exemplary mind and logic when it came to solving cases.
His out of the box solutions always work.
But then again was this necessary?
Why were they here in the first place again?
Right.
There was a series of missing person cases that’s been increasing in Tokyo and this place was related to it…
…a speed dating restaurant.
Yep.
You got it right.
A restaurant which specializes in speed dating to find your match after conversing with some people for around 4-5 minutes.
And Ron’s fantastic idea was to pretend that they matched together and so on and so forth.
Toto wanted to bang his head against the wall.
“Are you really sure that this would work Ron?” He whispered once again in askance.
“Awww… Toto when has my ideas didn’t pan out?” Ron feigned a hurt expression on his face but the twinkle on his eyes told him a different story.
Toto wanted to facepalm but a defeated sigh left his lips. “Just don’t do anything weird that would blow our cover.”
“Of course!” Ron smiled cheerfully at him before they finally get inside the place and started their “act.”
Toto sighed for the umpteenth time as he flopped on the couch and stared at the ceiling.
He remembered Ron and him exchanging some observations and ideas at the other side of the restaurant when they were assigned as the daters for 5 minutes after going through a series of small yet boring conversations with the others before they get the chance to be assigned with each other.
Toto wasn’t jealous when his eyes were fixed for a moment on the guy who seemed touchy with Ron during that time.
Nope.
He was looking for the signs that the culprit might be present in there.
And not paying too much attention to Ron earlier who was smiling and paying attention to him like he was the only person that matters to him the most at the restaurant earlier.
No. Nada. Zilch.
He tried to convince himself of that.
And then Ron said to him to went back to his place before him as he would check something out.
So, there we go and here he was waiting for him.
“Honey! I’m home!” Ron’s cheerful yet smooth voice halted his thoughts and made Toto turned his attention to him, blinking owlishly at him.
“What?” He uttered intelligently as he gawked at the male who was now sauntering towards him.
“My acting skills got you good, didn’t I? I’m still not rusty after all!” Ron’s laughed lightly.
Toto inwardly breathed a sigh of relief but ignored the pang of disappointment that washed over him.
“Yep. At the very least you were able to manage to act your way earlier in there.” Toto remarked casually and if Ron gazed at him with that undecipherable expression on his face which made his own face felt hot and heart skipped a beat for moment, he chose to ignore it as there shouldn’t be any meaning to it right?
(A/N: Finally contributed my first one shot to this fandom as I’m now officially boarding on the Rontoto ship. Reviews are amusing so let me hear them from you).

Curious add-ons and why RonToto is sailing, Episode 7 (Part 4)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can’t decide the meaning of these additional scenes. I have two options. Either Ron asks Toto if he’d like to have a taste of his food covered in sugarcane syrup. And Toto smiles softly, shakes his head declining Ron’s offer. Or, Toto is shaking his head by way of scolding Ron because of his extra wishes being fulfilled. It must be both. Or, it’d be like this:
Ron: Oh well, this is me. What can I do? (That head turn thing)
Toto: Tsk, tsk, tsk…
This precedes Toto’s thoughts that he doesn’t know much about Ron’s past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toto rushing to Ron’s side at the dome crying out his name upon seeing the dead Onodera the photographer and is immediately relieved by releasing a loud sigh, grateful that Ron is alive upon hearing his friend’s soft breathing.
Tumblr media
It is interesting that the anime version is limiting Ron’s asshole tendencies by being softer and kinder to Toto. In the anime, he’s really convinced that Toto will one day become a very capable detective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Must be the English translator or the anime writers’ choice to change some wordings that immediately transform these manga panels an altogether new experience for me to view Ron and Toto’s relationship in a manner that is soft built in trust and dependency.
Tumblr media
Apologies, I really love these scenes.

Curious add-ons, Episode 10 (Part 6), The Blush and other things
Like what I’ve mentioned before, Wataru Watari and co. edited out Akira’s dialogue and panels in the manga and added a few things that ante up RonToto’s relationship.
(If you listen to the RKDD voice actors, Youhei Azakami especially, they say RonToto when referring to their—his and EnokiJun’s— characters often during their radio show out of laziness, heh, and habit maybe.)
Tumblr media
The blush after Ron notices that Toto is looking at him. Probably caught by his bashfulness, in the end, he smiles at Toto, but realises that there’s something off after Toto sighs loudly.
Tumblr media
Honestly, this is so sweet. The anime writers are invested making use of Akira’s panels where Ron loves to smirk so we can hear him say “heh” with the movement of his lips and giving emphasis on the quiet moments where the characters can interact without words but still heavily imply that emotions are surging. I particularly like the scenes between Toto and John Grizzly where the BLUE instructor was interrogating Toto’s relationship with Ron. That was a minute of no dialogue only the reaction of their faces shown.
Tumblr media
“So, that’s how much… she likes you” is replaced with this nicer statement from Ron. Anyone who treats his friend Toto nicely gets a star from him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the following scenes Toto has come out more dominant than in the manga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yesterday new merchandise had been unveiled just in time for the upcoming Jump Festa. Two of them are these images of the two. Ron is wearing a trendy attire with harnesses on his chest area and a dog tag. Whereas Toto is wearing a sort of street-smart urban outfit. The joke on X Twitter is who’s the “dog” and who is the owner.
Tumblr media
Yes. It is all coincidence. And I am probably projecting.
They definitely removed Ron’s “I feel the same way” line and instead included the dialogue suggesting two things. 1)Ron sees that Toto is fond of ordering takeouts that it is implied that he cooks for the police officer from time to time. His recipes are mostly drenched with black syrup. 2) because Toto is not into cooking, he wishes that one day he does break this habit. Maybe because it is not healthy. This is where my head canon and speculation collide. Seeing that cooking is chemistry and Ron has been a hikikomori for five years and had lots of time during those times he probably had so many things tried and experimented.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From an outsider’s point of view, like Chikori, who has been wondering what the hell is the relationship between these two.

However, because Toto (Totomaru Isshiki) is there, Ron should not be dragged into the darkness!. How will RonToto, who deepened their bonds after many incidents, face the M family!?”

A much clearer RonToto on a date!
The special feature of ``Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Mystery'' includes a newly drawn pinup of Ron and Toto taking a breather at a cafe ☕ !
Furthermore, in a conversation with Youhei Azakami, who plays Ron, and Junya Enoki, who plays Toto, we looked back at the stories from episodes 1 to 9 and asked about how they spent time at the cafe 🧩 ( x )
Head canon: it was Spitz Feier who took this picture taking account of Toto’s heart eyes.

Edit: My copy just arrived. The clearest copy of RonToto on a date.

So, so glad to hear this. The way Youhei Azakami delivers this statement melts your heart. It feels like hearing him breathe and is relieved. Also, Wataru and co. changed it a bit.

Curious add-ons: additions and deletions, Episode 11 (Part 7)
A bit of a warning: photo-heavy post
Eleven episodes in, and it is safe to say that I love these versions of Ron and Toto. Don’t get me wrong Akira Amano hasn’t done anything wrong, it is just these RonToto are kinder and more codependent from each other that I am 110 per cent sure they’d compete with that kind of codependency from the manga RonToto, and anime RonToto would win.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They diminished Toto’s comedic childlike expressions on this episode removing the giggle on Toto’s part, for example, when he asked Ron if the latter had a friend. Junya Enoki, for his part, admitted that because Toto is a grown man and a police officer, he doesn’t need to act cute all the time. The reason this scene is much more tender than in the manga. The “what’s so funny?” question from Ron was omitted and instead the anime writers made Toto stammer with his “N-not even… one?” After hearing Ron’s answer that he considers Toto to be his friend, he replies with a much more humbled “I am glad to hear it” and not “Gee, thanks.” And then the blush on Toto’s face as if he is darn proud and happy because after all they have been through, Ron treats him more special than the others, that is being allowed to be closer to him by becoming his friend.
Tumblr media
Truth be told, these instances of blushing from the main characters would turn me into mush.
Another passage omitted from the manga and the new dialogue has become a Sherlock BBC reference in the anime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kawasemi san: “If you want to hide a tree, hide it in a forest.” (Episode 11)
Tumblr media
SH from Sherlock BBC: “If you wanted to hide a tree then the best place to do it is a forest, wouldn’t you say? People would just walk past it, not knowing - not able to decipher the message.” (Episode 2, Season 1, The Blind Banker)
Surely, one of these days I’d write a list of all these Sherlock BBC references: from the manga to anime, because they are so many. Of course, it could have been the translator’s choice in the end.
Continuity problems in the manga are explained in the anime.
Tumblr media
a) the reason Ron eats dangos 🍡 on the train;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
b) Constable Kimyou, whose surname doesn’t mean “strange”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
c) Ron accompanying Toto was not a chance where he got an email from the neurology institute, but it was a planned or let’s just say a convenient way to ride with Toto on the train at the same time going to Aichi with a purpose.
Tumblr media
The anime crew adding this scene. Toto’s joyful reaction upon seeing his friend again after witnessing Kawasemi’s slump in person. Probably Toto was relieved and had missed his friend so much after their abrupt and odd parting at the Nagoya train station, in which he had so many questions that were partly answered at the end of the episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can you see the puppets and the No. 96 (Ron’s scar which has become part of him) from the shop? Not only they increased the price from ¥900 (in 2021) to ¥960 (2023) but Ron’s puppets Kamo-kyun (platypus) and Eli Pyon (frill-necked lizard) are on sale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This ending that fuels a few questions. Ron was sort of refusing to look at Toto as he explained his meeting with Dr. Mofu and her subsequent referrals to the other medical professionals concerning his pathological condition to pressure the criminals to suicide. Instead he looked at his reflection on the glass train window, Toto’s delightful enthusiastic voice had become white noise. This Ron is more pessimistic and not so much looking forward to the therapy and its possible outcome. I wonder if the anime writers (Jackson Ou wrote the episode with a storyboard from Shingo Tamaki who were also responsible to previous Kawasemi episode) would deviate a bit from the manga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two more episodes and I don’t want it to end. There are so many materials available and it seems we haven’t scratched the surface yet. The tension is getting bigger. It would be nicer if they are given the second cour and end the first season with the Plateau Aubege arc. A perfect ending to establish a canon RonToto.

Another day, another discovery.
Tumblr media
The blurry couple on the left will become Unno-san and Donzawa from the Observatory on Solitary Island arc.
Tumblr media
The two men on the right will become Torage and his victim.
Tumblr media
The femicide victim and her husband are already un-blurred while Kawasemi-san and Yamane still await their turn.
Tumblr media
The young woman sitting on the bench’s arm support will become Onodera the photographer and John Grizzly behind her.
Culled from Episode 2, the Case of the Piggy Bank Murder
Much has been said ( @ecargmura ) on the opening song’s blurring of the people around Ron and Toto that has become clearer once these supporting characters have appeared from the episodes.
@plant-akki posted several gifs of these comparisons from episode 3 to the latest.
But have you noticed the man who’s running with the billowing black coat? Once he is seen running in the other direction, but most of the time Ron and Toto are chasing after him.
Tumblr media
During Episode 8, the man on the left becomes Jumonji, the director of the observatory. But take a look at the man wearing a black coat running behind him.
Tumblr media
He’s now in front of Toto. It looks like the duo is running after him.
Tumblr media
He’s appeared now behind them of what looks like a rendition of the “Murder on the Orient Express.”
Tumblr media
In the end, he’s pointed the crime scene to them from what looks like a scene from a Japanese detective TV series or mystery film.
The trench-coat wearing Ron is a direct reference to “Columbo.”
Take note that it is only Ron who wears different kinds of clothing, depends on the media he’s dreaming in, while Toto still wears his grey suit.
Anyway, it is none other this guy.
Tumblr media
This guy here, Sherlock Holmes, and the man next to him, his John Watson, are fond of running after their suspects in this BBC series. This image is iconic.
Tumblr media
It must be an homage, or a running gag (no pun intended), that Ron and Toto should do the same as Ron gets to live his dream of becoming a full-fledged detective like his ancestor with the help of Toto. Hence, Toto holding his friend’s hand who must be telling him, “Hey, slow down, I got you, you are all right. I’ll be here beside you. You aren’t alone now.”

Episode 8, Murder at the Isolated Island Observatory (Part 2), a synopsis
Ron has become a suspect in a murder case, and Toto desperately investigates to clear the suspicion. Grizzly also proceeded with the investigation, but all the people involved except Ron had an alibi, so they thought the culprit was Ron. However, after hearing the situation at the time of the crime that Toto investigated, Grizzly is convinced that there are other real culprits ...
