Plant of the Day
Saturday 24 August 2024
While showing some horticultural friends the gardens of Skaill House, Orkney, I noticed in one of the borders the first white flowered Chamaenerion angustifolium 'Album' (white rosebay willowherb, epilobium) I’ve seen on the islands. The tall stems of this herbaceous perennial carry slender spires of pure-white flowers and the plant thrives in moisture retentive soil with a sunny location. If you’ve ever wondered who produces ‘Plant of the Day’ here I am in action photographed by my friend Sandra.

and so my next super-fancy caterpillar is...
hmmm...
...not a caterpillar?
Turns out this is an abnormal growth condition in plants called fasciation. In which a normally cylindrical structure deforms into a crest-shape. Here it is affecting a rosebay willowherb flower.

Hazy mid-summer day on the Sods, Part 2.
The planet's fantastic life energy reaches its peak in mid to late summer as the sun's precious light shrinks by the day and every living thing senses its time is running out. On the Plains of Dolly Sods, where the growing season is already compressed by the high elevation, plants compete for the swirling, buzzing masses of insects with their gaudy blooms and produce successive waves of berries to seed new generations. The drone of the insects carrying out their instinctive missions of renewal is constantly in your head as they dive and dart and skirt around you. You barely register as a distraction against the great drama playing out here - one whose stakes are survival, regeneration, salvation. I feel so privileged to have connected with this life force in the most intimate way, even for the few short years of my mayfly existence. I will die a happy man for having immersed myself in its lovely, purposeful chaos and becoming part of something much greater than myself.

04/08/24-Sunflower in the garden good to see one out a strong symbol of summer, a resplendent Silver-spotted Skipper at Perham Down among my first of the year today an excellent few minutes watching them fizz around the meadow and still, views at Shipton Bellinger and St. John's-wort and wayfaring tree berries at Perham Down.
I also enjoyed seeing beautiful Bullfinches at both locations, Rooks, Buzzard, Magpie, lots of Meadow Browns, Gatekeeper, Common Blue, Peacock, Red Admiral, Large White, Brimstone, creeping cinquefoil, rosebay willowherb, wild parsnip, eyebright, woolly thistle and exciting views of my first ever Tawny Longhorn beetle and Purple Bar moth.
