Tumblr’dan Yüzler: Başak Notz

Bu ay, @illustratoroflittlethings adlı blogunda genellikle küçük objelere odaklanan, günlük deneyimlerini letterpress sanatı yoluyla bizimle paylaşan Başak Notz’u konuk ediyoruz.

Merhaba Başak! Bize kendinden kısaca bahseder misin? Ankara’da doğup büyüdüm. ODTÜ’de önce Çevre Mühendisliği okudum, sonra da İşletme Master’ı yaptım. Kısa bir süre Ankara’da çalıştıktan sonra UC Berkeley’e gidip e-commerce programına başladım. Ancak, Berkeley yakınındaki San Francisco şehrinin hem kendisi hem de sanat ortamı kariyerimin gidişatını değiştirdi. Ne zamandan beri çiziyorsun? Başka hangi sanat dalları ile haşır neşirsin? Kendimi bildim bileli çiziyorum. San Fransico’da çalışmaya başladığımda, yeni şehrime alışırken bolca resim dersi alıp çizime daha da yoğunlaştım. Eşimle nişanlanıp davetiye tasarımı düşünmeye başladığımda letterpress sanatı ile tanıştım. Letterpress’den çıkan sade ama inanilmaz etkili, güçlü baskılar aklımı çeldi ve nasıl işletileceğini öğrenip kendi letterpress stüdyomu başlattım. Çok keyifliydi! San Francisco’dan sonra bir süre İstanbul’da yaşayıp ardindan ailemle  Chicago’ya yerleştim. Şimdi daha çok illüstrasyon ve grafik tasarım ile meşgulüm.

Çalışmalarında genellikle belirli objelere odaklanıp, mekansız olarak çizmenin nedeni nedir? Çizdiklerim günlük hayatımda gezilerde, toplantılarda gözüme takılanlar, aklımda kalanlar. Mekanların güzelliği de etkiliyor; ama bir odak nokta seçip onun detaylarını incelemek ve sonra da gezdiğim, gördüğüm yerleri, yaptıklarımı çizimlerimdeki detaylarla hatırlamak hoşuma gidiyor. Çizimlerime genelde notlar da koyuyorum, mekanı hatırlatan. Beyazin üzerinde bir obje bana daha anlamlı geliyor.

Çizimlerin günlük gibi. Başkaları için çizerken nasıl bir yol izliyorsun? Projeye bağlı. Bazen çok spesifik istekler geliyor; imajlar, fotoğraflar gönderiliyor “şunu çizer misin” diye. Bu tür projelerde uzun süre gönderilen materyale bakıp, en çok nasıl kendimi ve müşteriyi mutlu edecek, aynı zamanda kendi tarzımı gösterecek şekilde çizebilirim diye düşünüyorum. Layout (plan/düzenleme); dijital mi, kağit üstünde mi; hangi malzeme ile gibi detaylara karar veriyorum. Proje imaj olarak değil de konu olarak geldiğinde de araştırma dönemi oluyor. Konu müşteri ve benim için ne anlama geliyor, nasıl yorumlanması gerekiyor aşamasını geçip, bir süre fikirleri ve görselleri toplayıp, eskizler yaptıktan sonra en uygun olan, hoşuma giden alternatifleri müşteriye sunuyorum. Son dönemdeki ilham aldığın sanatçılardan ve karakterlerden bahsedebilir misin? Son dönemde hem kağıt ile hem de dijital çalışan illüstratörlerin işleri ilgimi çekiyor. İki gruptan da beğendiğim bir çok sanatçı var: Rae Dunn, Carson Ellis, Wendy McNaughton, Diva Pyari, Rebecca Green, Maira Kalman, Mark Conlan, Jean Julien, Rose Wong, Julia Rothman, Marie-Laure Cruschi, Aiko Fukawa, Akira Kusaka. Bu sanatçıların bir kısmı editöryel çalışıyor, bazıları kitaplar için çizim yapıyor, bazıları da reklam amaçlı çiziyor. Hepsinin tarzı birbirinden çok farklı ve büyüleyici. Illüstratörler dışında son zamanlarda bana esin kaynağı olan bazı kişiler de Tadao Ando ve Virgil Abloh.

Panonda akan bloglar hangileri? Bu bloglar seni nasıl etkiliyor? Beğendiğim @maorisakai​, @rosewong​ gibi birçok illüstratörün yanısıra, grafik tasarım, endüstriyel tasarım ve moda bloglarını takip ediyorum. Bu bloglar, yeni trendler, renkler ve konularda güncel kalmama yardım ediyor. Esin kaynağı da oluyor tabii; ama kendi çizimlerimin, kendi fikirlerimin orijinalliğini kaybetmemek için, araştırma odağı yerine, bu blogları genelde keyif amaçlı kullanıyorum. Yakın gelecekteki planlarından ve ileriki yıllardaki hayallerinden bahsedebilir misin bize? Eylül’de küçük bir Yunan adasında sanat kampına gidiyorum. Beş gün boyunca çizim ve kaligrafi dışında başka hiçbir şey düşünmemeyi heyecanla bekliyorum. İleriki yıllar için bazı kitap fikirleri var aklımda.

When I was in college, I was obsessed with fashion. I’d do anything I could to get near it, even though I knew I wanted to pursue a career in advertising after I graduated. Still, I spent any free moment I had interning in New York, from summer breaks to literally a weeklong internship at Vogue during Christmas break. I left DC during one of the first few weeks of school to “intern” with WWD and hand out free papers to people in the tents. A perk was that we would be able to walk in as standing room for smaller shows, which I ate up entirely. I was so enamored. This was during the fall of 2007.

I started my first Tumblr a few months later, in 2008! It was great. I loved the idea of blogging within a community (Xanga, anyone?) as well as the simplicity of the platform. It was a small, weird, and wonderful space. Tumblr got me through so many of those “all nighters” I pulled in my college library when I was taking “breaks” from “studying for exams.” Looking back, thinking about all of the content I consumed (mostly liking and reblogging pictures of pretty things), I know Tumblr had so much to do with shaping my personal vision and approach to photography.

Needless to say... ten years later... having the opportunity to cover fashion week for Tumblr has been such an epic experience. It feels so very full circle.

Today was the last day of the shows, and Marchesa was the only show I wanted to see. 2007 Jane would have cried if I told her she’d eventually get to experience the magic of Marchesa in person. So today, I spent some time backstage, taking a few snaps along the way but also just taking the whole experience in. I sat down, watched the show, and spent time looking at the way the dresses flowed down the catwalk instead of setting up the best shot through my lens. And. It. Was. Amazing.

Major thank you and hugs to the whole Tumblr & IMG team for their support throughout this experience. @valentineuhovski you are the best! Also, shoutout to the aaaamaze folks I got to work alongside this week- will miss you guys to pieces!! From what I can see has gotten artists on tumblr popularity: They either are/were also fan artists, who would occasionally sprinkle in original art, which over time would make the people who followed them for their fanart of [insert popular fandom here] also get interested in their original work. Some of these artists slowly phase out fanart, others just adjust the fanart to OC ratio. The artists who only post original art usually have specific aesthetic that's very appealing to many ppl.

i mean this is one way to do it, but most of the artists i know of that are more popular than me never have posted fan art more than maybe three or four times ( unadoptable, 8pxl, rosewong, 94mlk, sarlis, petitepasserine, jjjjjjjjjjohn pusheen ect) i actually cant think of any big names that posted mainly fan art and then mainly did their own thing without loosing most of their fanbase, 

and while yeah fan art gets a lot of notes initially, all of my most popular pieces on tumblr (50k - 100k+ notes) are all ocs or personal works, infact i think i only have one fan art piece thats gotten over 10k (since most of my followers dont really care for fan art from me)

so, idk, in my experience jsut doing what you want to do usually works out best, if you like doing fan art then do fan art but if you dont like dont do it. the internet is so diverse that you can jsut do what you like and there will be a base and appreciation for it somewhere

NOTE: fan art does sell wayyyyy better tho,  every time ive done merch its fan art that sell first so if you need cash then you might wanna do that aha

Good gravy, those are some lovely colors. Rose Wong is an illustration student at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn who is already putting some really neat stuff out into the world. Girls tangled up in their own hair, gutted by tree limbs or able to shoot beams of light out of their faces are all hallmarks of her nifty line work. Definitely one to watch!
