Origination and spectacular history of the Porsche Turbo !

Kick off your moccasins and snuggle up in your favorite lounger for this is a lengthy Porsche history (despite minimizing much detail) lesson.

On August 1974, Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche, mainly known as Ferry Porsche, gave his sister Louisa Piëch a one-off 911 also badged ‘Turbo’ powered by a turbocharged 2.7-liter flat-six. The production 911 Turbo with an enlarged displacement displaced 3.0-liters and produced 256 hp at 5500 rpm (234 ponies for USA market configuration) and 253 lb-ft of torque (245 lb-ft for USA) of turbo boost torque from 4000 rpm to 5000 rpm and its front and rear suspension were derived from that of the 911 Carrera RSR race car.

Porsche didn’t invent the turbocharger—the idea goes back to a patent filed in 1905 by Swiss engineer Alfred Büchi. It wasn’t even the first automaker to use a turbocharger in a road car. No, it wasn’t BMW that beat Porsche to the punch with the 1973 2002 Turbo, think a little closer to home: In 1962 GM offered not one, but two turbocharged production cars, the Oldsmobile F-85 Jet fire with its 215 horsepower Turbo-Rocket V-8, and the Chevrolet Corvair Monza, whose 150 hp air-cooled flat-six eerily presaged the 911 Turbo’s powertrain. It was the forced-induction 911 that famously made Turbo a byword for gut-punching, giant-killing road car performance (technology that was put to use on household electronics soon after).

The production Porsche 911 Turbo (930) did 0 to 60 mph in a tick over 5.0 seconds, with 100 mph coming up in 12.6 seconds, making it about as quick through the gears as a Ferrari 365 GTB4 BB or a Lamborghini Countach, although its 155 mph top speed wasn’t quite a match for either. And it did all that with none of the melodrama of the highly strung Italian exotics: The 911 Turbo, like all 911s, was a genuine 2+2-seater. It came with a 20,000 mile warranty, required servicing just once a year, and was said to return 22 mpg. From this beginning Porsche has been constantly reengineering and redeveloping its Turbo technology, setting shattering records with prodigious leaps and bounds of horsepower and torque from a comparatively much less engine displacement than any other car on this planet.
