Just My Type

A nearby group rattled their horns with laughter as Mystic stumbled out from the rowdy crowd, barely catching himself against the wall before his legs gave out beneath him. He properly propped against it, leaning back as he waited for the world to stop spinning. He shifted slightly, casting an icy glare at the demons through messy inky locks. They continued to find humor in the situation, but had the decency to turn away and act oblivious.

Mystic closed his eyes and took a deep breath, hoping some fresh air would be enough to breeze out all substances from his system. It was all futile, of course. He defeatedly straightened back up and marched out into the sidewalk. Passersby rushed by his sides through the nightlife, all beginning to search for a place to get screwed up. Mystic on the other hand, was just ready to call it quits.

It had started as such a peaceful night. How could a simple letter have ruined it entirely? Perhaps it was the natural reaction of his body from reading that goddamn name, or even the thought of how absolutely vile he had been while knowing Mystic would be forced to pick up the letter and read it.

Something warm slipped down the side of his face and deep in his throat brewed an itch he desperately wish he could reach for and scratch.

He staggered out into the alleyway, running a pair of sluggish hands over his garments in search for the keys of his car.

Was it a good idea? Probably not. But it wasn’t like he had someone on speed dial to come rescue him from his misery. Nor was he quite fond of the idea of having someone see him in his worst state possible.

“Mystic?”

As it would appear, god found his misery entertaining.

The Founder looked over his shoulder—much annoyed than surprised—to meet the outrageously gorgeous figure of a known friend.

Dear lord, those words had not just been formed in his head. Both alcohol and drugs were truly drying out whatever brain cells remained after the mayhem he had just left.

“Just my luck,” Mystic huffed, bringing a hand up to harshly swipe away the trickling tears. He grew increasingly irate as his vision blurred repeatedly. No matter how many time he wiped his eyes into his sleeve, they would always return.

“You don’t seem too pleased,” Ruki commented.

“Thanks fo’ noticin’, Sherlock,” Mystic hissed back, refusing to face the other. “‘The fuck ‘re ya doin’ here?”

“Looking for Kou. He called me and the others to come get him, but never received a specific location.” Ruki explained. “Who would have thought we would run into each other at such place.”

Mystic found his keys in a pocket on the inside of his jacket at last and sighed. “Well, good luck with that. There’s a sea ‘f idiots outside tonight.”

Just as he tried to walk away, a hand swiftly picked the keys out from his grasp. He jerked around in an attempt to snatch them back, but Ruki lifted them away form his reach. “You weren’t thinking of driving yourself home in that state, were you?”

“What’s it matter to ya?” Mystic snapped. “Give me my keys!” He pounced forth once more, but was unsuccessful a second time.

Ruki staggered back from Mystic’s aggressive attempts. “I’m not letting you be behind the wheel when you cannot even speak coherently.”

“And just why the fuck do you care?!” Mystic wailed, tears dripping down a long his face once more. He suddenly weakened under his own shame and rushing thoughts. The drunken Founder quit his tantrum and collapsed against the Vampire, holding onto his shoulders and plopping his forehead against his chest. “Just leave me alone…”

Ruki watched the pitiful display in silence, finally thinking it safe to lower the hand with the keys in them. “Are you done?”

No response.

Mystic felt his feet be swept off the ground first, before it settled in his entire body had been picked up. He hadn’t noticed just how heavy his limbs felt up until that instant. He didn’t fight the gesture, as he was too far gone to even care. “Thought you’d come to find your brother.”

“I’m sure Yuma and Azusa can handle Kou on their own,” Ruki responded, scanning the cars lined up along the side of the road in search of Mystic’s. “Do you still drive the same vehicle?”

“Same old Bentley,” Mystic mumbled in response, drying off his cheeks into his sleeve. “Don’t say ya thinkin’ ‘bout drivin’ me yourself?”

“I still recall some of the lessons from that time you offered to teach us.”

As Mystic had said, an older model Bentley awaited for its owner’s return; faint scratches and subtle dents adorned its obsidian paint and silver bumpers.

Ruki carefully settled Mystic on his feet, wrapping an arm around the other’s waist to hold him upright. He tugged at the door’s handle and propped it open, aiding the drunken one into the front-passenger’s seat. He assured the door was properly closed, then walked around the front the other side.

Ruki felt slightly out of place sitting behind the steering wheel. He fumbled around with the pedals, stick, and wheel as the memories of Mystic’s lessons returned to him.

“Ruki,” Mystic suddenly spoke; eyes gone into a void as he gawked forth. His voice seemed incredibly loud inside the enclosed space of the car’s inside.

The Vampire paused and turned to look at him.

“Was really thinkin’ of gettin’ fucked silly tonight,” he chuckled drunkenly. “Was just on my way to meet up with someone. Caught me before I did somethin’ very dumb.”

Ruki agreed in his mind, but said nothing.

“I assume you ain’t willin’ to drive over to their place.”

Ruki unwittingly gripped the steering wheel. “Absolutely not.”

Mystic chortled. “So, now what?” He rested back against the seat and rolled his head to meet Ruki’s gaze. “Ya ain’t got a clue where I live.”

“It could always be as simple as you telling me,” Ruki replied, knowing well just where the drunken man was trying to stray the conversation.

“Don’t wanna go home, though…”

“Mystic, we are not discussing this right now.”

The Founder exhaled through his nose, clearly dazed. “Just for tonight?” He reached out to grip the elbow of Ruki’s blazer.

Ruki glanced down at the fingers clinging onto the fabric of his garment, then up at Mystic once more. His grip on the steering wheel tightened further. “Mystic, we cannot keep—”

“Ruki,” he pleaded, moving his hand up to wrap it around his arm.

The Vampire couldn’t help it as his eyes moved over the Founder’s figure. He inhaled once more, shocked at how quickly the enclosed space had filled up with his scent. He turned away, flexing his fingers over the steering wheel. He turned the key on the engine, but didn’t move from the spot for a while.

Mystic leaned out to peek at his expression. “Ruki?”

Ruki gave him a quick glance and shook his head. Whatever spell the Founder’s words could cast, he had been entirely enthralled. He moved the stick shift and turned the steering wheel, driving off into the street.

“You are…” Ruki muttered, “the absolute worst.”

Abandoned WIP Soulmate AU Ruki Mukami x Reader

I found this in my drafts and thought I might as well post it for anyone who’s curious as to what I had planned for it. I’m afraid it’s a bit of a mess as I wrote it completely out of order. What I’ve done is separate out the written sections and the bullet point bits I hadn’t finished with asterisks so the full plot is here, it’s just not all in nice prose.

Connection with soulmate: you heal more quickly when in close proximity to your soulmate.

-Ruki was not born with an obvious soulmate connection. And even though most tended to show themselves with time, it seemed of little consequence. 

While the majority of humanity embraced the idea of having a predetermined partner, there were certain circles in the aristocracy who disregarded the idea, only interested in matches that would have some monetary or political benefit. 

Ruki’s family was in one of those such circles, but they did not seem to suffer for it. No, and as a child, their place above the common folk had indeed seemed more important than some mystical connection to another person. 

- And then came the bankruptcy.

His mother fled, and not with just anyone, but her soulmate, who she had met only days before their family officially fell into ruin, like some sort of omen. 

And then he found his father hanging at the bottom of the garden.

After he was changed, Ruki gave little thought to the idea of soulmate’s at all. The connection never showed itself anyway. That was fine though, if that was the price he had to pay for becoming more than just livestock, then so be it.

Years passed, most spent in the demon world under Karlheinz’s tutelage and Ruki never once paid the idea of his soulmate any mind.

That was at least until the vampire king brought up his plan involving the latest sacrificial bride; you.

- You weren’t sure what grave sin you’d committed to end up living in a house with the Sakamaki brothers. You hadn’t known they were vampires when you first learned you were being sent away to live with the sons of some high-up politician, however it had become painfully apparent what they were the moment  Ayato had sunk his fangs into your neck.

It hadn’t taken long for you to realise that your chances of escape were slim at best, leaving you had the mercy of the brothers.

As if to rub salt in the wound, the only friend you’d managed to make in your time at Ryoutei Academy continuously needled you as to why you were staying with the Sakamakis. Her favourite theory was that one of them was your soulmate and you just didn’t want to admit to it out of fear of the brothers popularity with the girls at school.

It served as a painful reminder that, given your current circumstances, it was unlikely you’d get to meet your own intended before one of the vampires grew tired of you and one of them finally put you out of your misery.

- Ruki wasn’t sure what he’d been expecting of his saviour’s chosen Eve. There didn’t seem to be anything particularly remarkable about you, the scent of your blood aside. 

He and his brothers had been ordered to observe you from a distance at first, to establish whether any of the Sakamakis had already been chosen as Adam or, if there were any signs that one of them might be your soulmate.

It was unlikely, Karlheinz had told him, but it wasn’t unheard of for vampires to have a human soulmate and it would certainly prove to be interesting. 

As far as Ruki could tell however, you had no bond to any of the purebloods in the slightest. They preyed on you at random and the misery in your eyes was uncomfortably familiar.

It seemed they would have to intervene, to either force you to select one of them as Adam or at least force some sense of connection between you and on of the Sakamaki brothers.

Ruki was determined not to let Karlheinz down, and the idea of one of the Sakamakis being a suitable candidate was almost laughable. No, he would find a way to make you choose him, by whatever means.

-Ruki awoke one day to the sensation of itching concentrated over his upper back. It’s not the same that the phantom burning that sometimes followed him from his nightmares into the waking world, or the dull ache he occasionally got on rainy days when he was left alone with his thoughts. No, this felt like tiny insects were scuttling over his skin, irritating the scar tissue.

He rolled over, trying squash the temptation to start scratching when he caught sight of your face, only faintly visible thanks to the thin tendrils of sunlight leaking through the curtains. You looked peaceful, expression devoid of any worry or fear, hair splayed out over your pillow. You were defenceless. Vulnerable.

Even with whatever healing ability you possessed, he could still make out traces of his bite wounds on your neck. For some reason the sight of it was comforting. Whatever traces the Sakamaki brothers left on you had disappeared, leaving only the marks from him. He would become Adam.

He couldn’t afford not to. And with that the sensation on his back was forgotten.

- Add in some sort of realisation about Ruki’s scars. Maybe Reader catches sight of his back, Ruki expects them to ask about it but they don’t so he looks at it himself.

- Scene with him and other Mukami bros where he asks them about unless effects of your blood. This leads him to think it may be sign that he’s going to awaken as Adam.

 ***

-The air felt thick and heavy as Ruki waited for the reaction of his mentor and father figure to his recount of the events of the past few months to him, after making the crossing to the demon world.  Surely this was good news, a way of finally repaying his debt, and yet the Vampire King’s expression remained neutral, mired in thought.

Eventually he spoke, his voice deep and smooth. “This is an interesting turn of events, however what you have experienced is not a sign that you are becoming Adam.”

Ruki felt his throat tighten but refused to show anything in his expression. “Then what- is this simply an effect of drinking Eve’s blood?”

“From what you have described, no. While it’s  true that Eve’s blood possesses special properties, even it should not be able to heal old scar tissue.” Ancient golden eyes met his and even before Karlheinz uttered his next words, Ruki felt something seize in his chest. “It’s most likely this is the work of a soulmate connection between yourself and Eve,” he huffed something close to a laugh, “a strange twist of fate, I had hoped the chosen Eve might share a connection with one of my sons, but I did not anticipate this. I will need you to return her to them.”

Ruki wasn’t sure he was breathing, he could barely hear anything above the noise in his head. “But surely if there is a connection, then there’s still a chance I could become Adam. I can do more-“

“If there have been no symptoms of the awakening by now, even with your connection to Eve then it’s unlikely you can become Adam. It seems it truly must be a pureblood vampire, although I appreciate your efforts thus far.”

Some of his emotions must have slipped through the cracks in whatever part of himself he kept them walled off in and shown on his face, for the Vampire King’s expression shifted into one of perhaps the closest thing he could come to pity.

“I understand this is likely disappointing but the plan must come before all else. You understand that, don’t you Ruki?” And although it remained unspoken, the underlying meaning in the words is clear, to do another other than what is being asked of him, anything to disrupt his mentor’s plan, would be an act of betrayal.

“Of course, sir,” he replied, standing. “If that will be all, I’ll return to the human world and deliver Eve to your sons at once.”

Karlheinz waved his hand in a polite dismissal. “Of course, although, it believe it may be best if you made preparations to return to the demon world permanently. It will not do to have Eve potentially distracted by her connection to you.”

“Understood,” Ruki walked out of the room, determinedly ignoring the thing crumpling in his chest.

“Ruki, please tell me what’s going on,” you said, turning to look at the boy from where he walked beside you.

You’d been awoken by the oldest Mukami brother in the early afternoon, several hours before you had to wake up for school. Any questions as to what was going on had been ignored as you were ordered to get dressed and met him by the entrance to the manor. Once you’d done so, you’d been all but dragged from the house, which to lead to where you were now, being lead along the road with no idea as to why or where you were going. Ruki’s expression yielded nothing either, whatever glimpses of humour and traces of humanity you’d seen in him wiped clean.

After several more minutes of walking in tense silence, you finally start to recognise the scenery and your blood run cold in your vein as you come to a stop.

“What-“

With barely a glance in your direction, Ruki grabbed your upper arm, his grip hard enough to bruise as he proceeded to tug you along. “Keep moving.”

“Please, Ruki, I don’t want to go back.” You say, unable to keep your hands from shaking as you take in the scenery leading up to the Sakamaki mansion, the same you’d seen all those months ago, back when you had no idea of the horrors the world contained. The Mukami brothers were far from perfect but anything was better than going back to that house. Back to the room filled with Kanato’s wax dolls or the bathroom where Laito had nearly drowned you in the bathtub after you’d struggled too much for his liking.

You’d miss the slight warmth you felt as you watched the Mukami brothers argue over an evening meal. The way that for a moment, they could almost be normal boys as Kou whined over not having Vongole Bianco while Yuma told him to shut his trap and Azusa watched them with fondness in his eyes.

Kent (Amnesia Memories) 

Possibly the most vanilla boi on this list but who cares. He was a sweetheart and awkward, stiff but in a charming - ‘I don’t understand these emotions’ type of way. You’ll find a lot of cool kuudere types on this list, and Kent kind of falls into that category, though he blushed a lot and became very affectionate.

Van Helsing (Code Realize)

I love this man, but his route huuurt me. Dayme it was heavy. I find his whole situation and backstory incredibly interesting though and he feels like one of the most ‘world weary’ otome men I’ve come across. I just want this guy to find peace. Also, he hot.

Ah now we hit the point where my favs become problematic. I blame Diabolik Lovers. It’s not MY fault. Ruki is one of those characters you can label as a bastard and be totally correct but then turn around and write an essay on him, he has a whole lotta layers and an interesting backstory. Also his Master kink is hot.

Tei (Nameless: the one thing you must recall)

L-look, it’s not what you think. I-I’m not into yanderes too...pshhaww nahh....Tei’s route wasn’t low-key nightmare fuel in places noooo, nope. Aahaha... *sweats*

Jumin Han (mystic messenger)

Jumin is best boy and I won’t hear of anything else, nope. Case closed. I love him, your honour even if he is a huge mess of tangled threads.

Shiraishi and Yanagi (Collar Malice)

I liked both of these guys, and I enjoyed how Collar x Malice plays with your perceptions of their standard types (Shiraishi being presented as the coy, possible yandere but subverting expectations and Yanagi being presented as a Kuudere only to quickly become Team Mom with a delinquent past) they made my heart melt but kept me engaged.

Yang (Piofiore)

*points to possibly the worst guy* this one is my favourite. 

Listen...this is like a ‘Date a Villian’ otome route and I love it. Yang’s route is my favourite, Yang is my favourite, I can’t help it! Toma’s route was my guilty pleasure for keeping me on my toes (despite not caring for Toma too much) and Tei kept me constantly second-guessing, but Yang’s route is like sexy Russian roulette. One wrong answer and you’re heading towards a Bad End. He’s neither a yandere, kuudere or anything easy to sum up- he’s just unpredictable, calculating and has a voice like melted honey~

(I got a little burned out on these so save for this and one other ask, I’ve decided to cap them. Sorry for the wait!)

I immediately had a theme for a ship bias ask when I received this one, so here we go - Ship Bias: Otome Edition.

I’m only including games I’ve personally played or watched playthroughs of. I’ve yet to play Café Enchante (Though I will soon!), Bad Apple Wars (Though I have this and haven’t played it yet) and a few others on Steam and Vita, and most mobile games outside of Mystic Messenger (because I hate the pay to play setup). 

I’ll split these up by game as it’s a bit easier to work through.

Code: Realize - I’ll go with my favorite otome ship for Sonia (that I’ve never actually written, sadly): Abraham van Helsing. And I only really could see it after I figured out how to work Sonia into the C:R universe that these two made a whole lot of sense. A princess with a country that has set an example of humans and vampires coexisting harmoniously visiting Britain, who’s trying to do just that? Bonus that she’s generally a cheerful sort in comparison to van Helsing’s general grumpiness, but a well-mannered lady all the same. They would desperately need someone to cook for them, though. My other favorite ship for Sonia in this verse is with Victor Frankenstein, because she’d be fascinated by his experiments and yet very kind and gentle to him.

Hakuoki - Or rather ‘how do you pick from so many love interests?’ Honestly, that’s a challenge for me because of just how many characters this series has (and how many feels, etc). But I could see Sonia getting on with some of the characters with more mature, subdued attitudes: Harada, Iba, Saito (I may be biased here because I have a thread going but it’s a very good thread!), Sannan, maybe Hijikata? I mostly just don’t see Sonia actually falling for the demon characters (surprisingly), or the likes of Toudou, Nagakura, or maybe Okita.

Collar x Malice - Kei Okazaki. Full stop. One, he gives me Nagito vibes in both the main game and the fandisc. Two, Sonia will enjoy his quirks, his general positive attitude, his obsession with strange food, and the fact he enjoys horror movies. These two would get along very well, bonus if he’s assigned as her guard for that trope I really happen to like.

Amnesia - It’s been awhile since I’ve played or replayed this, but possibly Kent? Animal death part of the story aside, Sonia would be intrigued by how dedicated he is to his studies and they’re both dumb enough not to know when they’re on an actual date. Bonus: they could meet in Tokyo or the UK. 

I’m not sure about the other characters, but probably not Touma. Sonia would not be okay with being treated the way the heroine was treated.

Diabolik Lovers - aka. trash vampires. Watching playthroughs of the games is way better than watching the anime. In any case, I’m already biased towards @sadisticbloodlxst​‘s Ruki Mukami. Sexual interests aside, these two are both leaders, enjoy novels, and come from aristocratic backgrounds and can likely understand some of each other’s stresses and concerns if they decide to open up to one another. My other DL ship weakness is with Reiji Sakamaki, a ship I barely touched the surface upon ages ago but would love to write with the right partner.

Because for a guy so obsessed with rules and etiquette, convinced he’s a better leader and heir than his older brother, and has no qualms telling off everyone else when they’re being inappropriate...try sassing an actual princess with etiquette lessons. He can’t nitpick at her for being unrefined: Sonia’s basically been raised to be poised and polite since birth. I imagine that would likely irritate him and so he’d have to find other ways to be particularly nasty towards her, which she tends to spurn with her general kindness and sunny, optimistic outlook. Not to mention her fascination with the supernatural, and vampires in particular.

I have a lot of unused headcanons for this ship. 

Piofiore - I guess Dante Falzone likely makes the most sense but I think Sonia would have more fun interacting with Gilbert Redford instead. She’d be very surprised, though rather impressed as well, that he’s forged a new family that isn’t as strict about requirements for membership, and he’d gladly take her around his area of town himself. As much as Sonia enjoys exploring new places, she’d be very much drawn to that friendly attitude.

Mystic Messenger - I don’t have a solid answer for this one, actually. I think it would be based on individual portrayals. It’s been awhile since I played the game and I didn’t play a lot of the updates beyond the initial release.

Err... I think Ayato would be the one to copy on me on a Science test. I think Yuma is more serious than Ayato. I hope he won’t catch me doing this though or I’ll get problems...!

3.- Would you rather have Kino and Azusa or Shin and Laito, as your Butlers?

Clearly. I don’t think the other duo would be loyal to me (especially Shin).

4.- Go on a date with Reiji at a Aquarium or go on a date with Subaru at a Cafe instead?

I really like aquariums, so I’d totally go there (even if I like less Reiji than Subaru ^^”).

5.- Would you rather go support/see Kou at one of his Concerts or go support/see Shu at one of his Violin Performances?

Even if I like Kou more than Shu, I don’t really like Concerts because they’re generally noisy (with fans screaming for example, and I hate that)... Classical music is much more calming ~

6.- In a Math Project would you team up with Ruki and Shin or with Reiji and Yuma?

Errr... I don’t know. I just picked by feeling. :v

7.- Who would you put your bets on, Kanato eating the most chocolates or Ayato eating the most Takoyakis?

I think they’re both capable of doing that, so I picked the one I want to support because he’s one of my favorite. xD

Hesitated between Shu and Carla lol (I don’t want to sleep on a coffin, sorry Subaru !). I’ll pick Shu since I’ll be not very confortable with sleeping in a KING’s bedroom... And hell no, I respect their privacy, and I wouldn’t want anyone to peak at my stuff sooo...

Preference. And I feel like he’ll be more reliable than Laito. x)

I love Water Amusement Parks (and there’s Azusa in the group).

I think the atmosphere will just be less tense with the first group than the second, and I prefer that, I’d be more at ease.

18.- Who would you cook breakfast for? Who would you make a scarf for? and Who would you do a drawing for?

Breakfast for Subaru, scarf for Kou and drawing for Azusa ~

19.- Participate in a Circus as Carla’s Knife thrower assistant or go to a Casino with Shin and be offered as a bet/reward by him in the Roulette Wheel game? (So if Shin looses you’ll be taken away by whomever won)

Just a shot in the dark here, but I'm curious are there any other games that you enjoy like DL?

I’m not sure if there are any others I play that I’d say are specifically like DL. 

I know that Dance with Devils and Black Wolves Saga (both of which are made by Rejet aka the company that makes DL) are sort of similar from the point of being otome games with some darker themes but I haven’t played either of them for myself (although I really want to).

In terms of other otome games I like, I’m a big fan of Nameless~The one thing you must recall (made by Cheritz, the company that made Mystic Messenger) and I would 100% recommend that if you’re a fan of yanderes (although it’s not quite as dark as DL one or two of the endings are pretty messed up). I also really like Amnesia, Code Realize and Collar X Malice, although you’re probably already familiar with those three if you like otome games. And The Cinderella Phenomenon is a very good free otome game that can be found on steam.

Period Cube ~Shackles of Amadeus~ is an otome game that doesn’t necessarily have as strong of a plot as some of the above games but I personally adore it and Ruki, Shu, Laito and Kino’s VAs voice dateable characters (plus Shin’s VA voices a non-dateable one 👀). And again, the bad endings are very good if you’re a yandere fan.

I’ve recently played the Wayhaven Chronicles, which is an interactive novel featuring vampires (although the portrayal of vampires is really different to the one of them in DL). Currently there are two installments in the series but I think the author plans to release another five.

If you’re looking for a very very dark visual novel then I’d recommend CUPID, a free VN on steam, although it’s not a dating sim. Quick warning though, it does contain mature content.

I don't tend to like super bland MCs, childhood friend bois or Shouta characters. I think Hino from 7'Scarlet was probably the most boring route I've played in an otome. I don't think I hate any characters tho...I think I disliked Rika from Mystic Messenger lolol

I'm sure there's something nice and lovey-dovey I could think of but I remember in Amnesia Memories I had no idea Toma was 'like that' and was playing a different route when I stumbled onto a bad end, and he 'took care' of someone in his room. MC asks what's going on bc there's clearly blood behind him and Toma very amiably is like "it's not my blood and it's not your blood, so there's no need to worry about it." I was like - 0-0 so shocked! I guess that stuck with me.

Similarly in Nameless the One thing you Must Recall, Tei friggin shook me with his yandere reveal when he says "I could hurt her much better than you."

I think its bc these characters were so sweet beforehand, they shocked me! lolol I'm struggling to think of any fluffy quotes.

My principal idea was for the route to focus more on Mystic and Ruki’s former troubled relationship (since it’s something I’ve always hinted at but never really showed on the blog)! I do expect to make a few scenes that could be generalized as “Mystic x Yui” (though not necessarily in a romantic way) through the route, but the main ship to be featured will most definitely be with him and Ruki. I hope you’ll like what is to come 🏃‍♀️]
