Got in a6 mile run with the Striders tonight at the Lakefront. Feeling great and ready for Saturday. Went and picked up my packet for OUC today. On the way up, I drank my Shakeology for breakfast. Run Perfect Run

Marathon is the newest fundraising fad that is catching steam in every Indian city. For those who want to give it a go, every month there are at least a couple or more to choose from. Without getting into the economics of such ventures I have observed that the human factor is far more entertaining.

I personally have run 5 of them in the 10km category since the beginning of the year and in all that time I have certainly seen my share of odd creatures who sacrifice their Sunday morning sleep to get all sweaty.

My most favourite type is the runner's groups. An odd mix of people with different health metres joins together to motivate each other to run for health. They have their own code,  language and even their own set of warm-up exercises. God forbid the certificated person hired by the organisers should ask for something different – sneers, groans and giggles erupt from these groups. They, of course, do disdainfully look down on us newbies who turn up alone to just run and not socialise.

After most of us have warmed up, the divas walk in. Either tailed by their faithful male partners or a bunch of woman creating a cacophony about nothing in particular. These ladies always perplexed me because they manage to look spring fresh at 5am; complete with kohl-lined eyes and shining lips. I always wondered if they ever broke a sweat. They always run in formation, if in a group or if they are with their significant other they run in tandem.

Social media howlers are by far the most annoying. From the moment the set foot into the holding area and through the length of the race – they just can not get enough selfies. They seem to feel for more accomplished with the number of photos they take rather than the thrill of conquering the distance.

The serious runners are the ones who never break a smile. They have their Dri-fit T-shirts, water-sippers, knee guards, fanny packs, mobile are bands, Headphones, running apps clocking their every step and oil rubbed in all the right places. They will rush past you once the race is flagged off and they will acknowledge your presence only at the finish line. Why do they do that? I think they are secretly overjoyed to see how many people came in after them.

The first timers are the ones who stop along the way, take long water breaks and even stop at the refreshing stations to check out what’s on offer. It’s quite a spread in a professionally organised marathon you can pick between salt, electrolyte, water and pieces of banana. Why miss out on a freebie no matter what it is, right!

I guess I fall into the loner's category. The ones who come alone, quietly finish the run, pick up their medals and go back home without much noise. Not sure if it’s a bad or a good thing but it definitely gives me a lot more room to observe.

Back with more marathon adventures soon. Till then run a little for the fun of it.
