Sooo. Umm. I ended up taking the lab animal tech job because it pays the best.... And hopefully I'll be working ~2 weekends a month at the local emergency clinic. (I have to call them back...note to self lol). And I also gotta get in touch with pig farm guy ab volunteering but I'm on the other side of the state rn so whatever. This job pays really decently and it'll increase as soon as im an ALAT/LAT and they'll pay for all the training to do so. They just finished my bg check and I have a health screening I need to do (plz put vibes out they do not drug test me as it is randomized lol if it's hair I'm fucked). Starts 18.50, for reference I was paid 12/hr at my last clinic :::::))) I'm hoping i can also get involved with the enrichment/welfare and veterinary care side of things as long as I'm proactive and show interest

I've got a zoom call tomorrow with the program director for the animal science program at a university one town over to help figure out what my options are wrt pursuing that. They have a partnership with RUSVM which is my top choice right now even if it means loan hell forever

There seems to be a snowballs chance in hell for me.... ???? We will see. I'm hoping maybe I can get some sort of scholarships/grants ????

It’s been 2 months since I started my new job and it’s refreshing to say that I’m loving it for now!!!

Backstory: I graduated vet school and started at a one doctor private practice thinking I was going to get mentorship, but man was I dead wrong. No mentorship. No support. Just criticism and basic bullying. Disrespect of my time. No lunch break whatsoever even though this is a norm in the vet world. The hour drive became exhausting and I started to dread going into work. Imagine going thru 8 years in total of school, 4 years of vet school on an island to HATE your job and question your life choices. I really thought I was in the wrong career. My anxiety was thru the roof. I couldn’t sleep at all. I ended up getting a relief job that treated me like royalty compared to my full time job. 7 months later I get the strength to tell myself that it isn’t me and that I should try something different than private practice. Long story short, I come across a shelter job opportunity and I apply, worried that I didn’t have the skills or experience to work in a shelter I had never applied.... well, I get the interview, I loved it and it appears that they loved me as well. FYI I did a rotation there when I was a student. I get the job. Meanwhile, something happens at my full time job that I end up giving my two week notice, let me tell you it was horrible, the insults, the shaming..... they ask for 4 weeks.... I agreed to it. Those four weeks went by like molasses, the last day I stayed after hours to help, I get yelled at the manager, I finish my work and leave without saying goodbye....why would I?! You just screamed at me on my last day for something that had nothing to do with me. I’m jobless for a month but I travelled and enjoyed the time off. The offer from the shelter comes in along with another offer from a private practice. Guess what?!?! They offer me 2x more than what I was getting paid at my prior job.

And now I’m happy. I love my coworkers. I enjoy work. I love my patients. I still have a lot to learn but I have a great environment to learn from. And I’m not questioning my career choice anymore.
