Dear Friends, Skarloey and Rheneas have run their line for many years. They have seen it all, through good times and bad times. This is a story from when their railway was on its last wheels, and the hardships of winter were taking a toll on Rheneas in particular. The Author

Felt like following up with previous thoughts about the relationships between the Hatts and the engines of the NWR, and the relationships between the Sams, Hughs, and Handel Browns and the SR engines.

The relationship between the many Sir Topham Hatts and the NWR engines is quite good, but it's a strictly employee/employer relationship. There is a carefully maintained professional distance between the Hatts and their engines, and this is by design--there are many engines on the NWR, at least 80 according to official RWS canon, and the Hatts can't show any favoritism toward any one group, or else it breeds resentment and everything falls apart. Trains, for better or worse, have excellent memories and will remember slights. If it's interpersonal between peers, that's one thing, but if it's from the controller himself, that's another. Engines will either be tripping over themselves trying to please him and causing more problems, or they'll be catty with each other, more than they already are. Plus, the NWR has a lot of businesses relying on it, to the point that the island's economic stability depends on his line. There's a lot of pressure for things to go right, and Sir Topham can't be seen as incapable of keeping his employees in line and on task given just how many people's livelihoods depend on him, including said employees (engine or human). No, it's better for everyone on the railway, human or otherwise, if Sir Topham Hatt is always neutral and gives the impression of being the caring yet firm employer so nobody gets Ideas.

(Are there favorites, though? Of course there are; it's Thomas, Edward, Percy, and Toby. But of those four, only Toby has gotten the privilege of seeing the side of the Fat Controller that's just Bertram or just Stephen.)

Meanwhile, for the Skarloey engines, their line is a) much smaller, and b) not nearly as concerned with being a huge, booming business spanning multiple industries and interests. They're a tourist line that does mineral shipment on the side, and their goal is mainly to stay afloat and serve their community, as echoed by the philosophy of Sir Handel Brown I. As such, the Owner, Thin Controller, and Foreman can all afford to be somewhat closer with the engines. I imagine that they also draw a distinct line between professionalism and family--there is a distinct difference between the Thin Controller and Mr. Peter Sam--but all of the Skarloey engines have seen when the professional mask comes off and their friend and family member wishes them good night with a genuine and caring smile. And the engines respect that line very much, because not every engine is as lucky as they are to be treated and loved so well. There is no fear of being scrapped or sent away; the only expectation is that they will do their best. Duncan especially feels this, being the only SR engine to have worked anywhere else before coming to Sodor.

(Sometimes I think that Sir Topham Hatt envies the SR management because they CAN have those close relationships with their engines and he really can't.)

But the distinction is important; the NWR and SR feel very different for a multitude of reasons, and the engines are only part of that.

Ants

Ants all have the same basic stats, but the different colors have different abilities.

Ants have armor on their main body. Red ants also have an additional plate on their head, but this makes them completely blind. The armor can’t be broken off. Their feet are sharp and thin, but this means they are unable to grip things and cannot climb poles.

Deeper in the colony, you may find eggs. These eggs spawn every 2-3 cycles in an empty chamber, and hatch in 4-5 cycles. They can be destroyed with stab and explosion violence, but they are guarded by aggressive ants. If an egg is destroyed, the larva inside can be eaten for 3 pips.

Their bodies are always the same color, but their armor color can range from darker to lighter.

Cachebugs

Cachebugs are a variant of stowaway that has formed a symbiotic relationship with the ants. They are always active, and ants will drop dead creatures underneath them in exchange for safe passage. Cachebugs will also store items for slugcat if offered a creature and a weapon, and will spit it back out in exchange for another offering of a dead creature.

They are much more impatient than normal stowaways, and they will attack near instantly rather than waiting. They will pause for a moment if the creature going underneath is carrying a dead creature, but if they attempt to pass without offering the creature, the cachebug will proceed to attack.

Cachebugs have the same variation and biology as stowaways, save for their tentacles, which they can control like rot tentacles. The tentacles are also placed differently, and there are 2 instead of 3.

The Antpup

If you get eaten by the queen while still alive, the antpup will be there when you return next cycle. This can only be done once. The antpup has similar mechanics to regular slugpups, with a few key differences.

The antpup has a predetermined ID: 11420.

Antpup is also extremely aggressive compared to normal slugpups with max aggression, and it will target neutral and passive creatures of similar mass if not following the player or fighting a threat. It can be taught to not attack as often, but it will always favor violence if threatened or agitated.

Antpup will also only eat meat. Theoretically, it can eat plants, but it will normally treat them as if they are inedible.

Depending on the slugcat, Antpup may have additional abilities.

Survivor, Monk: no ability

Hunter: deals x1.5 damage with spears and lillypucks

Gourmand: weight is 1.0 rather than 0.9

The reason the ants are all the same and you getting eaten alive makes something different is because dead meat decays really fast in RW and the DNA gets all bungled up really fast, so there isn’t a huge amount of genetic material to work with. On the plus side, it means it's a lot easier to insert the ant DNA. Since you were alive when you got eaten, the DNA was left mostly intact and made a creature with a lot more slugcat-like traits.

Stanley (RWS) Time!

These are all to do with my AU series, so I guess I can’t call them headcanons, exactly. Just some ramblings. Hope you enjoy! :)

-In 1987, the Thin Clergyman publishes The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways. Stanley is still sore over his depiction in the RWS, so he turns his nose up at it. But Duke greets him at the sheds one night with a copy, saying he might want to read a certain passage.

-The passage is about him. And this time, it’s right. His name, his improper re-gauging, his history — all of it.

-It turns out the Thin Clergyman wanted to make things right. Stanley is surprised but also touched. After some thought, he reaches out to thank him for the corrections… and to forgive him. The Thin Clergyman’s done his best to make amends and match his good intentions with his actions. That’s enough for an engine long weary of grudges and wasting time.

-Following Stanley’s lead, the other SR engines begin speaking to the Thin Clergyman again. While awkward at first, things smooth over. The man spends his final years a friend of the railway once more.

-Once he sorts out his new life, Stanley finds he and Duncan get along like a house on fire. They share a “coarse” sense of humor and a tendency to say things as they see them. If allowed to do so, they’ll spend hours watching Duncan’s tapes of George Carlin. “Unlike you lot, he gets it!” Duncan snaps at everyone else when they complain.

-But as he also points out in private, it does Stanley good to laugh. It’s the kind that leaves him wheezing like he’s out of water, too happy to even speak. It’s the laugh of someone who didn’t have much of a chance to do so before.

-When the others notice Stanley seems more at ease after these watch sessions, they agree. Rusty shoots Duncan knowing smirks that he endures with minimal grumbling.

-Speaking of Rusty, I’ve decided that my joke in “Straddling The Lines” about poker night does come to pass: They and Stanley do wind up joining Duke, Rheneas, and Skarloey on said evenings! There’s no such thing as teams in poker, but they cheer each other on as “fellow youngsters” when given the chance.

-They practice their poker faces in advance, sometimes making a game of it: whoever goes the longest gets to delegate their tasks for the day. Rusty appreciates doing something other than maintenance work every now and then, and Stanley needs his breaks from goods and demanding passengers. (The Thin Controller sees this helps their productivity and allows the adjustments to the schedule.)

-For a short while, Stanley is a bit starstruck by Skarloey and Rheneas. Even in his MSR days, their reputations as wise, brave, and kind engines were known to him, as they were to every engine on Sodor. After his rescue from the mine, he also learns about their heroics in the SR’s tough times.

-Seeing them bicker, tease, and swear at each other helps bring Stanley back to earth. So does their gentleness towards him, which eases any lingering anxieties of his.

-Rheneas appreciates Stanley’s frankness while encouraging him not to take on too much, to know he’ll always have others to help with burdens. Skarloey delights in Stanley’s refusal to put up with anyone’s foolishness, noticing when he gets a bit too angry and offering his own experience in managing a short temper.

-Duke and Stanley work to find their rails with each other. Neither of them want to go back to their MSR dynamic, but anything else takes more time to puzzle out. It doesn’t take long at all, though, for their nicknames of “youngster” and “old timer” to stick.

-They banter about the local news and politics, pull the occasional train together, and commiserate over their shared experiences in feeling “out of time,” after being lost for years. Duke refuses to give up his poker secrets, but Stanley swears he’ll get them out of him one day.

-They’re friends, but also mentor and student. They’re Duke and Stanley, and they get along. That’s all that matters, they decide.

-Peter Sam’s optimism is of a balm to Stanley after years of hopelessness. He’s also grateful for advice in pulling coaches. He tries to repay this by teaching him some of the working songs he picked up in America, as well as by reassuring him when he’s unable to keep from feeling low. Peter Sam appreciates this to no end.

-Sir Handel is boastful, but has immense respect for Stanley and so shows off… which he denies as Stanley teases him for it. They squabble over silly things but would bash anyone’s buffers for each other. Sir Handel also introduces Stanley to Gordon, which somehow goes both much worse and much better than expected.

Okay this made me think: it seems like there’s a pretty significant difference in the punishment style of the Sir Topham Hatts vs. the people in charge of the other railways on Sodor in the RWS.

Sir Topham Hatt(s): Typically uses loss of privileges / temporary demotion to annoying/boring jobs nobody wants to do, “time outs / grounding” (i.e. stuck in the shed), or “natural consequences” based punishments. Henry being shut in the tunnel was an exception, and seems like a frustrated “Fine, fuck it, if you wanna stay in the tunnel that badly you can stay in the goddamn tunnel forever for all I care!” which wasn’t really thought out. I really think TFC1 was expecting Henry to change his mind during the significant amount of time it took to put up a brick wall out of sheer pettiness, or in the next few days, and didn’t think through that Henry wouldn’t be able to speak loudly enough for a passing train to hear when his fire had gone out.

The Thin Controller: Openly threatens engines with pain and mutilation as a punishment. Like, Sir Handel’s was technically a “Okay fine, if you’re sick then you have to go to the doctor” type punishment but taking an engine apart to a major extent for maintenance shouldn’t be their footplate crew’s job, so he was threatening to have him dismantled by people who weren’t really qualified to do it. Which is also collective punishment for the driver and fireman being ordered to physically harm him. He also threatened Duncan with “If it happens again, I’ll cut down your cab, and your funnel too.” Not subtly like STH did in the TV Series (and may have been joking since he immediately made a “Your career is... on the line” pun after that).

Mid-Sodor Railway Manager: Actually fucking followed through on that kind of threat and turned an engine into a stationary generator, although admittedly it seems like Stanley was a “We cannot let you keep running or it’s only a matter of time before you kill someone” situation.

Culdee Feel Railway Manager: Godred’s story may have been made up, but the real, present-day manager took Lord Harry/Patrick’s name away. Not just his nameplate, his name. He’s just referred as No. 6 in the following story and later renamed (with his “consent” but still). Like imagine a parent just telling a misbehaving kid “You’ve lost your name as punishment” and refusing to use their name, and making all their siblings, teachers, and every other living being they interact with not use it. I think this qualifies as emotional abuse at the very least.

“Now,” said the Thin Controller at last, “I want every engine to take part.”

“I d-d-don’t feel well,” quavered Sir Handel.

“You poor engine,” said the Thin Controller gravely. “you can stay in the Shed...”

Sir Handel smiled broadly!

“...and your Driver and Fireman shall take you to pieces. That will make a very interesting picture. Just what we need.”

Sir Handel’s feelings were beyond words!

My initial take on this was "wait are his crew qualified to be doing this level of maintenance is this some kind of fucked up collective punishment type thing" but actually since the S.R. is a heritage line especially it wouldn't be that abnormal for footplate crew to be taking things apart would it? So yeah you're right, it's clearly meant to be a "Well if you're so sick you have to go to the doctor" natural consequences type punishment by both Mr. Percival and Awdry.

On the other hand, I just reread the story to see the exact text, and I think there's more to it than that and Mr. Percival kinda dropped the ball here. In a vacuum the punishment is... still not great in a "this was normal 50 years ago but is pushing it today," because while disassembly isn't agonizing torture, I think the wording Mr. Percival used implies a level of taking things apart that's a bit more invasive and uncomfortable than a typical "kid faking a cold" doctor visit and possibly still somewhat painful - like maybe equivalent to a blood draw?

And obviously "You're pretending to be sick to get out of school/chores so we'll take you to the doctor and film it and post it on social media" would be a big no-no. Engines may not have the same concept of privacy and bodily autonomy as humans because they're machines which need human intervention to function at all, but since those things are inherently so limited for them I think using taking away what little they have as a punishment is still kinda fucked up.

Like I guess the parenting analogy would be "Kid pretends to be sick so he can stay in his room when company's over and not talk to anyone, so I made him go to the doctor and also took away his door during the visit."

Also: I'm trying not to bring engines' traumatic life histories into everything I swear, but "Little Old Twins" is pretty explicit that the BBC guys going around the railway taking notes and "appraising" everything was a trauma trigger for Peter Sam and Sir Handel because it reminded them of the MSR's bankruptcy and closure and presumably also whatever awful experiences they had at Peel Godred. Peter Sam was relieved when he found out the truth but I think Sir Handel was stuck in his initial emotional response of hostility and feeling unsafe and threatened even though there wasn't any actual danger.

On one hand Sir Handel got overlooked because Peter Sam was so obviously freaked out and Sir Handel seemed to be just being a grumpy, self-important dick as usual, but it still seems out of character to the point where someone should have noticed, because... he's a self-important dick. Maybe I'm reading his personality wrong but I'd normally expect him to be all in favor of "making an exhibition of himself" and having people talking about how cool he is on national television. And really, when ever in the railway series has any steam engine had that strong a negative reaction to positive attention and publicity that isn't out of jealousy?

The worst part is, Sir Handel's trauma is over lack of autonomy over any aspect of his life: being put under tarps for a year and separated from his home and his friend and... probably shoddy maintenance by the Sodor Aluminum Company. And his punishment was such a demonstration of that lack of autonomy, even if Mr. Percival wasn't intending it to be a "See? I can have you taken apart if you displease me, and then publicly humiliate you while you're in an extra-vulnerable state" type power play.

tl;dr I totally understand why Mr. Percival was pissed that Sir Handel was, apparently, throwing another tantrum for no good reason and lying about being sick to get out of responsibilities again, but I think the punishment was embarrassing in a different way than most of the punishments/consequences in RWS are embarrassing, and it was a poor handling of the situation because Sir Handel essentially got punished for having an 'ugly' trauma response in a way that may well have reinforced that trauma.

ok so im delirious and reading thru the wiki summaries of some RWS stories (as one does) and the last story in Little Old Engines is about BBC coming to the SR, so like the engines gotta pull the BBC crew around the line or whatever. Sir Handel is all oh i dont wannaaaaaaaaa and. Mr. Percival. The absolute mad lad. Just goes.

Exploring Ixalan's Story: A Question of Confidence , Annotated

Welcome guys. This week Ixalan was fully spoiled and with it the next installment of the MTG Story. Today I’ll be going back to my roots and annotating the story.

Huatli looked around the plaza as she and her cousin passed under the arch at the entrance to Pachatupa. 

Pachatupa is the capital of the sun empire, and takes it’s name from an inversion of Tupac Amaura, the last native ruler of the Inca. 

The high arches of the Empire are to let large dinosaurs pass through.

Only the two knights' mounts (two bright-eyed clawfoots) seemed to care about their presence.

In the same way we don’t call dogs Canis lupus familiaris , the Dinosaurs of Ixalan aren’t referred to be their taxonomic names as we usually do. The made up dinosaur names also give them an excuse to have more fantastic dinosaur designs. Clawfoots are based on Dromaeosaurs, commonly known as Raptors and are often used as mounts.

Inti held out a hand, and Huatli passed him the stolen sword. He rolled his wrist to test its weight and handed it back. "You should have seen their priest," he said. "Hierophant," Huatli corrected.

Hierophant isn’t a rank used in Spanish or Catholic clergy, but a term stemming from ancient Greece, were it was used for the leaders of the mystery cults. The word means “to show the holy” and the job entailed sharing holy wisdom with acolytes. It’s well known today because of it’s Tarot card, which (tying back to the Catholic vibes) is also known as The Pope.

The Legion of Dusk are very religious, being co-ruled by the Church of Dusk and their Queen Miralda, and their Vampires wade into battle, feeding only on the blood of non believers.

A warrior-poet is a character type of a civilized artisan warrior, who finds glory in battle as well as the arts and philosophy. While the rank here is totally fictional Hautli’s status as a poet (and somewhat similar name) show a link  to  Nezahualcoyotl. 

A famed warrior-poet himself, he ruled the city state of Texcoco and revolutionized Nahua poetry by writing from a personal point of view, a sharp divide with the anonymous hymns of earlier generations. His poems were stepped in oral tradition for decades and to this day he is the namesake of the  Nezahualcóyotl Award, given to writers in indigenous Mexican languages. Nezahualcoyotl’s personal style is reflected with Hautli’s emphasis on using poems to share her feelings.

Poetry that is honest has magic in it; the ability to let other people feel what you feel is a very powerful magic indeed." 

Huatli’s magic based on feeling is an example of wotc showing the non destructive parts of red magic.

Huatli lay a hand on her dinosaur's rough hide and willed her to be still.Wait, she urged, sending the scent-memory of food through the connection between her and the beast.

Knights of the Sun Empire form mystic bonds with their steeds. This power is connected to the Threefold Sun, as seen in the text of Sun-Blessed Mount.

The city around them shone with amber and the light of the noonday sun.

While amber-like resin was heavily used in Mesoamerica, these copal, served as incense for ceremonies, it’s less solidified state making it more aromatic for burning.

The temple itself had been built on the foundation of an older temple, which had been built over several ruins even older than that. The Sun Empire itself was much the same. It was the latest iteration of a land whose rulers were constantly vying for power, building on top of the old and reaching ever higher with the new. Whereas the River Heralds had once controlled the continent, under the leadership of its new emperor, the Sun Empire had cemented its grip on the land.

This process is called Spolia and is very appropriate for the setting. By the time The Spaniards arrived in Mesoamerica a long list of various civilizations had risen and fallen in prominence from the Olmec to the Zapotec to the Maya and Toltec. The Aztec Triple Alliance Cortex encountered was the product of a long line of mesoamerican cultures. The idea of the Sun Empire supplanting the River Heralds takes it’s cues directly from how the Mexica people rose from wandering squatters and mercenaries to the dominant power of the region by usurping their predecessors. 

The thing was flimsy and thin, meant for quick stabs rather than smooth cuts, and a tacky black rose was welded to one side. To think that these inferior craftsmen thought themselves conquerors.

The weapon is a Rapier , invented by the Spanish. Destreza, a martial art of it’s use was formalized around the same time they made landfall in the Americas. The Spaniard themed legion of dusk use them, but also have fangs at the tips to showcase their vampiric nature. The Black Rose is an emblem of the Legion of Dusk, and like the Sun Empire symbol, it looks very much like the seal of Ixalan’s binding.

"Kinjalli, hear my call! The time has come to wake the sleepers, To pierce the eastern shadow That would darken all our days.

Tilonalli, hear my call! Fill your children's hearts with fire That we may be the dawn that breaks To immolate the Dusk.

The Sun Empire worship three aspects of the sun, one for each color  of mana they use. Kinjalli is the wakening sun, of white mana Tilonalli is the burning sun of red mana. Huatli being RW homages these aspects of the sun in particular.

Kinjalli is close to K’injal which would be Mayan for “Sunify.” While Tilonalli is a corruption of tōnalli, the Nahua word for day.

A bit of irony in that the Aztec inspired faction is the one with the Holy trinity.

"Driving the Brazen Coalition and the Legion of Dusk from our eastern coast means that we are ready to reclaim the south," Apatzec announced.

Miraldanor is the name of the Vampire territory in the south of Ixalan. It’s named after their queen, and is where they first landed.

He had the body of a blacksmith, but the head of an animal that Huatli had only seen around Legion of Dusk forts—a bull? Heavy iron chains were wrapped around his chest, and he seemed to glow from within like a furnace, a steady flow of steam rising from his snout. 

Bulls aren’t native to Ixalan and Hautli only knows them from the Legion, just as in real life bulls were brought to mesoamerica by Europeans. Angrath’s burning horns are drawn to look like the burning ropes hair Blackbeard used in his hair for intimidation.

"I am the dread pirate Angrath," he said, "and I seek the Immortal Sun."

Huatli laughed out loud. "You and everyone else, fool."

“Dread Pirate” is a term taken from the classic film/novel the Princess Bride. Angrath’s foreign accent and alien way of fighting are because he is a planeswalker, one who is trapped on Ixalan and as Angrath’s Marauders tells us, not very happy about it. His name is an on-the-nose meld of Anger and Wrath that is similar to Dominarian hero and Tahngarth of the Weatherlight Saga.

The Immortal Sun is a lost treasure that all four factions on Ixalan want for different reasons.

The Vampire believe it will make them immortal without needing to drink blood.

The Sun Empire wishes  to reclaim their lost city of Orazca

The Pirates want the ultimate treasure

and the Merfolk want to keep it from anyone else because they believe if found it will cause doom.

Her vision burst into a miasma of color and light, sound rushed through her ears, and she felt her body begin to break away from itself. It was bright and warm and should have been frightening, but it felt like the most natural thing in the world—she felt her head pass forward, deeper into the color and light, and she saw.

It was a city that shone with the warmth of gold.

Huatli’s first planeswalk is an attempt to get to Kaladesh, a plane ruled by the creativity she so values and one that has a golden city, just as in her culture’s legends.

Her perception was yanked sharply back, as if some unseen force was pulling her backward to the jungle. Whatever door she peered through had slammed shut, barred her from entry. Everything was flying again through color and light, sound and noise, until her body rearranged itself on the forest floor.

Huatli's blood pounded, and her vision settled on a strange triangle-and-circle symbol hovering with a strange glow above her head.

Huatli’s first planeswalk is stopped by the same sealing that trapped Jace and that also traps Angrath.

She was not a seer, yet she had seen. She was not a voyager, yet her mission was to voyage. Huatli was two things, and neither seemed connected to the destiny that lay ahead.

Huatli closed her eyes and calmed her busy mind. Her dreams were dappled with gold, shining with the colors of a place beyond her any she had ever seen. The dream shifted, transformed, became more prophecy than dream, and she saw herself as she would someday be.

Huatli has been compared to Joan of Arc by her creators, in that  both are female knights driven by religious visions. The Golden City of Orazca’s mythic and sacred value to the Sun Empire as a bygone city mirrors the status of of Aztlan as the legendary homeland of the Nahua people.

I haven’t actually done all that much praising of Rooster Teeth aside from red Vs. Blue, in fact I’ve made an equal number of critical and praising posts about RWBY. You on the other hand have not said one good thing otherwise despite proclaiming to be a fan.

And just as well, that constant attacking will shut them off of actual criticism as you drown out actual critics thus not only would you damage the entire show, you risk harming the people behind it.

Everything you have called me more applies to you than me and you have a stated history of projecting: You might want to stop.

And I do find it convenient that you assume that I’m white. I’m part Filipino, part Spanish, Part Chinese, andPart Italian. How do we know that you’re not the white asshole who is constantly doing this sort of BS? - Seriously. Yeah, I’m white but I’m also autistic meaning I suffer prejudice as well (seeing as Autistic people are often compared to being diseased or brain damaged). And if the White Fang where a group with a neurological disorder, I would still berate them. In fact, I would berate them more so because they give me a bad name so that doesn’t work.

And that’s one person versus two people I know and unlike you, they don’t have a tendency to overreact and scream. Not to mention the fact that factions like the White Fang do exist in real life (Black Lives Matter for race, Muslim terrorists for religion ect). I would beat the ever loving shit out of a KKK member should I see them, even if they’re defending themselves from a group of people who are attacking them solely because they are white. You can’t claim that it is definitively racist when the majority says otherwise.

Also, why didn’t you call any BS on the section about LGBT+ Representation? - Were you too afraid to call out any of the reasons that I had there? - Or were you just one of the assholes who cherry-picks something to suit your needs? - Like how you accuse the rwde tag of doing?

By the virtue of giving you a chance to prove your self and not telling you to kill yourself as well as the fact that I don’t manipulate the facts nor am I being hateful does put me above you.

The problem is: This is basic human decency. All I’m doing is being a human being. The fact that I see myself above you should scare you because I think so lowly of myself.
