rewrite choices
These are my longest rewrites on my list. Some have been sleeping on the back burner of my mind for ages. So, now, I ask you, the readers, which of these you'd like to see first. Because I need to know where to devote regular writing time. Otherwise, I'll just wander over the landscape writing-wise. So.
Targeting A Cold Heart: Akoya x Io x Ryuu: Projected Word Count: 96,000: 32 chapters & 3,000 words per chapter. A tangled triangle of human, angel, and demon that will end up how you expect it and they don't.
Hunting The Hunter: Ruki x Renamon: Projected Word Count: 120,000: 30 chapters & 4,000 words per chapter. Somewhat like canon but also with active magic, shapeshifters, vampires, and other creatures of magic. Someone thinks Ruki is their fated love, but she has other thoughts on the matter. Ruki x Renamon.
Kept In Shadows: Shun, Yuuri: Projected Word Count: 120,000: 20 chapters & 6,000 words per chapter. Yuuri is a vampire. Shun is a shapeshifter. Yuuri likes keeping pretty things close - and hurting. Implied sex, but no actual romances (tenative Yuuto x Shun but not decided yet)
Across The Threshold: Ryou x Mizael: Projected Word Count: 130,000: 26 chapters & 5,000 words per chapter: Mizael the dragon keeps away from most people, and doesn't expect it when a vampire crosses his paths on a mission of his own. Ryou x Mizael.
Shards of Ice: Rio, Rin: Projected Word Count: 148,000: 37 chapters & 4,000 words per chapter. Rio has been a Frostflame for years. Rin is just frosted over. Ice isn't easy to control for one born to fire, but for the sake of Yuugo and the sake of her world, Rin will do what she has to do. Mild Yuugo x Rin, mostly Rio & Rin friendship.
Shards and Sunlight: Asuka x Mizuchi: Projected Word Count: 150,000: 35 chapters & 2,500 words per chapter. Asuka vanished years ago. Fubuki's still looking for her. Meanwhile, in the Barian World, Asuka, Queen of the Barians, searches for the past she can no longer remember, and meets someone she doesn't want to forget. Asuka x Mizuchi.
Keys To The Tower: Durbe x Chris: Projected Word Count: 200,000: 50 chapters & 4,000 words per chapter. In a world of magic, Sir Durbe finds a hidden tower with a sorcerer cursed to remain inside of it. He wants to break the curse, but it's not that easy. And there's a lot that Chris Arclight isn't telling him. Durbe x Chris.
To Frost To Flames: Ryou, OCs: Projected Word Count: 240,000: 40 chapters & an average of 4,000 words per chapter. Ryou is a nascent Firestarter, who ends up kidnapped while a child still. His life isn't in his own hands now - and it's going to be very, very cold. No actual ships but hints of Ryou x Yuusuke.
Eyes of Light: Kouji, Kouichi, Chosen: Projected Word Count: 250,000: 85 chapters & an average of 3,000 words per chapter. A rewrite of Digimon Frontier where Kouji and Kouichi meet just before the trip to the Digital World and end up traveling it together. No actual ships.
Rage, Revenge, & Reprisals: Lucemon, Black Mist, Chosen: 300,000: 75 chapters & an average of 4,000 words per chapter. Post both Zexal and Frontier. The last remnant of Black Mist and the last remnant of Lucemon cross paths. This isn't going to be good for anyone (but lots of fun for Lucemon and Black Mist). No actual romances decided (potential Kouji x Kouichi, potential Lucemon x Black Mist)
Way Too Easy: Yuuya, Yuuto, Yuugo, Yuuri, others: 360,000: 111 chapters & an average of 3,000 words per chapter. The war didn't happen when they were fourteen. It might not happen at all - or perhaps it'll happen in a different way, when the four boys end up as vampires. No decided ships as of yet.
Dragon Magic: Seto, Mokuba: Projected Word Count: 360,000: 90 chapters & an average of 4,000 words per chapter. AU where Seto and Mokuba are dragons. Possibly related to an old story of mine, possibly not. I need to plot more on it to be sure. No ships decided as of yet.
War of the Undead: Ryou, Samejima, others: Projected Word Count: 360,000: 80 chapters & an average of 4,500 words per chapter. In a world where Brron fused all the dimensions years ago, those who survive, humans and spirits alike, must forge a future together. Which isn't easy when someone's trying to engineer a war between zombies and vampires. If any ships, probably Ryou x Yuusuke.
Walk The Dark Paths: Projected Word Count: 450,000: 36 chapters & an average of 12,000 words per chapter. Yamato falls through a crack in the worlds and ends up in a place where he's - Piemon's son? Is that his own ancestry or is it something else altogether? (breeds-verse and breeds-verse AU)
Ninjetti Rebirth: Projected Word Count: 510,000: 85 chapters & an average of 6,000 words per chapter. A mild rewrite of the PRiS era, focusing on the Rangers on Earth, who gain new powers in order to defend Earth, leaving the Space Rangers free to fight Astronema in space. Ships of choice: Kat x Tommy, others mostly undecided
I answer most questions about these if anyone wants more details. These would take months to write, but they're the very longest. So I ask you readers for your thoughts and opinions.

GX Rare Pairs Week. I want to write for it, but I set myself a personal challenge: no ships I've previously written for other Rare Pairs Weeks & to take the time to develop them all properly. Unfortunately, because the ones I picked require a lot of effort to really work the way I want, then to complete them by the end of the year I would need to write between 4,000 & 5,000 words a day, starting once I'm back from vacation.
So, I'm torn. I have 4 out of 7 plotted. I can plot the remaining 3 this week if I put in the effort. Or I can try something else: like choosing a Rare Pair I haven't written yet & writing those 7 fics for next year or something.
On one hand: platonic Ryou x Manjoume x Asuka, Edo x Saiou x Ryou, Yuusuke x Saiou, Ryou x Johan, Kenzan x Alice, Camula x Taniya, & Asuka x Mizuchi
On the other hand, Guardian Baou x Chaos Sorcerer.
What to choose?

[fanfic] Demon’s Despair, Demon’s Determination
Binding a demon prince wasn't easy.  It could be done, if one knew the demon prince's true name.  It wasn't impossible.  But it wasn't likely and Ryou had truly not believed there was anyone in this world who could do it.  Those who knew his true name were few and far between.  Honest and Fubuki did, of course.  As angels, they were some of the few who could even pronounce it properly.  Juudai knew his name; Juudai knew the True Name of every demon and devil of every rank, and rumor ran that he knew the Name of a significant portion of the angels as well.  But Juudai wouldn't give away someone else's name unless they'd angered him to the point he wouldn't even deign to destroy them personally, and so far as Ryou knew, he'd done nothing to anger the King of Hell that much.
That left very few other options.  Edo might know - but they'd not spoken to one another in centuries, and Edo wasn't the type to take petty vengeance like that.  If he determined that he could no longer stand Ryou's existence, then the fiery phoenix would come and deal with him personally.  He'd not give away Ryou's name to someone else and let them reap the benefits of entrapping a demon prince.
There were the Hunters of the Amber Goddess - but those who served Her typically dealt with vampires, not demons.  So that wasn't an option he considered seriously.
Truth to tell, no matter how hard he thought or strained against the enchanted bindings that kept him in place, he couldn't think of who it might be or how they might get hold of his True Name.  By every measurement he knew, it shouldn't have been possible.
For a few moments he even considered the possibility that they'd somehow forced Shou to reveal it.  That wasn't entirely impossible.  His brother knew his Name.  His brother was a demon as well, and could be summoned - or would be able to be summoned one day.  Juudai liked Shou, however, and tended to keep him near at hand.  Ryou had only been summoned a handful of times in the past because of odd circumstances - not the least of which was an angel of love thinking he needed to get set up with a shadow mage.
Which had worked out rather well, but that wasn't the problem here and now.  So far as Ryou knew, Yuusuke was all right.  He could vividly recall how he'd ended up here.
He wasn't sure of how long ago it had been.  Time didn't seem to exist in this place.  But their small group had strolled along, heading more or less towards the town of Horomaki.  Rumor had it that they had a small infestation of imps and that meant it was uniquely suited for their particular talents.  If Yuusuke couldn't persuade them to depart, and if the existence of two powerful angels didn't do the trick, then Ryou would step in and order them to get back home.  There wasn't an imp in any world that wouldn't obey the word of a demon prince, especially one like him that had the ear of the King.
Pain wasn't something that Ryou knew very well.  He'd experienced it a time or two and found it interesting, even intriguing to a degree.  But the pain he'd felt at times before then wasn't anything compared to the shriek of iron in his mind and the clash of silver and shadow that tore into his essence, what humans might call his soul, wrapping tight around him, and pulling him through the dimensions.
He'd barely had time to scream.  He'd definitely not had time to say anything, before he found himself in the center of a circle crafted especially to bind him and only him.  He opened his mouth to demand to know where he was, but not a single word had passed his lips - an enchantment of silence, one that by all that he knew shouldn't have worked at all.  And yet, like so much else, it had.
So from then until now, if such words made any sense here in this timeless abyss, he remained.  There wasn't any room for him to move more than a finger's width, and silence rang out in the nothingness all around him.  All of the power he exerted against the bindings did nothing.  This place was truly crafted to keep him captive, and he had no idea for how long.
"What a pathetic sight."  A voice of cold iron and contempt welded together.  Ryou could not raise his head to see who it was but he heard footsteps regardless.  He thought whoever it was made a point of having their steps sound, when no other sound came here.  Effect.  Annoyance.  "So much for the mighty demon prince."  Oh, the contempt grew even stronger with those words.
Ryou could not move but he pressed mental lips together and came to some quick conclusions.  There were few who might have been able to do this - and he'd all but forgotten about this one.  He knew the voice now that he'd heard it.  It had been so very long.  Eons, as humans reckoned time.  For demons, perhaps not so much.  But he'd lived among humans for years now.
A flicker of pale white wings came before him and a hand reached into the area around him to tilt his head back, raising his eyes so they met icy pale blue ones.  The Angel of Reversal stood there - Iaoth, as some called them.  There was a smile on those pale lips - everything about them was pale, save for the burning hatred in their eyes.
There wasn't much that could scar an angel or demon, save the weapons of the other.  Ryou had scarred this angel once, in the very long ago.  Their own scars rested on him, hidden by his black feathers. Iaoth brushed cold fingers up from his chin and over his head.
"I really did not think that she spoke the truth, but here you are.  Completely at my mercy."  Again that rage surged through pale eyes.  "As I was once at yours.  And you had no mercy then."
Ryou wasn't going to deny that.  He merely twitched, what would have been a shrug if he'd had the freedom to move.  There wasn't ever any mercy between angels and demons when their paths crossed in anger.  Everyone knew that - except for Fubuki, who insisted that everyone could get along if they tried hard enough.
"Do not expect to see that shadow mage of yours, or his angels,"  Iaoth advised him.  "As I am certain you have noticed, this place has no time.  It is not connected to the realm of mortals.  You and the mage have not signed a contract with one another. Therefore, you can stay here no time at all - and it will be centuries before you return to the human realm.  If I let you return at all."
In the handful of years he'd lived among humans, he'd seen the expression of rage and terror on their faces, mostly when he showed up.  He almost never felt it for himself.  One needed a certain amount of connection to humans to experience human emotions.  He knew that he was growing that - it was inevitable, when one associated with humans.  But he'd always faintly favored the softer ones, since he'd experienced more of those with Yuusuke.  Of course, he'd experienced anger before, and frustration, and annoyance.  He'd never felt fear to this extent.  The idea, the simple idea that without warning or time to say good-bye or anything he'd been torn away from Yuusuke, from those he considered friends - it wasn't right at all.  It wasn't what was supposed to happen.
He was supposed to be beside Yuusuke for all of Yuusuke's natural life, to persuade him to a bargain and a contract at some point, so when Yuusuke's life reached its end, they would be together in Hell.  Contrary to what many humans thought, Hell wasn't a place of punishment.  Especially not for those whom Juudai favored.  Yuusuke would be honored there for his knowledge and for being Ryou's consort.   They would be together for all time.  If Yuusuke wanted to be reincarnated, then Juudai could arrange that, and Ryou would find him again when he was old enough.
It wasn't supposed to be like this.  He wasn't supposed to spend who knew how long in a timeless void, with Yuusuke never knowing what had happened to him.
Iaoth chuckled.  "I can feel it already - your despair.  The loss of your hope.  Demons don't do hope very well, do they?"  Again their fingers brushed over his face.  "I can taste it.  So delicious.  Who knew that demon's despair could be like this?  I should have tried it sooner."
They had always fed off of emotions.  Most of the time it had been human ones, and the kinder, softer ones.  This didn't harm humans at all and frequently could be a source of help to them.  But before now Ryou had never known them to feed off of demons, let alone the despair of a demon.  He fought to keep it from them, to deprive them of even a flicker of emotion.  But when Iaoth spoke, it wasn't that easy.
"Has he passed yet?  I won't tell you.  Truly, I don't know.  I don't care.  He means nothing to me.  But you hurt me.  You lured one of those I guarded to the side of evil and I will never forgive you for that."  Those icy fingers trailed down him, and the touch of an angel on the skin of a demon was like tiny drops of poison and pain.  Ryou could do nothing to resist and Iaoth savored his impotent fury at that.
He wanted to at least have the option to talk back, to fight back.  But the angel did not allow this.  "I think you are going to be of great use to me.  Already I feel stronger just by being here where you are.  I'll return later.  Perhaps someday I'll bring you the mage's soul - wouldn't it make a lovely night-light?"
Ryou would have bitten them if he could.  He would have lashed with his tail, struck with his horns, done anything and everything to prevent that from happening.  But the bonds kept him in place and Iaoth gave a chilly laugh before fading away into the endless shadows all around him.  Ryou called up every scrap of power he held within himself and struggled against bindings he couldn't even see, nor could have if there were lights.
Nothing.  Nothing at all.
The maddening angel - or perhaps mad angel - had been right about one thing.  There was no way to tell how much time would pass in the human realm while he languished here.  It was perfectly plausible that Yuusuke would grow old and pass away, or fall victim to something that Ryou could have protected him from, before the demon prince found a way out of here.  It wasn't something he wanted to think about, but in between bouts of trying to find the faintest weakness in the restraints, he had to think of something, and his thoughts inevitably turned to his mortal lover.
He could make a bargain with another demon to find me?  He wasn't sure of how possible that was.  Most demons of the kind of power it would take to find him here would be able to scent Ryou's magical signature on Yuusuke and not come anywhere near him unless they could clear it with Ryou first.  And with Ryou here, that wouldn't be happening.
Perhaps Juudai can help?  That, or Honest or Fubuki helping, would probably work better.  As far as Ryou knew, it wasn't possible to keep a demon's location away from Juudai.  But he had to know what to look for, and if they didn't ask Juudai, then there wasn't any way he'd start looking.  No one liked asking Juudai anything if they could help it.
There had to be other answers, ones that he couldn't figure out just yet.  Exactly what they might be eluded him.  All he could do was rest in this place of nothingness and anticipate the next time the horrid angel turned up.
For the life of him - if such a term could be said to apply - he had no idea of how long that took.  But Iaoth returned and moved right over to him, sinking ephemeral fingertips into his essence.
"The despair deepens,"  they murmured.  "You are like the finest of wines to me.  So rare, so tasty.  I will drink deep from you."
That wasn't at all what Ryou wanted to hear.  He tried to pull back, despite knowing that he couldn't.  He'd not given up that hope yet, but all his efforts only made Iaoth chuckle even more.
"Do you regret corrupting my charge?"  Iaoth wanted to know.  They didn't wait for a response that they weren't going to allow Ryou to make in the first place.  "I killed him, you know.  It was for his own good.  Best to have his soul cleansed and kept safe than put where you could work your foulness on it."
They held up their hand and a gem appeared in it, gleaming as bright as the sun, as pure white as the moon.  "Here it is, safe and sound."
Ryou didn't remember this one's name.  There had always been few who could summon him, but this had been so long ago and he'd had more interesting parties to deal with.  But he knew one thing for certain - the proper place for a soul, be it corrupted until it couldn't be human anymore or so pure it glowed, wasn't as someone's night-light!
Perhaps something of that made it into his expression.  Iaoth tossed the gem carelessly between their fingers. "Safe forever, with me.  As he would not have been with you or with that King of yours."  They hissed softly.  "You may be assured I've not forgiven him for his corruption of Johan Andersen, either."
I wouldn't call it corruption.  More like they all fell besottingly in love with one another.  Ryou commented silently to himself.  Few knew the particulars of that.  He did for two reasons - he'd seen it happen and what he hadn't seen Fubuki mad a point of telling him.  In great and horrible detail, with pictures included.  Demons didn't have nightmares as a general rule.  Fubuki liked trying to figure out what might do it.  He'd certainly come closer than Ryou cared to admit.
If Iaoth could tell what he thought, they gave no hint of it.  They tucked the gem back into their belt pouch, before regarding Ryou again.  "I think the next time I come, I'll have the essence of that shadow mage with me.  Look forward to it."  And then again, they were gone.
Ryou knew every language of mankind and the underworld and had a passing familiarity with that of the heavens.  While he couldn't speak aloud now, he recited each and every curse he could in his mind now, backwards and forwards.  How dare they!  How dare they threaten Yuusuke like that!
If he's trapped like that, then I'll never see him again.  If Yuusuke passed a natural death, then he would go either to Heaven or Hell and have the option to be reborn.  If Ryou could ever escape from here, then they could see each other again.  Fubuki would probably fight for it, citing something to his superiors about the "healing power of love" and "two lovers separated by tragedy, now reunited".  There were enough angels of love who would eat up that kind of nonsense.
No.  That wasn't going to happen at all.  Ryou wouldn't let any of it happen.  He'd not let Yuusuke's soul be taken by this angel nor would he just molder away here.  Demons might not have hope, but they had something else that shone just as strong and could provide just as much strength.
Determination.  Willpower.  Ryou's outstripped every demon he knew save perhaps Juudai, who had Yubel and Johan to support him.  So now he focused his thoughts, centered on the bindings all around him.  He knew everything there was to know about demon magic, and a bi here and there about angelic magic.  He also had a very strong smattering of human magic, with a strong bent towards shadow magic.  I there was a way to escape this, then he could find it.  He would find it.  Nothing in this world or any other would make him give up on that.
First, to find out exactly what the bindings were crafted of.  He closed his eyes and relaxed himself, letting the power that held him captive wash over him, so he could taste it and learn it for what it was.  He remembered his oldest teacher - Samejima.  Samejima taught him that one could do nothing without knowing what one worked with.
This was the magic of light, without a doubt.  That wasn't a surprise.  Demons were, for the most part, weak against the like.  There were exceptions, though Ryou wasn't one of them.  He rested and tasted, drinking the knowledge in, despite how horrid it tasted to him.  Ah.  Yes.  Now he knew the spell - Binding Chains.  Just the sort of thing that Iaoth would use to bind him.
But just as darkness could be weak against light, light had its own weaknesses.  Such as darkness itself.  He might not control it to the extent that Juudai did, but Ryou saw no reason to let that stop him.  He'd been steeped in shadow for longer than mortal civilization had existed. If anyone could get out of this, then he was that demon.
He couldn't move his lips or his fingers or his wings or tail.  What he could move was his mind, and what was magic, especially demonic mage, except for the exertion of the mind and will over that which was around them?  What could be a weapon of deeper darkness than one of the first demon princes to stride across Hell itself, third only to the King and Consort Yubel?
So he strained.  So he fought for the tiniest scrap of energy, of darkness to work with.  It wasn't easy in the slightest.  But he refused to give up.  He folded the weapon of his will around the binding spells, and ever so slowly, he could feel them starting to give way.  Perhaps it was just as well that time didn't exist here.  It meant he had all the time he needed to work with.  So he worked his will on the enchantments, and bit by bit could feel them give way.  He'd not tried this before - and now that he had, he wondered if Iaoth had lied about - anything.  Everything.  Or perhaps even worse, had told the truth.  Just to let him try to escape, give him that flicker of hope only to whisk it away, crush it into powder.
If that happened, he promised himself, if Yuusuke died without him, then he would wage war against Heaven itself to get him back.  He wold tear the golden gates open and leave a mass of bloody feathers and broken minds in his wake if need be.
Such an image kept him going, until once again he heard those unnecessary footsteps that betokened the approach of Iaoth.  Now he resumed his position, though he was far more capable of moving than he'd been before.  He waited.  This would be it.
Iaoth strolled up to him, wings swaying gently behind them.  In their hand they held a gleaming stone, black as onyx and nightfall.  They regarded it distastefully as they approached.  "So this is what the soul of a shadow mage who whored himself out to a demon looks like."
They tightened their grip on it.  Ryou could not let this last for another breath.  He surged upward, wings snapping outward, tail lashing around to catch hold of Iaoth's legs and yank them down, snatching away the gemstone.  The moment that he did, he could feel what was in the gem - or to be more accurate, what wasn't.
"This is nothing,"  he growled, savoring the first words he'd spoken since finding himself here. "Nothing but rock."
Iaoth laughed, before reaching up to snatch the gem back and crush it to powder between their fingers.  "Perhaps this one is.  But who is to say that I can't still take his soul?  You think he'd not give it to me, in exchange for you?  Love blinds humans.  Angels know this far too well."
Ryou's claws dug into the skin of Iaoth's throat.  He didn't like touching angels, especially ones that didn't like him.  It was worse than them touching him.  But for this, he'd do it.  "You'll have nothing of his, no matter what."
"What can you do to stop me?"  Iaoth taunted.  "You can escape my bindings but can you escape here?"
Ryou started to tighten his grip.  Now that he was out of the enclosure, he could feel the spells that kept him in this realm/not-realm and he wasn't certain if he'd ever be able to get through them all, or that he'd know which way to go if he did.  He'd never been here before.  He couldn't begin to guess the way to either Hell or the human world.
"Oh, I think with a little help, it shouldn't be a big problem." A very familiar voice spoke.  Ryou jerked his head around to see Juudai standing there, leaning on a column of darkness that hadn't been there a moment before, his tail casually twitching, his wings spread for balance, and his eyes shimmering molten gold.
Ryou glanced back at Iaoth, whose eyes now shifted over to the King of Hell.  Fear flickered through their expression, and just as Iaoth had savored his own despair and fear, now Ryou savored theirs.  No one wanted to see Juudai with his eyes that color, not when he also smiled like that.  His eyes revealed his emotions, for good or for ill - and right now, ill seemed far more likely than anything else.
"Let them up,"  Juudai ordered, pushing himself off and strolling over.  "You've got a lover and a couple of friends to get back to."
Ryou nodded, taking a step back and releasing Iaoth, who scrambled away, but not very far.  Not when Yubel's foot landed on one wing, and Johan's demon-crafted sword slammed down on the other side.  Both of them looked every bit as angry as Juudai himself did.  Juudai smiled.
"We'll take care of this.  Heaven gave them into my hands.  They won't bother you again."  Juudai regarded the angel as one might a mildly irritating bug.  "I'll see to that."
He raised one hand and flicked something towards Ryou, who caught it automatically.  "That's a guide to your lover.  You owe me a favor for this - he was getting ready to make bargains he's not ready for."
Of course.  That wasn't a surprise.  He'd worried something like that might happen.  As much as most demons would keep away from Yuusuke because of Ryou's scent on him, there were still those who might be drawn to him because of that.  Better that they never got the chance.
As the three closed in around Iaoth, Ryou focused his thoughts on what he'd been given - a line of shadow that led out of here, giving him a trail to follow.  He shot along it in a breath, feeling himself sliding through the dimensions until light burst into being all around him.  The light of the sun of the mortal world - he sank to his knees the moment he entered it, breathing hard.  Traveling like that drained his power.  Perhaps that was part of why he'd not been able to work his way out sooner.
But he was here now, and he could feel Yuusuke's presence not that far away, along with Honest and Fubuki.  He spread his wings, leapt into the air, and spun until he found which way to go.  Swift as the wind he darted along, before aiming downward, and crashing more than he landed in front of Yuusuke.
"Ryou!"  The shadow mage grabbed for him and Ryou grabbed back, arms going around one another, lips touching lips, wings wrapping around the mortal.
"Yuusuke,"  he whispered, the fear and despair that had settled into him from the moment of Iaoth's first words dispelling at once.  He brushed his horned head gently against Yuusuke's skin, savoring the sense that the other was alive and all right and it didn't seem as if that much time had passed.  "How long?"
He was ready to hear anything.  A few months.  A few years.  Not that it mattered, not now that he had returned, but he wanted to know.  At least it hadn't been a few centuries.  But if he judged this area right, they'd not gone on far from where they'd been when he'd vanished.
Yuusuke peered up at him, violet eyes blinking quietly, full of worry fading into relief at having Ryou back with him.  "Just a few hours.  What happened?  Where have you been?"
Ryou had never been so relieved, not in all of his long life.  He didn't release his grip on Yuusuke, nor did Yuusuke release his on the prince.  "I'll tell you,"  he promised, glancing over to where Honest and Fubuki approached, Fubuki with arms and wings spread wide to embrace him.  At least the touch of this angel wouldn't hurt.  "Let's sit down first.  There's a great deal for me to tell you."
And he had never been happier to have the time to tell it in.
Chaos Valkyria wasn't one to swear, but she considered changing her habits just for this.  In absolute truth, she hadn't expected the other angel to keep the demon prince for long, but she'd expected it to be longer than this!  She'd not even been able to get her plan started properly, since as soon as the demon vanished, the angels and mage started looking for him, instead of being sensible and praising Heaven they were rid of him!  She most certainly would have!  Anyone with sense would have!
This isn't over, she swore.  It might take longer than she'd thought to lure them all into a more well tailored trap but this would give her time to get any unexpected flaws worked out of her plans.  This did offer information, though - the King of Hell himself watched over them, and if she failed in the slightest way, then her fate would be like Iaoth's - not something she would care to experience.  The demon king didn't destroy his opponents.  That wasn't his way at all.
Fallen angels had to come from somewhere, after all.  Once he'd sated his wrath, of course.
Her metallic wings flicked against one another as she rose up into the skies, cloaking herself in concealment, and darted back to her hidden citadel.  She needed to improve the defenses there to the point not even the King of Hell could enter.  Then she needed more ways to deflect suspicion so he'd never even look this way.  Humans would be good for that.  Everyone expected humans to use magic to attain their goals, either angelic or demonic or whatever else they had a talent for. There were others who could be recruited to serve her cause as well – such as the vampire Queen Camula. Bad blood existed between her and the demon prince.
It might also be entertaining to summon a certain phoenix and let him unleash his sacred flames.  Both of them could be very useful for her needs.
All she needed for that was the proper bait.
Or perhaps the right term there was who she needed for the proper bait.
The End
Notes: There's not much I enjoy more than tormenting Ryou. Well, at least in the GX branch of things.
Binding Chains is a Light-attrivute monster. Gyakutenno Megami, Goddess of Reversal, is a Fairy (Angel) type monster, also Light-attribute. I intend to do a lot more with Chaos Valkyria and her plans, too. I have Ideas! (Don’t I always?)

[fanfic] Pledges:  Chapter 1
Series: In The Shadows of the Fae||Story: Pledges Characters: Ryou, Shou, Yuusuke||Ship: Ryou x Yuusuke Chapters: 1-??||Words: 3,259||Total: 3,259 Genre: Romance, Fantasy||Rated: G Prompt: GX Month 2021, day #6, Heartfelt Appeal; GX Rare Pairs Week 2021, day #4, spirits Notes: *dusts off this series* Ok, not what I'd originally thought to do but the idea presented itself, so here we are. For those who have never read Enchantment, Trust, or Morning Routine, this begins three (mortal) years before all of those. Go read them; I'll wait. But you don't really need to in order to understand the basic concept here: an AU where fae and magic exist. Also, this is one of my favorite rareships. They should have fully interacted in canon instead of just one exchanged glance! Summary: He defended the village with all that he had. With his life's blood if need be. Ryou never expected that to be needed. When it is, there is only one way to both have these wounds healed and keep his home safe: he must leave all that he knows behind, forever, and enter a brand new world.
He could still see his reflection.  It didn't look as if it were going to fade away any time soon, but Ryou refused to put any faith into that.  Who knew what could happen?  He raised one hand to his neck, where the bandage still remained after three long weeks.  It didn't feel as if it were healing.  In all honesty, none of his wounds felt as if they were healing.  It wasn't as if it were being slow.  It was as if the healing weren't happening at all.
He turned away from the mirror, poor thing that it was, and limped his way back out.  He didn't like limping.  His feet sometimes stumbled on the uneven rugs, and more than once he'd almost fallen.  Twice he had fallen.  He'd managed to get back up to his feet both times, but after a lifetime of not having to deal with such things, he frankly could do without it.  He was a warrior.  He'd been trained since birth to defend the people of the village.  One day he might even leave to go protect a wider area.  How could he do that if he could barely walk?
No.  That wasn't going to happen.  He would heal.  He would restore his strength and continue to defend the village, and once he could find someone he could trust to protect his home once he left, he would move onward.
Perhaps that was part of the issue.  The healer here wasn't the best of their kind, and Ryou wondered if he'd even realized that these wounds weren't healing.  He did come and check every other day, and every time he swore that they were doing so much better and Ryou would be back on his feet in no time.
I think not.  Ryou headed outside, lips pressed together against the throbbing pain in his neck and the searing agony that wracked him whenever he took a step.  His arm wasn't giving him much trouble today but he knew that wouldn't last.
Outside of the family home was his training area.  He sparred with anyone who would stand against him, which were few and far between as he learned more and became better.  More often he trained by himself.  Right now, that was what he wanted to do.
He picked up his sword and tested the edge.  So far so good.  After that battle, he'd been worried about it.  That last creature - the one that bit him - knocked the blade away as if it were made of balsam wood.  If that creature was what Ryou thought it was, wood might well have done better against it than steel.
Cold, unnaturally strong hands wrenched his sword away and cast it to one side.  Wild hair kept him from seeing their face, but he was fully aware of the sharp fangs as they flashed towards him, gleaming in the moonlight.  Then, buried in his neck in a flash of bright pain, and he could hear the most horrible of sounds, one that echoed in his nightmares for the rest of his life - the sound of sucking.  Already weak from the wounds the creature's slaves had inflicted on him, he'd not been able to fight it off, and fell.
Ryou shook his head, getting rid of the images.  He refused to think too much about that.  He was a warrior - battles won and lost were a part of his life, and he needed to be ready in case that creature and its minions returned.  He wasn't even sure if he'd defeated any of them.  He'd been trained to fight humans, not monsters, and those were most definitely monsters.
Setting his jaw, he started on his first training session, working out carefully and slowly.  Normally he would have picked up speed as he went along, but today he kept himself slow and cautious, with his leg throbbing at him and his neck sending small spikes of pain.  Normally he could have done this for hours.  This time he stopped, out of breath, after a handful of minutes.
"Big brother?"  Shou stood off to the side, where he could watch and not interfere.  He looked worried.  But he'd looked worried about Ryou ever since the night of the battle.  "Are you - are you-"  He couldn't seem to finish the question.  But Ryou could easily guess what he wanted to know.
"I'm fine."  Shou didn't need to know.  No one did.  This was a temporary setback and nothing more.  For now, he wiped the sweat off of his face and sheathed his sword.  "Have you finished your studies?"
Shou was technically supposed to be the next defender of the village.  If he'd been taller and stronger, it wouldn't have been a problem. But as it was, Shou wasn't really suited to be a defender of anything.  So he studied from what books he could, and Ryou had given him a few lessons that could be useful in self-defense.  Shou wasn't very good at it, but he tried. He tried so very hard.
Ryou didn't quite hear what Shou said in response.  He presumed it was a 'yes' but his attention strayed instead to Shou's neck.  It felt - seemed - there was - he shoved the thoughts away as hard as he could, setting his jaw.
"Stay in town today,"  Ryou ordered, ignoring whatever else Shou had to say.  He did his best to imitate his usual strong stride as he turned and headed into the woods, wanting to be as far away from people as he could manage right now.
Moments like this happened far too often since that night.  He paid little enough attention to other people before that, but since then he'd somehow begun to pay even less, being wrapped up in his failure to heal and the fact he'd been hurt so badly in the first place.  It shouldn't have happened.  He'd never encountered enemies like that.  Monsters couldn't be that different to fight.
And yet - yet it happened anyway. He'd stood up against them and ended up swatted down as if he were little more than a minor nuisance.
They didn't hurt anyone else.  That's what I'm for.  That's my purpose.  So he needed a successor, someone who could do better than he had if those creatures returned. None of the others in town were capable of it, though.  They were farmers, bakers, grocers, butchers, millers, and more.  They weren't warriors.  That had always been his family line's duty.  Now it looked like that would end with him.
He could feel Shou's eyes on him until he passed into the woods and out of sight.  He didn't relax, though.  If anything, he found himself even tenser.  There was all this wood around him.  It didn't feel right.
Ryou walked until he was in the deepest part of the wood, where the branches overhead wove together to cast it all into darkness.  By the time he got there, every breath he took drained a bit more of his energy out of him.  So now he settled against a rock, cool to the touch, and a good place to rest.  He wasn't even sure of what he was doing out here, except that he didn't want to be around humans.
He wasn't sure of how long he remained there.  But outside, the sun slipped down to the horizon, and as the shadows deepened, a slowly growing sense told him that he wasn't alone.  He glanced around carefully, fingers tightening.  He'd brought his sword along, but if this were who he thought then it would do no good.  But he started to draw regardless.  Whatever it was wouldn't have him without a fight.
"There's no need for that."
Ryou supposed the voice might be male, but it had an odd quality that couldn't be defined by gender.  His attention flicked back and forth, but he didn't see anyone.  He refused to move an inch.
"What do you want?"  He would finish that fight if he could.
Arms came from behind him, easily pinning him in a grip that he could not have broken even if he were at full strength.  Someone stood, taller and broader and stronger than he was, cold hands closing like steel shackles on his wrists.  Ryou jerked his head around, trying to get a look, and could only catch a glimpse of pale blue hair and bright red eyes.  Then one of those hands fastened onto his head and bent it down, exposing his neck.
"You're so very fragile,"  a calm voice spoke next to his ear.  Ryou strained with all of his strength but he might have had better luck shattering a stone.  "But all humans are.  It's not your fault."
"Release me!"  Ryou demanded, or tried to.  He dragged in as much air as he could, but it wasn't easy.  The painful grip on him didn't ease up at all.  He'd never felt anything like this before, and he didn't enjoy it in the slightest.
"No, I don't think so.  Not yet."  A sharp something - a nail, he realized, slid down his neck.  "I tasted your blood once already.  It formed a bond between us.  But I want something more than a servant."
Ryou had heard more than enough tales about vampires to guess where this was going.  He shook his head, or made the attempt.  "I want nothing to do with you."  All he'd ever wanted was to excel at protecting his town, to be the very best of the defenders that his family had produced.
"That isn't an option."  Again that nailed finger brushed down his neck, finding the pulse of the vein and resting there.  "But you're so human right now."
"I am human,"  Ryou refused to even think about anything else.  He wondered if he could get hold of a stake and ram it into the vampire's heart.  Wasn't it too early for vampires to be around?  The sun had been up, but they were so deep in the woods, did that help?  His mind raced in circles as it never had before - being in the grip of a vampire did nothing to help him relax.
"You are for now.  But I think I'm going to change that."  The vampire chuckled. "But I shouldn't be rude.  I am Aleron."
As far as Ryou cared, that sounded like something that someone would name themselves - something very pretentious and annoying.  The vampire's real name was probably something boring and generic.  Not that he actually cared what the name was, except for what to carve on whatever memorial was left for a pile of ashes.
Aleron's grip tightened just a fraction.  "Now, tell me what your name is."
Ryou sealed his lips together as hard as he could.  He'd heard about name magic, about how giving one's name to a creature of magic could make one their slave forever.  It was bad enough this creature threatened to turn him into a vampire.  He'd not give them his name, too.
Again the grip tightened and this time he could hear bones in his wrist grinding together.  He hissed between his teeth and still fought to keep the name behind his lips.
"Oh, you're a stubborn one."  Something moved just on the edge of Ryou's sight.  It was far too close to him, and he thought he caught a vague whiff of something leather-ish.  "I'm going to enjoy this."  Again the grip tightened and Ryou knew if he didn't get free of the grip he would lose the use of his hand - perhaps forever.  HE had enough problems getting his current injuries taken care of.
He drew in another breath, tensed himself the best he could, and slammed his elbow backwards as hard as he could.  Even in his current state of injury, that would have hurt a normal human being.  But Aleron wasn't a normal human.  He didn't flinch at the blow at all.
"Your name."  He demanded.  Ryou determinedly shook his head, grinding his teeth together.  If it cost him the use of his arm, then so be it.  He'd not surrender his name, nor anything else.
Aleron's breath brushed against his ear.  Cold, far too cold, with a faint tinge of copper to it - blood.  Ryou refused to back down.  He could outlast this monster.  Nothing he did could make Ryou reveal his name or anything else.
"If you refuse to give me your name, then I can gain it elsewhere.  You are well known in your town, are you not?"  Aleron chuckled, but there wasn't a hint of warmth there at all.  "Who is that little one you were with earlier?  You share a coloring and a scent.  Is he kin of yours?  Would he taste as sweet as you?"
Ryou paled.  The very last thing he wanted was for a monster like this to approach Shou. He snarled as fiercely as he could, "Leave him alone!"
"Tell me your name and I might think about it."  Sharp teeth nipped at his ear.  "Or perhaps I won't.  You won't know until you tell me what I want to know."
Ryou drew in a sharp, unpleasant breath.  He closed his eyes, hating this with every scrap of his heart.  He didn't want to do this, but he would have given his name over a thousand times to keep his brother safe.
"My name is -" Before he finished the sentence, a soft wind tossed through the trees, and Ryou had the sudden, strong sensation that someone came closer. It wasn't anyone he could see, but he knew they were there, regardless.  He tried to find where they were, but nothing showed up at all.
He wasn't the only one who sensed this, though.  Aleron swore softly and stepped back, releasing Ryou from his grip.
"What do you want?"  He called out to whatever it was that lurked in the area.  "I've already claimed him as mine.  You can't have him."
If there was an answer, Ryou didn't hear it.  But Aleron did, and he growled something in a language that Ryou didn't understand. He had the gist of it, though - the vampire didn't like being interrupted.  Before Ryou could move away, the vampire gripped his shoulder and yanked him closer.  "Don't forget.  You are mine - and becoming more so.  I'll see you again."
Cold lips brushed against his neck for a few heartbeats, then the grip on his shoulder was no more.  Ryou tried to keep himself on his feet, but all of his strength ran out.  He slumped against the rock and dragged in the deepest breath he could, over and over again, until he found himself more capable of standing.
As long as that took, he thought that there wouldn't be anyone else there when he finally stood up.  But someone did stand in the shadows.  They weren't close enough for him to see who they were, but he knew they were watching him.
it wasn't Aleron.  He might not have ever seen the vampire's face, but an aura of chill and death came from the vampire.  The sense he got from this person was different.  They were alive - just - just not human.
"Who are you?"  He grated the words out, settling back onto the rock.  He didn't want to leave until he knew who this person was.  "What are you doing here?"
At first there wasn't an answer.  Then a quiet voice came drifting out of the woods.  "Don't tell him your name.  If you do that, then I can't save you from him.  And he will continue to try to get it.  He wants you."
Ryou snorted faintly.  "I noticed."  He raised one hand to his neck.  "I need to get rid of him."
"You are human."  The soft voice replied, with the faintest hint of reproval.  "He might not control you as he would if you were his thrall or his spawn, but you cannot overpower him in the condition you are in. And no human healing can repair the wounds you've suffered."
Ryou shook his head.  "I guessed that as well."  He regarded the half-invisible form in the dark.  "What can?"  He suspected this person knew.  Might even be able to do it himself, but probably not for a price.  Exactly what price he would want was anyone's guess.
He couldn't tell what expression the other made.  But at least he got an answer. "That I don't know.  But I can ask.  I - know someone who might be able to help you."  For a few moments he said nothing more.  When he continued, Ryou expected what he heard.  "But there will be a price for it.  It might not be one that you want to pay."
"I'll decide that when I know what the price is,"  Ryou replied.  He started to take a step over, and the shadowy figure stepped back.  "I don't think I could hurt you even if I wanted to."
A tiny amused chuckle sounded.  "That's not it.  It's not wise for us to touch right now.  Return to your home.  I will watch over you.  When I know what the price is - and if my King can help you at all - I will find you."
Ryou nodded.  He suspected whoever this person's "king" was, they weren't human.  Mortal kings didn't usually have servants who looked like that.  If he peered close he could catch a glimpse of pale violet eyes watching him.  He breathed in a little more, then started on his way, his steps careful and measured.
Most of the aches and pains had eased to some degree.  He wasn't sure if that were because of the encounter with Aleron or with this stranger, who ghosted along out of reach but never out of sight.  He didn't think he'd somehow been healed, but he did feel better.  At least for now.
"Speak to no one of what's happened,"  the stranger murmured as Ryou reached the edge of the forest.  "It's better if none of them know."
Ryou wasn't going to argue that one.  He wasn't even sure if he could tell them in a way that they'd understand.  Did they understand how badly he'd been hurt and how long the chances of his recovering without help were?  Did he even understand that?  Probably not.  Better that none of them knew.
He started out of the forest.  The shadow person didn't follow him this time.  Ryou glanced behind once, and saw nothing that wouldn't be in any forest.  If the stranger remained, he was out of Ryou's sight.
If he'd ever been in Ryou's sight.  Had any of that happened?  The farther he found himself from the forest, the more he had to wonder.  He knew that he'd fought a vampire and it had wounded him, but why would it seek him out again?  What sort of strange creature would be strong enough to keep it away from him?  Was it all a dream he'd dreamed?  Had he fallen asleep in the woods and dreamed it all?
That he couldn't be certain of.  All he knew for certain was that he didn't hurt too much right now, and he took advantage of that to enjoy a pleasant meal with his family and fall into the deepest sleep he'd had since the night of the attack on the village.
And through the entire night, pale violet eyes watched him quietly from the shadows.
To Be Continued
Notes: I’m going to update this again later in the week, for GX Rare Pairs Week. Probably on Thursday. We’ll see how it works after that. But I’ve planned this for a while, and I have a fondness for Ryou and vampires – though that’s not what Yuusuke is. Ready to see where this goes withi me?

Yuusuke flitted through the shadows, keeping an eye out for the rogue vampire.  He didn't expect the creature to strike at him but it wouldn't at all be the first time that Aleron had struck out at someone when he'd been interrupted in his prey.
But he wasn't going to have this prey.  Yuusuke would see to it personally.  He might need some assistance, but that was why he wanted to return to the palace and have a chat with the Prince.  It shouldn't be that difficult to get matters sorted.  At least he hoped so.  The Prince could be capricious at times.
I hope he listens to me.  It was risky to leave the human like this, given not only Aleron's presence but the fact of the human's wounds.  They needed magical assistance to heal properly - and he'd never get that in the human realm, not enough to truly recover from the attack.
But this human was stubborn, more so than any Yuusuke had seen in all of his centuries of watching humans from the shadows.  He might push himself too hard, or presume that he could take on Aleron with a simple wooden stake, even after what had happened today.  Better to get what assistance he could from the prince before that happened.
Stepping into shadows was a skill that few spirits possessed.  Aside from the spirits of shadows, the only one he knew who could do this was the Prince himself.  Of courses, Yuusuke was a spirit of shadow himself.  Shadows were what made him up, even if he wore a vague human look.  Spirits looked like whatever they wanted to look like and he'd always found humans interesting.
Perhaps one human in particular...
But now he flitted into the shadow and stepped out on the other side, right into the Prince's palace.  The guards noticed him, of course.  Here in the Prince's palace, no one could go unseen.  Even those who were naturally invisible could be seen here.  They didn't visit without his permission.
Yuusuke greeted the guards with a nod of his head, then headed for the throne room.  The Prince didn't spend much time there, but it was the best place to look for him.
"Spirit of shadows, Fujiwara Yuusuke!"  The herald announced as Yuusuke stepped to the door.  That meant the Prince was there, and Yuusuke bowed respectfully as he approached the throne.  He tried hard not to be enthralled by the decor, but it wasn't easy.  Shimmering dark gray marble extended under his feet, covered in well-woven carpets, with tapestries of a similar fine making hanging over the pale gray marble walls.  There were chasings of gold and silver worked into the walls as well, with niches bearing fine stonework or graceful vases set along the throne room.  Wide windows were set there as well, but the clear sunlight of the fae lands did not affect a shadow spirit, save to cast the shadows they traveled through.
The Fae Prince wiggled one hand casually in greeting, lounging back on the throne, legs draped over the arms, his consort standing to one side, watching in amusement as the Prince tossed a ball of shadows up and down.  He glanced to Yuusuke as the spirit entered.
"Did you need something or are you here for a visit?"
A fair question.  Yuusuke didn't come to the palace often, let along ask for requests.  But he shook his head.  "I came for a reason.  I have a - request, Your Highness."
Prince Juudai rolled so he sat properly in his throne now, golden eyes gleaming in fascination.  "Oh?  Really?"  His teeth seemed a little sharp - Yuusuke knew that meant he was interested.  It wasn't as if Yuusuke asked for a lot.  He'd never felt a need.
"You know the human village of Dustborn?  It's very close to one of the passageways between our worlds."
Slowly Juudai nodded, eyes glinting even more.  "I'm aware of it.  It suffered a vampire attack recently."
Oh, good.  He wouldn't have to do a lot of explaining.  "Their defender was gravely wounded in that attack, and Aleron wishes to do more.  He wants this human to be either his consort, his servant, or to turn him - or possibly all of those.  With Aleron it's hard to tell."
Juudai's lips twitched.  "You're right.  And I assume the human isn't interested?"
"I don't believe so.  He refused to give Aleron his name even under duress."  It hadn't been as rough as Aleron could have made it but the human did his best, only beginning to cave when a loved one was threatened.  Yuusuke liked that sort of strength.  He always had.  "But Aleron is also threatening other people in the village if he doesn't get what he wants.
Juudai leaned forward, resting his chin on one hand, focusing all of his terrifying attention on Yuusuke.  If Yuusuke hadn't wanted this so much, he would have made his excuses and left.  But he stayed firm.  "And you don't want this particular human turned, do you?"
Normally those of the fae persuasion didn't concern themselves with humans, vampires, or anything in the mortal world, except as mild amusement at times.  They had their own world to live in, and it touched on the human world only in certain points and at certain times.
Perhaps it wasn't surprising that one of those times drew nearer and nearer.
"He's interesting to me,"  Yuusuke admitted.  "It isn't often that we see someone stand up to a vampire, especially one of Aleron's strength."
Slowly Juudai nodded.  "So what exactly is it that you want from me?"
"He needs healing, of a kind that can't be found in the human world.  Heather could save him, I'm certain."  Without her healing gifts, it wasn't likely that the human would even see the coming equinox.  "But I know the price."
"Does he?"  Thai came from Yubel, Juudai's beloved consort.  They didn't often interject into such moments, but he presumed they saw fit now.
"Not yet.  I told him that I would let him know once I knew."  He knew part of the price but the whole thing could be something else altogether.  That would be for Heather and for Juudai to decide.
Juudai cocked his head.  "And you think that he would agree to this once he knows?"
Yuusuke fidgeted just the tiniest bit.  "I don't know.  But I think - he should have the option."
Juudai and Yubel exchanged the briefest of glances.  Not that they needed to; Yuusuke knew very well that they could communicate in ways that didn't involve words or looks.  They were one soul, it had been said.  Exactly what that meant, Yuusuke had never been certain.  No one was, as far as he knew.  But he did envy them that closeness.
"If he accepts our healing and our help, then he will have to stay here.  Forever,"  Juudai said at last.  "He can serve me or he can be with you, whichever is more to his preference. Aleron won't be allowed to harm him here."
But Aleron could come there.  Vampires walked the line between day and dark, between life and death, human and fae.  They could and did exist in both worlds.  It wouldn't defeat him but it could restrain him.  For now.  And vampires could be very persuasive
This wouldn't be the end.  Getting the human here would only be the beginning.
"I will inform him and let him make his decision,"  Yuusuke declared. "If he chooses to come here, I'll bring him as soon as I can."
"Make certain he doesn't tell anyone where he's going.  And if he wants to bargain on his own behalf, call me."  Juudai waved one hand in dismissal and Yuusuke bowed again before he stepped back, aiming for the shadows once more.  This time when he exited from them, he stood in his own little citadel.  It wasn't much, not nearly as large as Juudai's castle, but he was fond of it.
There were no servants here.  He wondered if he might have to hire some, if the human came to live here.
He won't.  Yuusuke refused to let himself think that.  He'll want to stay with Juudai and remain a warrior.  He guarded the darkest regions of the fae realm, where fierce monsters roamed freely.  Yuusuke kept them in check with his magic.  Not that he couldn't have used a strong warrior here.  It was something to consider, however, for the future.
Slowly he made his way to his own personal quarters, where a flawless black mirror awaited him.  He touched it with the clawed tips of his fingers, and from that touch ripples spread outward.  As the ripples cleared, he could see the human reflected in the mirror.
Will you give me your name?  Yuusuke wondered.  He could only observe here; he couldn't hear what was going on.  This was how he'd known what the vampire was up to.  He'd seen the combat, seen the aftermath, and seen the other corner the human in the darkness of the forest.  He could go anywhere there were shadows in the blink of an eye, if need be.
But for now, he only watched quietly, ensuring that the human rested as peacefully as he could and that Aleron wasn't anywhere around.  So far, all was well.
Ryou knew that his parents worried about him.  There wasn't much that he could do about it.  He'd done what he could to hide the extent of his injuries and their lack of healing, but even they eventually noticed that he wasn't as quick or as strong as he had been, and that he made regular visits to the healer that he hadn't before.
Fingers tapped on his door and he held back a long-suffering sigh.  He'd hoped for the chance to rest.  He'd not really been that hungry once he returned home and decided to skip dinner in favor of a larger breakfast come morning.  But clearly his parents didn't feel the same.
The door swung open and his mother peered in.  "Ryou?  Are you all right?"
"I'm fine,"  Ryou lied.  They couldn't do anything to help him.  So they didn't need to know his problems.  Even more so, they didn't need to know about the vampire that seemed so eager for him.
Marufuji Airi crossed her arms over her chest and glared down at him.  "And you expect me to believe that?  You're not as clever as you think you are, my dear son."  She took two strides towards him, grabbed hold of his head, and bent his neck to one side.  "I saw what attacked the other night.  And what attacked you."
Ryou jerked away.  This wasn't what he'd had in mind.  "I told you.  I'm fine."
"You've been bitten by a vampire.  You haven't turned yet, though."  Airi continued to stare down at him as she would have if he disobeyed her as a child.  He'd done that very few times, but remembered her stern regard no matter what.
"I'm not going to.  It wasn't that bad."  Ryou shook his head.  "I just need to recover from the blood loss."  That, perhaps, would be a plausible enough excuse.
Airi made a noise that more or less conveyed she didn't believe a word he'd said.  She nudged at him.  "I've made you some tea.  But you should get out of bed."
Ryou debated getting out of bed versus having some of his mother's tea.  She had always made the best teas, and he thought at times that they were far more magical than she would have let on.  Practicing magic wasn't exactly illegal in Dustborn, but it was very looked down upon as well.  If one needed magic, then one packed one's bags and headed to one of the larger towns or cities and had whatever was necessary done discreetly there.
Airi regarded him for a few more heartbeats.  "You can go back to bed after you've had the tea.  I made it to help you rest and get better."
Ryou breathed a long sigh and pushed himself to his feet.  He would have far rather stayed where he was, but the tease of that tea and the fact he knew his mother wouldn't leave him alone until he did get up got him moving.  He could get the tea down and then go right back to getting a proper rest.
He carefully moved himself into the parlor of the family mansion, where his father and Shou waited, each of them with a hot cup of tea in front of them.  Airi settled down in her own chair as he got into his and nodded towards them.
"I told you I could get him in here,"  she declared firmly.  "And I was right, Hotaka.  He was bitten by a vampire."
Shou yelped, eyes widening as he stared.  "You really were?  Are you - are you -"
Ryou snorted softly as he picked up his cup.  "I was.  But I am not turning."  He never would do anything that would hurt his family.  He would power his way through this, no matter what.  As he always had, no matter what.
Hotaka nodded slightly, taking a sip of his own tea. "Vampire bites are at their most dangerous when they're untreated. But you've taken care of it, haven't you?"
Ryou nodded.  "I cleaned it, disinfected it, and have been changing the dressing on it."  He wasn't lying.
Airi leaned over to take a good long look at his neck.  Ryou bent his head so she could see it better, though he didn't think there was anything else for her to see. Then, without warning, her hand dropped down to touch onto his wrist, tugging his sleeve back to expose the bruised circle there.
"What happened there?"  Hotaka set his cup down firmly and glowered at his eldest.  "Those bruises are fingers."  He tensed, and Ryou was fully aware that his father had done duty before him defending the village.  He hadn't let his training slip since passing the position to Ryou, either.
"It's nothing."  Ryou shook his head.  "Nothing that you need to worry about."
He wanted to insist farther, but both of them ignored him, Airi tracing his wrist with one finger.  Her eyes narrowed. "Someone nearly broke your wrist.  Who?  Why?"
Ryou's first instinct was to wave it off; tell them that it was nothing, a mere accident, and nothing that he couldn't handle himself.  His second was to admit to the existence of the vampire and that it still desired him, for whatever reasons.
But a third thought intruded itself - That dark spirit.  He told me not to say anything.  But he might be able to help me.  Ryou had a sudden strong conviction that if he did mention the being, then he wouldn't get that help.  So for now, he shook his head.
"I can't tell you."  In its own way, that was indeed the truth.  He'd rather not give up the one slim hope - if it even was a hope  -that he could be healed.  "I would if I could but - I can't."  He considered carefully, then continued.  "But I am safe."  As much as he could be.
Airi and Hotaka both stared at him.  They didn't believe him; he could see that in their eyes.  But he quietly drank his tea and refused to answer any further.  Shou stared in shock, his eyes going from Ryou's wrist to his neck and back again, incapable of saying anything else.  When Ryou finished his tea, he found himself feeling at least a little better.  He nodded his thanks to his mother, then rose up and headed back to his quiet room, thinking perhaps that he would get some rest now.
Aleron's castle stirred up foreboding feelings in anyone unlucky enough to gaze upon it.  Set halfway up a mountain peak, with towers hidden in the shadows cast by the mountain, surrounded on three sides by a cascading waterfall, there was a certain haunting beauty to the place, increased by the elegant decadence inside.  Thick black carpets and tapestries, when they weren't blood-red, were scattered all over, along with paintings crafted by artists long since dead and buried - or ashed in some cases.
In the tallest tower of them all, Aleron stalked back and forth.  Fae!  Shadow spirits!  Aleron all but bit the words even though he didn't speak them.  Speaking of the fae would be likely to draw their attention and he already had too much of that world's attention, if the shadow spirit was any evidence.
He raged over and over, his fury impotent and fierce all at the same time, snarling under his unnecessary breath. How dare that shadow spirit deprive him of what was his?  He wanted that human, wanted in ways that he did not have words for, and would not halt until he had him, his blood drained, his body bent to Aleron's will, his will broken and shattered and Aleron's to remake as he pleased. It had been a long time since he'd done that to anyone and once he'd chosen a target, he didn't stop until said target belonged to him.
Never before had he been thwarted.  It wasn't going to happen now.  From the first moment that he'd tasted that human's blood, he'd known that this young man was descended from his most hated enemy.
His wing fluttered as he stalked.  He would have that human - no matter what.  He'd waited too long for his revenge.
If only he hadn't needed to heal from his first strike on this village.  The seventy years had been little more than an eye-blink to him but so much had happened for the humans. He didn't think anyone was left there who still remembered him and the fact he'd once ruled over the village - not just that one but several in that area.  Twelve entire villages, four towns, and two of the largest cities had been his.
They still would have been if Shinoda Masuyo hadn't come within a hair's breadth of striking him down forever.  She probably thought - or had thought  - that she actually had.  She came far closer than Aleron wanted to admit even to himself.  But his sleep had revived him, then plenty of blood to get him back in fighting condition.  He'd chosen to strike at this village, Shinoda's home, to rebuild his old realm.  He would take the others in due course but here he would establish himself first.
He paced back and forth, fists clenching and unclenching, wing flapping.  Once he'd had two wings.  But because of Shinoda...
Aleron stopped.  He frowned thoughtfully.  His resources against the human he wanted were limited now that the shadow spirit and the fae were involved.  But they weren't gone completely.  Not yet.
He whirled and stalked towards his library.  It had been quite some time since he'd tried anything in there. He would have to start small and work his way up to what he wanted. But he would succeed.
And perhaps in his library, he could find a way to dispose of a spirit of shadow as well.

[fanfic] Wings of the Soul:  Chapter 1
Ryou didn’t believe in unwarranted pride. His was very warranted. He could - and did - defeat virtually anyone who stood against him in a duel.  His grades were the very highest in the school.  There wasn't anything that he couldn't do.
Except one thing - one thing that continued to nag him, no matter how hard he tried otherwise.  There was a reason he wore a cloak, no matter the weather, no matter what else.  Coats might have kept him warmer, but he didn't care about warmth.  That wasn't the cloak's purpose.
He could feel them moving underneath the cloak.  They lived, just as much as any of his other limbs did, but he hated to even look at them.  Sometimes he would slip the cloak off and spread them, just for a few scraps of exercise.  Nothing he tried could change them in any way.
But now he stood before the mirror, slid the cloak off, and turned slightly.  There were his wings, bent and with only a few broken feathers, incapable of flight, barely reaching to his waist, unlike true and proper wings that would have spread out to cover most of the room on someone who wasn't him.
He stretched them out carefully, reaching one hand to touch the arc of the closest one.
They're so cold.  He hated how they felt.  They should have been warm, and yet they weren't.  Warmth would have meant blood flowing through them - or it should have.  He'd had them tested once they began to shrivel.  All the doctors said his wings still lived, and he hadn't contracted any diseases.  Whatever had caused them to become like this, it had nothing to do with his usual perfect health.
Sometimes he wondered if he should have kept a diary, to be sure of when it even started.  Perhaps he could have noted what had changed.  There had to have been something.  Perhaps he'd eaten the wrong food or done something that affected his wings?  He truly couldn't remember.
Perhaps my - soulmate?  It wasn't impossible that he'd met his soulmate and something had happened to said soulmate.  Sprouting wings was one of those signs of having met one's soulmate.  But surely that was something that he would have remembered?  He'd considered it more than once.  There wasn't anything else he knew of that could enable him to sprout wings.  But he'd asked those who might know, and not even Fubuki, before he vanished, knew anything about this.
Though truth to be told, Fubuki had looked a little confused when he'd asked.  Not as if he were hiding something, but as if he didn't remember and thought that he should.  It hadn't been long after Ryou asked him that he'd ended up vanishing.
Ryou refused to think of himself as alone.  Of course he stood at the very top of Duel Academia, but that didn't mean he was alone.  He had one more year at Duel Academia, and then he would enter the Pro Leagues.  He'd not yet settled on who his first sponsor would be.  But he had time to settle on it.
Assured that nothing had changed with his wings - unfortunately - he picked up his cloak and settled it back over his shoulders and back.  It matched the rest of his uniform, mostly white with edges of blue.  Principal Samejima issued it for him once everyone became aware of the state of his wings.
Once tucked back under there, he headed out of his room.  Today was the day that the new applicants would arrive for their practical exams, and he looked forward to seeing what their duels would be like.  He knew Shou would be there, and a small part of him hoped that his younger brother didn't make it.  Shou still had so much to learn.  It might be better if he did it somewhere other than Duel Academia.
Asuka would start this year as well.  Perhaps that would mean they stood a better chance to find Fubuki.  Ryou looked forward to that.  He almost missed the occasional teases about how high he would fly once his soulmate returned - Fubuki had always insisted that Ryou had wings because of his missing soulmate and when that soulmate returned, then Ryou's wings would fill out once again.  Ryou wasn't ready to believe that, but he would much prefer Fubuki there than not being there.
Even more than he'd prefer having the wings of his soul back.

[fanfic] Wings of the Soul:  Chapter 2 [end]
Yuusuke kept his wings folded as tightly against his back as he could.  He didn't like to look at them or think about them.  As far as he was concerned, they were a sign of everything that he'd given up, and for what?  For nothing at all - because he'd been wrong about it all.  He'd thought that he'd be forgotten and that no one would want him back, not even Ryou.
Not even his soulmate.
But the moment their eyes met again at the graduation party, both of them froze in their tracks.  Ryou, still seated in that wheelchair, slowly leaned forward to shed the black cape that covered his back, and spread out his wings.  When he first did, they'd been nothing but a shriveled, pathetic mess.  Then they filled out, becoming stronger, wider, and fuller.  Sleek black feathers grew in, and from the expression on Ryou's face, it wasn't a lovely feeling.
He knew very well it wasn't.  Because his own wings did the same thing.  His feathers were now a deeper shade of green than they'd been before, not quite matching his hair so well, but far better than they'd been.  He'd stared at Ryou, words choking in his throat, and yet not a single word had come out.
He'd left.  He wanted so much to say something, to say how sorry he was for everything, but not a single word had formed.  Perhaps he'd figure out a way at some point in the future.  But just then, he said nothing at all.
What would I even tell him?  He could have at least had faith that Ryou wouldn't forget him.  They'd been aware of their soulmate nature since the moment they'd met.  But he'd not done so.  He wasn't going to blame Darkness for that - it was all on him.
Even if Ryou hadn't forgotten him willingly before, he would clearly do so now.  Being soulmates didn't mean endless true love.  Soulmate required as much work as non-soulmate relationships.  Some people even thought they needed more.  After what Yuusuke did, he suspected Ryou would happily choose anyone else, soulmate or not.  He'd forced Ryou to live with broken wings for five years.  Being left alone like this was what he deserved.
But he was staying at Duel Academia until he could get his education properly finished and graduate himself.  Ryou also stayed there, for health reasons.  Yuusuke wanted more details on that, and told himself he didn't deserve them.  That in no way stopped him from wanting them.
So he would have to figure out a way for them both to stay there without him running into Ryou.  Surely it couldn't be that difficult.  Ryou spent most of his time in the medical area.  Yuusuke would attend classes once the new year began. He could spend his spare time in the library or even in the forest or on the beach.  Ryou wasn't one for either of the last two, though the library might give a risk of them crossing paths.
Though, what would make this even more difficult would be Fubuki.  Fubuki would insist on them meeting to talk matters out.  He'd always supported their relationship.  Back when they'd first met and their wings developed, he'd actually given a cheer!  Some things simply did not change.  But he would encourage them to talk, no matter what.  Even if neither one of them wanted to.
But he would figure something out.  Even if he just had to explain to Fubuki that he and Ryou needed to manage this on their own - by which he meant never speaking to Ryou about it at all.  Ryou had his own issues now anyway.  He didn't need someone like Yuusuke getting in his way and bringing him down.
Not that he didn't look fantastic in that black outfit.  The first time Yuusuke saw it it, when he'd lured Ryou into the shadows at Darkness's desire, he'd not quite believed how good the other man looked.  Most of his emotions then had been blunted thanks to Darkness's effect on him.  But seeing Ryou like that - seeing Ryou with his wings so battered and broken, the illustrious Kaiser reduced to bed rest and barely even capable of dueling - for the first time in five years he'd felt something.  He still wasn't sure what to call it.
Maybe it was just guilt.  Guilt for all that he'd done.  Guilt he couldn't get rid of.   At least not yet.
The End

[fanfic] Secrets of Touch
Yuusuke wasn’t used to touching people anymore. He’d gone nearly five years without even seeing another person and the idea of warm human flesh against his own was something that he had to get used to all over again.
Fubuki hadn’t fully realized that yet and kept dropping on him when Yuusuke didn’t expect it. Which wasn’t bad, it certainly helped him get used to the feeling of flesh on him.
But some days were better than others, and Yuusuke praised the day when Fubuki was spending his time with Asuka, and he could go somewhere without having to worry about Fubuki falling from the ceiling or an overhanging tree branch.
He settled himself on a bench in a park he didn’t know the name of, letting himself rest. The sun touched warmly against his back and shoulders and he drank the warmth and the light both in, eyes closed so he could enjoy it all the more.
“Master,” Honest murmured in his ear, “someone is coming. I think it’s Marufuji-san.”
Yuusuke opened his eyes at once. He’d seen Ryou a few times since his return but they’d never had a chance to sit down and talk.
And oh, did they need to. The right time just hadn’t turned up yet.
Perhaps this would be it.
Indeed, it was Ryou, but it didn’t look as if he’d even realized that Yuusuke was there, let alone that the park was there. He walked along, apparently comfortable in the heat even with his black leather - and Yuusuke considered letting him go on by.
But he couldn’t do it. He’d gone too long without talking to someone who he could trust not to touch him without permission first.
“Ryou?”
He knew most people never used Ryou’s given name. Fubuki did on occasion, as did Asuka, and – of all people – Edo Phoenix. Given what he’d heard about how Edo and Ryou first met, he could not help but be surprised that Edo had permission for that.
Or maybe he didn’t and Ryou just didn’t care enough to correct him.
Either way, Ryou stopped and glanced toward him, a bit dismissive at first, until he saw who’d called for him. Then he headed over with a slightly more brisk step than before.
“Yuusuke,” he murmured, having long had permission to use Yuusuke’s own give name. It sounded fair on his lips as well, a sound that Yuusuke hadn’t heard in far too long.
Really, doing anything at all with Ryou was something that he hadn’t done in too long. They hadn’t even had a duel since Yuusuke returned, and he wanted to test their skills against one another.
They hadn’t dueled when he’d come as Darkness’s Messenger. They hadn’t needed to.
Ryou crossed into the park, the faintest tinge of a smile on his lips.
“I didn’t expect to find you here,” he said. “I thought you were still staying at Duel Academia.”
“I’ll probably go back there later,” Yuusuke admitted. “But I wanted to stretch out a little.” They were in between school years at the moment, but for those few people who stayed at the school year round – and there were not many of them – the boat was always available.
Ryou nodded, settling down on the bench as Yuusuke returned to where he’d been sitting. “How have you been?”
“Well enough,” Yuusuke said with a faint shrug of his shoulders. “Days like this make it better.” He cast a glance up to the clear blue sky then back to Ryou, a question stirred by what he’d seen before. “Aren’t you hot in that?”
Ryou glanced down at his own black leather outfit and then back up to Yuusuke. “I hadn’t thought about it. I’m used to it.”
“You could take the jacket off?” Yuusuke suggested. He didn’t want Ryou getting overheated and passing out. Surely he’d gone through worse things in his life, but Yuusuke found he didn’t care. He did care about Ryou and his health.
Though in fair truth, he didn’t think that Ryou would do it. Hell Kaiser was never without his jacket, after all.
But after a moment or two of consideration, Ryou wriggled himself out of the jacket and set it on the back of the bench. Underneath he wore a somewhat lighter shirt that looked much more comfortable in Yuusuke’s opinion.
He looked much less forbidding like that as well. Yuusuke hadn’t ever been scared of him – why would he be? - but people could probably pass him in the streets and not feel an urge to step to the other side of the road.
“There’s a vendor over there who has cold drinks,” Yuusuke offered after a few quiet minutes. “Would you like one?” He paused to frame the next part carefully. “My treat.”
“Thank you.” Ryou’s smile was a gentle thing, so rare even in the days when they’d known each other better, and it struck Yuusuke in the deepest parts of his heart.
Ryou’s presence was unmistakable, even without his jacket and without words. The two of them walked over to the vendor and not for a moment did Yuusuke forget that he was there. Forgetting wasn’t quite the problem it had been before, but there were still times that someone who didn’t speak would slip out of his mind. That didn’t happen with Ryou. Ryou was just there, a darkness that he didn’t fear, that he thought he could learn to treasure.
They didn’t touch. He’d almost expected it to happen at some point, some moment when they weren’t fully paying attention to where their hands went. But it didn’t happen. Yuusuke couldn’t yet make up his mind on if he were disappointed by that or not. He didn’t think he should be. Touch was still a strange thing to him, even as he became more familiar with it.
Touch would come another day, he made up his mind. It would give him – perhaps both of them – something to look forward to.
The End
Notes: They might not be my full on OTP (Yubel/Juudai) but I do love this 'ship so very much.

[fanfic] In Memory
"When's he going to disappear?"
"Are you sure he didn't do anything to them?  I mean, it's - not impossible, is it?"
"They were his friends, weren't they?"
"That doesn't mean anything.  They're both gone. And he's still here."
"I heard they found blood where Fujiwara was."
Ryou turned a page in his book and did his very best to ignore all the whispers that raced around the room.  He knew he wasn't doing a very good job of it.  But he was quite skilled at focusing on what was in front of him so that gave him something else to think about.  He'd already hashed over everything to do with the disappearance of his two best friends as much as he could.  He and Principal Samejima had carefully reviewed everything to do with Fubuki's recent vanishing and came to the conclusion that there wasn't anything that Ryou could have done differently.
So now he was alone.  There were other students who he associated with on occasion, but none of them were even close to being as close to him as Fubuki and Yuusuke were - had been.
Alone.  He tried not to think too hard about that or about the other whispers that flew around the room.  No one wanted to get his attention. They just talked about it where he could hear it.  He ignored it all, or at least didn't respond to it.  What else could he do?  He knew he hadn't had anything to do with either of their disappearances. Yuusuke got too involved in whatever strange studies he'd been in.  Fubuki had just vanished.  There one moment and gone the next.
No matter how people chattered and whispered among one another, as far as Ryou was concerned, it was too quiet. Yuusuke had never made much noise, but Ryou had always been aware that he was there.  Fubuki certainly made more than enough noise for the other two of them combined.  Not having him there made it seem as if a hole had been cut out of the world.
The clock bonged a deep, resonant noise, and Ryou at once got up, tucking his book away.  The other students quickly shut up and backed off, no one getting anywhere near him.  He'd expected that.  They'd been like that ever since word of Fubuki's disappearance spread throughout the school.   They would talk wherever he went, but not a single person dared to approach him.  He almost wished they would, just to clear the air.
He made his way to his room - his new room.  Everyone who had still been in the Obelisk Blue elite dorm had been relocated to the main Obelisk building.  This room didn't feel anything like his old one.  That one had had the marks of all the times he and Yuusuke and Fubuki had spent in it.  This one was flawlessly kept, not a scratch or scrape or personal item out of place.  Everything was where he'd left it.  It would always be where he left it.
Ryou settled down into his chair on the balcony.  The sun had long since set and now stars sprinkled the skies overhead.  It was the new moon; it would be very dark except for the starlight.
Fubuki said Yuusuke talked about darkness.  Is this what he wanted?  Ryou got up and headed over to the small area set up as a miniature kitchen.  Not much could be made here; it was mostly for hot drinks and the occasional snack.  He made tea, and stared down at it for a few moments as it dawned on him he'd poured out three cups without even thinking about it.
He missed them.  He had no idea of where they were or if they were even still alive.  He wanted to believe that they were, that he would see them again one of these days.  He had no idea of when or how - it could take years.  It probably would.
Ryou took the three cups over to the table outside and carefully doctored each one until they were just the way he, Yuusuke, and Fubuki liked them.  He picked up Yuusuke's cup and sipped at it.
Fujiwara Yuusuke.  One of the few who'd ever given him a true challenge in a duel.  He might not ever have that again.  They'd enjoyed several games of shogi against one another - and Yuusuke usually won those, though Ryou had a few victories under his belt as well.  They'd taken pictures together.  Ryou still had copies of those - though he knew that Yuusuke's copies had been destroyed.  He glanced to the nightstand beside his bed, where the picture of himself, Yuusuke, and Fubuki rested in a silver frame.  Yuusuke, Ryou thought, would become a researcher, perhaps help Industrial Illusions when it came to developing new cards.
When he finished the tea, he set the cup down, then picked up the next one.
Tenjoin Fubuki.  The tea gave him the feeling of the sea, of laughter and daring, of teasing and steadfast support.  Fubuki hid how good he really was at dueling.  He probably wouldn't have become a Pro Duelist, but he would support Yuusuke and Ryou no matter what they did, assuring them that each of them was an achiever in their own way.  And he would probably encourage them in their romantic lives, no matter what.
Not that Ryou had ever considered a romantic life.  He had the two people he cared about the most and he had his deck.  He'd never thought he'd need anything else.
With that cup done, he sampled his own at last.  He would become a Pro Duelist.  He would be the Champion one day.  He couldn't think of anything that would deter him from this.  Even without the other two there.  Perhaps that could even - somewhat - help.  He would focus on his studies.  Focus on his dueling.  It would give him something to do, which he knew he needed.
There had been a tradition for the past few years, that the most talented duelist be referred to as the Kaiser.  While there wasn't anything official about it, rumor had been that Yuusuke would be the one so named.  But now Ryou alone stood a chance at it.
Then that's what I'll be, he determined. No matter what happened, he would live his life to remember those he'd lost.  He loved dueling but he loved those two as well.  He would not forget - no matter what.
The End
Notes: It is implied that Yuusuke was capable of defeating Ryou. So perhaps he might have been the Kaiser if things had been diferent.

[fanfic] Time Spent Together
Ryou wasn't sure if he really heard anything in the siren cry of Cyber End Dragon.  The more he learned about spirits, the more he thought that he might, but he couldn't be entirely certain if that were because he did or because he wanted to.
I can't see spirits.  Truth to tell, he wasn't certain if that were a surprise or not.  There wasn't a great deal that he couldn't do it he put his mind to it, but it seemed just thinking hard about it wasn't good enough.
He did know one thing for certain - he thoroughly enjoyed seeing Cyber End Dragon's Eternal Evolution strike down his opponents.  Especially on those occasions when someone insisted that they'd built their deck specifically to counter his and they would break his flawless winning streak - and he'd really heard that more than he'd ever wanted to.  So far no one had been able to do that, and he didn't expect it to happen any time soon.  Perhaps once he got into the Pro Leagues.  There was always the chance he'd be set against DD, and he anticipated that.  Anyone who wanted to be the Pro League Champion would face DD sooner or later.  And sooner or later, someone would defeat him.  Ryou saw no reason that person couldn't be him.
Another year had to pass before then, however, at the least.  More than that, if he wanted to be truly accurate.  One last year of school and whoever knew how long after that until he earned his way high enough into the Pros.  Even for him that could take a while.
But for now, Ryou didn't have much to worry about.  His final year at Duel Academia wouldn't start for another two weeks and he'd finished all of the extra assignments that he'd requested.  He didn't really feel like going out for any extra dueling - and truth to tell, he missed Fubuki and Yuusuke a little too much today to duel.  Moods like this came on him now and then, and he expected it to be gone by morning.
So until then, he sorted through his deck, his fingers brushing across Cyber End Dragon's card as he did.  It tingled in that moment, and Ryou lifted it up to regard it thoughtfully.
Had he really heard something more than the usual cry when he'd last fought an opponent?  It had felt as if he had, if only a little.  Perhaps his Duel Disk needed to be checked over.  He'd used it regularly for over two years now.  Of course he oiled it on a regular basis and made sure that all of the parts worked, but there were parts that needed an expert's touch.  He could check into that before returning to Duel Academia.
That didn't change the fact that even as he touched the card now, he could feel something tingle inside, and the faintest of echoes of that cry sounded in the back of his mind.  He'd heard that cry often enough to know it whenever it sounded, no matter how faint the thread of the cry might be.  He stared at it thoughtfully.
"Are you trying to tell me something?"  He wondered aloud.  There wasn't any answer, at least not in any way he could be certain of.  Perhaps the card warmed some?  But it was a pleasant warm evening and he wasn't going to rule out the thought it had only been because of that.
He gathered up his cards, tucking Cyber End Dragon back with his other Fusion cards.  Whatever he felt might have been only the product of a little bit of heat, but he could be certain of one thing - he wanted to duel now.  And he knew for a fact that Cyber End Dragon wanted to duel as well.
And if he heard an extra dimension of life when Cyber End Dragon's Eternal Evolution blasted forth, then that wasn't such a bad thing.  He and the crown jewel of his deck had dueled side by side for years and if he couldn't figure out when his deck wanted to duel and answer that demand, then he'd be a poor duelist indeed.
And regardless, he did enjoy spending time with Cyber End Dragon, and there wasn't any better time than time spent dueling.
The En
Notes: One day I might write something where Ryou can communicate with spirits and actually has a meaningful conversation with Cyber End Dragon and all the other spirits of his deck.
