Novella time: Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard and The Ghosts of the Shadow Market by Cassandra Clare Minireviews | Lara

Broken Throne

Broken Throne is a collection of six Victoria Aveyard's novellas set in her Red Queen fantasy world. I feel like Aveyard’s style has improved over the years and these four novellas I’ve read were a quite enjoyable read with just enough events and interaction for a solid novella. I still think these novellas would not have been needed if she’d done the ending of War Storm right, but we get what we get, so…

Queen Song and Steel Scars -I’ve read these two back in 2018 when I was reading the entire series so I didn’t feel like rereading.

World Behind – a really nice novella, although I don’t know who are these people, I think this one might be my favorite

Iron Heart – wooo Evangeline, she was my favorite character and the only one beside Maven that I liked from the series. I thought this was going to be a novella about her, but it was actually just a lot of political after-war talk.

Fire Light – wait, did someone think I actually care about Mare and Cal anymore? I don’t. I don’t give a single fuck about their will-they-won't-they dramaturgy.

Fare Well – Maven and Cal relationship is something really complex and I really of liked reading this one.

The Ghosts of the Shadow Market

GotSM is another of Clare’s novella collection in the Shadow World. I’ve read first 7 novellas back in 2018 when they were published so I’m just gonna shot-review the ones I read now.

The Lost World – ugh when can I get more of Ty and his lynx uwu I don’t like this part of Livyy being a ghost tho, but there are lots of things I hated about the ending of QoAaD …

Forever Fallen – what the fuck? I hate this. I hate this parallel universe shit and bringing characters back and forth like they are the same person? Or are they. Clare obviously has no idea what the fuck she’s doing with the parallel universes and this is getting even worse and worse. Like does she even know how HER magic system works? Are there only two parallel universes? Or are there infinite more? Yay, that means we have a million more Jace’s and opportunities to recycle the plot!

don’t have much specific commentary about learn about loss + a deeper love I just have always loved the amount of heronstairs + Jessa yearning and I stand by that on reread <3.

Okay actually I don’t have nothing to say Tessa mentioning how one person coming clean with a secret can solve so many problems really summarizes the verse and people’s problems in it lolz also I love the Catarina backstory about her being a mother to a shadowhunter once I love that Tessa will have someone throughout the years who understands that experience and how it effects her (because pre tmi Magnus can understand about loves but not about that so much so I’m just glad …).

The detail of Tessa really wanting to be accepted by shadowhunters as co head of institute and being so excited/intent to make a good impression with the few visitors they do get :(.

have spoken on this before but it’s relevant again since Olivia Taylor Dudley (Alice the magicians) and Candice King (Caroline tvd) are both narrators on gotsm audiobook soo fascinated by the dedication to having actors from sff and/or teen drama adjacent shows narrate the Cassandra Clare book audiobooks like it can’t be a coincidence all in all James Marsters on the last two TDA books… Daniel Charmain on Clockwork Princess… he who must not be named on Clockwork Prince … (especially love Olivia Getting the Livvy story because half dead ghostie girl so her brand I love her)

finished rereading! Still really enjoy it <3 skimmed over my initial review from 2019 and my only change from then is apparently back then I didn’t know how I felt about the wicked ones vs this time it was my favorite story and I loved it. My other reactions pretty much are the same although I had more perspective on the TLH ones than the first read. But I’m taking a break from the cc rereads now just going to fully immerse myself in Locked Tomb and my rewatches fn

Through Blood, Through Fire is the first story that I like less than I remember on reread, the others I enjoyed as much I remembered or more. There are interesting moments like Tessa describing how the change process feels now vs back in TID era (+ the how her being pregnant effects it), the iconic Jem comparing his relationship with Will to Emma and Jules moment, and yk I love Jessa although there’s better Jessa content in A Deeper Love and other stories than this one imo. But I just.. don’t really care about Rosemary and Johnny, I get why it could be useful to learn this to set up for Kit’s TWP arc but as of right now Rosemary and their dynamic doesn’t feel real or relevant to me the way say, Celine and the circle characters in The Wicked Ones very much did. I feel like that’s my issue with it…

TSC chars who openly disdain both Jace and Robert Lightwood automatically get my respect/tend to be favs see: Magnus Jules and Lily does it in the most iconic way by far between calling Jace “Jason” to his face and telling Robert that she’s never going to want to know him / pretending not to know him to his face all the time. What a girl…
