I hope y'all are ready for camping fun because that's what chapter 23 of Shirabe Meshi is about. Time to post about the first half~

We start out with Hibiki and Kirika goofing around in the water with Chris sitting over to the side while Genjuro and Shirabe are preparing to cook some stuff on a grill

Hibiki and Kirika notice some fish going under the rock that Chris is sitting on and Kirika exclaims that it's a sign that there's a big catch to be made there so she grabs a net.

In an attempt to make the fish come out, Hibiki uh...prepares to punch the rock

Over by the grill, Shirabe comments that it's surprising he took them out just to do something for fun. Genjuro replies because the girls have to juggle going to school and fighting in their Gears, he wants them to be able to be kids every once in a while

...The rock punching thing did not go well btw

All three of them manage to get knocked down into the water, Kirika catching the fish in the process. Shirabe comes over to check on them...and Hibiki pulls her in too

She calls it her "S2CA Get Everyone Soaking Wet Combination"

Shirabe cracks up and everyone joins her in laughing. Genjuro comes over with towels telling them to get dry before they catch a cold.

Sitting around the campfire, they all eat fish and vegetables while talking to Tsubasa, Kanade, and Maria over a video call. Turns out they all have uh...very luxurious stuff going on (like Tsubasa receiving tiger puffer after recording a program) and poor Hibiki is just like "I feel like I lost to them..."

So after it gets dark they all sit around looking at the stars, which are a lot easier to see away from the city.

Chris: "Ah, that's the Milky Way?"

Hibiki: "Yeah! And that brightest star on the right there is Orihime, and the one on the other side there is Hikoboshi!"

Chris: "You sure know your stuff."

Kirika: "I haven't seen this many stars since we went to the moon"

Shirabe: (...I wonder if Shem-Ha and the others are on the moon.)

Then Kirika notices a shooting star so they all make a wish

Shirabe: "I'd like to buy eggs the next time they're on sale"

Kirika: "I hope Shirabe doesn't find out I ate her gelatin snack"

Hibiki: "I want to eat rice and more rice for the rest of my life"*

Chris: "I want to rid the world of all conflict"

(*If you wanna go with the "food and more food" translation, that's fine too. I tend to go with rice because that's the joke some Japanese materials go with)

Kirika tells Genjuro to wish for something too. He says that adults should try to make things happen instead of just wishing, but there is someone he'd like to see. Hibiki automatically assumes he's talking love

In the tent that night, they can't really sleep so Hibiki suggests scary stories. Shirabe mentions that there's one from this very campsite, which Hibiki recognizes as one the lady from reception told

...Chris is not handling this plan very well

And that's it for the first half. The other half will be in a week.

Symphogear attack names

@mimeparadox alerted me to the fact that Kirika's attack names are crimes against linguistics, so I started looking at all of the Gear users' attacks. Much thanks to the wiki, which helpfully compiles not only the attacks, but their title cards, the romanization, and the original text!

I'm only looking at anime attacks. From "least cringe" to "Kirika":

Miku: Two-character Chinese phrases. Short, sweet, dignified.

Hibiki: Cheating because she doesn't get attack name cards at all. See post-ranking paragraphs.

Mid-tier: Maria/Tsubasa/Kanade tie. These girls are chuuni, but are relatively self-aware enough to have some restraint. However, Tsubasa might actually be one tier up by a sliver. She's getting away with some shit by doing hers in foreign language calligraphy, but see the post-ranking paragraphs.

Chris: Name that rock band! Golden spot of delightful indulgence. I dare anyone to not smile whenever MEGADETH PARTY shows up like an old friend. Chris has one (1) genre on her music player, and she doesn't give a fuck.

Shirabe: [greek alphabet letter]-style: {[spinning reference] AND/OR [cutting thing/action reference] wrapper addition/s to make it chuuni}

Kirika: Aforementioned CRIMES AGAINST LINGUISTICS. Build a desired phrase. May or may not include kana-ized English referencing a western fictional character. Add chuuni Japanese as necessary. Find phonetic syllables in Japanese that can be represented by tortured kanji readings that fit desired meaning. Substitute other kana with English alphabet letters. Featuring such great hits as:

災輪・TぃN渦ぁBェル

愚焔・PぇtttE炉

断殺・邪刃ウォttKKK (did you know that you spell Jabberwock with "t"s? that's how Kirika rolls, death)

兇脚・Gぁ厘ィBアa

So, like, there are indications that these aren't relic-defined names, but things that the girls themselves came up with. The strongest evidence for this is Gungnir, which has three users across the length of the show. Not only does the show make it explicit that Hibiki is coming up with the attack names herself, as they are called "Hibiki Style", but even the two who are using Gungnir as intended, Kanade and Maria, have their attacks names tailored to them. Kanade's all involve the "∞" sign, which don't show up in Hibiki or Maria's attacks.

Maria and Chris also both present even stronger evidence, as the rare users who have performed attacks across two different relics, and their tailored quirks are present in both. With Gungnir and Airgetlam, Maria's attacks feature the "†" sign splitting capitalized English. With both Nehushtan and Ichaival, Chris features rock band references in Old English font.

And this isn't even getting into the NONSENSE when combo attacks enter the fray, as each girl's naming quirks get thrown into a blender. Not only do we have Shirabe and Kirika throwing their Greek-letter-tortured-kanji-random-romanized-letters shit together into the likes of "禁合β式・Zあ破刃惨無uうNN", but then you add Maria's cross-capitalized-English-chuuni, and get "禁結終Ω式・爍機†TRINITY".

Another canon case of an attack evidently being named by a person is S2CA, which is short for "Superb Song Combination Arts", despite the fact that it makes zero sense in Japanese, where "Superb Song" is "Zessho". Forced acronyms transcend the curse of Balal!

(Tsubasa sidebar: so if we're assuming that attacks are named by their users, then the likelihood that Tsubasa's attacks are actually more chuuni in the original Japanese goes way up. Tsubasa doesn't know what normal is! Her baseline standard is the Kazanari family, and her ninja idol manager! Not to mention that her main transformation song is already borderline self parody in S2. Japanese imagery, sword, sword, blade, sword, blade, blade, I am sword, sword is me, etc. Maria and Kanade's attack names are constrained by being only 1-2 English words. Tsubasa out here throwing out flowery whole scroll calligraphy. Every added character brings her closer to Shirabe and Kirika's level.)

You may notice that this ranking suspiciously seems to follow the level of lack of blood family and divorce from civilian life. Chris, Maria, Shirabe, and Kirika are all orphans who were coerced into exploitation. However, Maria still had Serena, who overtly shares her surname, which suggests blood ties (they still don't share Anastassia's surname).

One step further on this, though, is that Chris was yet still closer to Kanade's situation in that she did know who her civilian parents were before she lost them. The Yukine surname was never in question, which is not necessarily the case for the Receptor Children. It's possible that some of these kids may have chosen their surnames for themselves after being freed from captivity.

Which would explain why you can get a Gundam-ass name like "Maria Cadenzavna Eve", which makes little to no sense in terms of ethnic name origin. Maria is Greek+Latin via Hebrew, Eve is English via Latinized Hebrew, and then Cadenzavna is a nonsense mishmash of Italian and Eastern European.

"Kusanagi Motoko" from Ghost in the Shell is a pseudonym (admitted canonically in 2nd gig), which is something like "(plain) Jane Excalibur". It seems obvious to me that "Akatsuki Kirika" and "Tsukuyomi Shirabe" are similar. The music/sound-based given names apply across most all of the Gear users, but I can easily see these two goobers picking the edgiest surnames (with shared moon connotations!) for themselves. Which, per the first half of this post, is reinforced by how chuuni their self-defined attack names are. (Meanwhile, Maria loses her little sister called Serena, and then replaces her with two girls with moon-associated surnames, eh. Maria, the Eastern European who would have been more likely to watch a dub of an anime than the sub, and wore that odango hairstyle as a child...)

Second half of the Assault Lily collab was today. The fight against the Huge takes up a good amount of it so I can summarize a bit more easily (although a lot of it is mostly a scene between Kirika and Kaede thanks to that)

Hibiki was overdoing her training after the flow of the fight got all messed up at the end of the first half but Tsubasa, Riri, and Yuyu come in and convince her to take a break since she's worrying everyone

So the four of them go out for ramune. Hibiki and Tsubasa have to have it laid out for them that just calling each other Sister or by a first name isn't what matters, it's their bonds and the experiences they've shared fighting alongside each other. They start addressing each other as they normally do again instead of trying to force something that wasn't natural for them

Riri (to Yuyu): You're the best big sister in the world!

Hibiki: Ah, I'm not gonna lose to you. My big sister is the best in the world!

Tsubasa: Hey, weren't we going to stop?

Hibiki: Aw, but it's true and I kinda like calling you that. Is it okay if I still do so every once in a while?

Tsubasa: I am begging you, cut it out

So after that they run into Kirika and learn that Kaede's been ignoring her until she apologizes, but Kirika just does not get what she needs to apologize for. The others don't really seem to get it either but they suggest perhaps she could try putting herself in Kaede's shoes for a bit to maybe understand her side a little better. Hibiki gives the starting point of Kaede's feelings towards Riri being the same as Kirika's towards Shirabe's, even if the relationships themselves are different

Kirika goes off to think about it and Hibiki wonders if the advice was even any good or just nonsense and Tsubasa says at this point to just let them work it out themselves

Later the Huge guarding the wormhole appears again. Hibiki and Tsubasa are having an easier time watching each other's backs but Kaede keeps rushing in on her own and ignoring Kirika who's trying to help. She almost gets hit by an attack but Kirika covers for her. Kaede agrees to listen to her just once as a special thanks for taking the hit

Kirika starts to bring up Shirabe but then Kaede just goes "We're done here, good day" saying she doesn't want to listen to her brag about her love life

Kirika assures her she's not just bragging about her love life but warns her she's not very good at thinking or talking so she ends up rambling:

Kirika: I love Shirabe! She means so SO much to me! But uh...Shirabe says she loves me too, and...wait no, that's not quite what I...No matter what my relationship with Shirabe is or what she thinks of me, the point is that I love Shirabe! I really really really love Shirabe, always, forever and ever! So, uhh...Huh? ...What was I saying?

Kaede: Okay that's enough. What was that you said about "I'm not going to brag about my love life?" That's 100% what you're doing!

Kirika begs her for another chance but Kaede says she won't get one...because she's fine now. Even if it's unrequited between herself and Riri, the feelings they have towards someone else are the same

Now that Kaede's cooled down from her irrational anger with Kirika, she finally comes up with the idea of hitting Kirika with her CHARM the same way Riri and Yuyu accidentally did to Hibiki and Tsubasa to get her Gear to change forms. Kirika's nervous about it at first, since it's not guaranteed to work, but says she'll trust Kaede, even if she is "kinda weird sometimes"

Kaede hits her so hard she knocks her back. She doesn't think it worked at first so she goes back to the Huge by herself but Kirika gets back up like "Geez, you didn't have to hit me so hard!"

At least it worked lol

They team back up with the other four to fight the larger Huge but they can't seem to take it down and Hibiki comes up with a plan that's so ridiculous it just has to work

She suggests the Neunwelt tactic ("But we don't have enough Lilies NOR the bullet") and comes up with basically using S2CA with Kirika and Tsubasa since the three of them can't actually use Magie and then combining that with the Neunwelt tactic (with less people) making HERSELF be the bullet passed between Kaede, Yuyu, and Riri

...And of course they somehow pull it off and finally take out the Huge

Afterward they promise to see each other again and go out for ramune together and the Lilies go back to their world through the wormhole

Events often have a bonus scene that unlocks after EX Quest 4 is added to the event and cleared so perhaps there will be one here too

Little fix for where the genie’s neck wasn’t purple. If you have an unlocker for the genie hair, the black one will ♪ look weird ♪ Here’s a PSD (also here) for anyone who wants to switch out the mm color seen above for whatever color their genie default replacement is.

Edit! I finally noticed the genie hair doesn’t even need an unlocker so maybe just use the brown, blond, or red if you want a non-genie sim to wear this hat and you also use this fix

(This probably sounds really dumb, but I’m glad that S2CA still has backfire on Hibiki. She used it in the current event and sometimes I be wondering that Symphogear be taking out the consequences of what it actually does (or things in general).

She does it multiple times in G, where the pain is obvious (and dangerous).

She does it in GX and AXZ, but I think the strain was better because they had Maria there to distribute it between everyone instead of Hibiki taking it within herself (as she said, though Hibiki suggested it before Maria said this but Tsubasa was like “your body can’t handle the strain”).

So in this AU Chris/Tsubasa event, AU Tsubasa tries using her Zesshou but Hibiki quickly sings her own to counter it and then normal Chris and Tsubasa sing as well, which allows Hibiki to use S2CA and distribute the power on their enemy instead so they won’t face the backlash. BUT because of that, it was clear that Hibiki suffered some backlash herself since she seemed to keep having issues (based on dialogue).

And, this is totally random and probably not that important I know but...considering how powerful the Gears are and can be, I’m just glad that they aren’t ALL POWERFUL and whatnot.)

Symphogear G Episodes 01-04

Now... Let's begin.

And the symphogear marathon continues! Today was very busy and I thought I wouldn’t be able to watch symphogear today, BUT HERE I AM! THE STRIKE CONTINUES!

We’re starting season 2 and like I’ve mentioned this is a very special season to me. G was the first season I got to watch weekly and from all seasons It was the one in which I was the most active in the fandom, so I’M EXCITED.

So, Episode 1 starts weird. Not because of the flashback, I actually like it being played there it peaks up your curiosity because we've never seen those characters before and we see a new symphogear and everything, it's really great. But from that, we go to a fighting scene that's is happening in the middle of a mission so it's a bit confusing. 

But if we put this awkwardness to the side this beginning is actually pretty strong. Dark Oblivion playing in the background while is random it still serves a purpose cuz it raises the tension of the situation. Hibiki and Chris show amazing chemistry together, is really great to see how their relationship flourished and even though Chris still show signs of reluctance in a few moments we see that both of them are very comfortable in this friendship and they like each other quite a lot. And the climax of the battle with Hibiki's plan to defeat the "boss" noise is just incredibly amazing.

ALSO,

WE GOT PROPER TRANSFORMATIONS THIS TIME! YAY! The ones from season one have some nice aesthetic to it but I’m not gonna lie, these ones are way better.

Going in the second half we have the traditional duo live on a stadium that is always magnificent. I don't know if it holds the same iconicness (?) as the live from season one, but this one sure jumps to the eye and is pretty beautiful. I especially like those mic/swords/torches, they're an amazing prop and the way they integrate it with the performance and the dance is just gorgeous.

The revelation of Maria being evil and all, I don't think that it really works. Even if I was watching this for the first time, since we already got hints of it before with that phone call scene we could already have some suspicions on her and it weakens the moment, if instead of that we had only Mom talking without having a good visual clue or something I think this could've worked better.

AND SPEAKING OF HINTS, that moment when they drop Professor Ver and he gives that psycho laugh is just... C'mon guys.

Regardless, a great episode (not as strong as S01E01, but still great).

Not a lot happens in Episode 2 so I don’t have a lot to say. It picks up from where the last episode ended and most of it was just Maria and Tsubasa, who later get aided by their companions fighting. There’s nothing so special about the fight but is worth to point out that Tsubasa’s new fighting song is probably one of the greatest in the hole series, and that both trios are parallels to each other to some extent and that’s a pretty neat detail that I never picked up in the past 6 years (which is a shame).

Again this episode tries some revelations but none of them really work. Like I said, in the last episode, Ver already dropped major hints that he’s evil so seeing him with the Staff of Solomon at the end doesn’t tickle me. Kirika and Shirabe in their gears could’ve been an interesting moment but since we got a scene earlier where Shirabe just puts her pendant ou like if it was no big deal there’s no surprise when they come to aid Maria (ALSO THE OPENING SPOILED THAT A LITTLE BIT SO).

I think the more important thing about this episode is seeing how easily Shirabe got to break Hibiki. I personally don’t think Hibiki should’ve gotten so shaken by those words but from a character standpoint it that reaction makes sense for her. It is the start of a new emotional ark that I’m excited to revisit.

A last note, about the S2CA Tri-Burst, Chris keeps saying that the technique isn’t complete yet but like... how are you supposed to even train this thing? How you gonna hone this technique to perfection? HOW THE HELL DID EVEN THIS BECAME A THING WHEN THE SUPERB SONGS ARE KINDA LIKE DEADLY???????? Questions, so many questions.

Episode 3 is pretty boring for the entirety of its first part. A lot of that is just exposition done in the less creative way possible.

Things get interesting in the second half, but being honest I didn’t care for most of the “symphogear” plot and was more interested in seeing the girls at school. We got a really nice moment of Chris and Tsubasa bonding and I wish we could’ve seen more of that in this episode. As much as the fight brought interesting elements like Nephilim and that gas that lows their compatibility with the gears, everything went so fast it didn’t leave an impression.

Another problem to me is Ver revealing himself so early, it took what? 9 episodes to Finé to finally show her face and say “I’m the boss yall gonna fight later” and Ver is here in episode 3 already flashing himself out. It seems dumb.

I also don’t like the “new Finé” thing, but I remember this causing some interesting conflict later on so it doesn’t bother that much.

Episode 4 makes me so confused. Not that there’s something in the episode that is too hard to understand but is the way the narrative changes that bugs my mind.

We have such a big shift from the first half to the second that is like watching two different shows. I think they wanted to spread out both the action and the more light-hearted stuff to create some balance but what creates is just confusion.

If they had gathered all of the “gear plot” from last episode and this one in a single episode, then grab the school life elements from episodes 3, 4 and probably 5 and made that it’s own thing we would have better episodes that would have the time to develop properly what they want to develop and would take away this awkward feeling that it causes. Yes, most people would then consider the school festival episode a “filler” but honestly, I think is better than having comedic moments right after such a tense fight. Comic relief is good and is needed, but everything has its time and the way they handled in this episode wasn’t right.

But hey, we got to see Chirs singing Kyoshitsu Monochrome in one of the most beautiful live scenes I’ve ever seen so, I think I’ll be able to sleep and have nice dreams tonight. See you guys tomorrow (if I don’t take too much time in the bank with my grandma, PRAY FOR ME).

1.  Pencil skirt with oxfords | swatch      Plain blouse | swatch Two sets of separates: the skirt comes both with tucked and untucked versions in six different colours. The mesh has fat and pregnant morphs. The blouse also comes in six colours and uses one of my older meshes, which I’ve included.

2.   Grandpa cardigan | swatch This Bunhead’s mesh is easily one of my favourite things for adult men in my game. To get more excuses to put it on everyone, I added to the list of recolours with this set. Again, six colours because it is a comfortable number and mesh included.

3.  Good luck charm necklaces | swatch I ripped four pretty textures from one of Yuxi’s gorgeous wall art uploads and put them on Aikea’s necklace mesh. Then I put them all in a folder.

4.  Newsea J106f scaled down, enabled for all ages and retextured | swatch | bodyshop It doesn’t even look that much smaller than the original, but trust me, I scaled the size down quite a bit! While I was at it, I added all ages to the mesh, burnt cookies, wept and retextured it in 22 colours. Elders keep theirs but also have the option of two greys. The hairs have been binned into five families.
