He grabs his things from your kitchen table. He slides his phone into his pocket and walks back over to you. His hands snake around your waist. He kisses the side of your neck gently. You stand up straighter, no longer leaning against the counter and helplessly waiting for your coffee to finish brewing.

“It’s not about your clothes, it’s you.”

He definitely needs to leave in the next few minutes to be on time but part of you, a tiny non-thinking part, wants him to be late so you can stay this way for a while. Both of you go quiet. The sound of coffee dripping into your cup is the only thing you can heart until Jeno checks his watch. You lean your head back. One of Jeno’s hands moves up. As he opens your front door and you pour your first cup of coffee, he smiles at you. There’s something in his eyes you can’t quite decipher. The only word that comes to mind is fondness. “And you do look exceptionally good today.”

You hop on a bar stool. You lean over, trying to flag down the bartender. You attempt to call for the man but the blaring music in the background drowns out your words. Just as the bartender begins to turn towards you, someone to your left pushes you to the side. You stumble off the stool. You don’t fall fully to the ground but stumble for a second before you can recover. He saddles up on the stool you were sitting on and waves his card around. 

Before you’re fully recovered from the half-fall, Jeno appears by your side. His face is pulled into contorted concern. He’s holding your arm gently and glancing around for the cause.

“Did he push you?” He asks.

You’re sure he already knows the answer. Especially when, after he makes sure you’re okay, he taps on the man’s shoulder. The man blows him off. Jeno grabs his shoulder and the man tries to shrug it off, continuing to wave his hand at the bartender. You can see Jeno roll his shoulders back. He tilts his head slightly. Even behind him, you’re growing worried for the sitting man.

He grabs the man’s shoulder much harder and pulls the man to face him.

“What?” The man snaps. He comes face-to-face with Jeno. “What do you want?”

“Apologize to my husband.” Jeno states.

The word at the end makes your eyes go wide. It knocks the wind out of you much worse than the fall did.

The man looks over Jeno’s shoulder. He rolls his eyes and turns back around. “He was in my way.”

You can hear Jeno scoff. He grabs the man once more. He lifts the man off the seat. “Apologize. Now.”

“Or what?” The man stands around the same height as Jeno. Maybe an inch or so taller.

He glares at Jeno but Jeno’s posture doesn’t change. Jeno turns slightly, keeping his face directed towards the man but directing him in your direction.

“You don’t want to know how much I would do for him. Apologize, or I drag you outside.”

Something in Jeno’s face must convince the man he doesn’t want to pursue that argument. He rolls his eyes again. 

“You’re not even worth it.” He holds his hands up, still pretending to be strong in this scenario, despite him backing away from you and Jeno. “Sorry.”

He over pronounces the two-syllable word and finally walks away. You look to Jeno, slightly concerned for him but more confused about the situation. Jeno rolls his eyes. He looks towards you and smiles, a complete opposite impression of the person he was before.

“What was that?” You ask.

“He pushed you.” Jeno answers. It seems simple to him when is anything but simple to you. He pulls the stool closer to him and points to it. “come on, you wanted to order?”

You look at him. You still have semi-wide eyes. You repeat. “What was that?” He was being rude.” He pats the stool and leans over the bar. “I  knew you weren’t going to say anything, so I did.”

You jump unto the stool. His hand rests on your thigh. He raises his other hand slightly, holding two fingers up. The bartender walks towards you immediately. You put your order in and Jeno orders another drink. He looks at you with something between a smirk and a smile.

The bartender begins to walk away. You feel weirdly nervous in Jeno’s stare. He can tell you’re thinking of something. You don’t want to share but both of you are aware that with just a few more seconds of Jeno looking at you, every thought you’ve ever had will be spilled to the floor. Sure enough, you’re opening your mouth to repeat the wondering statement bouncing and repeating in your head.

“You called me your husband.”

Jeno doesn’t act like it’s as big of a deal as you feel it is. He shrugs his shoulders. “It feels stronger to say when I stick up for you. I want you to be, anyway. Maybe I wanted to start getting used to saying it.”

You sit in the chair with a tight expression. Thousands of thoughts are running through your head. Jeno smiles to himself as the bartender returns with your beverages. Jeno notices you’re still frozen in place.

“You know, a lesser person would be offended you’ve been frozen by me wanting to be your husband, but I’m going to choose that you’re in shock.”

He bumps your shoulder and waits for you to join him walking back to the other boys. You sit back down at your seat and Jeno places your drink in front of you. The others are recounting different stories to each other, laughing and talking louder than the music playing. Jeno stands beside you and gently picks up your hand. He looks at you with a soft expression, one completely devoid of the anger he had seconds ago, and joins in adding details to the winding stories being told.

Jeno comes home to a lit house. The ceiling lights are off but every other light in your shared house is on. LED lights by the TV, changed lamp bulbs, fairy lights stringing through the hallway and spread as far as possible through the house all emit a light-blue light. Confusion overwhelms him as he kicks his shoes off. He’s walking closer to the couch when a noise is heard. It’s a thumping noise. Similar to something hitting the wall. The noise makes him slightly more worried about the house he came home to. That is, until he sees you down the hallway. He can see cords hanging form your ears. Headphones shake and move along with you as you dance-walk down the hallway. He begins to wonder why you wouldn’t play the music through a speaker but given how scared you are of your next-door neighbor, the thought dissipates quickly. You’re using your phone as a microphone. He doesn’t make himself known. You move backwards down the hallway, accidently bumping into the wall one more time. You turn around dramatically, lip-synching your heart out. You jump when you see Jeno, eyes widening for a split second before calming yourself down. You giggle and his heart swells two times the size. You hesitate for a second before continuing to move closer to him. You jump on the coffee table, carefully stepping around the clutter collecting on top of it.

You point to him and begin to sing out loud. Jeno is tired. His shoulders were drooping down just moments earlier, but seeing his long-time boyfriend and love of his life dancing around their shared apartment makes him wake up. Your smile is bright and effortless as you dance around the coffee table/stage. You jump onto the couch, almost falling onto the cushions. You reach up and caress his face gently. You dance around a bit more carefully not that you’re attached to someone but your big smile is just as clear. He pulls your phone out of your hand. He scrolls through to find a song. He seems to find one he likes and steps off the couch. He turns to you, wrapping his arm around your waist and lifting you off the couch. He walks you backwards. You hold his shoulders as the song begins.

A very soft, slow song begins to play through your headphones. Jeno’s looking at you with so much adoration. His eyes twinkle like he’s looking at the most beautiful sight on the planet. You’re reveling in the look, though you’re not sure you deserve the honor. Jeno’s hands slip down to hold your waist. He pulls you to his chest. He dips his head to lean next to yours, humming along with the song. The low noise rattles against your heart. You press one of your hands against his chest, the other traveling under his shirt. He rocks you back and forth along with the tune. You dance for a while. The song shifts into another slow-dance song. That fades into another. You stay close together, swaying to the beat, for a long, long time. Soon Jeno is pressing light kisses to your neck. Your eyes drift closed, the beautiful image of your future husband looking at you with wonderful eyes permanently ingrained in your mind.

He almost has yearning in his eyes. Though, you aren’t sure why he would long for you when you are in front of him and will never leave or want to. You smile is peaceful. Tender and genuine. Jeno can truly see you want to be here with him. He’s always known you feel as strongly towards him as he does to you but something about the moment and the gentleness in your face makes him appreciate it more than he would on a regular day. He holds your face and leans down. Your foreheads are pressed together for a moment before he finally begins to speak.

“This isn’t me asking you to marry me, I have a plan for that,” He hums. Your eyes begin to widen as he speaks. “But, this is me putting it out into the universe that I am going to marry you in the future.”

AN: I feel much better about this short fic than my last one, so I hope you guys like it too!

Ethan x MC (Levin Stern)

Levin is asleep in the front seat of Ethan’s Jaguar, she’s not been sleeping well since the start of the second trimester of her pregnancy, often complaining of headaches, nausea and back pain. All very common for a woman of her age, height and weight carrying twins but nonetheless, Ethan feels completely and utterly helpless to do anything to ease her pain. He tries to ease the uncomfort as much as he can but there’s only so much raspberry sorbet and shoulder massages can do. Levin is grateful never the less, she knows how far out of his way he goes to please her, like going to the linen store to get a soft blanket and cushion to keep in his car for drives like this. The older doctor doesn’t mind it when she falls asleep in the car, he loves driving, it's cathartic for him. He would drive across the country if he could. He plays Clouds by Debussy on the car's speakers and though he is yet to find enough scientific journals to confirm the long term neural effects of classical prenatal music exposure, he’s sure it can't hurt.

They’re going to spend the weekend with Levin’s family in Fairhaven, she gets very homesick when she’s feeling ill and this week has been riddled with headaches and cramps. So he took the weekend off to spend it with her, even though she’s fully capable of driving and it’s still very safe, Ethan feels much more at ease when he accompanies her on trips like this. Her parents live on a small block of land only a few minutes drive out of Fairhaven, the land is lush and green and whenever they’re there, Levin and Ethan feel immensely at peace. The stress and weight of the hospital are not on their shoulders, they spend their days on the farm soaking up the sun or horseback riding, though Levin might have to wait a bit longer before she can get back in the saddle. Ethan loves it here, the smell of fresh cut grass is his favourite but it’s not something you smell often in Boston. Levin’s older siblings are spread across the world, so it’s only the four youngsters occupying the house but Isa has made sure that Levin’s room remains untouched, awaiting her next visit patiently. Ethan loves Levin’s teenage room, the decor is green and lush like a forest with stunning photos she’s taken from her global living adorning the walls, lit up by strings of fairy lights. He’d never imagined he’d love the look of a room like hers but that’s what it is: hers. Ethan feels like he’s taken a step inside her mind, the serene part of her brain, that dreams in the sound of crashing waves and foggy mornings, dew on the long grass and rain hitting the roof.

Ethan loves Levin the most when they’re here.

The drive to Fairhaven is without trouble or excitement when they arrive at the small hobby farm just outside of town, Ethan shakes Levin’s shoulder gently, surprised she wasn’t awoken by the bumpy trip down the dirt drive. Levin rubs her eyes and pulls on her scarf before stepping out of the car and as if on cue, the front door to the farmhouse blasts open and Isa and Edda run up to greet the pair. They’re about to attack Levin with affection until they stop just a couple of metres short, remembering the two extra guests, stowed away beneath layers of skin and cashmere.

“Woah, your belly is really big,” Isa has a look of awe across her face and Ethan chuckles, moving to tousle her hair. She has obviously dressed herself today as she sports a bright silver skirt with farm boots and a Batman shirt.

“Our little stowaways are getting pretty big aren’t they?” Isa wraps her hand in Ethan’s as he leads the Stern women back inside the house, where Levin’s mother is now standing by the door, holding the dogs from escaping out into the yard.

“It’s rude to call out someone’s weight you big dork,” Levin retorts to the ten-year-old who laughs softly watching Levin navigate the stairs going up to the porch with a careful pace, leaning back into her steps.

Edda pipes up beside her, she had the biggest, most beautiful brown eyes and anyone who’s ever seen them says so, “I think you look gorgeous Levy,” Edda is beautiful inside and out, she’s a soft, empathetic soul and a bit of a sad sack at times, but she levels out the craziness of the Stern clan. Levin squeezes her hand as she makes her way over to the door, her mum enveloping her in a warm hug, she smells like Christmas morning - cinnamon and nutmeg. She must be making cinnamon rolls.

“Oh my lord, Levin, look at you!” Kina exclaims and holds her daughter at arm's length, Levin will be the first of her children to give birth to twins, “How many weeks now?” She asks as she leads Levin into the warmth of the farmhouse.

“Twenty-six weeks, not long to go now,” Levin replies as she walks towards the kitchen, on the hunt for something - anything to eat. The pregnancy cravings have got her eating more now than when she stress ate her way through the medical entrance exams and the final season of True Blood. Levin plants herself on one of the cushioned stools surrounding the kitchen bench, pulling a banana from the fruit basket less Ethan throw a fit over her not meeting prenatal nutritional needs. “Actually, I was hoping you could come up to the city next weekend, Ethan is going away for a medical conference and I’ll need help setting up everything in the new house,” Levin asks Kina as she brews a pot of tea, Edda has disappeared but Isa remains faithfully and loyally attached to her sisters side.

“Can I come? I promise I’ll be the biggest help!” She looks up at Levin with puppy dog eyes.

Levin has already demolished the banana by now, “Gotta ask mum dorkface, she’s the one that’s got to deal with you,” She hands the banana peel to Isa who dutifully disposes of the scrap in the compost bin.

Ethan is leaning against the kitchen counter chucking to himself, Levin has Isa completely entranced, ready to go to war for her fearless older sister, no task is too big or small for Isa to show her unending adoration. He knows that Isa has the same effect on his Rookie, who just last week, cried when she heard that Isa had the flu and she couldn’t go and take care of her little sister.

“I’m sure we could find something for you to do at the new house, maybe you could help set up the nursery?” Kina replies and Isa squeals with excitement, scaring the dogs and every human within a five-mile radius.

Ethan helps Kina make lunch, roast chicken with all the accompaniments and they take it out to the dining room to serve everyone. Marti, who is sixteen now has come out of her room to socialise, she’s studying hard to get into sports medicine and the ACTs are coming up soon. Jos, Isa’s twin brother, only speaks in four-word sentences and doesn’t sit still for long, he’s got pretty intense ADHD and keeping his attention for more than five minutes is more challenging than anything Ethan has encountered in his medical career. They sit around the table and debate on what to do for the rest of the afternoon - Isa wants to play board games, Edda wants to play lawn bowls outside, Kina thinks they should all sit in the sunroom and paint. Levin’s mother is an amazing artist, using art as her therapy on a daily basis, more often since she quit smoking cigarettes last year.

They decide on board games on the porch, so that Edda and Jos can run around as much as they please when they finish up with lunch, Levin forgoes boardgames to nap on the hammock, its the comfiest she’s felt in days. Isa and Ethan set up a game of Scrabble and as the game progresses, he’s sure this kid will run the world one day. How the hell does she know the word ‘liaison’?

“Are you excited for the babies?”

Ethan puts down his next tiles then looks up towards Isa, “I’m extremely excited but I’m also a little nervous,” he tells her truthfully, “I didn’t grow up in a large family like you and Levin, I haven’t had much experience with babies,” it almost feels like he’s talking to Levin when they have conversations like this, it’s like she has managed to clone herself into a pocket-sized version of Levin, though this version is almost more sassy than the original.

“I think you’ll be a good dad and me and Edda and Marti will help you, we know all about babies,” she nods with strong assurance, “plus you’re a doctor so you’re super smart so you can be good with babies,” Ethan chuckles at this as he tallies up the new score.

“I know a lot of babies in theory but the practice is a new field for me, Isa, I can tell you how many fingers and toes they have right now, but I don’t know how to stop them from crying when they come out,”

A look of wonder crosses Isa’s soft brown eyes, “You know what they look like right now?” Ethan can tell she’s completely forgotten about the board game as she leans across the table, “You have to tell me.”

Ethan leans across the table now too, resting his weight on his elbows, “Well,” he begins, “they have a thin layer of hair over them called lanugo which keeps them warm and they can hear things fairly clearly now - they know how to cover their ears if there’s a loud sound out here in the environment. They also open their eyes soon and they’ve fingerprints now as well,” the more he goes through the specifics of the babies life in utero, the more Isa’s face lights up, Ethan can see the cogs in her brain turning, trying to figure out what they look like and what it all means.

By the time they begin to finish their conversation, it’s well into the afternoon and almost time for the kids to wash up before dinner, the Scrabble game is long forgotten. Levin wakes from her slumber on the hammock and makes her way over to where Ethan is sitting, gently perching herself on his lap.

“You know we still haven’t thought about baby names,” Levin muses, interrupting Ethan from the trail of kisses he’s laying along her soft shoulders and neck. They haven’t asked the obstetrician about the sex of the twins, they want it to be a surprise.

“Hm, I guess you’re right, I haven’t been thinking about the names I do like so much as the ones I don’t,” he tells her, pulling her long hair back so he can kiss more of her décolletage, “but for what it’s worth, I like the name, Allegra,” Levin ponders this.

“I love that, I think its a gorgeous name, I like the name Laurence for a boy, Laurie for short,” she is hoping for two boys but she knows a girl would please Isa the most.

“Like Little Women,” Ethan points out, one of Levin’s favourite childhood books, she still keeps a copy given to her by her great aunt on the bookshelf, its pages yellow with age. Ethan would be happy with any combination of boys or girls, he just can't wait for the next and possibly most challenging chapter of his life to start. They sit out on the deck for hours, talking until Levin is almost falling asleep again. He takes her into the bedroom, turns on the strings of fairy lights and tucks a sleeping Levin into bed before sliding in next to her, the room is calm and peaceful with the soft, white glow of the lights as he places a kiss on her hair, “I love you, Rookie,” he murmurs into her hair, she smells like peaches and vanilla, “and our little stowaways.”

   Who cried when they brought their child home for the first time:

“So ah....d'at's happenin'.”The phone shakes in Luka’s hand as he tries to get a good view of the back seat from over his shoulder. The video captures Beth, wane and frailer than she normally looks, but somehow more radiant than ever as she fusses with the tiniest of socks on the tiniest of feet sticking out of the swaddling blanket wrapping the sleeping infant up inside the newborn car seat.There’s a rousing and tinny chorus of shouts and whoops, whistles and other celebratory noises that he’s sure won’t be delighting the rest of the two hundred men crammed inside the Quonset huts that are home for his unit, as Boss and the rest try to crowd around the crappy old computer setup. It may be 4 in the afternoon in Hawai’i, but it’s only 6.30 the next morning where they are.“Could say ‘wishin’ ye lo’ were here’, bu’....be bi’o’a’loi’e.”

She half grins but no one can tell if it’s at Luka’s comment or the baby.One of them asks the obvious question at hand.“Dunna have o’ name ye’... stars dunno be o’loi’ned or some shite.”House is sobbing when the camera cuts out, the video call interrupted by terrible satellite internet, the time ran out, someone farted the wrong way, a dozen other reasons that don’t seem to matter at the moment.“No’ true, Lulu. Her name is Po’okelamakanahawikahepualaha’ole.”He gives her the same look he did when she said that in the hospital. It’s got to be the drugs still in her system if she thinks he can even begin pronouncing that name.

Who would wake up in the middle of the night to check on the kid(s):He’ll never tell Beth that she snores. Not loudly, not even really noticeable if not for these moments when he’s awake and everything else...isn’t. She sleeps on her side and curls around the baby, protectively. He reaches out and tucks a stray lock of hair back behind her ear. That’s when he notices that Éire is awake too. Staring up at him with big hazel eyes and little spit bubbles at her mouth. It feels almost like theft when he gingerly gets out of bed and scoops her up, careful not to wake mommy shark.They go out in the garden where he sings snippets of his mother’s old lullabies he can barely remember. Faery tales older than his blood. Offers her coffee since they’re up early as he moves past the gate and out onto the sand, introducing her to the sea and the moon in ways her mother can’t.

Who changes the kid(s) diapers:

“No...d’at be o’WMD...”He’s holding the folded up diaper at arm’s length as far from him as he could get.“...Geneva be makin’ conventions against d’is sort o’d’ing, luv.”She can’t help but laugh. She was the reason why they used cloth over disposable. While he goes to put it in the special and thankfully smell-proof container, Beth blows raspberries on Hawika’s belly. She wonders if he grumbles when she’s not here, or if its just a show because she is.

Who makes the bottles:She’s completely unaware that he’s standing in the doorway. Her back is almost to him but at this angle he can just barely make out Hawika’s auburn curls glistening in the dim nightlight. Beth insists on breast-feeding, pumps when she has to work, because she hates the idea of not bonding enough with the baby. He’s tried to tell her that it doesn’t matter if she was created outside of the usual way, but Beth won’t hear him. He can’t know that she worries the little girl will somehow think less of her because technically she isn’t Hawika’s real mother. Andy had always disliked Iwalani for the same reasons and she...she can’t bear the idea.

Who stays up late at night to rock the kid(s) to sleep and sings them lullabies:Éiredozes in his arms as he rocks gingerly in a chair not designed for someone of his height. One blunt-tipped finger traces each of her tiny ones, then each of her ears. She stretches and grasps at his hand with her own and latches on, curling her tongue against the roof of her mouth in a suckling gesture that has him reaching for the bottle tucked at his side. The nights that Beth works, an arrangement worked out so that at least one of them would be home any given time, are the ones he likes best. It’s quiet and the fragrant breeze drifts in through the nursery window, carrying the scent of the sea and the greenery surrounding the house. He couldn’t have imagined that a few short years ago when all he had to look forward to coming home to was an empty apartment and the next ship’s call, that a new life was waiting. And now that new life was small and warm, and settled into his arms more perfectly than her mother does.

Who is guilty of spoiling the kid(s):

“Oh my gawd, Cerise. Look at him!”“Definitely not local.”“Definitely.”“Y’all are some thirsty bitches.”“Well, he can ride me any time he wants.”“Shhhh. He’ll hear you.”It happens twice a week. The lot of them, some married and some not. Cerise is new to the group and doesn’t know what a joy it is to see Lieutenant O’Rian out on the ranch with his little girl. They know he’s married, that he bought the horse that his daughter rides and is only JUST taller than her father when she stands in the saddle. That he’s Irish. The rest is rumour. That he comes from money. That he’d been in some kind of accident in the field. A few years ago Karen had managed to get him to buy her a few drinks, almost got him to go home with her.“Da! Go! Go!Luka couldn’t care less about the rumours. The stares and awkward attempts at flirting while he walks the horse across the field. Though if he were to tell the truth...after this he does have a date. He’s taking Éire to breakfast, then the beach. Then back home for a bath before they go shopping for new clothes. Tomorrow the biggest gift is coming into the airport, and she wants to look her best for Grandma.

Who would give the kid(s) cookies in the middle of the night:

When she noticed that there was no sound coming from Hawika’s room, Beth crawled out of bed, wrapping her robe around her. Not because she was cold but...it had been a while since she’d lived in New York. A quick check showed the little girl’s bed was unmade, the covers thrown back, and her stuffed seal pup conspicuously absent. She pads down the hall, passing the guest room, passing the living room where she’s a hundred percent sure Andy is oblivious to anything but his head phones and his whiskey {and for once, taking the ban on smoking seriously}.

The kitchen is illuminated by the bulb above the sink. At the island in the middle of it are two backs. One tall and broad like miles of empty country, boots hooked on the lowest rung of the stool. The other is tiny, covered in pinks and purples, with two pigtails hanging down her back. The memory it brings up takes her back a little. Both of them have glasses of milk in sight and both of them turn in eerie unison. Hawika’s little face is covered with cookie crumbs and toffee chips and a gap-toothed grin.“Hey Apps,” Baz greets her, unclear on the concept that it’s after midnight. Beth folds her arms across her chest and fixes him with her new found power: the Mom stare.“What? S’a’cookie. Ain’t gonna kill’er.”Apparently, Wanda Barton she is not.

Who always takes the kid(s) side:

“O’i-”“We.”“We-”“Mahalo.”“Dunna feel ye apriciate d’ situation-”“Keiki, wha’ Uncle Lulu is try f’ say...if ya don’ give her back dat swing… he gonna rip ya arms an’ legs off like one wookie.”“Be’d!”“What? Got da lil hannabaddah off, din’it?”Despite the look Luka gives her, she watches as her daughter climbs up into the now vacated swing.“Da! Push me! Push me fast!”Who would wake up early to make breakfast for the kid(s) before school:Two eggs. Two strips of vegan bacon which...no. No, he doesn’t want to think about it. Then it’s pancakes. Then porridge. Then…“Can ye jus’ pick one, luv?”And she does. Takes one bite of everything before she’s dancing across the kitchen floor, her tiny backpack glittering and casting rainbows from the sequins catching morning light. The fake-on is being used as floppy bunny ears as she sings a song that only bats in Honduras can hear.Beth is running late, normally this is her part of the job.“Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Hurry uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup. I’m gonnna be laaaaaaaate.”

Who gets the kid(s) ready for school in the morning:He’s got half her hair done, her shoes are by the door, her lunch is packed, breakfast eaten, face washed, and they’re practically matching in uniforms. He’s not sure why Beth insisted in an all girl Catholic School, but the resources and academia almost make up for the ridiculous tuition. If he doesn’t leave soon though, he’s going to be late, and Luka...cannot be late. He’ll make it up to her with a Saturday afternoon just the two of them, he promises.Just as he hears her car pull up into the drive way.“M’sorry… go’ah go, luv. Be good.”Éire smiles with angelic sleepiness.

Who takes the kid(s) to school:

Beth has run the Boston Marathon and regularly surfs the pipeline. She’s worked in the Congo. She survived over ten years in New York City, and knows how to navigate the subway. But never has she come face to face with a child who doesn’t want to go to school before. It’s creeping closer to to 7:15 and her shoes are still by the door. Her hair is half in and half out of her braids. Her backpack and all of its contents are strewn all over creation.“Hawika! C’mon. We goddah go.”Silence meets her.“I know ya can hear me. Get ya stuff an’ get ya little bottom in da car. NOW.”“O’i dun wanna!”She intentionally sounds as much as she can like Luka. “Dat’s too bad, we all do da kine we don’ wanna, jus’ da way da world works.”The evil glare she gets is breath-taking, and Beth, at the end of her rope, snatches her cell-phone off the counter. It takes almost another ten minutes on hold to bring Luka in from the field and whatever he’s doing with his new little tadpoles.A few quiet words later, Hawika is picking up her things and pretending that nothing happened. Beth has no idea what he said but they are going to have a chat later.

Who goes to the parent-teacher conferences:They present a unified front, even if they have to have an advance schedule of the conferences. They try to make every performance together, every open house, luau, sporting event. It doesn’t really matter how tired they are. How busy their schedule. The teachers drone on and on and they smile and nod. It’s on the way to the car that they finally break ranks. “We NO are buyin’ her a bike f’ her grades, Lulu.”He grins. He’s got the ten minutes driving home to talk her into it, because he spent all night putting that thing together. Who will be the first to suggest to have the “Talk” with the kid{s}.

“She’s only d’irteen, Be’d. Ta young.”“Yeah, an’ Panda wait til I was sixteen an’ caugh’ him red han...well. Ya know wha’ I mean. An’ she no like me a’ dat age. Wen go pick her up t’day from class, an’ she was sittin’ on da hood of her friend Janette’s braddah car. One of da younger boys from Kamehameha had his arm ‘round her, an’ he wearin’ her lip gloss when I pull up. So I t’ink it’s time.”“Oh. No. No’ it. Oi’ be an oak an oi’ canna be moved. But aye...go for’d an’ conquer.” 

Who would choose their child(s) prom outfit:

“Mom! Lindsay Stewart is such a bi-”Beth looks up from her laptop, and the article she was writing for Nursing Quarterly. Brow rising above the upper rim of her glasses at the chosen word.“I mean...well, no. You know what I mean! She stole my dress!”“Stole?”“Well, bought it before I could! And I’ve been saving for months.”Beth smiles softly. She remembers this age, and all the ones that come after it, and this isn’t the worst lesson life could teach her daughter. But she also needs to know that they’ve always got her six. “K, den. So wha’ we do is...you an’ me ...we go shoppin’. Calista’s firs’ den Bijou’s if no like. Shoes, dress, every kine, an’ we put it on my black card. Mebbe after we get some shave ice or some kine a’ Leonard’s, yeah?”

Who would cry when the kid(s) go off to college:

She’s always been a Daddy's girl, and even now, about to start her freshman year, none of that’s changed.Her brother and Baz make comments that are both sweet and snarky, toasting Hawika with Fireball boiler makers which she doesn’t even want to think about. Because it won’t be long before her daughter is going to start experimenting on her own, far beyond the reach of her parents and Beth still remembers what college was like. Notre Dame is far away from Hawai’i and far away from New York and everything is changing. The house is going to be quiet. There won’t be a constant state of everything. It isn’t going to be the three of them any more.“That’s why they call it growing up, babe.” Of course Andy’s right. He almost always is.She catches Luka in her own reflection and sees wet on his face, from both eyes, which surprises her. “So. Hey. Goddah go, wan get my alohas in too. We’ll see you in a couple of days.”She hangs up the call and slips her phone into her pocket, turning to face the other two. She blinks back the moisture in her own eyes and fixes a bright smile. The air isn’t quite chilly yet and the sky is blue, clear, crisp. There’s trees everywhere and dozens of other kids milling around with their parents or gathered in groups scattered over the quad.Maybe twenty more minutes is all she has to give them before Éire’s pulled away by the call of student life. Luka’s arm wraps around Beth’s waist, hers woven behind his back the same way and they walk back to the rental car slowly.“Were o'fair play, luv. Ye want ta troi'y again?”Beth tilts her head up at him, nostrils flaring, the corners of her eyes crinkling, and her lips tremble at the corner. Another entire life flashes in her green gaze as she seriously considers it. Then comes a deep hug, her hand coming to rest against his abs. A little laugh that’s sweet and soft.“I...I think I’m good, Admiral O’Rian.”He grins back, presses a kiss to her brow, and sweeps her off her feet.
